Equity Reporter SHAWVILLE August 25, 2010 This year's Shawville Fair offers many exciting thrills.Numerous attractions give fair-goers a chance to pick and choose whatever event suits their fancy. For five days the Pontiac Agricultural Society watch all of the activities that they have been working hard on throughout the year come to life. Here is a sample of what to expiect: Pontiac Firemen’* Challenge The Pontiac Firemen’s challenge takes place on Mon., Sept.6 at 11 a.m.The challenge consists of an obstacle course that the firemen have to complete.Firemen from all of the municipalities in Pontiac are invited.Firemen must climb a long flight of stairs while carrying heavy weights to simulate carrying a pierson.“It’s all related to what you would come up against in a fire," said Rick Younge, the president of the Shawville Fair.Horae pull The popular horse pull is happening on Sun., Sept.5 at noon.Teams of two horses in heavy and light classes pull a stone boat filled with weights to see which team can pull the most weight the farthest.Horses have to go 10 feet to qualify.Once they go 10 feet, they start again with more weight added to the boat. They keep going until the last team can still pull the weight.Equity photo The horse pull is always a popular event at the Shawville Fair.Demolition derby The demolition derby is always a crowd pleaser This year it takes place on the last day of the fair, Mon , Sept 6 at 1 p.m , nght after the firemen’s challenge.Cars that are the same size and weight go head to head to see who wans.“Basically they go against each other and smash each other into smithereens," said Younge.Younge said safety is the number one priority so there are certain rules they must follow.Drivers can’t hit other cars on the driver’s door and they have to hit other cars with the front or back of their own cars.‘You can’t try to hurt other drivers," said Younge.“The firemen are very involved. They are standing very close-by in case there is a fire." The cars look like regular cars but are modified to be able to handle the pressure of getting smashed over and over again. For example, there is no glass in the windows, the doors are stuck shut and the gas tank is in a spot where it’s easy to extinguish if it catches on fire. The last car that can keep moving wins the competition Once a car stops, it has one chance to start moving again. If the car can't move, it is eliminated from the competition.Anyone is allowed to compete in the competition and there is prize money for the winners.Team penning Team penning takes place on Sun., Sept.5 at 6 p.m.There are three "penners" on horseback who must sort out three cows from a herd of 21 Whoever can do it the fastest wins. All of the cattle are marked with numbers Penners are told which numbers they must catch and then it’s up to them to weed out the nght cattle and herd them into a pen If the penners get a wrong cow in the pen, they are disqualified. There is a club that puts these shows on.They do a circuit dunng the summer and will compete six or seven times.Antique Vehicle Show The antique vehicle show is happening on Mon , Sept.6 at 11 a m.People display their antique cars and trucks for fair-goers.This is the 5th year the show has taken place."It’s very interesting to see what car your great, great, great grandfather drove," said Younge People are welcome to talk to the car owners and ask questions about the history of the cars Any antique car is welcome to enter the competition The car show is judged bv the participants themselves.“They know more about each other than you or I or anyone else would,’ said Younge.‘So we like to let them vote." Last year there were about 25 cars that took part, but Younge said that every year more and more people participate.Pet show The ever popular pet show happens Sat., Sept.4 at 12;30 p.m.The pet show is open to anybody but it is geared towards children.Anyone is welcome to enter their pet in the competition. It is mostly dogs and cats that enter the show but all types of animals are allowed to enter. There are different categories for the dog competition such as best dressed dog and handler, the oldest dog, best trick, longest nose and longest ears.Categories in the cat competition are best dressed, fluffiest cat, most unique markings, most beautiful eyes, longest ears, most relaxed cat and most unique pet There is another category for every other animal that isn't a dog or cat.Truck and tractor pull The truck and tractor pull has been taking place for the past 25 years or so and this year it is on Thurs., Sept.2 at 7 p.m.Trucks and tractors are hooked up to a stone boat and pull cement weights up and down a 150 foot long track.Whichever truck or tractor can pull the most weight the fastest wins There are seven different categories for the truck and tractor pull They are: 1. 6500 single engine U8 modified 2. 7500 pound pro stock 3. Modified truck 4 Half ton street truck 5. Three quarter ton gas street truck 6. Three quarter ton diesel street truck 7. Farm stock tractors per class Jim Crawford, the director of the tractor pull said the half ton street class and three quarter ton street class are the most popular events.