Express at the midget national championships, who finished the tournament in second place after the playoff round was truncated because of unrelenting rain throughout the week.Graham was named MVP of the tournament. He hit a three-run, walk-off home run in the playoffs to defeat the Newfoundland representative 8-6 in the last game completed by the Express before the tournament ended prematurely.Graham batted .280 in the tournament, contributing five RBI.He also had a 2.74 ERA in 13 and two-thirds innings pitched.Greer, meanwhile, was playing with the Quebec representatives at the junior championships. Please see FLYERS on page two At**- -i- ¦.Wilbur McLean. The Equity Quyon Flyer Steve McCord takes a hack at a pitch from Ottawa Team Easton hurler Dan Konkle Tuesday, August 4.Bristol combats crime with cameras Wilbur McLean. The Equity A new sign warns people in Norway Bay that video cameras have been installed to help curb the rash of petty crime that has affected the public beach area.WILBUR MCLEAN Equity Editor NORWAY BAY • In an attempt to combat vandalism and thefts, surveillance cameras have been installed in Norway Bay by the Municipality of Bristol.A total of 11 cameras have been installed at the public beach portion of Norway Bay, at both the park and the pier.Petty crime in Norway Bay peaks during the summer months.“There was a lot of vandalism here,” said Bristol councillor Steve Forbes. He cited stolen garbage bins, a smashed door, stolen rose bushes and defaced picnic benches as being some of the problems faced over the last few years.“1 would estimate we've been paying $8,000 a year just for vandalism,” said Forbes. The cameras cost about $7,500 to purchase and install, according to Forbes.“It’s something we’ve been looking at doing for the last four or five years, but we finally got a good price on them.” The cameras are motion sensitive and don’t use a tape.Instead, when the cameras are activated, security personnel at the camera company’s head office monitors the cameras and have the ability to contact the police, fire department and Forbes, who also heads Norway Bay’s Neighbourhood Watch program. The cameras were installed in mid-July.“Since we put them up, there’s been nothing," said Forbes.“In the long run it’s going to save us a lot of money.” The camera system is also transportable, so if another problem area in the municipality develops, the cameras could be moved there.Pontiac has suffered from a rash of thefts in recent months, affecting a number of local businesses.A ’61 Buick gets stuck in the mud % Annual Portage du Fort classic car show welcomes enthusiasts CHRISTINA GRAY Equity Reporter PORTAGE DU FORT • It was an unfortunate way to arrive at a classic car show, that’s for sure.John Lavigne rolled up to the show in Portage du Fort on Saturday in his beautiful black 1961 Buick, backed into a spot and promptly felt his back tire sink into the ground. He’d parked right on top of the River Club’s septic tank.He didn’t seem too bothered by it though.“It’s only mud," he said.“It’s wash- able.” They jacked up the car, got a two-by-four underneath the tire, pushed hard and off he went. His next stop was the river to wash it off.His ‘61 Buick was part of the eighth annual classic car show that draws visitors and participants from both sides of the river.Since the River Club has recently changed owners, it was a smaller show than normal, according to organizer Ted Howard. This year, he said there were 37 cars in the show which was also partially organized by the Antique Car Club of Pembroke.“Next year it will be a much bigger production,” he said. The oldest car in the show was a 1930 Durant model 4-07 belonging to Ron Jeremkow of Foresters Falls, ON.He’s owned the car for eight years, he said and when he first got it, it wouldn’t even run.But it’s just one of two projects he has on the go.“Once you’re retired, what are you going to do with yourself? You've got to have winter toys,” he said. Please see CARS on page two Catden 759-0699 parues 719-4729 latence ^ 274 9957M r*rr ' Many waterfront for sale ranging from $60,000 to $79,900.Otter Lake New Listing Cozy 3 bedroom cottage on 2+ acre lot in a quiet bay on Otter Lake Excellent family cottage $175,000 Farm Lake Excellent bargain'! The final contest between Bryson and Shawville teams of the league matches was pulled off on the Exhibition grounds last Saturday afternoon before a good sized crowd, including many of the fair sex.Ideal weather prevailed, and the respective teams went on to the field, both feeling pretty confident of victory. The game was one of the evenest and most interesting of the series, and pretty clearly demonstrated the fact that of the several teams which compose the league, Bryson leads on the score of improvement in form.Shawville won the match with a score of 18 to 15 and thereby secure their hold on the trophy.Mr.A Smiley’s valuable horse “Larry”, which had one of its feet stubbed by a nail on July 24, died on Thursday, 20 days after tlje accident — despite the Ottawa Valley Antique Association show on Saturday. The day started out with a parade of antique tractors through Shawville. Then the crowd went to Armstrong Heritage Farm to show off the tractors and antique motorcycles, participate in challenges and listen to live music by the Brysonnaires. The event is the only one held during the year by the antique association and it used to be spread over the entire weekend. This year it was just held on Saturday.