Instead of turning grand old institutions into musty museums, useful new functions can be found for them. The Domaine St-Laurent is not a depository of relics but a lesson in the progress of history. The St-Laurents are doing the renovations with taste, turning King's Hall into a great country inn for its new guests as well as its old.TV program shows Arabian nightmare By NELLY YOUNG In fairytales a princess never dies.Even when her fate is doomed by a wicked stepmother, one kiss from Prince Charming brings her back to life. But real life is another matter. It's no news to anyone that we are not living in a fairytale. And if one area on this small planet is becoming increasingly associated wuth the destruction of our ability to dream, it's the Arab world.Once "Tales of the Arabian Nights" held us spellbound with exotic stories about little boys and genies, flying carpets and other wondrous concoctions of the imagination. Now some of the true-life tales emerging from those strange Islamic lands are assuming the horrific fascination of an Arabian nightmare. One such story, "death of a Princess", will be dramatized Monday, May 12 on Vermont’s ETV network.Despite strong pressure from the Saudi Arabian government to suppress its telecast with threats of a break in trade relations and a rumoured bribe of 5 million pounds, both Britain and Holland went ahead and showed the documentary.Humble apologies from Britain's foreign secretary, Lord Carrington, have not erased the possibility of losing some 900 million pounds in trade as a consequence. Now it's America’s turn to lift the veils on this well-kept secret Long before the hostage affair in Iran, a fatal love story captured world attention. So powerful was Saudi Arabian royalty that it took six months just for news of the public double execution to surface Gossip at diplomatic cocktail parties finally filtered through to the press.Reuters and Britain's “The Observer" carried the sketchy details.Princess Misha’al, one of 2000 princesses belonging to the House of Saud, had fallen for the cousin of the Saudi's ambassador to Beirut while she was studying in Lebanon.A former general ambassador, Ali Shaar had been influential as Riyadh's proconsul in the Arab pact which brought the Lebanese civil war to an end.Nonetheless, he and his relations were not considered of high enough stock to mix with royalty. The 23-year-old princess was called home and her marriage to someone her father's age arranged, defying family constraints, she eloped with the younger shaar. In cloak and dagger fashion they were apparently married by a sheik and an excape out of Saudi Arabia was devised, despite a travel ban imposed to prevent such a plot. But tight security won out. Both the princess and her lover were arrested on a royal warrant as they prepared to board a plane. On the following Friday at noon, in a public bazaar in Jedda, the traditional time and place tor such punishment.they were summarily executed by palace guards, She was apparently shot, he, decapitated.Other princesses were summoned to witness the gruesome spectacle lest they persist in the pursuit of hedonistic pleasures.Conflicting versions of the crime - and punishment - still abound, although the two- hour dramatization should clear up some of the contentious points. It is, however, known that Princess Misha'al’s fate was sealed by her grandfather, Prince Muhammad, the oldest surviving son of the founder of Saudi Arabia and a staunch traditionalist. His .-nickname.Mauhammed of the Twin Evils, alludes to his choleric temperament and drinking problem, which kept him from the throne but not from a position of power. His brother.King Khaled.would not sign an order of execution. It would seem that Princess Misha al’s crime was not so much in loving a commoner as in making it public. This is also the crime which the film commits. The depiction in “Death of a Princess" of Saudi women actively on the lookout for sexual adventure outside the restrictive and repressive boundaries of their own country is one of the main reasons for the magnitude of royal displeasure.Another is the bad light shed on the monarchy with its hypocritical espousal of Islamic ascetism at home and notorious licentiousness abroad Filmmaker Antony Thomas became intrigued after hearing an account of these events from a source apparently very close to the royal family and an important influence behind the throne.“Death of a Princess" is the story of a search that took Thomas through London, Paris, Cairo, Beirut and Arabia into what he calls the “private centre" of the Arab world. It was a dangerous mission both for himself, his crew and the many sources - journalists, officials, witnesses and friends of the royal family -who were willing to secretly confide in him Their revelations were not confined to the Princess's case but touched on their own experience and that of family relations as well.To protect their identity, actors are used in the movie.