CULTURAL AFFAIRS IN THE PONTIAC IF AT FIRST one member of each and every family in the village.Such a demonstration of interest in a library shows that we Pontiackers are indeed concerned in cultural matters. The availability of good books for the public to read is of great value in any community.Aa these libraries are founded and flourish in more and more of this County's villages our entire society becomes more and more privileged.THE EQUITY is delighted to add its congratulations to all the libraries, up to and including this latest one at Waltham, and most particularly to the many individuals and public-minded firms who helped the committees involved.Culture is indeed alive and well in the Pontiac, thanks to people like these. One of the most culturally oriented activities in this County is the establishment of public libraries in the various centers of population. The latest of these libraries to become a reality after months and months of preparation is the one at Waltham.Of tremendous significance is the fact that one quarter of the town’s population turned out for the opening. The Council» of Clarendon, Bristol, Thorne and Shawville have come up with a splendid idea which will eventually have good results. They have each appointed specific councillors to get together with their counterparts on the other three councils and organise their thoughts on particular problems which face them By 8 Wyman MacKechnie With the rapid development of railways following their advent around 1860 and onward, a whole new way of travel developed and with it a new way of Ufa aa well limited to 40 or 60 miles a day, the railroed could take paseengers several hundred miles in a few hours, and in comparative comfort, in any kind of weather. There was the added advantage of a degree of sociability not enjoyed by previous means of travel, a factor much appreciated by my Aunt Tillie. However, just because railways were rapidly being built all across the continent this did not mean there was no further need for the faithful horse. There were many trips to be made where no railway would ever run.The role of the driving-horee was still very important as we shall Almost every householder possessed a good driving team and rig and took good care of them. For that care they were well repaid.all.Since the whole project is new and there are not even any rough guidelines for the conduct of this sort of inter municipal cooperation, there are bound to be countless disappointments and endless non-productive hours before the eventual good results are realized. Some of us might become disgusted with the way these joint meetings are going. Some of us will of course be depressed with the seeming waste of time.I, personally, was ready to chuck the whole idee (even though I was one of its strongest advocates) this week when a matter of importance was agreed to at the joint meeting and then rejected by three of the four mayors in a surprise non-move in County Council five days Just imagine bow enormous a hall would be needed if one quarter of Ottawa's population would turn out for a library opening there! In Waltham, the one out of four attendance means that an even one hundred dtisens shared in the festivities. The number may seem small, but proportionately it represents at least CORRECTION AND APOLOGY later.the ensuing conversations with people in the hall reveal that there was a misunderstanding of Mr.Whelan’s intention on our part.We hereby apologize for any inconvenience or embarrassment we may Having obtained a transcript of the Hon.Eugene Whelan’s speech at Quyon in February, we find that his remarks about newspapers were not exactly as reported in THE EQUITY.Tapes of his speech and have caused Mr.Whelan.I was right in the middle of my "let’s drop the whole It was all settled.Tillie McCredie and the two children would leave in a few days tor a month’s visit to her three brothers in the West.Of course she would take the children.notion of joint meetings" speech when one of my Mow councillors reminded me how vehemently I hsd persuaded him to stick in there and keep trying to make inter municipal plans work.He was right, of course, and his particular joint project is on the verge of success, only after he and those working with him have gone through many depressing setbacks. So, on we go with this novel scheme. The joint meetings will continue.I will try to contain my fury and try to have more patience with those who see things differently than I do.There is always the possibility they ere right and I am wrong, although my gut feeling is that since our whole inter municipal committee agreed on the issue at hand it couldn’t have been all wrong.Percy seven and Berna four and a half with her, at that age they would travel free on the train.Besides her husband Jim couldn't very well look after them at home. Her brothers were all married and had children of their own, it would be good for the young cousins to meet.Tillie had just returned from the post office where she hsd mailed letters to her brothers Alex, Joe and Jim telling them when to expect her.The family Tillie belonged to was a large one, sixteen in all, so it was to be expected that many of the sons, not only of this family but neighboring ones as well, would leave the farm where they had been born and raised and would seek greener pastures elsewhere.Alex and Joe had gone to North Dakota twelve years before, 1881 it was and were now farming just a few miles apart in that great prairie state.Jim the youngest of all the sons had followed seven years later and was homesteading just over the line in Manitoba. The international boundary meant little in those days of the 1880's and Ws so Dear Editor the three brothers got together quite often.None had ever The U.P.A.delegate, «y the U.P.A.la the Fanner, yet the bee" back since leaving the East.Naturally they would •eæk ztzz a’SVSTe - », er- »¦>* - better unlesa, we the farmers, try to make it work for ua.In and door f*cl?ry’ » hnuly firm, held a prommen p in e sas “ sssmrs ^ The construction of the new "La Maiaon" should be put to a where Tilhe and her brothers had been bom and raised halt, a vote taken, and let the majority rule. This vote could be "d where members of the family still termed in afeht of the done by return mail.(If they go ahead with the construction qf Province of Ontario just across the broad Ottawa Rb*."La Maison".I'd like a room with a view). ^ for the tnp included plans to meet the Another item the termer, should demand la a summary (not transcontinental train at «atey» Station at 2 a.m.on tiio in great detail, of the year's U.P.A.financial statement, to be morwng f W ^olved a sixteen mile drive in the included with their bill middle of the night with a horse and rig.An ungodly hour. The ‘‘Terre-Ch ex Noua" is a weekly newspaper, put out for Tillie thought, to have to meet a train especially with two the U.P.A., which ia primarily French with only one English Foung children but Jim reasoned that in the case of a page. This newspaper contains up-tod.te information on all de*mrtion several thousand mdes away and the teste running assets of agriculture, unfortunately the newspaper is not d-y and night from one side ofthe continent to the other it ESi^ae8BaBsSES?%S jzzrrtratras ltzzr.zz z ü m the U.P.A would probably be impossible so let's try to keep *or 38 year8, improve what we have.//i c Letters from our readers UFA.Let’s make it work!