“We thought we’d do one day this year and see how it went,” said Martha Hodgins, secretary treasurer of the antique association. But the weather kept people away and sent some people home early. There weren’t as many motorcycles this year because of the weather.“People don’t really want them sitting out in the rain,” she said.Despite the rain, Grant Rogers, president of the antique association, had some of his antiques out and on display. In the afternoon, he showed how his 60 year-old threshing mill works to separate oats from straw.Rogers now has quite a collection of tractors.“When I was a young lad we didn’t have tractors,” he said. Now he owns 13 and one of them was in the parade that morning. The rest of the day was dedicated to slow tractor pulls, slow motorcycle races and a tractor teeter-totter competition where a tractor drove up a larger-than-normal teeter-totter and tried to balance in the middle. But by the afternoon the crowd was thinning out because of the weather.“When the rain started, people started leaving," said Hodgins. But she was still pleased and taken the world by storm is the Ultimate Fighting Championship.Essentially, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada. The UFC began as a single-event tournament to find the world's best fighters.Although there were a few, very limited, rules, fighting in the UFC was marketed as “no holds barred”, and contests were often violent and brutal.Early UFC fights were less sport than spectacle, which led to accusations of brutality.Because of its originality, realism and bloodshed, it became an instant hit on pay-per-view.But the nature of the sport quickly drew negative publicity and UFC events were banned in a number of American states. As political pressure mounted in response to the criticism, the UFC gradually re-branded and reformed itself, slowly embracing stricter rules, becoming sanctioned by state athletic commissions, and marketing itself as a legitimate sporting event. With a cable television deal and expansion into Canada, Europe and new markets within the United States, the UFC is currently undergoing a remarkable surge in popularity. In 2006, UFC broke the pay-per-view industry's all-time record for a single year of business, generating over $222,766,000 in revenue. The international growth of the sport is often compared to the international growth of boxing. In many ways, the UFC has overtaken boxing in popularity. An example of this emergence is the increasing number of viewers the sport is getting with its television coverage, compared to those generated by boxing events.I admit that I’ve never actually sat down and watched a full event, I've seen individual matches, but I understand this form of fighting has become a worldwide phenomenon.Even With the rule changes, I feel that UFC is a brutal, sadistic sport that promotes violence and barbarianism.I know that advocates of the sport will declare that MMA is a technical and methodical way of fighting, and takes skill, determination, and discipline. This may be so, but many of the fights I’ve witnessed have been barbaric, and were nothing but violent outbursts and bloody carnage.Boxing will forever be a technical, precision sport.Maybe hot as exciting as an MMA event, actually many boxing matches tend to be more on the boring side, but a boxing match is about outwitting your opponent, combining a defensive/offensive strategy to outthink your opposition. But I do understand the allure to UFC.People love violence. They love to see blood, gore, and pain. It’s the same reason why people like to watch car accidents on TV, or tune in to watch daredevil stunts and close encounters with death —the possibility of death is compelling. It’s a sick fascination with society, but a realistic attraction. It’s not something I would ever advocate, but it’s the nature of the beast.People love blood, and when comparing the UFC to boxing, hands down the MMA rules the roost when it comes to bloodshed. But I don’t think the two can be compared, or ever replace the other. That’s my two cents. What do you think?Murphy is a former professional hockey player who now resides in Shawville.Contact him at newsiathee-quity.ca Wednesday, August 13, 2008 had considerable grain out.Pasturage has been getting very poor of late on account of drough. The village of Quyon was subjected to a Bohemian invasion last week. The accounts that reached here of the doings of the band, to say the least, were alarming and smote terror to the hearts of the juvenile element, who were particularly careful not to stray very far afield in dread of being swooped down upon by one of those swarthy ramblers, when it became noised around that the Gypsy horde had hit the pike for Shawville. All the fear and fuss, however, ended in a bottle of smoke, as the band took the Front Road for Portage du Fort, and gave Shawville the goby for which citizens very were devoutly thankful.Reports say they were a tough looking outfit and well worth watching.?125 Years Ago August 16, 1883 Local news: Wm.Clark, Esq., C.L.A.returned last week from an »v»r' ENVIRONMENTAL FORUM I Clarendon Mayor Jack Lang: Incineration interview Katharine Fletcher This column is the fourth in a series on Pontiac garbage. The Equity broke the story about a potential incinerator that could be constructed near Shawville in