Like The Band (The Last Waltz) whose star qualities were honed by Toronto's Ronny Hawkins, Highstreet, a local group that has made good, owes a lot to Brian. Not only was he a member of the original band but he has also been responsible for developing its membership. In the 60's they called themselves the Highstreet Underground - “practicing in a basement on High Street and all.” They gained a reputation locally in the early 70’s, even making the front page of The Record, then toured the province “playing in every little rathole there was." According to Brian, they “didn't make much money but had a hell of a good time." In '72 the band drifted apart and Brian simply began to drift from place to place, from group to group, always in search of the perfect combo, always in search of a break.Returning from the West in ’73 with John Barry (until a year ago Highstreet’s drummer), he began to talk about forming a new band with Jim Zeller, another Townships boy and considered one of the best harp (harmonica) players in Canada. But Mickey Hall and Desi McKeon with whom he had played before, approached him about the same time and soon the Highstreet Underground was revived.Because of the cooperation and close contact called for in a musical group, personal conflicts are always springing up.Zeller, a bit of an eccentric, was the first to leave and every second month Brian threatened to follow his example. The band was doing alright with roadhouse gigs in the summer and, during the winter, a seasonal the Balsams in New Hampshire. But it wasn't the kind of music Brian wanted to play.More and more, he was getting into the blues while the group was into rock.During a western tour, he finally left.Returning to the Townships, he joined the Penny Carter Band.“That was the best goddamn band around. It could have gone places. We were doing stuff that nobody else was doing and some of Penny’s original stuff was dynamite, really, really good." They had done demos for R.C.A.in Montreal and landed a season at the Balsams. But, despite their musical affinity, a conflict developed between Penny and Brian over leadership and the band broke up at the end of the season.Brian and a few other members of the band, among them Jim Buck and Bruce Coulter who now play for Highstreet, moved to Montreal forming the West-End Band, so called because they practiced in the West-end.They began to develop a reputation in the city.In the summer of '75, they played the Pleasant View Hotel in North Hatley. It was a good but there were always hassles.“If you were in the city, there were so many bands competing that you really had to work at it, take it as a real job.Around here, it was like a party all the time. You’d try to get guys together for a practice and you’d show up at a hotel and there would be a message for you that they'd gone drinking or something." Bu this time Brian was a little older than the others. He couldn’t afford to fool around anymore. This was his career.Figuring that he was going nowhere, he took off for the West in the fall, intending to leave music behind.“But I couldn’t get it out of my blood.” He hopped a plane back, got the band together again and headed west with them. The agents he had talked to made all kinds of promises but nothing materialized.By the time they hit Calgary, they were just about on the skids.“We finally managed to play some taverns.Christ, we were the hottest band in town.Encore, encore, encore.we were packing ’em in everywhere, but we couldn’t get our feet off the ground. We were a little ahead of our time.We didn’t dress fancy or perform, we just played music. But they weren’t ready for it then. Now we’d be okay.” The only good gig was in Edmonton with the legendary Long John Baldry. They would play a set and then Baldry’s band would play one.“He had a guitarist that was better than anything around and two singers that could knock your socks off.But we gave them a run for their money.” Mostly they were at the mercy of small-minded hotel owners who were too stupid to see their potential.Life got tougher, especially for Brian. He got married in the summer of ’76 and was looking forward to having a family of his own.Discouraged, the band broke up that winter. The others either drifted on or hightailed it back home. But Brian had drifted too long.No matter how, he wanted to stand on his own two feet and figured he might as well do it there.Financially he couldn’t leave anyway. He owed about $10,000 to a Calgary music store for equipment. He started working at different jobs and found out pretty fast what he didn’t want to do.In the back of his mind, he had always wanted to have a repair shop.