Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY “Brain” by Robin Cook (ACADEMIC PRESS): *15.50, 285 pp.After a brief detour for a voyage up the Nile, with his bestselling novel about Egyptology (“Sphinx”), Robin Cook returns to the familiar, homey confines of the hospitals that he knows so well, for his latest thriller, “Brain”.Cook, a surgeon and teacher of ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, picks up where he left off in “Coma”,"in his short, but effective career as a novelist who tells us convincingly of all of the frightening things that can happen to us if we are hospitalized.With “Coma” it was the pirating of portions of the human anatomy that provided the grisly and horrible drama, but with “Brain”, the title is the first clue to the complex scam that is being perpetrated on the innocent patients at the Hobson University Medical Centre in New York City.A series of incidents involving young ladies being admitted by Hobson’s Gynecology service suggests some diabolical pattern to the hero of the piece — Dr.Martin Philips, the Assistant Chief of Neuroradiology.Philips begins to note that the young ladies, who undergo a fairly routine Pap-smear test, develop complications that can be traced to some rather startling neurological trauma.Once Cook strips away the heavy layers of medical jargon naturally encountered in the neuroradiologist’s normal working day of reading brain scans and angiograms, and gets down to the business of delineating some of the stereotypical characterizations, the novel begins to move briskly.There is Mannerheim, the egotistical surgeon, who runs the OR like an Auschwitz commandant; as well as Dr.Goldblatt, a neuroradiologist who has become the Chief of radiology in the hospital, but whose knowledge of the computer-age refinements in radiology has been allowed to deteriorate.Werner, a cadaverous, emaciated man is found to be the “diener”, the keeper of the morgue in the secluded bowels of the hospital, to where Robin Cook sends Dr.Philips for several chilling scenes reminiscent of the cadaver-ducking episode in “Coma”.This medical thriller does about as much for the public relations image of hospitals as the classic movie, “Hospital”, did, starring George C.Scott.Robin Cook takes a current pair of phenomena — computerized everything, and the perplexing anatomy of the human brain — and spins out a morbidly believable little tale guaranteed to make him a sought-after speaker at his own hospital's fund-raisers.OFF THE RECORD .38 Special WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS (A&M) Ten years ago these Southern boys would have been pigeon-holed as “country-rockers”, but Wild-eyed Southern Boys attests to the widened horizons that this once-narrow categorization has opened to.Perhaps it was the strange move that saw Joe Walsh joining the Eagles and the raw, tough sound that marked Hotel California, which resulted.38 Special is a band that appears to have cut their teeth on the music of a blend of Cream and the All-mans, resulting in this very distinctive, driving album that puts the rock back in country.Coming out of Jacksonville, Florida, with their formative years as a travelling bar band easily recognized on every hot lick they perform, .38 Special sound more mature than a 4-album discography might indicate.The title track here tells just where this sextet comes from — you can hear hints of the great Skynyrd Band, and particularly in the guitar-arrangements just enough of the influence of heavy-metal to heighten the interest.There's not really a boring minute on this album which is surprising in a style of music that lends itself to repetitive guitar solos and excesses in pacing.Sure to garner hours of I'M play is “Hittin1 and Runnin’," which wouldn’t make a bad choice as a take-notice single for.38 Specia 1.TotoTURN BACK (COLUMBIA) If there was a slight tailing off with Toto’s follow-up album Hydra, after their ear-worthy debut, Hold the Line, their third.Turn Back solidly establishes this L A.outfit as the class of their stylistic groove.As with the Seventies' ultra-successful David Gates & Bread, Toto is a cooperative joining of skilled session men from the Music Capitol of the U.S Led by Bobby Kimball’s soulful, inspired vocals on songs such as their single release, ’ ‘Goodbye Eleanor”, Toto boasts a pair of gifted keyboardists — Steve Porcaro, and the principal writer, David Paich.These twin masters of the 88’s weave a distinctive blend into the selections by Toto marked by driving tempos and ever-shifting twists in melodies.While Hydra was slightly uneven, and tended toward some extended instrumental work, Turn Back has a second side that showcases the strongest vocal harmonies to come from this progressive band.There’s a little clown in all of us m.j SHERBROOKE (NY) — Anyone seriously interested in clowning around for fun and profit is invited to sign up for the clown workshops offered by La Bebelle.This talented local troup of clowns often stage shows of their own creation in Sherbrooke and other parts of the province for adults, as well as children.The workshops will include training in body language, exercises in clown posturing, mime, new games, dramatic express, improvisation, make-up and 'on-the-job' outings.Two groups of apprentice clowns are being formed for two intensive weekend sessions, each lasting a total of 25 hours.The first takes place this weekend and next, March 7-8 and March 14-15.The second will be held in April, with specific dates still to be determined.The cost is a excellence, feeding the information via a bilingual television hook-up to regional stations across the country.The 12 awards were chosen by a jury from a selection of 53 programs entered from 17 production centres belonging to the CBC English network and the French-language Radio-Canada.The winners in each category were: —Drama— War Brides, a two-hour CBC Toronto film special produced by Bill Gough, directed by Martin Lavut and written by Grahame Woods.A special mention went to the Radio-Canada Montreal production of Entre Le Soleil et L’Eau produced by Gilles Senecal and written by Sylvie Gelinas Sicotte.—Music— L’Oiseau de Feu, a program featuring the Montreal Symphony Ochestra and Canadian dancers in Stravinsky’s Fire Bird produced by Jean-Yves Landry for Radio-Canada.—Documentary—