“Death of a Princess” can be seen on Channel 33 ( or cable equivalents) Monday, May 12 at 20:00.The Mock Elizabethan style is well suited to a country inn. Here the common room has been turned into a lounge.% ' ' • ¦à*.*-: mmuŒOME i in qfijf Ml m ï IL mimzmntrm Location : 60 milas east of Montreal, Exit 90 from tha Eastern Townahlp» Autoroute (Route 10], then Route 243 south for four miles to Brome Lake.MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL, SUNDAY THE 11th OF MAY MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL, SUNDAY MAY 11th Brunch served from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.— $7.50 Smorgasbord served from 6 p.m.-l 0 p.m.— $14.75 Children half price: 12 and under SPECIAL SURPRISE FOR THE LADIES We are, of course, open 7 days a week. With daily lunch and dinner specials, or you can choose from our à la carte menu.On weekends we serve the Smorgasbord Saturday night: with Roast Prime Rib of Beef Sunday night: with Roast Brome Lake Duckling Your hosts: Irene and Preben Mohr 400 Lakeside Rd., Foster, Qué., JOE IRQ Tel.1 [514] 243-5755 4: TOWNSHIPS WEEK -FRI ., MAY 9, 1980 Tyson’s new album has a feeling of excitement There are times when you want to stop trying To handle the world on your own Hut the times when your spirit is flying Can show how your freedom has grown ¦ ‘Freedom Now' by Sylvia Tyson Sylvia Tyson is often portrayed as “cool, distant and elusive.’’ 1 wonder if those words aren’t chosen because she’s a woman; not projecting the beguiling, girlish affectations expected from the stereotype of female performers.Perhaps it would be more accurate, and certainly just as valid, to describe her as “confident, reserved and private;” not necessarily feeling she has to “charm” people to see things her way.T'm not much of an image person," Tyson says, “I’m not image oriented.I find that limiting, and as a writer, I’d rather present the images in my songs, rather than having the songs present an image of me.” The 39-year-old native of Chatham,a town in southern Ontario, has recently released her fourth solo album (Sugar for Sugar - Salt for Salt; Salt Records; SR-H)2), the second on her own label The promo material with the album says it “represents a considerable measure of change for Sylvia,” but she considers it more progression than change.“With previous albums I worked a lot by myself, gs m Country I music By DAVE MULHOLLAND but on this album I used my own band as the rhythm section, and I had to think more about the (musical) arrangements. The music has a momentum and feeling of excitement that previous albums didn't have." Tyson wrote four of the album's nine songs, co-wrote another and adapted a traditional piece as well. She appears genuinely surprised when I suggest her writing has become more cynical, less optimistic."Well, I'm happy with the material I’m writing.I may be more cynical, but I’m certainly no less optimistic.I think perhaps my lyrics have become a little more gutsy.” Five years ago she and her husband, Ian Tyson, split professionally, but little has been said about the break-up of their marriage three years ago.“One was part and parcel of the other,” she says.“We just found that our interests SYLVIA TYSON can record what she wants to the way she wants to.became different. There was no animosity; it was an amicable separation and we remain good friends.” The Tyson’s 13-year-old son, Clay, lives with his mother in Toronto, and spends summer vacations on his father’s ranch in Alberta.r When Tyson stepped out on her own, she was immediately tagged as a role model for the feminist movement. But her music is an expression of her individuality, and she rejects labels imposed upon her.T’ve been fighting labels all my life.If you allow yourself to be labelled, then people assume they know how you think, and so they don’t really have to listen to what you’re saying.I try to keep people who apply labels off balance by doing something totally out of line." In the fall of 1977, Tyson was dropped by Capitol Records of Canada, because the label’s U S.parent company wasn't interested in her.In the spring of 1978 she formed her own label, Salt Records, and that summer released her third solo album (Satin on Stone; SR-101).