Central School | has stated that he would Board acted as chairnfan LITCHFIELD RATE PAYERS A courageous move by members of the Lower Litchfield School Board to join the Central School Board the County has developed during the organization in past week. The move has been prompted by the fact that the Litchfield Board now finds it virtually impossible to secure a competent teacher for the school; and that as things now stand, the Litchfield children cannot get an education beyond grade 7.SENIOR HOCKEY Here's why.The Litchfield School goes only to the end of grade 7.A pupil who wishes to go beyond that grade would ordinarily go in to Shawville. For providing an education for such a child, the Clarendon Board charges a tuition fee. This fee is based on the cost experience of Clarendon School Board in the previous school year.Last year it worked out to $230 per pupil for the school year, or $23 per month for ten months. If a Litchfield child had gone to ShawviHe in the 1958-59 school year his parents would have been charged $230, and the parents would have been responsible for getting him to and from school. If Litchfield had been under the Central School Board, the charge would have been $115, and it would have been made against the School Board and not against the parents and transportation would become the responsibility of the Board.Clarendon has been used here only as ample of how the system works. It is probable that if a change is made this year at Litchfield, the school involved will be Campbell's Bay.A case was cited to us on this subject, where a family with six closely spaced children was forced to move out of the township a couple of years ago because the cost of a high school education for several children from family all at the same time was prohibitive. The family moved to Montreal, and was thus lost to the County. There are some 26 ratepayers in Litchfield of whom 51% must vote in favour of coming under the Central Board system before such a step can be taken. It is thought that all the parents of school children would vote for this step but ratepayers who are parents of school children number only 7.For the vote to pass, a total of 14 ratepayers would have to agree to it.Since there is bound to be a significant rise in the mil for school purposes if there is a move to the Central who do not have children in Mr.Gordon Elliott moved an amendment to the motion, whereby site No.2 be accepted Instead of site No.3.The amendment was seconded by Mr.Clarence Wall.Mr.Billy McTiernan moved that No.5 site be accepted. This was seconded by Mr.Andrew Flood. The original motion, its amendment, and the latter motion were all voted on one after the other. Results of the vote were: For site 2, 16 For late 3, 8.For site 5, 2.Site 2, the Smith Bros, wood yard at the east end of town was thus selected by the ratepayers, subject to the approval of the department of education.By Arnold Garrison The Pontiacs finished the season last Thursday night In Brockvllle losing to Cornwall 5-3.They put up a terrific fight but bad luck seemed to hound them all the way.The bus broke down and the game didn’t get started till afer nine; the Pontiacs didn’t even get time to warm up after a five hour bus rip, and they started with a new goal tender who didn’t get one practice shot.Cornwall were able to capitalize on the situation and at one minute and fifty-five seconds after the game started the score was 3-0.The Pontiacs didn’t get warmed up till the middle of the period but from then on they had the biggest part of the play.Red Young and Royce Richardson scored to bring ShawviHe back in to the picture but as the game went on the terrific pace the Pontiacs were setting began to show and Cornwall go one goal in the second and one In the third to bring the score up to 5-2.In the last five minutes the Pontiacs really put on the pressure O'Donnell scored and the team had enough chances to score to win five hockey games but it just wasn’t In the cards and the game ended 5-3 Shawville didn’t win the shield, but we think that we had a good enough team if Cornwall hadn’t been so fortunate In securing the services of a Senior “A” goal tender and centerman with the help of Mr.Duncan.This is not sour 0f 150’ to 180’ and 210’ respect- grapes but just shows us that- we At PONTIAC PRINTSHOP Shawville, Quebec Rev.Ludger Emard, retired minister of the Otter Lake Baptist Church, will continue residence at Campbell's Bay, where he and Mrs.Emard the former Irene Gamble have lived for the past 11 years- Mr.Emard, a native of Montreal, studied first at Sacre Coeur College, at Mount St.Louis College and then went to the Seminary of St.Theresc, where he fulfilled the requirements to become a Roman Catholic Priest. For the next nine years Mr.Emard worked In the priesthood In Montreal where he was ordained.A change of faith led him In 1911, to study Protestantism at the Moody Bible Institute In Chicago, under Professor W-Grey.Mr.Emard then married and Joined St.Paul Baptist Church In Montreal where he retained membership for 23 years. He entered Into the ministry for the Grande Ligne Mission In 1926.His first field was Lac Long In Temlscouata County. From there his ministry led him to Brownsburg, Argenteull, then to Otter Lake He preached for 13 years at Otter Lake French