Each community along the way welcomed us in a different way.A major highlight of the trip for all of us, was the Pontiac County hospitality. The Village of Bryson sent out escort boats, with large Canadian flags flying that met us at Campbell’s Bay and escorted us the last three or four miles of the leg from Fort Coulonge into Bryson. We were then treated to a tasty lunch in the Town Hall. After which the Tourist Association of Bryson presented each paddler with scrolls which commemorated our visit to Bryson. In Portage du Fort we all enjoyed the dinner served at the new ball field.Portage residents staged a ball game on our behalf and later an impromptu game of volleyball that ensued with the paddlers, "(next time I think that even with our tired muscles, wouldn’t mind trying our hand on the baseball diamond in a friendly match). The community presented all of us with a beautiful Portage du Fort hats to mark our stop over.We also appreciated the use of the Portage ball park for a very peaceful night's sleep. These kind gestures by both Bryson and Portage du Fort has each paddler distinctive mementos of our visit to the and fifty brought forward to last weekend’s Forum. As a result, it is probably safe to say that the four that made it through sound and well conceived.Yet it would be a mistake to assume that the battle is won.November’s Summit comes with no guarantee that its recommendations will be automatically accepted by those in power. All that is certain is that the projects are now considered priorities within the region and that they will receive some attention from the appropriate provincial Ministers. The possibility of an election taking place between now and the summit, or soon after, makes even more uncertain their future: the ministers’ and the projects.Last weekend, a small but dedicated delegation from Pontiac, went to Hull to defend the County’s interests at the Outaouais Socio-economic Summit Forum. The purpose of the forum was to choose 50 projects out of 180 proposals from throughout the Outaouais that will be presented to the appropriate government departments for consideration over the next two months. The appropriate ministers will announce publicly whether they will support the projects at the summit itself, to be held November 15-17 at Mont Ste Mane. With only 10 out of the 250 delegates at the forum, the Pontiac delegates had to lobby fast and furiously throughout the weekend in order to promote their five projects. But rise to the occasion they did, urging the other delegates to provide 44 jobs in the Pontiac’’ by voting in favour of a cedar processing plant (‘Cedars of the Pontiac’), a cooperative tourist lodgings and camp, a wool processing and manufacturing industry (‘Pontiac Wool Works ), an acute care wing for Pontiac Community Editorial Hospital and a bridge connecting Calumet Island, Fort Coulonge and Mansfield-Pontefract.Three projects survived the voting to be adopted at the Forum: Cedars of the Pontiac, Pontiac Wool Works, and the $8 million acute care addition to Pontiac Community Hospital.A fourth project.Rocher Fendu Park, a ‘living museum’ featuring Indian and Metis crafts and cultural activities, was accepted at an earlier stage in the summit. The two projects that did not make it were the lodgings cooperative and the bridge. The delegates to the summit have volunteered many, many hours of their time since last winter in order to participate in the endless discussions that took place prior to the summit. Each of the projects were passed around for review and commentary by the discussion groups before approximately 130 were eliminated are All this to say that there is still work to be done.It is too soon to stop applying individually for the Hospital, pressure Rocher Fendu Park, Cedars of the Pontiac and Wool Works, and also too soon to abandon the other projects that did not receive the Forum’s support.Pontiac.During the Champlain Cup Race, we all made many new friends on both sides of the river. We learned about our heritage, our history, and more important enjoyed the mighty Ottawa River and the people who call it their home.Faye Hallett and John Vlchek, from Prince George.British Columbia dropped in for a visit with me after they completed their voyage across Canada from Rocky Mountain House to Montreal. They both could not believe the hospitality they found in the Ottawa Valley and mentioned in particular the communities of the Pontiac. This past weekend many of the Champlain Cup paddlers again enjoyed the Ottawa by participating in the Tour dUe des Allumettes.Again we had the opportunity to visit Chapeau we had the opportunity to join in on their Fall Fair.So on behalf of all the participants of the Champlain Cup, thank you for welcoming us to your communities, for your company, friendship and hospitality. We sincerely hope that our travels will cross again before next year’s bigger and better Champlain 1 Cup Race.If not certainly we look forward to getting to meet and canoe with more residents of the Pontiac in 1986.* kl Born to lead In a quiet Ottawa suburb, a woman with a large black dog in a white harness comes striding along self-confidently.As she approaches the edge of the sidewalk, the dog starts to pull back, then sits down. The woman waits.A car goes by.The dog gets up and the two cross the street and continue their walk.A few minutes later, a man with a German Shepherd and a woman with a golden retriever go through the same routine. The first woman is Ghislaine Béland of Grand'mère, Quebec and she is totally blind.Réal Galarneau of Hull (and summer resident of Luskville) has some residual sight and Bonnie Kowbuz of Ottawa has been blind since birth. The three are students in Canada s first guide dog train-centre, Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.Bill Thornton, qualified guide dog trainer and president of the registered charity, is pleased with their progress. For the past six months, sometimes working blindfolded, he has trained these three dogs to take the initiative in accommodating the person beside them, avoiding obstacles and watching out for traffic. Now, over the next four weeks, he must effectively transfer the dogs' allegiance from himself to their new owners and were z 4 I i il Robert Barlow Deep River
