in bid for popular support Eardley wants new road as soon as possible" Lavigne II The letter suggested that the new road as planned would endanger the properties, liveihoods, homes end ways of life of the people in this unspoiled historic part of Canada.Sixty five citizens of Eardley Township met in tie Town Hall Saturday night at a hastily called public meeting to discuss the proposed new highway which has been sought for almost half a century by the people of that district.Mayor la vigne stated that he spoke for the majority of the people of hardiev in saying tleir least worry is where tic new highway v ill go."We want a road" he declared, " and if wc delay it I will he ashamed to be a citizen of Eardley".Tie meeting was charged with emotion as Mrs Hod son tried to maintain some sort of order. She distributed maps and suggested that everyone present should draw upon it their own choice of where the new highway inoiild he.She also read various letters, ( which Mayor Marcel la vigne, who had been invited to attend, graciously translated) and one from Tom lefebvre stated that reconsideration of the routing of the road would cause further delay. The petition included a list of 59 properties which were called heritage homes, described by Mrs Hodson as properties whose deeds could be traced more than 100 years and which she therefor claimed should never be traversed by the new highway.Asked why the committee didn't consult the public before sending out their petitions, Mrs Hodson stated that they "had to get acknowledgement from the government before making our doings public".Having discovered the planned routing of the new high way, a group of rate payers who have bought properties on the old Hurd man farm decided it should be somewhere else and formed a committee on March 14th which they named the "Eardley Road Community Association".This committee, under the chairmanship of Russell Hurd man and secretary Jean Hodson, has already written letters to the Department of Transportation and many other officials both Federal and Provincial, ; an alternate route so as to leave the present t now is.Mrs Joe Archambault said she would start early Monday morning collecting signatures on a petition requesting early action on tlie new road "wherever they want to put it, even if if goes right through my living room ! " The Mayor said ik- wcnld bring the matter to the attention of his ( our,ci 1 and would make the wishes of this elected body known to all those who had received tlie petition mailed out by Mrs Hodson.F he general lee ling one got at the meeting was that any delay in the already interminably delayed new road would he unpopular.Harold Bartlett stated that he had also sent a petition to the government objecting to the proposed routine of the new highway which would come to within 25 feet of his house.proposing road as i Tie tumultuous crowd wanted no delay.Emile Vaillant stated that the routing suggested by the mittce which called this meeting was the stupidest he had ever imagined.Elle Perrault said he had been waiting for tlie new road for 45 years and wanted no furtfier delay.Others who use the road daily stood and applauded agreement.com- The Ralstons also objected because they feared that their old stone house might be demolished to make room for the new highway.Mrs Hodson read the letter to the assembled rate payers Saturday night to which her audience responded with wild and noisy disapproval.Sha wville Midgets win 6 ftst * Ottawa Valley Championships t'fcr.r* E A Cinderella Story for a region that tlie FI cattlebreeding program will be continued again this year throughout the Ottawa Valley Territory. The mating season for this program began on March 15 and will end about mid-August.The FI program has been operating in different parts of Quebec for tlie past three years and has proved profitable for participating farmers.According to Mr Ouellette, tlie agricultural department's inseminators estimate that about 8,000 cows could profitably be inseminated in tlie region this year.Semen from Blonde d'Aquitaine bulls belonging to the St Hyacinthe A.I.Centre is used for the purposes of - • program in the region. As regards appearance, : main characteristics of this breed are a pale-red and black coat and pink mucosc of nose and eyes.HOW TO GET AN FI CALF: FI or first generation hybrid beef-dairy calves are a dairy cow with a beef bull of a begotten by mating local or imported nreed. For the present program, the agricultural department •advised farmers to use cows wliose milk production is considered rather limited.FINANCIAL ASPECT OF THE FI PROGRAM: For calves from a cross between a dairy cow and a Blonde d'Aquitaine bull which weigh from 350 to 400 pounds, farmers in the region will receive a minimum of $L10 a pound of live weight and 75 rents per pound over 400.Thank?to this program, Ottawa Valley farmers will earn extra income and put their less satisfactory cows to best use.Furthermore, the returns from the sale of their FI calves, will he able to buy replacement females for their dairy herd which are better than some of those they now have.Interested farmers may obtain any further information tliey would like to have about this matter by consulting Maurice Le may of Shawville.Change in Federal beef premium been very disappointed by the lack of cooperation that has been shown by varions segments of the industry."I have been accused of forcing things down tlie industry’s throat. The cattlemen's organizations say that they want the premium program phased out but the quickly add that they want something to replace it.What they suggest would cost just as much and might cause serious trading difficulties.A change in the federal government's beef premium program has been announced by Agriculture Minister Eugene Whelan. As of Monday, April 1, tlie federal government will pay a premium of five cents per pound on ?11 Canadian cattle marleted for immediate slaughter that fall, within Grades A, B and C.Under the previous program, there was a seven-cent payment on Grade A cattle only. The five-cents a pound premium on all grades equates to the seven-cent premium on Grade A cattle. That is, tlie same total amount of money is involved.Cows and mature bulls that fall within the D and E grades are excluded.Mr Whelan said the change in the system of payment was made to meet complaints that difficulties were being encountered in determining the grade of animals when they were being marketed.Procedures for payment remain the same. That is, the premium will be paid to producers by the packer at the time of sale and the packer will be reimbursed by the government."This change should overcome tlie problems that have arisen, " Mr Whelan said."I would add that I have y "After all, if the cattlemen are going to get money- and I believe they should get then that money must program work."I would remind everyone that this program is not intended as a longterm solution. It is temporary and will be phased out just as soon as the market returns to normal, " Mr Whelan