“When I played here, I had to go to Montreal to get my guitar fixed. There was this place called Rufus’.When I saw his shop I said ‘hey, that’s what I want’.But I was quite a big younger then and wasn’t ready to take that step.” At 30, he was.All winter he tinkereed.“My first repair shop was a closet.” In the spring, he walked into the music store where he’d bought his equipment and propositioned its owner. He convinced the businessman that he could no more sell guitars without servicing them than a car dealer can do without a service department. This was just when the guitar customizing craze was taking off, so they hired him on.He built up the shop from nothing, buying equipment and hiring two other guys to help. His reputation grew and soon the other shop in town was out of business. He had everything he needed - a fully equipped shop, job security and he was paying off the mortgage on a house.Everything, that is, except freedom and contentment.Getting a fair return from your labour The Little River Band teams up with orchestra The Little River Band “Backstage Pass” (EMI-CAPITOL) Not since the Procal Harum live recording with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra has a major band teamed up with a classical ensemble with such impeccable results. The Little River Band, as Sold Right Out in native Australia as they are in North America, has a four-sided album - two of (besides are an in-concert session with the Adelaide Symphony. The other two, including some hot new material, were recorded at live venues in Aussie-land and the States. The lush opening to "It’s A Long Way There” demonstrates how well rod; can adapt to the variations supplied Kaleidoscope BY RICHARDLONEY by the Adelaide symphony players, and vice versa.Cole Porter’s “Night and Day”, which figures in the lyric and melody of LRB’s “Reminiscing", affords the orchestra an opportunity to turn the hit parader into a major work. The eight pieces on the symphonic sides also include the favourite “Help Is On The W’ay” - plus the witty indictment of the faltering lady of the harbour, “Statue of Liberty” ~ a song obviously inspired by Viet Nam, Chile and Cuba.Amazing aspect of this live recording of exceptional quality is the fact that only three of the six and sometimes seven players are listed as contributing vocals. The vocal presence generated by the trio of singers is truly astounding - Shorrock, Goble and Birtles, who share songwriting contributions as well, have some prodigious talent when it comes to three-part harmonies. For any sceptics who may have suspected that the Little River Band was a studio hybrid, these speaker-rattling performances by Australia's current exports-leader, will both impress and make fans out of even a casual listener, TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRI., MAY 16, 1980- 3 Monty truly loves music .and it shows Servicing is an essential part of any guitar business, Monty says iüüllj ‘I grew up here and I like it’ was part of it."It’s so expensive in Calgary, I was just squeaking by and I had two kids and another on the way.You could see that you were making dough for these guys but when I asked them for more money, like good westerners, they procrastinated." Being your own boss was another.Even as a musician, he had always wanted to do things his way.As a tradesman, it was no different. He offered to buy back the machinery and take over the shop.Even if the store had not procrastinated, he probably would not have stayed.“I could have set up on my own out there.I was very well-known.I had all the business!" But no matter how long he stayed there, Brian would never be a westerner. He missed his home.“1 grew up here and I like it.” Despite his aversion to the uncertainty, he finds Quebec politically “exciting” and, unlike Alberta, "not too organized” to allow for variety and individual freedom."I missed the Frenchmen out there too.I’m French on my old man’s side. There’s French out there but not like here.I just miss speaking both languages.I’ve got deep roots here, deep roots. My mother’s side is all British Empire Loyalists, the Irish hill gang, and they go way back. Some people can leave and stay away. But I can't do it.” Last year, he came back to Quebec, seeking a supervisor’s job he had heard about in the guitar factory in La Patrie.Stopping off in Montreal, he spent an afternoon in what used to be Rufus.Although they were raking in the money, he realized that they didn't know what they were doing. He decided then to move back and set up his own shop.Coming home was a challenge filled with rewards.