“The one truism that is definitely true is that if you want somethingdone right, do it yourself," she says, adding that with her own label she can record what she wants the way she wants to.Tyson is chief administrator of Salt Records, and says that the business side of music should be just as creative as the performance and writing side.As for her priorities: “Clay is certainly my priority, although I find he is now less demanding, because of his age, and, secondly, my music; all aspects of it.” Maxwell’s new novel compact but powerful "So Fong, See You Tomorrow" by William Maxwell (KNOPF-RANDOM HOUSE): *10.50.135 pp.For his first novel in 18 years, distinguished American short story writer William Maxwell has chosen to combine two literary forms.Partly an autobiographical memoir, delivered in the usual first person narrative point of view, "So Long" contains an extended fictional piece within a framework of Maxwell’s reminiscence of his mid-western upbringing in Lincoln, Illinois. The narrator, after giving the customary farewell that forms the title, departs from his adolescent playmate Cletus Smith one evening only to have their fine friendship sundered by a bit of a morality play that is almost medieval in its simple, rural values.Cletus Smith's father becomes a violent murderer, in the elemental menage a trois that involves his wife, and their neighbour Lloyd Wilson, who just happens to be the elder Smith’s best friend.Maxwell shows, in a touching, spare prose style, that the spectre of adultery can show its face in even so innocent a society as this. When Clarence Smith shoots and kills his former bosom companion, Lloyd Wilson, Maxwell makes dramatic use of the event, as he explains how he methodically researched the public information about the case by poring over transcripts of the inquest in local newspapers. It is the day to day lifestyle of the rural people of Illinois, at the dawn of the Roaring Twenties, that becomes the focus for Maxwell’s compact, but powerful little book. The autobiographical form of the book reveals that the narrator presumably Maxwell - has been haunted through his long life ( he was born in 1908, and lives in New York City, where he was editor of The New Yorker for some 40 years) by the tragic shot which brought about an unspoken, but embarrassing schism between him and Cletus Smith. The section of the book which tends to be fictional, is Maxwell’s speculation about how the adultery and subsequent violent deaths of Wilson, and Smith’s suicide would have affected Cletus Smith and his family. While w e have the fiction of Fitzgerald and Hemingway to aid in shaping our mental picture of America in the ’20s, it is w ell to have also this sparely told idyll of the great midwest to cast a different light on the manners of rural America."After The FTrst Death" by Robert Cormier (AVON); *2.25, 223 pp.This psychological thriller abotd a terrorist gambit to win attention for an ambiguously detailed foreign cause by hijacking a busload of six-year-old youngsters tries to do too many things simultaneously The action leading up to the violent confrontation between special forces and the four terrorists is told with enough care to riveting our Kaleidoscope BY RICHARD LONEY interest to the potential horror of the drama - the leader of the ski-masked marauders boldly announcing that a child will be slain if demands are not met, or if any attempt is made to pick off one of the four with sniper shots. But it is the ploy of having the son of one of the generals involved in the bus fiasco tell his story in a confessional sub-plot, which detracts from, rather than augments what is a cleverly written tale of intrigue and sudden brutailty. The tactic of alternating chapters which trace the growing hostility between college student Ben Marchand and his father, a general with a US secret force known only as Inner Delta, does perhaps lend a note of human interest to the trite formula of terrorists, hostages, and rescue operations. But there is enough psychology at work at the young female bus driver attempts to outpsych the baby-faced terrorist known as Miro, as the busload of kids and abductors await the fateful hour of reckoning.Enough of a threat of real violence plays under the surface of the novel to ensure a page-turning workout for most readers. There is a hair-raising climax with expected explosions, tactical force raids and requisite panic, that resolves the tensions created by Cormier’s average attempt at a well-worn genre.“Cottage Country" by Deter F'owler (OXFORD): *12.95 -photographs, with introduction by Gordon Sinclair. The striking colour photographs by Peter Fowler, take in the range of country north of Toronto, beyond Barrie, where Sinclair says “there are three choices: swing left to Georgian Bay and its changeable blue waters; head straight for Muskoka; or swing right to the Highlands of Haliburton” One of Fowler’s choices is the massive summer home of the great Canadian humourist.Stephen Leacock at Brewery Bay, LakeCouchiching, or it could be a general store with a giant coke machine standing guard like a red and white sentinel in Parry Sound, home of the legendary Bobbie Orr.The Muskokas are captured in fall spendour dotted with fallen leaves, or swirling with early morning summer mists at Severn Bridge A spring scene at MacTier, or a winter moonrise over Balsam