llrst-in-a-long-time blood donor clinic held at the Lions Beach Bam.Last Tuesday, Quyon volunteer firefighters hosted a one-day blood donor clinic.Organizer Paul Desjardins was extremely pleased with the turnout.QUYON t km ¦ & “We had 76 people from the community come out to give blood. That’s pretty good for Quyon," said Desjardins.“Héma-Québec had hoped for 1(H) donors, but considering the size of the community and the weather > % ¦i .-t very cold temperatures 76 is an excellent turnout." m.m Héma-Québec provides all the equipment and staff to hold a clin- « * -A i S 1C “They were very good and very professional and set up very quickly," said Desjardins.Donors are required to answer a number of questions to check their suitability for donating.Following a questionnaire and a small pin prick, to check blood type, donors are escorted to nurses w ho perform the donation procedure.Blood donations take about 10 - 15 minutes after which donors are given some juice and donuts and asked to rest for a few minutes prior to resuming their regular day.Héma-Québec states that blood is an irreplaceable resource. The collective blood supply entirelv depends on the generosity of people.Blood donors must continue to give the gift of life in order to ensure that the reserve is maintained at a level that can supply the needs of Quebecers. Each gift of blood is precious, serving to save up to four lives.Héma -Quebec can be contacted at 1-877-866-4362.DUMMY BOMB: An officer with the Sûreté du Quebec's bomb squad, photo left, checks out the remains of a homemade bomb after the squad's robot, photo right, used high pressure water to cause it to explode on Allan Black Road near the hospital Thursday. The dummy bomb was found in a red duffel bag in a nearby ravine.remains of the bomb were sent to Montreal for forensic analysis.9 Known Stew art is the middle son of Lindsay Stewart, who was murdered on his Calumet Island farm in 1999.Lindsav s frozen body w as found in a * * snow bank near his house about two weeks after he was reported missing. He had been shot three times with a .22-calibre rifle.Though Brent and his older brother Neil 9:45 a m.Following lengthy preparations, the bomb squads remote controlled robot pulled the dut tel bag up on to the road at about 11 a m.The “bomb" was a couple of foot-long propane cylinders bound together w ith duct tape.A couple of “D" cell batteries with wires leading from them were attached to the makeshift device.“After the bomb squad looked at it.they said it was a Rural dwellers, after all, pay the same federal and provincial taxes as city dwellers, but tend to be neglected when it comes time to divvy up the public purse. When it comes to health care.Pontiac must he the envy of the city-folk, w ith an up-to-date hospital w ith tele-medicine, a CT scan and short waiting lists in ER.As well, the several CLSCs are there to provide for the needs of the patients liv ing farther away from the hospital. Our schools, despite w hat the surv ey says, get the job done, but can be only as good as the efforts made hy the teachers and.most importantly, the students. If the general, accepted attitude amongst the students is that “school sucks" and they w ill have no need of education in their futures, then even the greatest teachers in the world would fail to get the message across.Ground was gained with the Quebec government’s Rural Pact, which recognizes the specific needs of rural areas and actually ponies up some money to enhance the quality of rural life.But.more is needed. It makes sense that our provincial government is concerned about our drinking water supplies, hut when it expects small municipalities to pay half the cost of, for example, a filtration plant, its expectations exceed the capabilities of rural communities.Alter all.aren't prov incial taxes in place to provide us w ith infrastructure? How much of our money is spent on the frivolous, the water fountains, flower gardens, and cultural propaganda? It doesn’t lake a rocket scientist to prioritize the specific needs of Pontiac.First and foremost is a good highway.Hwy.148 is a pathetic joke that shakes and rattles a vehicle all the way to an early burial in the junk yard. And, try driving at night, when the “lines' disappear into the pavement, causing many a driver wondering where the pavement ends and the shoulder begins.Secondly, if we want to attract secondary and tertiary industries and more people to our communities, we need proper potable water supplies and sewage treatment facilities. It seems our provincial government is more concerned with spending money on standardizing fire departments (to appease the insurance lobby) and forcing the closure of small dumps (to appease the environmental lobby ).But.most of all, Pontiac needs a regional body willing and able to stand up to the government’s demands, and a populace standing ! behind them. It's time to say no to programs forced from on high that don't apply, at least so hurriedly, to rural needs.this hotel a popular locale for annual festivities of various clubs in the area.Estimate to EQUITY that he intends to rebuild his hotel on the same site but it is too early to sav for sure. _ Bryson honours Ivan Saunders: Mr Ivan al Coulonge on Monday night when they vision as compared with conventions held he done to save themselves the lalal colli- Saunders who held the Office of Secretary defeated Campbell’s Bay by a score of 2 - 0. during the past.About two o’clock the del- sion occurred. The train was stopped and Funeral of Mrs J Prendergast largely égalés got down to business and whether every relief afforded by the train hands, but Treasurer in Bryson tor the past 14 years is leaving it at the end of this month The attended: The funeral of the late Mrs John from the rejuvenating influences of a good in the case of the mother and son there was Council wanted to recognize this long service C Prendergast, who died at the home of her dinner, or anxiety to dispose of a knotty nothing to do as they were dead.Their bod- hy presenting him with an engraved clock, daughter Mrs J Moore, Campbell’s Bay, question, they shortly reached a decision to ies presented a sickening sight.YOUR OPINION has generated an energy I had not seen before.Everyone, at every level, is collaborating and for one single purpose; success for all, one student at a time.I want to take this opportunity of thanking those students, staffs, parents and especially our volunteers, who make our schools and centres the thriving educational places they are.Every school and centre has a happy determined hum about it; teaching and learning is fun in Western Quebec.I would like to challenge the local newspapers in spending a day in any one of our schools and centres and reporting on what education and schooling really looks like and what it really means to the future of our students. In my opinion that would be better journalism than sensational headlines based on out-of-date data and would serve the Anglophones of Western Quebec better.Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to visit many educational institutions across the worlds and speak with international educators so I can state with confidence that the schools in the Western Quebec School Board are indeed world class institutions.achieving 100 per cent in the final provincial examinations. We said we would concentrate on our literacy skills at the elementary level; we have done this by introducing literacy facilitator programmes. The result of the DRA/DWA assessments show the fruit of our labours. We have been able to achieve these improvements and successes through professional development. At these times we train our staff in the best practices of teaching and learning, in the new curriculum reform, “The QEP” and in the latest methods of assessments. At the same time as we have been concentrating on improving our academics, we have also maintained our schools as being socially and emotionally safe and secure at all times. There are programmes for the diverse needs of many of our students and staff. There are also many opportunities for our students and staff to appreciate, learn and develop greater understandings of the world beyond classroom.Participation in cultural activities and team sports is encouraged. Each Fall I visited every school and centre and this year was no exception.I reviewed the School Success plans with the principal and, when possible, members of governing boards.I was as particularly struck this year by the measurable success indicated in those plans; targets had been set in a variety of areas and had, in most cases, been exceeded. These successes had focused governing boards and schools staffs into meaningful educational directions for their schools and centres which Winter Invitational ‘04 Goodbye Dear Editor, On Friday, Dec.19 I said “goodbye” to Organizing Committee is pleased to all my colleagues at the Western Quebec announce that the Shaw ville Figure School Board and turned the page on a Skating Club will be hosting its fourth nearly 40 year career in education, inter-provincial competition on February 28-29, 2004 at the Shaw ville Arena. The last 26 years as a teacher and administrator competition will be held with figure skat- in this region. My last position, that of ing clubs participating from the directory-general of the Western Quebec Outaouais, Abitibi-Temiscaminge, Eastern School Board, has been a humbling experi-Ontario and the Laurentians. This is the ence for the past eight years.I have wit-perfect occasion to showcase our figure nessed many, many people who work daily skaters on home ice and to welcome par- and tirelessly in pursuit of excellence and ticipants and spectators to our community, success for our students in our elementary, This figure skating event has become a secondary schools, in our daycare pro-two-day event and it attracts people to our grams, in our adult and vocational centres, wonderful region. This will represent a They had made me feel very proud to have wonderful opportunity for the Pontiac been part of such a dedicated, committed Region and the Municipality of Shaw ville and educated faculty, to feature the community’s winter tourist activities. The competition would not have succeeded if we did not have all the outstanding volunteers we have in our town and area.Should you be able to help in any way, either by volunteering or donation please do not hesitate to contact me at (613) 990- brought in high scores in our elementary 8148 or (819) 647-5932.We look forward reading and writing assessments, and in our to your support in this worthy and commu- high school leaving results.Furthermore, we graduate more students than any other school board in the region. Our “Directions Lyse Lacourse 2000” clearly stated that we wanted to Committee Chair improve our math scores and we have!