“To come back here where everyone is saying there’s nothing going on, to start up a business and keep my head above water, that was something.I keep telling people, Quebec is a place where you should start up your own little ‘patente’.You’ve got to specialize.” Brian’s repair shop, opposite Len-noxville Elementary School on Queen Street, opened last October. It’s a very efficient and friendly operation filled with the clean smells of wood. His business is steadily growing.“There are thousands of guitars out there and there’s always something going wrong." I wondered if he wasn’t out of the way here in the Townships.“Probably.But if a guy has a special job and you’ve already done work for him that he likes, he’ll come looking for you.And musicians are talking all the time.Wherever they’re playing they’ll tell other musicians.A musician will listen to another before anyone else.Musicians are finicky about their instruments. In Calgary, we did work for everybody Doucette, Roger Whittaker, everybody.” The day I dropped by for the interview, a guitar was picked up by Jim Corcoran -formerly of Jim et Bertrand, sometimes Lennox and a featured guest at the up coming Kate and Anna McGarrigle concert at the Outremont.“It doesn’t matter if we get the famous guys.Another guy’s buck is just as good as his.” Monty’s not afraid of competition There’s too much work In fact, that’s one of the reasons he left Calgary. He never had any time to do what he wanted but here it’s very “comfortable”.Aside from repairs, here Brian has found time to build guitars.Making them developed naturally out of customizing and has now become a major interest.Travelling down to the States to find just the right piece of wood, he has hand fashioned both electric and acoustic These works of art take from one to five weeks to finish and sell for $1000 and up But why, I asked, had he given up on making it as a professional musician At Highstreet’s benefit concert for the boat people in the packed Centennial Theatre last Valentine’s Day, he had stolen the show “I learned one thing in Calgary,” replied Monty.“The guys who had a lot of money and really enjoyed themselves only played on the weekends, part-timers.1 saw that's the way to do it.” Most of the Blues Busters have regular jobs.At first they got together just for the fun of it Then a permanent arrangement was worked out with the Georgian Hotel in Lennoxville, every second Saturday during the school year There is a forced retirement in the summer but they are usually too busy at their regular jobs anyway. They may do a few shows at places like the Legion, beginning again at the Georgian when the students return in the fall.“We started as a fun thing and it’s working out alright. It’s more what I want to play too With this band just hacking around, I feel better and play better than 1 ever have.” BUCK AND DOE RESTAURANT SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR CANADIAN FRIENDS DINNER milling cocktail crowd at Sherbrooke’s Reform Club, the Liberal hangout, he serves up a stiff shot of blunt on the rocks.“If the president of the club hadn’t assured me that he planned to turn it into a place for political discussion, I would not have come.” With lines like that, Liberal Leader Claude Ryan is doing to politics here what Britain’s Freddie Laker did to passenger air service.Sure, he doesn’t have the Laker showmanship. But both the father of Skytrain and the man who has acted as a kind of intellectual Mr.Fix-It in Quebec since 1945 operate on the same basic principle — no frills.“The (Quebec) Liberal party of the future has to distinguish itself by its unshakeable respect for intelligence,” Ryan lectured party members the day they chose him as their leader April 15, 1978.That meant the party must never “confuse the methods of communicating political convictions with the methods used to sell soap.” This was the same Ryan who, as publisher of the Montreal daily Le Devoir a short 18 months before, advised Quebecers in his editorials to turf out a Liberal government and vote for the Parti Québécois. The Liberals' answer to that was, within a year, to go running after Ryan to be their leader, DID IT HIS WAY How does he pull if off9 Not by his youthful good looks. He’s 55.He suffers from eczema and no make-up could conceal the redness, the furrows of that familiar Wives play important roles in refcampaign MONTREAL (CP) — *T don’t know where my wife is tonight, but I’m not worried,” Claude Ryan hesitates and adds with a smile: “I know she’s campaigning for the no side.” Madeleine Ryan was indeed out on the hustings — making campaign speeches at a women's rally, pumping hands at