home, an artist from Ottawa asked me ; what impressed me most of the whole trip.Wi^th a brush and a few colors I could have told him. With a clear trumpet sound right out of a Haydn concerto I could I have told him.But words were at a loss.It was something about the clean shininess of the trout as they came out of the water into the sunshine about the tremendous amount of vigorously fresh air which forced itself into our lungs—you see words can't cope with the situation. In words I can say that the Indian guides were wonder- j ful—sure among the reefs and l- y / railway is the us.Pushing the boats along the rails was a big enough job as it was.Carrying them over the rough ground would probably have ruined some of us for the rest of the day.FOUNDED IN 1883 Publisher: David R.Dickson Editor: Ro&aleen Dickson Printed and published weekly at Shawviile, Quebec Member of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association Authorised as second class mail.Post Office Department, Ottawa * ALL ARE WELCOME SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 In the west they are called “sitters” and there is no stigma attached to the term. That is just what they are. They are not trained teachers but just good natured people who have been coaxed into the position of taking a classroom where no regular teacher is available.Depending entirely upon the intelligence and endurance of these sitters, the class either progresses or not.It is quite possible that an untrained woman might do a much better job of teaching a roomful of children than a woman who has had all the training in the world. So much depends upon the personality of the person.Children learn more by example than is generally realized and will take the same attitude toward their work as their teacher takes toward her work. They will adopt the mannerisms and prejudices of the teacher and these are not things that are taught at any teacher’s college. The speech of the teacher will be mimicked and her facial expression will be mirrored by the children who watch her for so many hours each day.The state of her nerves will have a direct effect on the degree of tension in the classroom.A “sitter" who is calm and pleasant, speaks correctly and loves her work will be an asset in any classroom and no parent needs to worry too much if his child has such a substitute for a teacher.Of course the ideal to attain is for each classroom to have such a person in charge who also has had the proper training in subject matter and teaching techniques.Eventually this will come, but not until those teachers we now have can put over the idea to high school students that the profession of teaching is not only the most important profession in the world but can be just as exciting as you want it to be.Meanwhile, we have “sitters”, who we salute for their pluck.UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA SHAWVILLE Rev.H O.Lester, B.A., B D.Minister PRESBYTERIAN Bristol Memorial Presbyterian Church Bristol, Quebec Rally Day