front page, headline news on July 16.Since then, I have been exploring the waste issue, including incineration, here.Mayor Lang granted me an interview on Thursday, Aug.7.He’s been reading my columns and, after his holiday, he returned my call to talk about the incinerator which may be constructed in Shawville.First, I asked him what he thinks, overall, of the incinerator concept.Mayor Lang replied, noting, “Well, it seems to be a good idea because putting garbage into a landfill is no solution. If we really want to go green, I think it (incineration) makes sense because we can make electricity, perhaps we can supply enough for the school or hospital.I don’t really know just yet, but this idea is appealing.WeVe talked for years about solutions (to our garbage) and this might be the best one yet.” Yes, weVe all talked for years about what to do with the garbage. And, January, 2009 is only a few short months away, and that’s when Quebec City has decreed all municipalities in Quebec need to reduce their production of waste — plus, have an environmentally acceptable solution.Readers of The Equity know that Pontiac has many in-trench, officially “illegal” dumps and that many of these allow burning, also illegal.I asked Mayor Lang what will happen mid-January 2009, apropos the provincial law.“Well miss the target date, that’s for sure.Well simply have to contact Quebec City and see if they will grant us an extension.Meanwhile, our in-trench dumps may have to be closed and we may have to truck garbage to Lachute.I don’t know yet.” Of course, shipping tonnes of garbage to Lachute will be costly. That’s no ideal solution, as the MRC Pontiac mayors and Mayor Eddie McCann of Municipality of Pontiac (MoP) know all too well.Because I was unclear on what is currently happening regarding the Clarendon and Shawville dump site, Mayor Lang explained the current situation.“Many years ago Clarendon and Shawville purchased 100 acres. We planted some of it with a tree plantation. This is the site of our in-trench dump: Clarendon and Shawville share one trench site and in all these years we’ve used 8-10 acres, that’s all. Then Bryson and Portage asked to use our site. They've been doing so and they put their garbage into a separate trench on our site, so, it’s one location, two dump sites.” Knowing that MoP has a recycling initiative, but being unclear on other municipalities’ sys- tems, I asked Mayor Lang about this issue.“In Clarendon we don’t have door-to-door like you do (at MoP) but during the summer months in Sand Bay a contractor does do this, picking up garbage and recycling.People responded really well to the recycling: we have bins at our dump and at first the contractor just came by once a month to empty the six cubic yard bins. Now?People really use them: since 2006 the bins have been emptied once a week.” What are the problems with some of the materials people put into the in-trench dump, I asked?“Many farmers use the plastic bale wraps — there’s piles and piles of it and it never breaks down.I’m thinking the incinerator will help with this.I don’t know for sure yet, but 1 think it might. You see, if these were to be recycled, the farmers would have to wash them. They’re so busy, I just can’t see them doing that.” We discussed the issue of emissions and air quality as related to incinerators.Mayor Lang commented, “Many older incinerators seem to run at 1100-1200 degrees but this incinerator, according to what I know from the promoter, bums far hotter, at 3000 degrees so there are far fewer emissions. But, we haven’t got all the research or testing done.” We agree that the jury’s out on incineration until this key issue regarding toxins and particulate matter in emissions is clarified.Next question was regarding the capacity of the incinerator: how much garbage will it take, daily?Said Mayor Lang, “We think we can get 40 tonnes per day of garbage from our combined communities. The burn is a 24-hour-a-day process: it has to be continuous to work effectively.Apparently the stats tell us that every person in MRC Pontiac and MoP produces around two ?to three pounds of garbage per day, that’s including recyclables and garbage. So we’re told that the 40 tonnes-per-day for the incinerator is workable for us.“Now, other communities like Maniwaki, who don’t have a solution to their garbage issues, are interested in us, too.The population there is oh, probably about 1,400-1,600 people.(Editor’s note: The population of Maniwaki according to the 2006 Census is 4,100.WM) It 11 be less costly for them to transport garbage here than to Lachute. It makes more sense.” I raise my concern about regional dumps: if we keep on accepting other people’s garbage, where will it end?Is it possible this incinerator, if built, may become a solution for Gatineau’s garbage?