Lake, are equally caught in Fowler’s lens The beauties of some of Canada’s most picturesque cottage country are recorded in living colour in this famous wedge of lakelands between Georgian Bay to the west, and Lake Ontario to the south OFF THE RECORD Toronto “Lookin for Trouble” (SGR-A&M) Hot off a 45-city Canadian promo junket is the hot sextet named after the city all Canada loves to hate - Toronto is a progressive, hybrid Canuck band with two prominent females aboard - vocalist Holly Woods, and guitarist Sheron Alton.Hybrid in that only guitarist Brian Allen, a Chilliwack, B.C.native, is Canadian born - the other three members hail from that rock mecca of Rochester, New York. The playing shows no national bias, however, as Toronto blends some exciting compositions that tend toward new wavish inspiration, with their highly jazz-oriented backgrounds to come up with an energetic sound. With their blend of Heart and Fleetwood Mac-like numbers, Toronto has chosen a successful niche for this debut album. When Holly Woods is wailing she could well be mistaken for one of the Wilson sisters, which is high praise in this momentary trend in rock with more and more bands incorporating a high profile female presence Jon and Vangelis “Short Stories" (POLYDOR) The Jon is of course Jon Anderson, vocal presence for Yes, and Angelis is the experimental instrumentalist who almost replaced Rick Wakeman as keyboardist for Yes.Together, they comprise a highly innovative duet which skirts the edges of the style of music that brought Yes such prominence in the Seventies.Much of this is Star Wars music - it almost requires the stunning visuals to bring the whooshes and synthesizer trickery to proper perspective. But just as suddenly the stage shifts from Vangelis’s wizardry in electronics to the ballad honesty of Anderson's “Each and Everyday”.Even when Vangelis relinquishes the special effects to a simple acoustic guitar backing for “The Road", Jon Anderson's understated vocal work shines through.Journey “Departure" (COLUMBIA) Journey is quite a versatile pop band, sounding at times much like the currently hot Supertramp and often like bands such as Grand Funk Railroad would have sounded had they learned the pleasing qualities of the human voice entwining in harmonies.Journey has enough L A.flash to make them a hot ticket on teen markets, but they play solid, fundamental rock with enough elan to satisfy the more discerning, mellowed fan.- Basically a guitar band, fronted by a bouncy, ecstatic lead voice in Steve Perry, Journey plays production-number pieces, often uniting in impressive vocal backings that place the band in the same general category as England’s Queen Ripping guitar glissandos.a tight pulsing rhythm section and deft electric piano riffs blend to make this Journey easy to take. TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRI., MAY 9, 198(V 5 ‘Comedy of errors’ in Lennoxville Supershow Commentary ww: ’1 By NELLY YOUNG The Greatest Little Travelling Supershow for Young People comes to Lennoxville instead of Sherbrooke today because of "a comedy of errors '.That's how Linda Gabor-iau, representing the Touring Office of the Canada Council which is responsible for this cross-country cultural event, described it.Originally slated for the Université de Sherbrooke's Centre culturel, where greater space and facilities ensured an attendance of 3,500 French and about half that many English school kids, Supershow risked not being seen at all by young people of the Eastern Townships.Fortunately, the Cultural Awareness Programme coordinated by Ann Mac-Laren got involved and Supershow w as switched to Bishop’s Centennial Theatre and Lennoxville Elementary School. The reason for these difficulties?Quebec City’s Grand Theatre had requested a date change in order to accommodate the stage needs of one of the tour's companies — the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.Trying to be helpful.Ms.Gaboriau took the initiative of contacting Michelle Quintin of Sherbrooke's Commission Scolaire (Educational Services) directly to see if the date change was acceptable without first speaking to Andre Lachance, director of the Centre culturel. That was a big mistake.Michelle Quintin told Ms.Gaboriau that May 7 was possible instead of May 5 if Monsieur Lachance had no objections. But the director did not find the developing “comedy of errors" a laughing matter. In initial negotiations with the school board, he had acted on a request from Ms.Quintin to arrange activities for the schools at the nearby Centre sportif that same day.Ms.Quintin explained to me that a two-hour outing for one-third of the Commission’s total student population, no matter how attractive, was simply unfeasible from an economic and organizational point of view But a full day of combined cultural and sports activities made the