about a so called nursing home.It was full of vindictive complaints, some of which may be justified, we wouldn’t know. But the letter wasn’t signed so we didn’t publish it.However, it leaves a bad taste in our mouth and the next question is, suppose there were less than perfect conditions in a nursing home in Pontiac what could we or anyone do about it?We used to have a Medical Officer of Health, Ur Haddon Rabb of Fort Coulonge. He could have been appealed to and might have inspected the place, if we knew what place the writer was talking about. But Pontiac hasn’t got an MOH anymore ! Obviously the letter writer was really worried about the welfare of the residents in the home in question or he wouldn’t have written the letter. He was also probably afraid to sign his name in case things would go w orse for his relative who lived there ; like parents afraid to criticize the school because it always goes hard fcrr their children afterwards. The writer goes further than just to lash out at one private nursing home and suggests that at what he calls the “Pontiac County Nursing Home” a chosen few capable of caring for themselves are living in luxury while there is no room for an old man unable to care for himself.1 he letter goes on to hope that the Government authorities will look into the matter.Well if we knew exactly what matter it was we might look into it ourselves ; but what place are you talking about, out there? On the other hand, within our responsibility to the public, we feel that the fact that one nursing home has aroused such concern in one person, even one anonymous person, is enough to warrant some sort of official visit from whatever official of the Department of Health and Welfare is responsible for Pontiac, if any.Failing regular inspections of facilities, could we even have one emergency inspection? Then, could we make the official report public, after which if things aren’t quite right they would be improved and if things are OK then let’s all know it and rest assured.ment punis Dans tous les cas ou un chasseur est trouvé coupable, non seulement est-il condamné à l’amende mais, en plus, il perd son natural, unfiltered apple juice in cans and bottles is selling well year a round.it's easy to forget that the juice of the apple was our forefathers' most popular beverage.Ever since colonial times, Ever since the Hon Marc Lalonde, Minister of National Health and Welfare, spoke at Fort Coulonge about his new ideas about social security in Canada, we have been waiting further word about the plan.Today we have received, in answer to our query, a letter from Mr Lalonde’s Executive Assistant stating that the Minister’s proposals are still in the review stage which should be completed by March 1975 and that completion of implementation should be three years after that.Well, even if we have to wait until 1978 for the Lalonde formula it will be worth waiting for, unless it gets destroyed in federal-provincial disputes in the meantime.% Fundamentally the plan, as set forth in his working paper, asks for an acceptable income for all Canadians without interfering with the basic Canadian concepts of individual self-fulfillment and free enterprise.A lot of the plan is already being implemented but when and if they get it all going together it should solve a number of problems now besetting large portion of the local population. One of the propositions is that governments should consider the establishment of a community employment program to provide socially useful employment to people who have been unemployed for an extended period of time or are otherwise unemployable. That’s the proposition which makes such good sense. The community employment program would be run along the lines of the LIP and could provide various jobs such as home care for the sick and disabled, work on environmental protection and beautification, parks and recreation projects, community based child care centres, assistance to the blind, deaf, paralyzed, retarded and elderly assistance in community based health care institutions and so forth. The above are listed in the plan, we all think of others. The whole plan, if and when, will depend on a lot of operation between existing agencies. This need has always been recognized by the Pontiac Social Planning Council and has in fact been realized here to a certain extent, by this Council. It hasn’t been easy and it didn’t come quickly, but actually at the present time, in Planning Council’s building at Campbell’s Bay the offices of the Provincial Department of Health and Welfare, the Federal Canada Manpower Center, the regional Social Services, Legal Aid, and the County clothing exchange are all under one roof and enjoying the necessary interaction there along with the municipal library.Things will be even better when offices for the Federal Department of Health and Welfare, the Unemployment Insurance Commission, the Workmen’s Compensation Board and some sort of medical first aid care can be housed at the same place, but these things will come.A dental clinic would be another welcome addition. In his working paper Mr Lalonde asks if the housing under a single roof of these agencies would contribute materially to better co-ordination.The Pontiac Social Planning Council has proved that this can be done, not without a great struggle, but it can be done, even in Pontiac.1978 seems a long time to wait for the implementation of the whole Lalonde plan but with the good start we have here in this County we have jumped the gun on some aspects of it.The rest is just a lot of red tape for the governments to sort out, and we wish them lots of luck.a) Certificat et underscore the importance of soil fertility: The cancer death rate is lower in geographic areas where the selenium content of the soil is high. That was reported earlier this year by Dr Raymond J Shainberger of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, after studing the trace mineral's distribution near 34 American cities. There is a link between geography and health, and it runs through the soil.Just as soils vary tremendously In composition and quality, so do our foodstuffs that spring from these soils. For example, the apply you cat today may have more or less of what's good for you than the apply you ate last week, if it came from a different region.Id dine soils are created equal "Goiter Belt" around the Great Lakes disturbances because crops grown there were deficient in iodine. Finally potassium iodide was added to table salt as a substitute for the iodine missing in the soil, and that health problem vanished. On the other hand, soils may have plenty of iodine but be lacking in other nutrients.Combine such variation with tlie shifting sources of supply for supermarket produce, and you get some idea of the "pot luck" element in food buying.Food and Drug Administration scientists discovered, for example, that some market carrots sold in tlie East contained more than three times as much manganese, a necessary trace mineral, than other carrots. The fluctuations arose because of an April influx of carrots with high manganese content from southern California, followed in the summer by " low manganese" carrots grown in central California and New Jersey. The manganese content of soil, by tlie linked with the amount of human cancer in After investigating regional soil and health patterns in that country, researcher Helvi Marganen reported a few