“Well, I can’t say it ‘never’ would. However, keep in mind the goal so far is to get an incinerator up and running with either low or no pollution in the emissions.Down the road, if more municipalities are open to it, we may be interested.I don't know. We've been told that if this happens, we would just keep adding burners.Incinerators allow for a far cleaner pre-sorta-tion and treatment of garbage than do open pits as we currently have.Says Mayor Lang, “Everything is out of sight.A truck literally drives into a building and a door closes behind it.Then the truck dumps the garbage. It is shredded and stored dry before being put into the burner. Therefore, there are no unsightly piles: nothing is seen from the exterior.” Regarding the emissions, he said, “The hotter the burner, the less emissions - that’s my understanding.I know a bit about it because of working in the Smurfit mill, working with the boilers there.I expect this burner would catch and contain the particulates in the gases. What’s left?Only two per cent of one tonne of garbage is left.It becomes glass and this could perhaps be sold to CampbelT’s Bay Ciment works or used for the asphalt process for roads." What about the concern over the volume of trucks, I asked him?“Well if you figure it out, 40 tonnes a day is equal to one tractor trailer load. They' can draw between 40-60 tonnes.Even if you look at what the promoter would ideally like to get, 100 tonnes of garbage a day, that only means two trucks. So this notion of twenty trucks a day coming to the site is just not right,” claimed Mayor Lang.“Of course,” he qualified, “We’re all still waiting for the Minister to make a decision about Danford Lake.” ' Mayor Lang is referring to the possible construction of a regional landfill at Danford Lake, which has been opposed by some citizens. On Sept.27, 2007, Quebec’s Bureau des audiences publics sur l’environnement (BAPE) advised against the project being built there. However, Quebec’s Minister of the Environment still may overturn the BAPE’s recommendation.Says Mayor Lang, “I called the Minister the other day and we’re expecting her to make a pronouncement ‘soon’.” He sighs.Personally, I hope the Minister upholds the BAPE’s decision.Time will tell. And, time and research, and public discussion as well as meetings with the incinerator’s promoter will give us all much to think about regarding incineration.Myself?I am far more interested in a localized garbage facility which can produce energy from our own waste, which can be used in our own communities or possibly sold back to Hydro Quebec’s grid.Garbage: we produce it.It’s up to us to deal with it in an environmentally responsible manner. The status quo isn’t good enough: we’re all just fortunate that, insofar as we are aware, we haven't had a health or environmental crisis on our hands thanks to these illegal in-trench dumps. The leachates alone are an immense concern. So, let’s work together, all of us, to understand this process as best we can, and make a homegrown decision that will enable us to deal with the waste we all produce.Katharine Fletcher is a freelance writer based north of Quyon, Quebec Her latest book is Capital Rambles: Exploring the National Capital Region - find this and her other guides at regional bookstores or at MEC YOUR OPINION Fix railroad crossings Dear Editor, Open letter to James Allen, President, Ottawa Central Railway, Mr.Allen, the purpose of this letter is not to prejudge liability in the case of the accident on Heath Road crossing recently. It is intended to help reduce the probability of further accidents which might be prèvented by the introduction of certain practices, that is (a) the clearance of visual obstructions at crossings; (b) the installation of signs for engineers to indicate the right place to blow a horn; and (c) the enforcement of horn discipline among railway employees.I have used the crossings in Bristol and Clarendon regularly over 20 years.I have had a half dozen close calls in that time, not through negligence on my part, but to poor visibility at certain crossings, and belated train horn warning. In one case at Norway Bay, I was so concerned with late horns, that 1 edged my car near the crossing to see if I would get a horn, but it didn’t come.I have good hearing, and don’t play a loud radio, so I can hear a train horn from a distance. On the other hand, I have heard many horns too close to the crossings. In your interview with The Equity, you are quoted as saying, “The engineer saw the ATV, then blew the whistle.” Shouldn’t the whistle come first?« An eastbound train at Heath Road is totally invisible because of the cut 100 yards west, and the high brush growing on the cut.I had a close call on this one, in spite of having stopped and peered around the corner. On the other hand visibility for a westbound train is good, which applies in this case. However, a late horn in the ear of a driver with manual transmission will often cause a stall because of the spasmodic reaction resulting.May I ask that the following practices be implemented, again without suggesting fault in this case: An employee of the railway should check all level crossings for visual obstructions caused by brush and weeds; Engineers be advised that that the horn should blow at a proper distance from the crossing; The management should install signs for the engineers if they don’t exist.Thank you.Paul Hinch Norway Bay Do not segregate St.Jude’s residents Dear Editor, It appears that all was well in our small community for the last 10 years or so that these homes of St.Judes existed in Campbell’s Bay.All of a sudden we have a resident that has been away from our town and has returned to take up residency and is now having people concerned and suggest that these homes should not be near his place and should only be altogether in one part of town.