“When classes four and five are going on, the audi ence really gets howling," said Crawford “The half ton and three quarter ton were definitely the biggest classes. They could have anywhere between 15 to 20 or 10 to 15 trucks competing." There is usually about 50 or 60 vehicles completing in the truck and tractor pulls Modified trucks also com piete."It’s more than just trucks and tractors that complete.Modified trucks are altered to have bigger tires, motor suspension and more,” said Crawford.66 Sometimes neighbours compete against neighbours.I —Jim Crawford Tractor pull director _______________________55 Any truck can complete and pieople don't have to pre-register to enter the competition. There are money prizes for whoever pulls the most weight ‘Sometimes neighbours compete against neighbours," said Crawford."Often times pieople com pete against people they know.” When the trucks and tractors begin pulling the boats, the weight is at the back of the sled. The farther down the track they go, the farther up the weights go."It gets harder and harder as they go along," said Crawford.Crawford said it is a lot of work getting ready for the fair but he has a team of great volunteers who help him out Since this is the third year he has been director, it is easier for him now because he has gotten the hang of things “The first one was proba bly the worst. But I know what I need to do now," he laughed "It’s my third year and it’s going good .* Crawford was on the fair board and they were looking for a director for the truck and tractor pull and he said he would help out.He has always been really interest ed in trucks, tractors and race cars, so it was a perfect fit He is looking forward to this year’s event when trucks and tractors of all shapies and sizes will go head to head in the pull "Anyone can enter. They just show up before it starts, get their vehicle weighed and well find a class for them," said Crawford.Competitors have to sup ply their own hitch for the boat; it has to be a certain type of hitch.Crawford said if anyone wants informa tion, it is a good idea to talk to people who competed last year because they would know best ‘After the pull last year, the next day people said it was a good pull It brings in a good crowd," said Crawford Wishing Shawville Fair continued success SHAWVILLE August 25, 2010 As a little boy, Mick Armitage can remember moving to Shawville with his family. His father, Dr.Roly Armitage was a veterinarian with strong ties to the farm ing community, as the man people called when something went wrong with one of their animals Mick Armitage It’s not surprising that the Armitage family would attend one of the area's biggest events of the year, which allow hard working farmers to mingle, and children to enjoy a few games and the midway. That event was of course, the Shawville Fair.Mick Armitage was a toddler the first time he attended.“1 have been going to the Al Tambay Shawville Fair since 1952," he said over the telephor e.The exhibition has experienced considerable change over the years, some of which Armitage has been able to witness and be a part of, first as a young boy showing his pony, today as a musician taking the main stage. The drummer and name behmd the Mick Armitage Band will be playing for the fourth time on the main stage at the fair on Sunday with another local talent, Adrienne Taylor Armitage s musical career is intertwined with the fair; it was in the Agriculture Hall where he played his first set of drums."I was about 16 and Billy Black got me to play," said the musician about the role Black played in developing his musical career. The fair isn’t the only thing that has changed over the years According to the musician, the recording industry has expenenced its share of advancements."Honest to God, we started off with cassettes and now I'm on YouTube,’ he laughed But, admitted the musician, change comes from demand.‘Things always develop from what people want and Shawville Fair has progressed right along with whatever people want. They always had a great agricul ture end of it, but as far as the midway and entertainment, I mean, look at it now.’ Headliners this year include Paul Brandt, Crystal Shawanda and April Wine, the fair continues to attract Grant Tomkinson accomplished performers.Mick Armitage may comprise two thirds of the band's name, but when he gets up on stage hell be accompanied by band mates, Al Tambay, Grant Tomkinson, Bruce Baker and Reverend Al Bragg, who isn't actually a reverend at all, said Armitage.“We like to tell people that he thinks he’s a reverend,’ laughed Armitage about his Rev.Al Bragg fellow musician, who is also a member of the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame.Armitage is able to recall several memorable moments over the years. One memory in the late 1960s is as vivid for him as the more recent visit from Stompin' Tom According to Armitage, he can remember being a young man when 12 sheep escaped from their pens and were wreaking havoc at the fair."I'm talking 10 p.m at night, when it was a smaller fair, and they came straight down Imagine trying to catch a sheep," he laughed Armitage and his band have played at various fairs and in places like Mexico and Ireland, but at the end of the day he says Shawville Fair continues to be the best ‘Shawville Fair is the number one fair where everyone wants to play, and everyone wants to go." It’s the affordability, setting and agriculture that make it so attractive, he said. There s no guessing, it s always perfect.I'm very proud to play at the Shawville Fair, to tell you the truth," he added. The sense of pride he feels in the fair he grew up frequenting expands when people tell him they plan on attending.‘I have fnends in Ottawa and they don't know anybody up there, they don’t have cottages, but they just go to the fair." The Armitage family Bruce Baker moved from the area in 1970, but Mick still owns property in Clarendon, returning to his hometown every Labour Day weekend. When he isn’t, people can find him in one of three places: checking out the horses, grabbing a burger from the 4-H booth (’Oh my God it's good’), or performing with the band in the beer tent (where he’ll be Saturday and Sunday night). The drummer said when it's time to play, they like songs that are “tried and true.’ One such song the band is always sure to include when in Shawville is Trooper's, I’m Here for a Good Time. When an unsawy journalist mentions they’ve never heard of it, Armitage is quick to offer a sample, launching into song. After singing a few words of the tune, he concludes on a laugh, “It s a dandy song." DcMi Moor» Adrienne Taylor will be performing on the main stage with the Mick Armitage Band late Sunday afternoon.Proud to be part of Pontiac Special Section 2010 Shawville Fair Rock band April Wine headlines this years Shawville Fair for first time ANDREA CRANFIELD Equity Reporter SHAWVILLE August 25, 2010 The world renowned rock band April Wine is headlining the Shawville Fair on Sept 3 The Shawville Fair is known for booking country artisrs but Brian Greenwav, a militarist in April Wine thinks it will be a great expe-¦ lencr April Wine formed in ' »f>y and Greenway joined the band in 1977.Greenway is from Hawkesbury, ON, located on the Ottawa River near the Quebec-Ontario border, about a two hour drive from Shawville Although the band has never played in Shawville before, he is no stranger to the area.Greenway joked that sometimes it can be a real pain in the butt playing near home because everybody wants free tickets.“It's gong to be neat.I’ll be home for Labour Day weekend, it’s right across the Hudson River. It’s nice to get to play in my hometown which I don’t get to do '’try often because I’m always away,’ said Greenway.Greenway used to spend a lot of summers near the YMCA close to Shawville. The band recorded some music near Thorne heights many years back. When The Equity spoke to Greenway, he was in Hawkesbury, enjoying a rare home visit. He said although he was only going to be home for 48 hours, it was a real treat. Two days later he was flying to Colorado with the rest of the band to play a show. After a two show stop in Colorado, the band was going to Texas before heading back home. After a few days off.they were heading to Pickering, ON, Malone, NY and then Vallyfield, QC.April Wine has been almost constantly on the road since April.“We get a lot of air miles,” Greenway said.“We play about 70 shows a year.Of course you have to multiply each concert day by two and sometimes three for travel days,” he said. The band is playing in Slave Lake.AB before making their way to Shawville. They head back to Alberta after the Shawville Fair to play a show in Fort McMurray. They just don’t seem to get many breaks from touring but Greenway said that although being on the road can be difficult, he loves his job and there’s nothing else he’d rather be doing.“It’s not so bad.Hotels have gotten better. In regards to food, you're your own boss. The hard part is airports with security and delays,” he said.Of course, there are the funny stones that happen when being on tour constantly.Just last week April Wine was playing a show in Iowa and Greenway's guitar never made it to the show.It never even made it on the plane. He had to play with someone else's guitar, which Greenway said wasn't bad but he didn’t receive his guitar back until about a week later. He was thankful to have it back safe and sound.Greenway said it's rare that stuff like that happens; most of the time everything runs smoothly. One of Greenway's favourite places to play live is Vancouver, BC, because he enjoys the scenery and the people. He also enjoys Halifax because he likes being near the water and mountains Another favourite spot he has encountered on his travels is San Antonio, Texas."I love playing in San Antonio. The River Walk is marvelous,” Greenway said.“I don’t like big cities that much I like to have green around me and quiet 1 don’t want to constantly be hearing sirens and horns.” April Wine was going to be headed over to San Antonio within a few days of the interview 'An ording to my computer.we’re going to be in San Antonio for 21 hours, that’s it." he laughed Greenway said the trick with live shows is not overdoing it in any one place.“If they don’t see vou a lot they say Hey we want to see them’, if they see you all the time they think Ok whatever, nothing new,” he said. When he’s on the road, he has a trick he remembers to help him through difficult times He just remembers that things will eventually change and get better At one point last week he said That’s it, I’m fed up, I’m quitting, I've had enough ’ “But I love what I do.You just have to wait a bit and things will get better If you don’t like where you are, wait a bit.It will get better You just have to think An so many hours, I will be somewhere different’, so if you don’t like where you are, you aren’t going to be there forever, it will change the next day,” Greenway explained.Greenway said that every job has its rough spots so when things get tough, he puts up with it.Besides, the good far outweighs the bad in his career.Although the band members don’t hang out with each other outside of job related events, Greenway said they get along great. It makes being on the road a lot easier when surrounded by good people.“We have a good time. It’s what you make of it, it’s like anything,” said Greenway.“There are good days and there are bad days. But that’s like any other job.Sometimes you think you just want to quit but you just have to remember that things do get better,” he pointed out.Greenway said that playing music is all he’s ever done.If he wasn’t a musician, he said he’d have to go back to school to learn to do something else But he remembers choosing his path back when he was in school.“I chose my ways.I hated school and I loved music so much,” he said He started playing guitar when he was eight or nine years old.He decided to play just because he loved music so much so he wanted to learn to play.