an old people’s home, spreading the federalist message wherever she went.Organizers say she has become one of the most sought after speakers in the referendum campaign since the birth of the so-called Yvette movement. It all started when federalist women became indignant at a chance remark made by Lise Payette, ardent feminist and Parti Québécois cabinet minister, who compared Mrs.Ryan to Yvette, the docile little girl who used to appear in French-language grade school primers.Mrs Payette apologized later for the remark, but it was too late Women supporting a no vote in the referendum were already organizing rallies and calling themselves Yvettes with a sense of pride, rather than shame.Mrs.Ryan, in a typical meeting at an east-end Montreal senior citizens’ residence, recently received a bouquet of flowers, a standing ovation and a welcoming song when she rose to speak.DIDN’T DISAPPOINT Although she was already late for another meeting — the ninth that day — she didn’t disappoint the audience, recounting anecdotes of her campaign experiences and the reasons people she met in her travels tell her they’re voting no.But Madeleine Ryan isn’t alone on the campaign scene.Elsewhere in the province, at a church basement rally for the yes committee, another woman was enthusiastically greeted and presented with flowers.Corinne Cote-Levesque, accompanying her husband Premier Rene Levesque, smiled nervously but said little, the strain she felt showing around her mouth.Although the campaign has been the first ever political exposure for the wives of both leaders, the contrast between Mrs.Ryan and Mrs.Cote-Levesque couldn’t be greater. It’s not only in age and appearance that they differ.Mrs.Ryan, in her mid-50s, wears matronly outfits and has short, straight grey hair that suits her down-to-earth manner.Mrs.Cote-Levesque, 36, her pinned-back hairstyle setting off her delicate cheekbones, prefers dangling earrings and elegant couturier fashions.Mrs.Ryan seems at ease making a speech, sparring with the audience, or shaking hands with well-wishers.Mrs.Cote-Levesque seems shy and uncomfortable in public.Even before the official campaign was under way, Mrs Ryan gave a rousing speech to a federalist rally and had the audience cheering, laughing and roaring "No” as she repeated the word in English.French and Italian.face with those deep-set eyes, that hooked nose and sharp chin. Why, the man even has cuffs on his pants and a sprinkling of dandruff on his wool suits.Married since 1958, father of five, he didn’t get to be Liberal leader and head of the federalist forces in the referendum campaign by long and faithful service in the salt mines of party organization either.Apart from a brief flirtation in the 1940s with the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, forerunner of the New Democratic Party, Ryan always shunned partisan politics as too confining. He joined the Liberals in January, 1978, when he went after the leadership. For a politician, he has unusual credentials — 35 years as shadow critic on applied Christianity. As national secretary of the Catholic Action movement from 1945 to 1962, and as editorialist at Le Devoir from 1962 to 1978, he decoded and probed the passing scene with a cool confidence and his trusty toolkit of Christian ethics.People listened. That’s one thing that Ryan never lacked — an audience. His editorials were one of the main attractions of Le Devoir.Even as a student he stood out and was heeded within his circle. As an adult, he established a solid reputation here and across Canada as the “conscience” of Quebec, a champion not so much of causes as of the traditional values of justice, liberty, integrity, hard work and discipline.STILL AT IT Among other things, that got him into the Canadian News Hall of Fame in 1968.It also got him an offer of membership in the Order of Canada which, he says, he turned down several years ago because he “didn’t want to hold a good conduct certificate from any government whatever.” He’s still at it today as Liberal leader and head of the committee for a no vote in the Quebec referendum. His firm belief in personal contact — as opposed to media hype — a s the key to a federalist referendum victory is but an adaptation of a 60-page pamphlet he published in 1959 on personal contact as the first step in a plan of action to assure the spread and maintenance of Christian values. All his stands today appear to be echoesor extensions of positions he spelled out years ago as recipes for social progress in tune with the Gospels. That’s the case with such referendum themes as the primacy of individual rights as opposed to