Baptist, In both French and English before being called to St.Paul’s Montreal. In Montreal, the first Mrs.Emard passed away and Mr.Emard felt a change In surroundings was necessary so he returned to Otter Lake He has held this charge ever since until December 31, 1958.At 68, as a retired minister, Mr Emard Is now turning his attention to photography. This has always been a paying hobby with th s versatile pastor. The members of Pontiac School Board met at The High County Protestant Central school for their regular monthly meeting last Thursday night.a letter was read from Dr Giles of the Department of Education In Quebec advising hat approval had been given for the construction of a three room Separate School and residence at Maryland. It Is planned to have this school ready for use In September. The Department of Education has approved In principal the plans submitted for afi extension to the existing Protestant school at Elmside, providing that the total cost of the addition does not exceed $41,000.It was noted that there has been a protest raised to the acceptance of a tender for the purchase of a school building recently offered for sale by ender by the Bristol School Commissioners. The objection was raised by someone who had endered on the bu ldlng at a price $5.00 higher than the accepted bid.Campbell's Bay School Commissioners have employed an Editor, TRIUMPH Hockey's over for the time being and all Pontiac teams have triumphed. Some didn’t win everything but it can truly be said that a successful season was had by all.Quyon won the Pont-Challenge Trophy; Campbell's Bay took the Farmer’s League Trophy; and the Pontiac s went right into the finals for the Citizen Trophy for all Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, having first won the Pontiac Printshop Trophy for the Upper Ottawa Valley. This Pontiac team, mostly Shawville boys with some strong reinforcements from both up and down the line, demonstrated this year what hard work and concentrated team effort can, accomplish. An unfortunate accident to their goal tender in the face of a very strong team from Cornwall caused their downfall in the finals but they have re-established hockey as the major entertainment here and next season will likely them back full strength with a very large following wherever they play.ACCIDENTS Now is the time when everyone speeds up on the highway. The winter was too long the roads too ridiculous for sensible travel and now we are all released in tuned up cars on bare highways. So here we come Without wanting to seem grim we must admit that exceeding the speed limits, along with other carelessness, will result in highway accidents. Those who have taken St.Johns Ambulance training will never try to lift an accident victim from the road but will instead guard over him, administering the very minimum first aid, until a doctor has been summoned.Although the good Cap and his untiring volunteer helpers have supplied this area with a good crop of St.Johns people, there are still plenty whose first impulse is to drag a wounded peron off the road.In the hopes that even one life may be saved by this plea we would like to urge that all who can read, and have read this, do not try to move an injured person until medical help has arrived. What we realy hope is that the occasion doesn’t arise.I wish to thank the boys who helped me so generously to shovel some of the badly drift-ed-in hills after the last bad snow storms.aW many thanks to friends who gave us a (hot cup of tea) etc.Sometimes at the small hours of OVERPRODUCTION Overproduction of food in some areas of the world, and shortages of food in other parts of the world, all at the same time, is a situation with which we are all familiar.Government in the “have” sections of the world has been greatly preoccupied with this problem, and has done something about it, on a somewhat limited scale.Outright gifts of wheat, etc., have in some instances been made; in others, surplus products Have been “sold" at bargain basement prices, and on terms so generous as to curl the hair of most businessmen. There has been much soulsearching done by the west about this problem, and how it should be solved. The difficulty is that the turning over of our surplus products to “have-not" countries upsets world markets for these products.Canada has felt critical of the U.S.for doing this very thing and has raised its voice in recent trade conferences with the U.S.in an attempt to have the practice stopped, primarily because it has seriously interfered with our own foreign trade. We disagree with our correspondent who says that the situation is an indictment of our financial system. It is not our financial system that is at fault rather the system in use everywhere in the world for making payments between countries. Thus it is that the problem is an international financial problem, not a national one, and is closely associated with the problems surrounding full convertability of national The best economic minds in the western world have been whittling away at this problem for some years now, and we feel confident that time it will be solved.s«22 I I On the subject of teachers .or the 1959-60 school year, Mr.Musgrove stated that in Shawville all vacancies had been Ailed, except In the case of a household