(This was mentioned to me by his phone call) To me this is segregation that existed 100 years ago or so.Unfortunately I did not get to read the issue that Mr.Stafford wrote so therefore 1 cannot comment on his letter. As for the letter by Maureen Gagnon, where she states that the concern is only about the homes and not the people, I beg to differ. There has been talk about the people that are living in these homes and how they could be a threat to our community. Are we not all created equal?Yes, some of us are fortunate not to have disabilities like some of these people have and problems that they must live with from day to day, but that does not make them any less a person because they look different. The letter also states that they should get involved with the people in our town. Some of them do go to the stores, they also contribute by buying their medical drugs at our pharmacy, buy their groceries and also make visits to the dentist like all the rest of us do.As far as getting involved socially, they like to mind their own business and not bother anyone, therefore not giving anyone any room to criticize them that they are disturbing our town. Also has anyone ever ask them to get involved?I believe they are much more afraid of you than you appear to be of them. Also the comment about opening their homes up to the public to go in to their private lives, why should they have to be publicly on display anymore than any of the other homes that you and I live in.The residents pay rent to live in these homes, so therefore are you saying that anyone renting a home in Campbell’s Bay, that we, the residents, should be able to go and view their homes.I think not, this should be of no concern to you or I.Another issue in the letter mentioned the appearances of the outside of these homes with plastic coverings. What about yards that leave their plastic winter garages up and we must look at them over the summer when they are not required? If we want to be concerned about other people’s lives regarding their living quarters, outside appearances of these homes, I suggest that people living in glass houses should not throw stones. As for manning kettles in shopping areas, what is the problem with this?Salvation Army solicits in this way and those that give are not pressured into doing so.After all these people do not get government grants and solely operate with funds received from the rent of these people for their daily care and well being. If they feel that this is another means of helping them meet their needs why is it bothering anyone? It surely doesn’t bother me and should it bother you?I believe that personally speaking about all of the above comments I have made I believe that Campbell’s Bay does not have any problems with these people nor do these people cause any problems.I have never yet to see a police officer at their doors because of a disturbance. And the people mind their own business. Also they don’t understand why all of a sudden they are being attacked.I am appalled to think that in this day and age we have people who would cause problems in our community over a home not quite up to par, or because the home is across from them.Yes it was mentioned to me that it depreciated people’s homes.Well, I must say that we should not condemn these homes as there are others in town that may not be up to standards as well.Maybe we all cannot afford homes that we wish we could have.We live within our means. If these people of St.Jude’s are not happy with their living quarters that some people are concerned about, it is not up to us to stick our noses into other people’s business. We have organizations that this matter should be addressed to that will investigate should at any time one of these people feel the need to present a case.We need to get on with our lives and let the living live in harmony. If some people feel that they have such free time to idle talk and write about these things they do not have much to do and are very narrow minded.Just because it is a home that houses more than one person some people say it is a group home. What about people that take in renters and also families that have been remarried and have children from both marriages, would that make it a group home? What about families that take in foster children they are not of one name, so therefore should that be considered a group home?Let’s all play on a level playing field, and keep peace. We have enough wars going on in the world than to create an uproar with our neighbours that is not necessary. These comments and opinion do not reflect in anyway those of the council. These are my own comments and are made without prejudice.Lois Smith Campbell’s Bay Bilinguisme Ontarien Cher éditeur, Je vous dirai tout d’abord que j’apprécie que vous ayez publié mon document intitulé ‘Bilinguisme groaning earlier in the summer, it’s finally happening. The Pontiac is enjoying road construction season. For the first time in my life I have been excited, overjoyed even, to see road construction ahead. With those bright speed signs and big orange and black cones along the edge of the road.I never knew fluorescent orange could bring me such joy.Sure it means delays and waiting in line and driving slowly over the unfinished work, but when it’s all said and done, the result is so smooth it makes driving in the Pontiac a pleasure.I actually look forward to the trek up past Campbell’s Bay now.And they’re not even done yet.Ill be equally excited when the stretch between Shawville and Bristol is silky smooth.I am sorry to see that they haven’t started
