agree, is not a punishment. Some have even referred to death^ as a reward. If it is punishment, and if you believe in God, why are so many dear children and innocent loved ones taken in death? There is an aspect of punishment there, but it is not of the ones who die. There is also an aspect of guilt in the deliberate taking of life by a political organization, such as a government. The government can now decide that it will forbid the taking of lives and thus absolve themselves and their civil servants and the people of Canada, of the likelihood of guilt in killing a wrongly accused person.* on Truscott) to death for a murder which may have been done by somebody else.It seems that Canada will come out of the business of killing prisoners during the next week or so.It will that prison personnel will require more education, more intelligence and more pay but to lift the guilt from Canadians it will be worth it.As for the corporal punishment, as meted out in schools, this is a matter that comes up from time to time and shouldn’t.There is nothing in the rules that requires a teacher to keep a delinquent in the classroom. All she needs to do is drop him from her roles if he won’t co-operate—there is no need to debase herself to the use of a strap, and that goes for any principal too. There are more valuable uses for time than to stand about striking children on their hands with a hunk of leather, and whoever does this has lost the respect of every child in the school.(There is respect, perhaps, for the strap, but not for the wielder). If parents can’t manage their children, there are courts and reform schools which can.It is not even sensible to expect the school to do it, and they shouldn’t try.Corporal punishment in school won’t ever hit the floor of the House of Commons in Ottawa because it is a Provincial matter. The only way it can be abolished is by an amendment to the Education Act in Quebec. In this day of educational enlightenment it could happen.ST MARY'S C W l The regular monthly meeting of St.Mary’s Council of the CWL was held Tuesday, March 8th in St.Mary’s School auditor -ium, Mrs.Basil Stanton Wrath. It is only right that all be present, for the general judgment is intended to manifest before all intelligent creatures the justice of God, to exhibit Christ in Mis majesty before their eyes, to glorify the just and to put the wicked to shame.St.Paul wrote to the Hebrews: “It is appointed unto all men once to die, and after that the judgment”.In the Acts of the Apostles, the Evangelist Luke describes the Ascension into heaven and predicts Christ's second coming, the purpose of which is to judge us.“Two men stood by them in white garments, who also said: Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven shall so come as you have seen him going into heaven. How exact and complete our judgment will be, Matthew states: “For nothing is covered that shall not be revealed, nor hid that shall not be known.” A striking example, very similar to the consternation that is predicted as to fall upon all sinners on the day of judgment, when hidden crimes and injustices will be revealed openly to all people, was that which penetrated our House of Commons, just a few days ago.It was one of wild panic during which accusations, name-calling, insinuations of horrible crime were thrown against adversaries, across the House. Not only our Canadian Government, but all Canada was struck with awe, at this sudden onslaught of accusation. The visitors’ gallery was jammed to capacity, the Press Gallery too.The Senators came perhaps a!so because they feared that a Daniel had come to sit in judgment over both Houses and that they would be asked under what tree to really stem our evil inclinations and urge us to more Christian li\\ ,ng.A meditation on judgment is so easily made since the Holy Scriptures supply us with such striking texts, that very often the simple reading of them is sufficient to inspire fear and horror, comprehension and admiration, confidence and love, the very forces that our soul needs, when it has wandered from Ciod and from the observance of His commandments. The two Gospels chosen to be read on the last Sunday of the Liturgical Year and on the First Sunday of Advent, which follows immediately give us the striking words of the two Evangelists, Matthew 24 and Luke 21, describing the terrible things that are to happen on the Last Day and of which we will all be witnesses.Dying before this day RED CROSS IS ALWAYS THERE | WITH YOUR HELP comment SUNDAY, MARCH 27 Rev Jos.E.( i ravel le, Otter lake he Lenten season is a time meditating upon the subjects arc
