[" ft .I » 99 46 Voice Of The Pontiac No.40.72nd Year.Shawville, Quebec, Thursday, March 31, 1955 By Subscription NATIONAL FARM FORUM MEETS HERE IN JUNE -O Jimmy Gardiner Speaks In Shawville Farm Forum To Meet At Pine Lodge U.S.Atomic Policy mm t i X The shifting sand of American foreign poicy have recently sufficiently resisted the inroads of international currents to take on some definition and characteristics which are of importance to the rest of the world. The clearest statement relates to the use of atomic weapons. These mpy be dividd into two categories ~the hydrogen bomb for use in the large scale attacks against cities; all other atomic weapons', or battlefield A-weapons.It has now been made clear that the US A.intends to use this latter category of weapons against military targets ip the event of Communist aggression anywhere in the world. This policy has been called the “limited atomic strategy".It is called "limited" because it stops short of the all out use of the it appears that the only clear died of carbon monoxide poisoning hydrogen bomb against cities; The fact about the newly defined US.in his car on Sunday, March 27.emphasis has been shifted from the use of atomic bombs against civilian populations to the use of atomic weapons against military targets. The variety of atomic weapons now available to the American forces, or in process of development.is wide. They include atomic depth charges; atomic shells to be fired from large calibre cannon; atomic warheads for artillery rockets, for guided missiles for anti-airciVft and air-to-air missiles, for* pilotless bombers and for bombs to be dropped from planes. In Europe.America*1 "round 1 fense forces have been backed up with atomic weapons. The U.S Air Force, based in Engand.has been equipped with tactical atomic weapons, as have units of the US.Navy based in the Mediterranean. In Asia, the policy of limited mobile sea and air power based on a chain of islands running from the Aleutian Islands through Formosa to the Phillipines. The firm declaration, by the U.S.A., of this policy seems to have been made with the intention of scaring the Communists away from aggression—primarily in the East. There is evidence that the Americans plan to use the "limited Atomic strategy" in the event of an attack by China on the islands of Quemoy and Matsu; an attack which is forecast by some for the middle of April, and by others "not for many months*".The latter alternative appears more probable. The new policy of emphasizing the use of atomic weapons against purely military targets appears to be of a somewhat dubious nature. It must be realized that these weapons release atomic explosions which cause much greater damage over a much greater area than traditional weapons. How then are they to be used against purely military targets, and when does a target cease to be military and become non-military or civilian? The answer to the question probably is simply that all attacks are against purely military targets which are made with the tactical weapons listed in some detail above. If the use of the strategic H bomb carrier—the giant B52 aircraft were invoked, then, and only then, would the "limited" part of the policy likely be considered to be violated. In other words it would presumably be in keeping with the present policy to drop an H bomb from a fighter- Ctfirifl VlPfivTI bomber on say, Foochow, situated UlVI 111 VIVUI11 within easy range of Formosa. Thus 1 The National Farm Radio Forum m - I will hold their annual meeting at she turned to the Commonwealth j Pine Lodge, Bristol, early in June.Countries for assistance.By 1943 This decision was made at the Canada was shipping huge quan- two day meeting of the Quebec •titles of milk, cheese, butter, eggs Farm Forum Association held last X Speaking to a large audience last Friday night in Shawville.Hon.Jimmy Gardiner gave his listeners a look at the farm products price support program.Showing the importance of agriculture in the Canadian economy.Mr.Gardiner stated that over 25% of Canadian exports are ag-r.cul'Ursi products.Oui exports to dollar difficulties and high .u Great Britain run to about 350 prices.and bacon to the United Kingrom.week at Macdonald College.Plans With the end of the war the pic- p-e now underway to entertain ture changed sharply and sud- j the many delegates and visitors denly.Britain no linger could I who will be in this district at the purchase our dairy products due | time of the National meeting.Another important decision from last week's meeting was* to hold Canadian farmers were forced to I a special meeting April 22 to es-cut production drastically. With no tablish an organization of all foreign market, the remainder of English speaking farmers of Que- million dollars in value, the greater part of which is wheat. We also export farm producer to the United States to a value of about 300 million dollars. From the latter Country we import farm products valued at over 200 million dollars. It may be said, with some reason, that there is reciprocal trade in farm products between Canada and the USA.j During the war.when