Titre :
The Quebec chronicle
La ligne éditoriale du journal est définie comme suit : « [.] in the management of The Morning Chronicle we shall, therefore, begin by simply declaring, that, as we glory in our connexion with the British Empire, it will be our undeviating aim and unremitting endeavour, to create and foster a cordial attachment to those time-honoured institutions which have made her so illustrious in the annals of the world ». (May 18, 1847, p. 2)

[Traduction]
Voici les différents titres que le Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph a connus depuis ses débuts : Disponibles en ligne : The Morning Chronicle (Jan. 1847 - Nov. 1850) The Morning Chronicle and Commercial and Shipping, 1850-1888 The Morning Chronicle (Feb. 1888 - May 1888) The Quebec Morning Chronicle, 1888-1898 The Quebec Chronicle, 1898-1924 Non disponible en ligne : The Chronicle Telegraph (1925-1934) The Québec Chronicle-Telegraph (1934 à ce jour)

Wyoming.Ont, has been waging in the Canadian courts.to be restored to what he regards as his ecclesiastical rights and which received another setback at Toronto on Thursday, when an appeal from the decision of Justice Britton was dismissed, is to give way now, it is understood.to a revival of his snit for $50,000 for alleged slandar against Bishop Fallon. The suit was commenced over a year ago as the result of an order from Bishop Fallon, deposing Father Gnam but was dropped.according to the latter's testimony.under an agreement by which Archbishop MeNeill, of Toronto, proniised to restore him and provide him with maintenance until this should have been done.Father Gnam later brought action Against the Archbishop alleging breach of this agreement and it is be- , cause this sut has beey SCOTCH WHISKY Fhases Washington, May 11—While peace negotiations marked time pending formal sittings of the South American mediators to begin Monday on Cunadian soil, the mediators and officials of the State Department here today were occupied with several serious phases of the Mexican situation demanding immediate attention.Secreary Bryan called at the Argentine Legation late in the afternoon, and spent two hours in conference with the South American envoys, discussing the continued detention of John R.Siltiman, American vice-consul, at Saltillo, by the Mexican Federals, the reported seizure of Lobo Island with its lighthouse by American torpedo boats and the case of the five South Americans under arrest at Vera Cruz for firing upon United States sailors and marines.Mr.Bryan insisted that the release of Silliman must be brought about at once. When asked about the matter later, he would not say what would happen if the vice-consul were kept in prison, but he was gravely emphatic in announcing the governments's determination to have him freed.Lobo Island Seizure. As to the Lobo Island incident, the Secretary informed the mediators that so far the United States government had received no official confirmation of the takiag of the island and that in the absence of confirmation he could offer no formal explanation of the reported action of the navy.T@ aministration circles it is contended that if the seizure has been made, it was not an act of aggression against Huerta, but merely a necessary step to protect oil shipping against possible d'saste: as a result of the closing of the lighthouse by the Federals. While the representatives appointed by General Huerta to confer with the mediators were preparing to leave Vera Cruz.the United States government officially announced its representatives in mediation negotiations ‘hefore the South American triumvirate at Niagara Falls, Ont.next Monday.Justice Tamar.of the United States Supreme Court, and Frederick W.Lehman, former Solicitar-General were chosen by President Wilson as the American representatives. From Huerta are hastening farward Augustine Rodriguez.Emilio Rahasa.and [Luis Elguero.Ambassador Da Gama of Brazil; Minister Naon, of Argentine, and Minister Suarez, of Chile, the mediators, tonight expressed satisfaction in the selection of the advisers for hoth governments, and little further is expected in the preliminary peace negotiations until all have met in Canada.Carranza Not Represented.General Carranza and the Mexican rebels who seek Huerta's overthrow, will not be represented in the conference.according to latest advices. From Tampico, where Mexican Federals and Constitutionalists have heen preparing for a sanguinary struggle, came rumblings of battle, while reports that Huerta’s strength was waining in Mexico City.and that the bandit leader Zapata was about to attack the capital from the south served to arouse diplomatic agents of foreign nations lest their people in Mexico City might be in imminent danger of persecution nr death.State Department officials were indignant when it became known that Vice-Consul Silliman and his clerk, Joseph A.Marchani, as well as several other Americans, had been pri- eoners of the Federal commander at Saltillo, and that the consul still is held despite urgent representations for his release made by the Brazilian Minister in Mexico City.Consular Clerk's Experience.Late in the day Consul Canada re- orted the arrival of Consular Clerk farchandi in Vera Cruz. The clerk informed Mr.Canada that before he was releas:d from = custody of the Mexicans, he was marched under guard from the jail to the consulate and compelled at the point of a revolver to open the safe and surrender to the Federal commander all the consular records and all valuables, including money and a quantity of jew.elary left there for safe-keeping.Mediators Go Ahead.Despite such disquieting elements always attendant upon revolution and threatened international eorflict, the Latin-American mediators proceeded energetically with their plans for the conference at Niagara Palis. The only sign of military activity in connection with