ever since back roads have not yet been opened following recent heavy falls of snow, and the By Angus Homer Sunday visitors with Mr.and Mrs.Gilbert Telford were Mr.PONTIAC PRINTSHOP our more plowmen, quite reasonably, are bending all their efforts, in a quite gallant way, to opening these roads. The community of Murrells The present road conditions mean that the principle of winter road maintenance as adopted by the Province of Quebec simply doesn’t work.It is an ill-founded principle, whereby the province maintains the roads so long as no snow falls on them.As soon as snow falls, the roads are taken over by the municipalities who let contracts for their maintenance to plowmen of the area.Grants are then made by the province to the municipalities to cover the costs of plowmen’s contracts. This in theory seems to be quite sound. But it happens that plowmen’s contracts are paid on the basis of a price per mile of road to be maintained. If the winter is an easy one, the plowmen make money. If it is a severe one, they can and do lose a great deal of money, especially if they do the job they contract to perform. Thus the plowmen are gambling on the kind of winter we are going to get.Since most of the plowmen have no backing beyond their own slender resources, it is quite easy for them to lose their shirts. It ill behooves the provincial government to be party to deals of this kind.On the other hand there is the problem of Highway No.8.The entire County depends on this highway for its contact with the rest of the country.Large quantities of pulp are hauled down Highway 8 in all weather.Supplies and salesmen move up Highway 8.It is one of the economic arteries of this area, and should at all times be kept in first class condition.Because of its prime importance, it is our firm belief that Highway No.8 should be removed from the jurisdiction of the municipalities, and maintained all the year round by the province through the Department of Roads in Aylmer Its maintenance in first class condition is too important to leave to the chances inherent in the present system. There is a move underway elsewhere in the province, notably in Gatineau County, to have the highway taken over 12 months a year by the province.Gatineau County Council has submitted a petition to the province to have this done.Other petitions are in the course of preparation by many other organizations in that county. Our hope is that our own County Council will recognize the importance of taking action on this matter, and will submit a resolution along these hnes to the province. All other organizations which believe it is important to have a good winter highway in Pontiac should likewise adopt a resolution urging the province to take the SHAWVILLE sympathy in the bereavement of Mrs.Argue.AAA The C P R freight train hit and killed a horao belonging to James Telford, cf McKee, on Tuesday evening about 5:00 p.m.The passenger tra n was delayed for nearly two hours, waiting for the track to be cleared.a AAA Keith Hodgins spent five weeks conv nclng Ken Smith and Lloyd Stevens to run for council in the current elections in Shawville and then, thinking nominations were open till 5 p.m., turned up after nominations closed to nom nate them! 3-billion mark, for although from the short term point of view I myself am not yet in a position to make large deposits, it may well be from the long term point of view, that my son, as a representative of the coming generation, may be in a position to do as other sons of Canada are now doing.” m '-h » :xS>Xvv V» The B of M is, of course, proud to have played its part in Julian Janvrin’s success story, and is grateful to him for allowing us to publish it to indicate some of the many ways in which "Gff to know your bankersays Mr.Janvrin.“Your best iollateral is hh confidence.” A spare-time free-lance writer, he spends many evenings at his typewriter while the children study.too, I am in large measure indebted to the Bank of Montreal, for in June my financial Canada’s first bank works with Canadians—new and old alike —in every walk of life from coast to coast.circumstances were such that had I not been confident of my banker’s support, I might not have ever considered sending him to this school.“We have now again moved into Toronto to be nearer the school, but our circumstances have improved, inasmuch as our teenage daughter has now left high school of her own wish and is now working; and as the two younger children are now at school, my wife in the New Year will be in a position to take an office job.“This is not a success story, for the struggle, believe me, is still on.But our bank account is now in better sh?pe than it has been for the past five years and will now perhaps bear scrutiny.“I am now, therefore, at last in a position to write to thank My Bank and in particular Mr.Janvrin’s story pro- vides a sincere and unsolicited testimonial to the fact that "When you ask for a loan at the Bank of Montreal, you do not ask a favour".When money is a problem with you, w hy not see your B of M manager? If your prop-osition is sound and reasonable there's money for you at ai the lowest ' Mi mm the B of M rates and on the fairest terms. An average Canadian family, Mr.A Mrs.Janvrin and the two younger children relu* at TV in their comfortable Toronto apartment.Nine-year-old Robert Janvrin.seen w ith his vounger sister, Patricia, is a student ut one of Canasta's top preparatory schools, thanks to a timely B of M Persona!