mobilization of 3.500 students a worthwhile effort. The date change meant a big organizational and administrative headache for Monsieur Lachance who, in addition to being short-handed, was about to leave on vacation.Apart from feeling obligated to accommodate the Quebec City theatre.Lachance felt Ms.Gaboriau had “gone above our heads, intervening in school affairs" without even knowing of these complicating factors. It had been up to the director and his staff to co-ordinate school participation, not the Touring Office.Yet, all information and materials for the shows were sent directly to the schools, completely bypassing the Centre. It seemed that once facilities and technical personnel had been ensured — and Mr.Lachance emphasized that these were being made available free of charge — the Touring Office of the Canada Council of the Arts was no longer concerned with the Centre culturel.Yet he procrastinated. It wasn't until March 31, about five weeks before Supershow was to take place, that Ms.Gaboriau learned the bad news.Driving out to Sherbrooke for a pre-arranged meeting with the director to work out details, she was informed by Lachance that the Centre culturel had decided to pull out.He did, however, tell me that he had offered to rent the theatre space and provide the technical services at the usual rates. He also got in toucch with Ann MacLaren in case she wanted to take over local organization of Supershow .She had already been working on participation from English language schools through her Cultural Awareness Programme. She agreed And thanks to the Secretary of State-financed program, there would be no charge to students attending any of the scheduled shows.(A small charge would have been made at the Centre culturel to cover the larger operational costs).Perhaps I will be accused of harping on trivial I dti iiva via WH000! ! jr ?! ¥ § 3 j — ® « £ 5 * zn $ >» BUCK AND DOE RESTAURANT LOS ANGELES (AP) — Something to cheer the Circus of Humiliation Manilow and Melissa Manchester used to be jingle singers here, warbling praises of various items — hamburgers, insurance, cars, beer, even salt.Phyllis Hyman, who records for the same label they do, Arista, hopes to be a pop music star, too.She has a new, discoflavored album just out and is on tour, the opening act for the Jays. But while awaiting celebrity status, she, too, is following in the Manilow-Manchester tradition — singing jingles.“Just did a Welch’s Grape Juice yesterday." she said as she bounced into the Arista office, asked about breakfast and disclosed she'd gotten no eats at a celebrity break fast at a radio station here.A tall, lovely, ebullient lady in her late 20s, Miss Hyman, who hails from Pittsburgh, has sung professionally since 1971, when she broke in with a group called The New Directions.Despite the disco in her new album, she isn’t an apprentice Donna Sum- mer.Her act includes soul, r-and-b, standards like Here’s That Rainy Day, and little splashes of jazz and scat-singing.HAS FOLLOWING She has sort of a cult following.Early members of the cult still think of her as a jazz singer, as a few years ago she could be heard at a jazz club called Mikell’s on New York’s Upper West Side.'iSrrTTTT?Tel 565 0366 CARRUDUR de LÏSTRII W-E 12:30-2:15-4 00-5 45-7:30-9 latum Kristy O’Neal McNichol DON’T LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU CBC talent competition launched with He got the role—largely because his father is, indeed, Dick Van Dyke. Some years later when the elder Van Dyke returned to the air with his second series, Barry had a regular role— assistant in charge of transportation and chief errand runner, or gofer. After six months of this, he was given a handsome one-line part.Thereafter he worked as an ex;ra and stand-in and eventually played in the neighborhood of some 40 different parts.' Nothing sensational," he recalls today, "but it was a wonderful experience." After the series had run its course, Barry studied for two more years with veteran drama coach Jeff Corey and began making guest appearances on such leading series as 'Mork and Mindy,' Wonder Woman,' 'Eight is Enough' and The Tony Randall Show.' He also was a regular on the short-lived 'Harvey Korman Show.’ Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Barry spent most of his childhood years in New York while his father starred on Broadway in Boys Against Girls' and ‘Bye Bye Birdie.' Southern California eventually became his permanent home and he attended Birmingham High School and Pierce College, both in the San Fernando Valley just north of Hollywood. He now makes his home in Agoura with his wife of five years, Mary, and their two children.TV COMPUlOG SERVICES INC J Friday EVENING 6:00 0 CE SOIR §00O© NEWS INFORMA BLOC © LE DIX VOUS INFORME © ABC NEWS §ZOOM NBC NEWS O© LES TANNANTS O ABC NEWS © BEWITCHED © OVER EASY Family Sur viva!