the Mexican shtus- tion was the gathering of « dosen ot the ranking officers of the army now in Washington in the office of Sec.retary Garrison for as hours confer ‘ ZAPATA IS —— (Special to The Chronicle) Ottawa, May 11—A report tabled by Postmaster-General Pelletier today completely disposes of an alleged scandal brought out by the Opposition during the course of last session. At that time Honorable Rodolphe Lemieux asserted that the Post-office Department had purchased an un- tsualiy and unnecessarily large number of locks for mail bags. The member for Rouville based his story on an answer given by the assistant Deouty Postmaster-General which, how- ever, was crconeous and which he correctec suon afterwards. However the correction was deliberately ignored and the Opposition kept discussing the $350,000 padiock deal, Hon.Mr.Lemieux afterwards shifted his ground and tried to manufacture another scandal by saying that the people from whom these locks were being purchased were persona! friends of the Portmaster-General, that the price of the padiocks was too high, although it was the same as Mr.Lemieux himself had been paying all along.Mr.Lemieux got very indignant asserting there was boodle in all this. The report brought down today shows that the 10,000 locks which had been ordered, not having been properly manufactured by the company were refused by the department, that the manufacturers have had to take them back and that the Post-office Department ordered others which they succeeded in getting at a reduced is the C.N.R.and on this it is not believed that the Liberals will put up more than a perfunctory fight. The second is redistribution. The committee is working hard to bring down ® unanimous report, but at present there is more or less of a deadlnzk, the main difficulty being in Ontario.New schemes of settlement are suggested every hour. But every new scheme naturally involves the sderi- fice of some The coroner's inquest on the remains of Miss Marie Blanche Dubois, who was foully murdered on Sunday morning in the rear of the shoe store conducted by herself and her brother at the corner of St.Valier.Sauvageau | and Massue streets, will be held 9:30 o'clock this morning at the residence of the victim's mother, No.| Sauvageau street. Some startling disclosures are expected at the inquest, which will be conducted by Coroner Jolicoeur, who has been making a deep research into all the circumstances of the case, which is one of the most revolting in the criminal records of the City of Quebec. The inquest this morning will probably be only partial, as the Coroner will show the murdered remans of the young girl to the jury and then the testimony of the girl's mother and her aunt will be adduced, after which the inquest may be adjourned to permit further inquiries being made into all the circumstances attending the crime.Coroner Jolicoeur was very busy all day yesterday, as were Chief Mc- Carthy and Provincial Police Cardinal and Verret, searching for more evidence which would throw light on the case, The police visited the home of prisoner Joe Dion, who was arrested on suspicion Sunday night, and there took possession of some of the man's clothing, whicl: is pow in the hands of Coroner Jolicoeur.Rumor has it that the clothes in question are stained with blood, but Dr.Jolicoeur refused to confirm or deny this point. It is also rumored that the prisoner, who some years ago was employed in the Dubofs «hoc siore, was cross-questioned yesterday and at first denied that he had been in the Dubois store for some months past, bu’ later admitted that he had been there last “Tuesday and Thursday.Tt is also common talk that he was en: moured of the victim of the crime, but that she scorned his affections and gave him no encouragement. When Dion was arested on Sunday night he was on his way home from Montmorency Falls.where he is said to be -ourting inother young woman whom he had gone dovn to see early on Sunday afternoon. No formal accusaiion has yet heen made against Dion and while he may be presumed to be innocent until he is p-oved guilty.the police seem to think that they have the right man. They say that he answers the description gives by Mr.Louis Savard, N.I’.of the individual in a grey suit whom he saw leave the Dubois house on Sunday morning about cleven o'clock and burry awéy.After the arrest on Sunday night Mr, Savard was called upon to identify the prisoner.and although he had not seen the face of the man who left the Dubois house in the morning.he suid that Dion's general outlines as well as his clothes corresponded cx- actly with those he had seen on the man in the morning.Dion denies having had any connection whatever with the killing of ithe girl and maintains that at the time the crime was committed he was elsewhere with some friends. He persists that he can prove an alibi.Coroner Jolicoeur has already lected five of the jurymen for the inquest and will name three others this morning. The men chosen are ail in business in the vicinity of the Dubois store. They are ts follows: Messrs.L, T.Armand, Je veller: Arthur five to ten per cent of the oat crop acreages have ben seeded. The percentage seeded to these graing in the southwest and northeast of the province is not so high owing to intermittent snow and rain falls since the first of the month.causing cessation of work of from a week to ten days.West of Moose Jaw the rainfall has done very much good, but on the lighter land more rain would be beneficial.Although the weather generally over the province has been cold, the crop has made good progress in the west and north.as much as M) per cent of the early :own fields showing green.Tu many districts the cold wet weather of the month of May to date will result in less acreage being devoted tn wheat and more to coarse grains than had heen planned by the farmers. While the cold weather has
