said that the changes offered by Hilton equal the cost of the Caland Ore Company settlement. The Union official Mr.John Kirkham states that it is not a package equal to Caland which the men want but a rate of $2.32 minimum pay for job class one equal to Caland.Further to the matter of the high cost of this particular settlement as compared to other recent three year settlements in the iron ore industry, Mr.Kirkham has explained that there is a valid reason for this particular settlement being more costly. The contract negotiated between the Union and the Mine in 1963, he says, was considered by the Union to be far behind the times. At that time, with mass unemployment and a long list of applicants for every job at the mine, the Union was forced to settle for an unsatisfactory agreement. At this time the demands seem greater because the union says it is trying to catch Hilton Mine up with the rest of the iron ore industry in Canada.Hilton is listed by the Weis-glass report as shipping X71 long tons of iron oxide pellets in 1964 and 899 in ’64 and their number of employees has been about 350.These figures and probabilities lend support to the argument that Hilton is not maintaining a proportionately larger work force than Marmor and we have been asked to publish these facts to further explain the purpose of the strike now in progress.Another point which has led to misunderstanding between the union and the managemet seems to be the interpretation of the 51 cent package deal. The Union understands this package to be about 41 cents.Three weeks vacation, they say for instance, will not be enjoyed for three years at least by any of the employees, and therefor is not of benefit now. This would seem to these officers to reduce the value of the package. Also termination pay is not of benefit to anyone except those who remain employed at Hilton until this mine closes or they become 65 years old.Information from the union also claims that the company’s comparison with the Caland pack- An officer of the Steel Work- local 5656 has brought more information to light in connection with the demands of his organization which is now striking against The Hilton Mines at Bristol. The Equity last week published the management of the company claim that Hilton must mine from two to three times as much material as other Canadian iron ore operations in order to produce a ton of pellets so a larger work force must be maintained in relation to production. In the same article was published the union’s original request for the top rate of $2.40 as at Marmor, and their subsequent compromise down to a parity rate of $2.20 retroactive to March 1st, 1966.ers union (One of the sensible features piest looking female teamster I ^js particular little