collective rights; the limits of politics in solving human problems; the importance of personal commitment; and the avoidance of campaigns appealing to Quebec’s defensive, nationalist reflexes. But the man who could write in 1960 that Christians have a duty to “point out their faults to others in the name of Charity” would have trouble if he tried convincing voters today that charity is really his motive in knocking his political foes.In the heat of political battle, sometimes the pragmatic Christian witness slips and looks for all the world like the one who is casting the first stone. At one recent rally, he even referred to Premier Rene Levesque as “the prince of darkness.” Given all the talk about the decline in the importance of religion in Quebec, it’s interesting to note that the two opposition parties in the national assembly are both led by men with pronounced religious backgrounds.Michel LeMoignan, leader of the Union Nationale since March and a vice-president of the no committee in the referendum campaign, is a Roman Catholic priest. In 1944.Ryan shunned the priesthood to which some thought him destined on completion of his B.A.degree at Ste-Croix classical college — one of those Church-run educational institutions that disappeared in the 1960s.Instead, he enrolled at the University of Montreal’s school of social service and industrial relations where he studied for two years. He said recently that it was in 1944, as a young CCF supporter, he made the acquaintance of Allan Blakeney, then a newly elected CCF member of the Saskatchewan legislature and currently premier of that province.MAKES CONTACTS Ryan was still at university when he became full-time secretary of Catholic Action in 1945.Vice-president of the movement at the time was Daniel Johnson, who later became leader of the Union Nationale party and premier of Quebec from 1966 to 1968.Some of the leading members of the movement in Ryan's day were Gerard Pelletier, later to become a Trudeau cabinet minister and now Canadian ambassador to France, Marc Lalonde, federal energy minister: and Jeanne Sauve, currently speaker of the House of Commons. As head of the Institut Canadien d’Education des Adultes from 1955 to 1961.he worked with such figures as Pierre Trudeau and Jean Marchand — the latter then a union leader who went on to be a federal cabinet minister under Trudeau before becoming a senator. The religious background, including a stint at Rome’s Pontifical Gregorian University in 1951-52 where he studied Church and world history, and the tone of his writings earned him the nickname of “Pope of St.Sacrement Street” when he was publisher of Le Devoir. Some of his own partisans call him “the ayatollah.” a reference to the moralistic character of his guidelines for party organization and behavior. His name is also associated by scoffers with the “hand of God,” the result of a little episode that took place shortly after his election as Liberal leader in 1978.Ryan acknowledged on English-language television that in all the important moments of his life, he had felt guided by that hand. The response in Quebec was a general giggle. But when Ryan, unfazed, explained at length a couple of days later in a speech to an audience of businessmen that “hand of God” was just another way of saying Christian conscience, they listened and applauded. TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRI., MAY 16, 1980 5 May 20 .•Levesque resurrects old slogan QUEBEC (CP) - Rene Levesque would like Quebec’s May 20 referendum to be a rerun of the 1962 provincial election fought over the nationalization of electricity companies. In his campaign speeches, the premier often refers to the 1962 vote as a semireferendum, noting that opponents of the takeover have been proven wrong and publicly-ow-ned Hydro-Quebec has become a financial and technical success story.Levesque tells Quebecers that by voting yes to a mandate to negotiate sovereignty-associât ion, they will take a step toward becoming in a fuller sense (masters in our own house). That wjas Levesque’s 1962 campaign slogan, when he was natural resources minister in the reformist government of liberal premier Jean Lesage. The Liberal election win in 1960 marked the beginning of a period of rapid social change called the Quiet Revolution.Lesage's cabinet team, called “Tequipe de tonnere" (thunder team), included several political heavies but the lightning w-as provided by Levesque, a 37-year-old television journalist.Levesque was the only one in a group of four rising stars approached by Lesage who agreed to join him in 1960.The others were labor leader Jean Marchand, journalist Gerard Pelletier and law professor Pierre Elliott Trudeau.Levesque came to prominence in Quebec in the late 1950s as host of a public affairs show on Radio-Canada, the CBC's French network.EDUCATED BY STRIKE He got his political education on a picket line outside the CBC building in downtown Montreal during a 1959 strike by French-language producers seeking union recognition.Pleas by the strikers to CBC management and the federal Conservative government of John Diefenbaker fell on deaf ears and the strike went on for 68 days.