Monseigneur Melançon, Bishop of Chicoutimi; His Worship G H.Smith.Mayor of Chicoutimi; Mr.Antonio Talbot, Provincial Deputy; Brigadier G.P.Vanier; Group Captain Parker and the officers accompanying the Governor-General.It was during this reception that the Governor-General personally handed to Mr.R.E.Powell his commission as Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of Le Regiment du Saguenay, upon the request of Lieutenant-Colonel J.A.W.LaBelle who explained: "Last year the Officers of Le Regiment du Saguenay, realizing the great interest shown by the President of the Aluminum Company of Canada, Ltd., in the welfare and development of the Saguenay region and wishing to express their appreciation thereof, recommended the appointment of Mr.R.E.Powell as the Honorary An His Excellency passed through the ranks at C hicoutimi, he stopped to chat w ith the soldiers, displaying appreciation of their neatness and bearing.Lieutenant-Colonel of their unit.His Excellency praised the Regiment and its new honorary colonel and, the ceremony over, the group returned to Arvida.During the inspection of the Arvida Defences, as well as at the Chicoutimi Training Centre and at the présenta tion at the Mess of Le Regiment du Saguenay, the music was furnished by the band of Le Regiment du Saguenay under the able direction of Bandmaster J.W.Body and was greatly appreciated by the Vice-Regal party as well as by ail the spectators.There were many fine compliments about it.Visits The Saguenay Inn Even before taking some rest, the Governor-General made a thorough visit of I he Saguenay Inn, admired if' essentially French Canadian decoration, French Canadian homespun curtains and other examples of handicraft.A few minutes later, the Earl and his escort returned to the Arvida railway station where, in presence of an enthusiastic crowd, the Governor-General took leave of his hosts, saying once more how important was the production of aluminum in the war effort.His Excellency expressed regret that he was unable to spend another day to see Port Alfred, Chute-a-Caron and Isle Maligne but promised to come back.It was amidst the ovation of the largest crowd ever seen at Arvida station that the Vice-Regal train departed at five minutes to eight for Quebec, taking with it the distinguished silhouette of the Earl of Athlone, Governor-General of Canada, as he waved gcxid-bye from the rear platform of his train.His visit will long remain in the memory of the men and women of Arvida and Shipshaw because it gave to their work an official acknowledgment and brought sincere congratulations from a satisfied chiet Scultuelle, October 2nd, 1^-tJ I .it Message from the Governor-General to the workers at Arvida and Shipshaw, 16th September, 1942 wT AM delighted to be here to-day, and I am most grateful to the Aluminum Company of Canada for inviting me to visit Arvida and Shipshaw.In the course of my journeys in Canada, I have had an opportunity of seeing many of the great industrial achievements which constitute what we call Canada s contribution to the war effort ’.I hey are tremendously impressive, and they are something of which all Canadians will, I am sure, feel justifiably proud when Canada’s war effort is placed on record.I am convinced, however, that none of them is of greater importance than yours, because so many other industries and war supplies depend on the continuous production of aluminum.I ‘ you take a rough survey of the course of the war, I think you will find that the skies are brighter than they were a few months ago.The Battle of Midway was a resounding success for the United States Forces.In Egypt, Rommel’s armies of Libya have been Au cours de la journée, à Chicoutimi, Son Excellence présenta à M R.E.Powell une commission de lieutenant-colonel honoraire dans le Régiment du Saguenay.Ci-de s sut, de gauche à droite—le capitaine de groupe Parker;