Britain’s I traditional sources of supply of dairy products were lost to her, the dairy products had to be ab- bee. This meeting will take place sorbed at home. With an expanding economy and increased population, this market has proved reasonably buoyant. Most dairy farmers concentrated their efforts, after the loss of the British Market, on butter and eggs.A committee of the House of Commons* William fDuffi Laviolette who at the Assembly Hall of Macdonald College and be attended by Dr.H.H.Hannam.president of CFA, Floyd Griesbach.Sec.of National Farm Radio Forum, Jean Lemoine, President o f Union Catholique de Cultivateurs and other men and women competent to discuss the new organization.tended tol eadersi in agricultural A special invitation will be exsocieties, Farm Forums', farmers Clubs, co-operatives.Agronomists and other people in each County of Quebec.Findings from the local forums indicate that the majority of the groups find the need for farmers to become organized.policy is* that the intention is to Burial will take place Friday Ap-use atomic weapons in the ex : ril 1 at 10.00 o'clock in the Portage of Communist aggression.I du Fort Cemetery.Milk Delivered Monday___________________ In Year's Worst Blizzard Team stm work At 38 & 39 Yrs.was set up in 1948 to enquire into 'the marketing of butter in Canada.Following the findings of this committee the government entered the butter marketing field and set its purchase price at 58 cents, and its selling price to wholesalers at 61 cents. This price has been used every year except one, when the purchase price was set at 53 cents.March 28 was the date of this winter's worst storm and not 'the least of the problems it presented was that of delivering the milk Getting .he da.ly quota out to a ’ounty ; Editors: One thing becomes increasingly evident to me the longer I stay in England. That is the need of restating the truths of the Christian faith in a language and idiom that people of today can understand.Such words as salvation, atonement, even the three letter word sin, conveys very little to the ordinary citizen in this year of grace 1955.For a good many years this has boen obvious to many people. We have had a forty year period since the outbreak of World War I in which period the majority of the English-speaking people of the world have become less and less attached to the church.Only a few still seek direction for their lives from her and acknowledge her authority. The religious concepts of two generations Back mean nothing to most of the people today. If they cannot understand the language, how can they understand the ideas it is sup-poted to express? What we need are theologians in overalls, men and women capable of separating the wheat from the chaff, that is extracting Christian truth from Christian dogma and then re-stating it for men and women who are living in this highly complex industrial civilization.HOW TO MAKE THEM HATE IT The modern school and all it contains is one of the wonders of our age.The privilege of attending school is appreciated by a large percent of school children in spite of the fact that most of the teachers consider school attendance a punishment and use it as such. When a child is so disinterested in his work that he makes a nuisance of himself in the classroom, he is detained in school after the regular school hours. If a child finds it hard to contain his naturally active body in a school seat during regular school hours, he is punished by being kept in that seat overtime.School work, the joy of discovering new facts, the satisfaction of putting ideas down on paper, is also used as a punishment. If you are bad enough you are not only detained in school but you are made to do school work and thus made to hate it.You cannot save a few precious minutes but doing your homework or getting ahead in your classes with individual study but you must do prescribed “busy work” definitely not designed to enhance your enjoyment of the learning process. What then, one might ask, can the teacher do to punish children who lose interest in the subjects he is teaching? The correction of this situation is simple problem and the only solution which is available to all teachers in the immediate vicinity of Shawville, without needing to go to the trouble of reading up on educational psychology, is to observe certain teachers right here who do not need to recourse to detentions to get the best from their classes. There is one who has taught generations of Shawville children, is genuinely loved by all those who have sat in her classes, who in turn loves every child she teaches. There are probably more than one such teacher at Shawville. Some of the affection instilled by them cannot help but become associated with the school so children coming out of their classes can and do love school. But the effects of one vear under the influence of such a teacher can be wiped away very quickly by another teacher who resorts to using the school as a prison wherein to incarcerate her “bad” pupils in the sunshine hours of a Spring afternoon., i :ig examples. He astablishcd that which