“Some of us, maybe a lot of us, will come out of this permanently disgusted with a certain ideal called national unity,” Levesque wrote then, adding that “if such a strike had happened in English CBC it would .have lasted no more than half an hour.” Levesque was no stranger to English Quebec culture.Born Aug.24, 1922, his hometown of New Carlisle, on the rugged Gaspe peninsula, was mostly English-speaking, Levesque broke into broadcasting at 14.with a summer job at CHNC, the local radio station, translating news dispatches from The Canadian Press into French and reading them on the air.Two years later, the family moved to Quebec City after his father died in 1938.An avid reader, Levesque was a good but undisciplined student and preferred cardplaying to his law classes at Laval University. He worked part-time for Quebec City radio stations and in 1944 went to London as a war correspondent for the American Office of War Information, returning to Canada in 1946 after travelling with American forces in Europe in the final months of the Second World War.In the post-war period he worked for the international service of Radio-Canada in Montreal and became a war correspondent once again in Korea.WAS CBC STAR Levesque was Radio-Canada’s star reporter of the 1950s and got all the major assignments, such as the Canadian, Quebec and U S.presidential elections, royal tours and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. On his live television show, Point de Mire, he tackled one subject each week, such as the war in Algeria or the opening of the St.Lawrence Seaway.Armed with a cigarette in one hand and a piece of chalk in the other, Levesque would explain the situation in his rapid-fire, animated fashion using a blackboard, maps and film clips to drive home points. He revived the formal for the referendum campaign He’s a little fatter now and his hair, which runs from shades of grey through white, is longer in the back but more sparse on top.Going to the blackboard, Levesque explained that Quebec is rich in human and natural resources and he struck his favorite theme.“In electricity we're first in the world.” Then turning to attack the federal system, he noted — stressing the English pronunciation — that less than 10 per cent of em ployees at the publicly-owned “Canada Development Corporation” and "Atomic Energy of Canada" are francophones.Levesque showed his viewers a pile of reports on the "permanent crisis" between Quebec and the rest of Canada, including the most recent one, the Pepin-Robarts Task Force Report on Canadian Unity, saying that the problem has not been solved.“You could fill a library with these abortions.” Levesque first proposed sovereignty-association to the Quebec Liberals in 1967.“It means that Quebec should become a sovereign state,” he explained to party convention delegates in Quebec City.“Briefly, a regime in which two nations, one of which would be Quebec, the other a rearrangement of the rest of the country, associated in a new adaptation of the common market formula, to form a new whole which could, for example, be called the Canadian Union.” LEFT LIBERALS The Liberals didn’t buy it and Levesque left the party to form the Mouvement Soverainte-Association.A year later, the Parti Québécois was born.It contested Quebec elections in 1970 and 1973 and finally in 1976 came to power with 41 per cent of the vote on promises of good government. On the referendum campaign trail, Levesque is avoiding the name-calling Heart approach adopted by the no forces and has taken on the role of statesman, saying he is following in the footsteps of his predecessors. What he is proposing, he adds, is just the next logical step.Levesque reminds his audiences that he has spent 20 years in politics and at 57 he has no other ambitions."1 don’t want Trudeau’s job.” A yes vote would not mean sovereignty-association right away, because built into the question is the promise of a second referendum after negotiations with Ottawa, which he sees as inevitable.Levesque says he "would swallow" a no vote and get on with governing Quebec. But a negative vote would not be the end of the line if a substantial number of French-speaking Quebecers say yes.In that case, perhaps Levesque would give his followers a message like the one he delivered after the 1970 election when the PQ only elected seven members after taking24 per cent of the popular vote.