last year.Breaking records has become a tradition in the past few years with attendance jumping to 55,000-plus this year from 34,000 in 1999, a whopping 61 per cent increase in four short years. Each day at this year’s fair, from Thursday’s opening to Monday’s close, had a record number of visitors.“I thought that after last year (the first time attendance topped 50,000) we would never see such a large crowd,” says Mavis Hanna, president of the Pontiac Agricultural Society.“I can’t believe so many people found their way to Shawville.” Hanna says the fair board will take into account the rapid rise in attendance when making plans for next year.“We never plan to go backwards,” she says, adding weather is a key to drawing the large crowds.“We ll prepare for a larger crowd and make sure we have enough resources for larger crowd.” A fair that focuses on family, fun and farming with a solid midway, high-calibre entertainment and a smorgasbord of food products is a big part of the package, but it’s the people behind the scenes that make it happen.“There are about 500 community volunteers that support every event, from the cattle shows to the beer tent,” says Hanna, adding the fair's success hinges on the tremendous efforts of the dedicated volunteers.Another remarkable aspect of the fair is the relative lack of problems such as fighting or other violent acts. The fairgrounds were patrolled by members of the Pontiac MRC Sûreté du Québec and a team of orange T-shirt-wearing security personnel.“There were so few minor incidents, they are not even worth mentioning.” she says.“When you have this many people and only minor incidents .’* With so many out-of-towners
