services as an entrepreneur to traders and farmers and did what he could to encourage people to stay and develop this part of the Ottawa Valley. This and much more information was told by Gilles 28.1978 The Printshop Shawville, Que by Dick Bowie v ,1 1 In Wyamn MacKechnie's very fine and interesting book, in which he refers to What Men they were, but I would like to draw attention to a certain man, and say what men they are.It is a man called Alex Davis of Quyon, maybe the oldest Practising Blacksmith today.Alex still goes daily to his shop in his back yard, where he still builds show buggies, and attends to the many things, for the farmers. He also still keeps a good road horse and this year she has a fine foal.I met this man 52 years ago this winter, in the long Log Camp belonging to Gillies Bros at the John Bull Depot, on John Bull Creek one hundred miles north of Otter Lake, Quebec, where he was only known as Young Alex, to the hundreds of men in that vast wilderness, where he was blacksmith for Gillies, at their head camp, and jumping of place for their vast timber limits, with its many camps, Alex had all the worst horses, to shoe, often I heard it said, when Young Alex picks up a foot, he never lets go till that shoe is on.He was a very strong young man.Once Alex was asked.Where did you learn your trade, and his reply was, I never learned it, I just grabbed a hammer and started in.The only means of travel in those days was by horses, and it took five days for a team with a load to go from Otter Lake to the John Bull Depot.Sometimes I saw young Alex hold horses foot till the horse went down, but Alex stayed up.That night in the camp at the John Bull, as a very young boy I was feeling a long way from home, as I sat on the long log bench along the wall, he slipped up to me quietly and started to ask all about Quyon and Bristol, and it kept running through my head, who is this man that knows so much about our country.Of the number there that night, only Young Alex and Gilbert Sheppard and myself are around today.Gilbert and I shared the same bed, that was a blanket on the floor. We were paid $2.50 a day, for a man and big team, or $2.00 for a man and small team. Our pay started at Campbell's Bay and back in the spring if you stayed the run.The snow was awfully deep that winter, and the wolves were thick.Often we would find a deer carcass in the morning where they had been hauled down.Young Alex served four winters between McLaughlin's and Gillies, as blacksmith. ; < Campbell's Bay was very quiet over the Canada Day weekend and in particular on Saturday with the big birthday party for CANADA'S 111th at Shawville.Could it be that these three ones in 111 could be an omen of good fortune for this great, but troubled country of ours. The action waa in Shawville and there was plenty of it for all.The parade was a fantastic success and a credit to the organizers. The Pontiac Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was well represented with members from Campbell's Bay, Calumet Island, Bryson, Otter Lake, and Fort Coulonge. The Pembroke Branch No.72 had a good representation as well as a terrific band. With no offence meant to the Official party viewing the parade, it should be pointed out that when a colour party ia on parade, the salute should be taken while standing at attention, and not SITTING.Perhaps just an oversight but something to remember in the future.* ,v** f Deans celebrate 40th anniversary WHAT’S HAPPENING IN QUEBEC?Several people have told us recently that nobody in Pontiac knows what is happening in Quebec.Even our Provincial delegate, in an interview for the French language Ottawa newspaper “Le Droit” is reported to have noted the deficiency of the media in Pontiac County which carries “almost no news of Quebec”.This, he says, is why he doesn’t speak in the Legislative Assembly in Quebec, because he says even if he asked fifty questions in a year his constituents would never know about it.As predicted in this column several weeks ago, the wheels are turning to have the English Catholic high school in Fort Coulonge, much to the dismay of a majority of local school commissioners, as well as most parents and students.Fort Coulonge interests have presented a strong front to the Outaouais Regional School board, and to say the least, they were only too willing to cooperate. However, all ia not yet lost, and a united stand is being formed to combat this extremely unpopular decision. Many feel construction in Fort Coulonge will only result in one more "white elephant” in this county.God only knows, there are enough. We were greatly impressed by the recent letter of Mr Wyman MacKechnie in the Equity. Here ia a man with courage of conviction and a strong defender of our freedoms.I urge all of you to listen closely to his remarks concerning this country of ours.Don't miss the Unity message of Don Jamieson, Minister of External Affairs for Canada. It is without a doubt a masterpiece of Unity action. We have gravely misjudged this remarkable man heretofore, I'm afraid.Mr and Mrs Lennis Dean celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on June 25, 1978, at an Open House arranged by their family at the farm home of their daughter and son in law, Brent and Audrey Sharpe.Their four children were present, Frances of South Porcupine, John of Camp Borden, Robert of Ottawa and Audrey of Shawville. ' The weather co-operated beautifully as over 200 friends, relatives and neighbours gathered to offer congratulations during the afternoon and evening.Willing friends served refreshments continuously on the spacious lawn with Robina Richardson and Nanny Fulford presiding at the tea table.Kinfolk from Montreal in the East and South Porcupine in the North visited, reminisced and renewed old acquaintances while also enjoying the gorgeous summer atmosphere among trees and flowers. As a memento of the ocassion gifts were received from their families, the neighbours, the Lionettes, Lions Club and many individuals for which they expressed their deep appreciation. However, the celebration didn't end there, the icing on the cake was still to come.Three days later the bride and groom of 40 years, accompanied by Rev Leslie Dean and his wife, Ethel, left by air for a three week holiday in the British Isles.Plans were to see London first and then motor through England and Scotland.Well there is a way to let them know, and its right here. When our Federal Member takes action, or his government makes a move which is of interest to the people here, he lets us know. The news flows to THE EQUITY from his office in such abundance that we don't always have room for it in the limited space at our disposal This paper is the easiest paper in the
