No.16, 87th Year Hospital in financial trouble O L-r V* keeping it in mind that the Province isn’t very sound financially he couldn’t expect too much.He said the govern- j ment is aware of the need here for an addition to the hospital and that they are looking further into it.He also said that he expected some money from Quebec soon so that their milk bill and their account at the bakery could be paid soon.Mr Main said they arc pressing constantly for a new hospital wing.Mrs Marks reported 2200 admissions, 195 births, deaths 58, electro cardiographs, 792, 362 x-rays, 2816 emergency patients, 569 operations, 1904 patients in physio therapy, 98 fulltime employees, and 32 part time. She proceeded to thank all the groups and organizations which had helped the hospital in many ways during the year. The list was long and varied and concluded with special thanks to Mrs Langford and Mrs McTiernan and their candystripers.Dietician services, Mrs Marks said have been improved and education was being extended to the patients themselves in the case of diabetics and oth- keep trying to get the grants through from Quebec. He thanked the auxiliaries and organizations which help the hospital financially and also introduced the new hospital Administrator, A1 Cunningham.Mr Cunningham explained that a goal towards which the hospital can work is to raise the standards to a point where it can become accredited. He also stated that he hoped for the establishment of a Victorian Order of Nurses services here or a home nursing service of some sort to alleviate overcrowding in the hospital. He said the situation of chronic patients in the hospital is now critical.Mr R E Leduc of Milne, Honeywell and Burpee Chartered Accountants presented the financial statement for the calendar year 1968.The statement showed accounts payable and accrued liabilities of over eighty seven thousand dollars.Cash in the bank—(operating fund)—at Dec 31,1968 was $13,390.and estimated money due from the government was almost $33.000.The payroll for 1968 was $523.813.37 or an average of $43,651 per month.Board member Ray Sheppard reported on a visit which he and Dr Potvin and A1 Cunningham had made to Quebec to ask for funds. He said that Bill Main, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Pontiac Community Hospital, chaired the annual meeting of the Hospital Tuesday evening at the Anglican Hall in Shaw-ville.Seventy three people attended.4 < n ¦"j P sr 1 'V.T?N ( ** V Mrs Betty Turner, secretary of the Board read the minutes of the 1968 annual meeting including the complete report of Mrs Marks at that time.A letter from Raymond Johnston regretting that he couldn’t attend was read as well as a similar letter from Tom Lefebvre.Neither could attend because both Houses of Parliament were in session.i ms 4 r m i tfJ Mr Main expressed his thanks for the large attendance and Rev Ed McColl kept everyone posted as to the progress of the hockey game which he was able to do with the aid of a small radio at the back of the hall.Mr Main then thanked his vice-president, Mr Leonard Horner and then spoke glowingly of his respect and appreciation of Mrs Marks. He welcomed Dr Gregory saying Shawville and the hospital wefe most fortunate in acquiring her services.Mr Main announced that finances were not in a good shape and he said he was sorry that so many local merchants had to carry them for so many months but that they i » Andai Photo Victoria School marches again tions in Pontiac as their schooling here ends this year. They are, however, doing their utmost to shoulder responsibility as concerned citizens of this County in using whatever influence they can muster to persuade the CSRO to do something for the large group of pupils who happen to speak English and who happen to be of the Roman Catholic faith and who happen to live in Pontiac County. The last thing this segment of the Pontiac population wishes to do is to leave Quebec. If the CSRO forces them to send their children outside Quebec to school and finally to move out altogether, it will have acted beyond its terms of reference, in the view of the Victoria School students. With the large modern Pontiac High School newly opened in Shawville, it has startled many townspeople to see three hundred children parading down Main Street protesting. There are still people right here in Shawville as there are many outside the area, who do not realize that these three hundred high school children are not permitted to attend the new school because the Catholic School Board does not wish them to.They occupy instead rented premises on Victoria Avenue where facilities are not in step with modern educational practices, and wMere conditions are very crowded.ucational purposes.Interfaith amalgamation, they feel, is not such a revolutionary concept in this era that it should be fought so fiercely by the CSRO.The students feel that the religious aspect of the matter cannot be of concern to the CSRO in view of the fact that the CSRO will employ Protestant teachers.Three hundred children in search of a school marched down Main Street in Shawville Tuesday afternoon chanting “We Protest” and “Down with CSRO”.What they were protesting were the broken promises of their school board, the CSRO, Commission Scolaire Regional de l’Outa- er
