acre cause injury?Does* salt cause more moisture to be available to the growing crop?” —R.P.Huron County.Answer: The use of salt with sugar beets was common practice in England some yearn ago.Salt does not add any plantfood, but the sodium of the salt lets loose the potash out of the soil.Sugar beets are particularly potash-loving crops on account of the starch and other carbor.hydrates that they contain, hence the liberation of potash helps in their growth.I find records where English farmers used salt on soils growing barley. The same reaction results there namely that the barley crop benefit-led from the potash which the salt let loose.Malstcrs, however, found that the addition of salt lowered the quality of the barley for malting purposes. The sowing of salt at 250 lbs.per acre would not be injurious to crops. In a short time, however, it would be injurious to the soil, in that it leads to the depletion of the potash of the soil, beets or mangels, it may be that the help which these crops receive from It is to some extent due to the fact that fhe beet plant is thought to have originated near the sea.Salt has no plantfood value whatever. As far as we know, it acts only as a stimulant. When it is applied in quantity, it does draw moisture from the air, but at the small rate of application which would be possible to put on the soil, I cannot conceive any beneficial effect resulting from the application of salt due to the moisture it gathers.I never advise the use of salt because as I have already said, it is nothing but a whip or stimulant to the soil.Question: “Would it be possible to sow fertilizer after the grain has been sown?I am not going to be able to procure a fertilizer drill at time of sowing, but could get one shortly afterwards.Would it be pos-z sible to sow the grain with an ordinary drill and follow later with fertilizer? If this is possible, how much later could this be done to get the best results?”—C.B., Perth County.Answer: I would not advise trying to add fertilizer to the field after the grain has been sown.I am afraid the discs and shoes would tear out the young sprouting seeds to such an extent that it would do more injury than good. The one exception to this is a top dressing of nitrate of soda, , sulphate of ammonia or cyanamid. This can be made by broadcasting i the nitrogen carrying material on I top of the wheat. This is common I practice in England in the Spring, I especially on wheat and barley.Un- I derstand, broadcasting does not work | the fertilizer into the soil, simply scatters the material on top.The moisture of the soil and any rain that falls dissolves this material and about five bushels per acre improvement usually results.Man Made Grandeur Britannica records the earliest proposal to utilize explosions (of gunpowder) to obtain continuous motive power as having probably been made by Christian Huygens in 1630 and by Papin and the Abbe Hautefeuille later Street in 1794 proposed an engine driven by a flame-ignited explosive mixture of vaporized spirits of turpentine and air, this being regarded by Sir Dugald Clerk as the first real gas engine described in Britain. In 1820 W.Cecil described his actually working hydrogen-air gas engine.Other early inventors of similar engines, states a writer in the Detroit News, were Samuel Brown, William Barnett, Lebon, Barsanti and Matteuci.Barnett suggested the principle of compression; Lebon in 1799 had used an electric spark to ignite the gas and had also referred to the principle of compression.Etienne Lenoir in 18GU patented a gas engine and two years later built and drove the first gasoline-driven vehicle.Dr.N.A.Otto of Cologne, Germany, in 1878 invented an engine in which the gas was compressed before being exploded; this improvement so increased the efficiency of the internal combustion engine that it began to be considered as a competitor of the steam engine. His fourcycle engine was further improved and adapted to motor cars by Gottlieb Daimler of Wurttemburg and Carl Benz of Mannheim in 1885 and 1886.Two Factions Unite Quebec, April 22—Tiie Liberal paratious for spring seeding.Good crops and heavy yields are directly associated with the use of clean healthy seed of the best quality. The annual losses due to the ravages of seed-borne bacterial and fungous parasites, are much greater than the average farmer realizes. For this reason, all seed should be treated before it is sown, regardless of its quality.Seed treatment of wheat, oats and barley has been greatly simplified m recent years with the appearance on the market of organic mercury dusts. These dusts, when properly applied, effectively control the smuts of oats, covered smut of barley, bunt or stinking smut of wheat and other seed borne fungi and bacteria that are responsible for the blights and rots commonly found in our cereal crops.Due to their easy application, effectiveness and stimulation to genual ion, they are rapidly replacing formalin and copper carbonate. They are not, however, recommended as a control for the loose smuts of wheat and barley. These sumts are not affected by the use of the ordinary seed treatments, but can be controlled by the hot water treatment. In applying organic mercury dusts to the seed, care should be exercised to follow instructions as outlined in courts of the middle ages and later. The dress of the jester was usually showy, or even gaudy, and toward the end of the time when jesters were employed it was always typically many-colored or motley; but as jesters in some early courts were men of considerable intellectual ability, and in some cases of good family, their dress was not always conspicuously distinguished from that of those with whom they mingled. The bauble, sometimes very small and of rich materials, was the only certain badge of the jester’s employment.• The fools of Shakespeare’s plays indicate a