“Everybody was playing guitar and I had a flare for it.I was listening to The Beatles and Rolling Stones and I really wanted to learn guitar.I’m the only that still plays out of my friends though,” Greenway said.“They are all doctors or lawyers now.” He began getting really good at guitar and started to make some money doing it.Soon enough it became not only a hobby for Greenway, but also a job “If you can do something in life you love doing then you’re lucky. But you have to support your family. There’s been lean years and there’s been good years,” he said.Greenway recognizes that part of being successful in the music industry is luck He knew all the members of April Wine and was in a couple of bands over the years with Steve Lang, the once bassist of April Wine.‘Getting into April Wine in 1977 was a big break for me They were looking for a fifth guitar player and 1 knew them.I was there so it just sort of happened," said Greenway.“I fit in.I happened to be there and that was lucky, like winning the lottery is lucky.” He said another big break was when the song Sign of the Gypsy Queen came out in 1981 which started April Wine on the road to popularity He finds the hardest part about being a successful musician is just being able to do it.He recognizes that there are a lot of singers and guitar players with more talent than he has that will never make it in the music industry.“You have to have talent and luck,” he said.“But if you love what you do and you are lucky enough to be able to make money at it, then you have it pretty good.” Greenwav still gets a thrill from being on stage He said putting on live shows for the fans is what it’s all about and it never stops being fun and exciting. After all these years, he still gets nervous before playing every show “I always get nervous If Submitted by April Wine April Wine has entertained hundreds of crowds over the years. This is their first time playing at the Shawville Fair.you don’t, you’ve lost it.It shows you’re still interested in putting on a great show,” he said.“The fans are the people that support us over all these years, all these places we go.We have to play with a truthful eagerness You give to them and they give back to you " Every show is different and sometimes the audience shows their appreciation and love for the band and sometimes they don’t even bother to applaud.“Sometimes you want to ask ‘Have you heard of us before?” laughs Greenway.“There are tricks to getting an audience going but if they just don’t want to have fun, then nothing's going to work.” Playing big cities versus small towns is different because small towns can often be more appreciative.Big cities auch as Toronto or New York are used to big names coming through town so Greenway said they often expect big things.“They want you to impress them Small towns sometimes too, but big cities say Impress me,” said Greenway.Greenway’s favourite show that he ever played was in Toronto; he can’t remember if it was at the Guvernment or the Docks Nightclub, (now the Sound Academy). He hadn’t been to town in a long time and really enjoyed being back.“The people there were really cool, it was one of those things you didn't want to end,” said Green way Another favourite was in 1982 in Germany when April Wine played an outdoor show with Neil Young, Jethro Tull and King Crimson.“There were 150,000 people in the audience. It was a sea of shirts that went on forever,” he said.Of all the places Green way would like to see he would choose Russia. He’s never been before and thinks it would be interesting. He would also like to see Australia and Japan but is hesitant because the flights would be too long, about 22 hours.“The longest I've been on an airplane is nine hours I watch a couple movies, take a nap, have dinner and I'm there,” he said.“Twenty two hours is a long flight.” April Wine has been nominated for 11 Juno awards in their lifetime and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in St.John’s, Nfld.Greenway and lead singer Myles Goodwyn accepted the award.Greenway said it was one of the band’s biggest accomplishments.“That was really neat.We were never in the Juno presentations before. We were nominated 11 times so I think finally they said “We better give them something.” He joked.“It was a really nice place to be It was a recognition factor by our peers. It was an honour.” Greenway and Goodwyn actually got stuck in Newfoundland on the way to the Juno Awards because of the volcanic fog floating over from the volcano that had erupted in Iceland.“I've been fogged in, snowed in, rained in but never ashed in before,” laughed Greenway.“But we made it.” Goodwyn writes all the songs He is the only original member still in the band.“He puts in a song and we put parts on it.Songs like Say Hello sounded nothing like they did in rehearsal, it really developed in the studio,” said Greenway. The band plays around with songs in the studio until they come together.Whole parts of the song might change upon entering the recording studio.Sometimes the band disagrees about how the song should sound, but Greenway said he just has to live with the final result.April Wine may be recording some more music called the Vile Series in the fall, but there are no definite plans.“April Wine has never been a band to get things out in a hurry,” Greenway joked. When asked where Greenway sees himself in the next five years he said he plans to keep playing until there is no audience anymore.“Retire from what?” he asked."Unless you’re physically unable to do it, or don't want to do it, I don't see myself stopping.” KIP© SBAVY September/Septembre 2-6, 2010 THURSDAY /JEUDI Gates opan/Ouvarture da I'expo Al exhibits open/Ou vertu re de tous las objets exposés Truck puH/Tke de camion Tractor