“Don’t you find that this defeat has the air of a victory?” Record Perry Beaton RENE LEVESQUE .lightning of Lesage's thunder team' MBEMIACMOME i 5 mwEwmrm most American of movie superstars, playing Dr.Norman Bethune, that most Canadian of heroes. Two Montreal producers are asking Redford to headline the $20-million Bethune screen biography to be filmed in China next year Jack Nicholson rejected the role two years ago and apparently will not reconsider, so they want the box-office appeal of Redford to ensure that the movie gets adequate Hollywood financing. This apparently rules out the best-qualified Canadian for the role,Donald Sutherland, who played Bethune in a CBC televsion drama two years ago.?Now that the Cannes Film Festival is in full swing, stories about the annual event are making the rounds.Remember the year Sophia Loren and Princess Grace of Monaco arrived the same day and created such a fantastic traffic jam trying to walk two blocks together arm in arm that several photographers wound up in hospital0 Then there's the year a starlet peeled off her bra in front of Robert Mitchum and shocked everyone.?Success hasn’t affected 10-year-old actor Ricky Schroder, who prefers swimming to jetting half way across the world.Schroder, who made his movie debut in The Champ with John Voigt and Faye Dunaway, is visiting the Cannes Film Festival with his parents. He will soon play Little Lord Fauntleroy in an American television remake being filmed in July.Fauntleroy is about a poor kid who becomes rich. The same happened to Schroder, who started doing television commercials at the age of three months and still goes to a regular school.Asked how his life had changed.Shroder shrugs and says: “I used to get an allowance of $1 a week but now I don’t get all the money I make Now I can have everything I want because I am rich.lam a kid so I can’t have it all at once.We put it in the bank.” Actress Jody Foster is not just another pretty face — she's got a mind to match.Miss Foster 17, who starred as one of four teenaged girls awash in sex and drugs in a California suburb in the movie Foxes, says she will enter Yale University as a freshman this fall.A straight-A student and valedictorian of her 30-member class at Los Angeles’s rigorous Lycee Français, Miss Foster applied to and was accepted at the cream-of-the-crop of American universities — Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Berkeley and Stanford.Fluent in French, she intends to study literature and writing, and not enrol in the school’s drama school, which produced such stars as Meryl Streep, Paul Newman, and Henry Winkler.TOWNSHIPS WEEK FRI , MAY 16, 1980 7 o NOW! She found that doing a half-hour daytime show was a completely different experience for her.“We take a week to do a half-hour show in California." she marveled, "This is just great!" Another pretty lady who thinks, this is great,' is Candi Earley who plays Donna on "All My Children." 'One Day At A Time,' 'Alice,' The Jeffersons' and 'Trapper John.' ABC suffered with 'Out of the Blue' and ‘Galactica' being sent to the bottom of the ratings heap.Even ABC's 'Sunday Movie,' traditionally their best flick of the week, suffered from the CBS onslaught, NBC.never a Sunday powerhouse, moved 'CHiPs' into the Sunday schedule opposite 'Archie' and saved themselves from total disaster.Monday has always been a sore spot for ABC, and with '240-Robert' crashing early on.the network quickly sent in Laverne and Shirley’ and 'Angie.' Both took a nose dive with NBCs 'Little House' still holding Its own and CBS holding on early in the evening with 'WKRP' and picking up strength with 'M*A*S*H,' House Calls' and 'Lou Grant.' ABC then continued to spiral downward with 'Stone' and 'Family,' while NBC did O.K.with its 'Monday Movie.' Tuesday still belonged to ABC with ‘Happy Days' rebounding after a dismal start. After 'Laverne' returned to its hammocked position after Fonzie and Co., ABC captured the rest of the evening with Three's Company,' Taxi' and 'Hart to Hart.’ CBS’s ‘White Shadow' was neither here nor there, but the Tuesday Movie' showed some strength with NBC's 'Lobo' doing passable work and the ‘Big Show' trying to find an audience.Wednesday went again to ABC based on the strength of Eight is Enough,' ‘Charlie’s Angels' and ‘Vegas,’ but NBC showed that it could compete, with Real People' and 'Diff'rent Strokes' doing very, very well.CBS tried many series in the early evening time slot opposite 'Eight' and Real People' and all went bye, bye.Its Wednesday Movie,' though, did better than expected.Thursday had ABC also scoring a hard fought victory over both competing ‘webs' as ‘Mork and Mindy,' after Leing plastered on Sundays, returned to its Thursday nt.st with sufficient results, 'Benson,' 'Barney Miller,’ 'Soap' and ‘20/20’ also did well. The Waltons,' on CBS, lost some of its’ punch as did ‘Barnaby Jones.' with 'Knots Landing' showing some promise.NBC’s ‘Buck Rogers’ had some early promise, but the competition was too tough.'Quincy' still held its own with ‘Kate Columbo’ and 'Skag' having big problems.Friday, CBS swamped the competition with The Incredible Hulk,' 'The Dukes of Hazzard' and 'Dallas' destroying NBC's and ABC's movies and specials.Saturday was split between ABC and NBC with 'BJ and the Bear' and 'CHiPs' winning the first part of the evening until January, but ABC taking the rest of the schedule with ‘Love Boat’ and a rejuvenated 'Fantasy Island.' CBS tried numerous combinations, but only 'The Tim Conway Show' did well.GO’ 1957 Stars Elvis Presley, Pat Priest 0 THE TONIGHT SHOW Host Johnny Carson.Guests Gay Talese, Barbara Mandrel, (90 mins.) 0 © ABC NEWS NIGHTUNE 11:45 0 GUNSMOKE 11:50 O©LOVEBOAT-BARETTA Love Boat- 'Second Time Around' One ot Doc's ex-wives travels with a supposed tiance to lure Doc back into marriage.Baretta The Reunion' The murder ota philanthropistleads Barettatoa gangster whorunsa prostitution ring.(Repeat; 2 hrs , 15 mins.) 12:00© MOVIE -(DRAMA) "Nightof the Iguana" 1964 Richard Burton, Deborah Kerr.A former clergyman turned bus tour guide in Mexico, becomes involved with three women.(2 hrs.) 12:20 O CINEMA Tous peuvent me tuer' 1957 Anouk Aime, Francois Perrier.Cinq complices commettent un audacieux vol et déposent leur butin, desbijoux, dans un lieu sur En prison, ils sont successivement assassines de façon mystérieuse, Un seul survivra.(105 m.) 1:00 0 TOMORROW Host Torn Snyder.Guest: Scatman Crothers (60mins ) © DERNIERE EDITION 1:30 O INFORMA SOIR MURDER CAN HURT YOU_________________ TV's criminal class doesn't stand a chance when faced with this awesome lineup of almost familiar faces in 'Murder Can Hurt You!,' a comedy spoof of television s most famous detec fives airing as an ABC Movie Special on ABC TV WEDNESDAY.MAY 21 The semi sleuths (clockwise from center) are Victor Buono (Ironbottom) and Jimmie Walker (Parks, his wheelchair driver), Tony Danza (Labretta), Burt Young (Palumbo), Connie Stevens (Salty, the police person), Gavin MacLeod (Nojak), John By net and Jamie Farr (Studsky and Hutch, but the other way around) and Buck Owens (Mac Skye).CHECK IISTINGS KIR E X»C1 IIMF Thursday THE WALTONS In celebration of the 200th hour of 'The Waltons,' Earl Hamner (pictured), creator of the Peabody and multi-Emmy Award-winning drama series, ap pears as host-narrator, moving among the scenes, in a special new two-hour episode which includes highlights from the show's past eight seasons and a visit to Hamner's boyhood home in Virginia's Blue Ridge Moun tains, where he talks to his mother and brothers and sisters, upon whom he modeled the Walton characters It will be broadcast THURSDAY, MAY 2?on CBS-TV.CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT TIME EVENING 6:00 0'CE SOIR 0000© NEWS 0 INFORMA BLOC © LE DIX VOUS INFORME © ABC NEWS © ZOOM 6:30 0 NBC NEWS O© LES TANNANTS O ABC NEWS © BEWITCHED © OVER EASY Guest: Norman Cousins.Host: Hugh Downs.6:40 O LE 9 VOUS INFORME 7:00 Q0 ZOOM SUR LES BETES LIBRES La Bonne Bouffe’ O CBS NEWS 0 CAROL BURNETT AND FRIENDS 0 HAPPY DAYS O TIC TAC DOUGH © BENSON Ordered by the governor to cut the staff, Benson discovers he’s a poor excuse lor a hatchet man when it comes to firing the mansion’s beloved pastry cook (Repeat) © HOGAN S HEROES © OPEN STUDIO 7:30 0 O DU TAC AU TAC Le Tournoi de Golf 0 CROSS WITS 0 M.A.S.H.O REACH FOR THE TOP O© CHiPs 0 JOKER S WILD © LITTLEST HOBO Smoke Hobo must parachute from a plane to save the life of a child who has swallowed poison.© ALL IN THE FAMILY © DICK CAVETT SHOW 8:00 0 0 LA SOIREE OU HOCKEY O THE WALTONS The Wal tons relive a decade of family triumphs and disasters in a retrospective celebrating the series' 200th hour (2 hrs ) 0© BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25th CENTURY Frank Gorshin guest stars as the sinister leader of a band of assassins who plan to wreak vengeance on the Earth by obliterating New Chicago'-Buck’s hometown and his last connection with the 20th century.(Repeat; 90 mins.)
