Bill Smiley returned to j Pontiac farm union presidency I Union)\t.F'™.n\tf***™ and P^.bly the largest in the Provi 4* Sgt Nadeau, chief of the Campbell's Bay detachment of the Quebec Police Force, met with County Council last Friday to explain some police matters to the Mayors there assembled. They discussed the laws regarding snowmobiles.Mayor Hérault was concerned about municipal responsibility if accidents occurred on municipal roads. He was assured that the law states that snowmobiles are not permitted to use the roads in any case and that if accidents occur to snowmobilers on their own club trails they are covered by their own club insurance. This did not completely satisfy Mayor Hérault because whether they are permitted by law or not it is a fact that people do drive their snowmobiles on the roads.Sgt.Nadeau also reported on the decrease of thefts over the past year, attributing this in great part to Operation Volcano whereby people engrave their license number on their valuable equipment and furniture. Then when a policeman is making spot check and finds this furniture he can check the license number and determine the name of the rightful owner in 30 seconds. The Sgt said an officer would come to meet with any organization requesting Operation Volcano to be explained further and demonstrated to the members, and would also lend out the engraving machine at no cost.Sgt Nadeau said the machine only costs about $16 and in view of the protection it brings to people against theft of their valuable articles, he said it might be advisable for municipalities or service clubs or even private individuals to have their own.As for accidents, Sgt Nadeau said he hopes his staff further cut down on accidents this year.Although drivers find the road blocks and car checks a great nuisance, he said this not only cuts down on accidents but also on car À -*»>« * ' t U Wm! \"\"\" Tu\"dv *\u201c - All farmers who sell $1000 or more of produce in a
