Dave Rowland - Sugar Free.‘‘About a year ago Kenny Rogers and I were playing tennis, and he told me if I ever went on my own, I should call the first album, Sugar Free, so we’re going with it,” Dave says.+ + + ‘Td like that one big hit record that would make me a household name,” says Iris Larratt.Instead of establishing herself with that “one big hit,” Iris seems to be doing it with a succession of moderate hits.In 1979 her very first single.You Can’t Make Love To A Memory, Country music By DAVE «V1MULHOL.LAND bounded up the charts both here and in the United States.The song still receives a lot of airplay.She followed it with Sorry Doesn’t Always Make It Right and She Won’t Love You.Her recent single.I’ve Got A Cowboy in the Saddle, made moderate gains in the U.S.and got as high as number 13 on RPM Magazine’s national country chart.Her record sales have been good enough to land her Juno nominees as Country Female Vocalist of the Year in 1981 and again this year.But if moderate success hasn’t made Iris Larratt a household name, it’s certainly established her with country broadcasters.They recently named her among their top three choices, along with Carroll Baker and Anne Murray, for Canadian country female vocalists.As for the future.“Well, there’s a new album coming any day now,” Iris says.“It’s more country than the last album; not as many strings and not as overly produced.” Maybe it’ll make her a household name.+ -f T Slic’s too pretty to cry; Danny Hooper; Saddletramp Records', STR-8101.Danny Hooper has a very good voice, but he has absolutely no soul.There isn’t a false note in this slickly produced album.There also isn’t any hint that Hooper has any emotional range.The best song on the album is his own composition, Sick And Tired Of It All.It’s well written and he manages to get some expression into his lyrics.But on the other nine songs.Hooper's singing is as squeaky clean as his picture on the album cover.Bland country.S.Barry Blues Band benefit to aid ailing Sawyerville co-op I ¦WÊÊÊf*^ Iris Larratt.wants one big hit on the charts.SAWYERVILLE - Another Townships landmark is in danger of disappearance.The seven-year-old Sawyerville Co-Op, The Corner ?Cl a Music Chart No.TITLE ARTIST LAST WEEK WEEKS ON i.Glad To Know You Chas Jankel 3 9 2.I Love Rock 8.Roll Joan Jett 2 12 3.We Got The Beat Go Go’s 4 11 4 Freeze Frame J.Geils Band 6 10 5.Do You Believe In Love Huey Lewis 7 11 6.Don’t Talk To Strangers Rick Springfield 9 7 7.Don’tYou WantMe Human League 10 7 8.Make A Move On Me Olivia Newton-John 1 14 9.Passion The Flirts 8 10 10.Fantasy Aldo Nova 11 8 11.As-Tu Du Feu?Bill 5 11 12.Did It In A Minute Hall & Oates 17 6 13.Key Largo n Bertie Higgins 13 6 14.Movie Medley Beatles 18 6 15.Find Another Fool Quarte rflash 16 7 16 Stars On Stevie Stars on 45 22 5 17.Love Buzz Voggue 12 11 18.Edge Of 17 Stevie Nicks 17 9 19.Empty Garden Elton John 25 7 20.Don’t Turn Me Away 10 CC 20 9 21.Love Is The Drug Ronnie Griffith 30 4 22.Ebony 8c Ivory Paul McCartney 34 4 23.That Girl Stevie Wonder 14 13 24.Mama Used To Say Junior 29 2 25.’65 Love Affair Paul Davis 36 3 26.Nobody Said It Was Easy Le Roux 26 5 27.Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk Dr Hook 27 5 28.When It’s Over Loverboy 33 5 29.You Can Madeleen Kane 23 12 30.Coin’ Down Greg Guidry 35 4 31.The Other Woman Ray Parker Jr.37 2 32.Get Down On It Kool& the Gang 38 3 33.Hang Fire Rolling Stones 39 3 34.Genius Of Love Tom Tom Club PL 1 35.Heat Of The Moment Asia PL 1 36.What Kind Of Love Is This Streetheart 31 6 37.Turn On Your Radar Prism 40 2 38.Just An Illusion Imagination PL 1 39.Hiding From Love Rosetta Stone PL 1 40.Only A Fool Trooper PL 1 Store is in dire financial straits and in danger of being dissolved.Established as a liaison between the nutrition-minded and the community it served, the store was basically subsidized by profits and cash flow from the large co-op membership.The opening of TAlentour in Lennoxville and the de-centralization of the co-op movement meant a decreasing subsidy, coupled with an increase in operating costs.This year, with the loss in profits from organic orange sales due to adverse weather conditions, the debts mounted quickly.The Corner Store is considering a change in location, more dynamic community interaction, and a series of benefit functions to help cover operating costs.The store will continue its cooking courses, expanding them to include nutritional information on natural foods.An outdoor summer cafe is planned with the possibility of displaying local arts and crafts at low mark-ups.The first benefit concert will feature Montreal’s premier blues group.The Stephen Barry Blues Band.The group is no stranger to the area, having played in Sherbrooke to a loyal and increasingly strong audience twice.Their virtuosity is underscored by their recent choice as back-up group for top blues names in Montreal, including Buddy Guy and Big Mama Thornton.The rock ’n roll night will feature a heavy mix of basic R & R and Barry’s laid-back approach to the blues.Their one-night appearance will take place in Birchton, about 15 minutes from Lennoxville, Saturday, May 8, at the Cedrier du Prevert.Show time is at 8:30 p.m.with dancing going into the wee hours of the morning.Advance tickets and information are available at: La Grande Ruche 961 Galt W., Sherbrooke 562-9973 Little Forks Restaurant 115 Queen in Lennoxville 562-9046 The Corner Store Eaton Corner 875-5171.The Stephen Barry Blues Band is featured in a benefit concert for the Sawyerville co-op Saturday. TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MAY 7,1982—3 Furniture show: A little schlock, a lot of talent PHOTO/MERRITT CLIFTON By Merritt Clifton BRIGHAM — Young in years, furniture-maker Gilles Champigny practices his craft with the oldest of techniques.His hand-tool demonstrations highlighted the annual Maison Notre Dame des Erables arts and crafts fair in Brigham last weekend, and for the second year running, his traditional chests and buffets stole the show.Using pegs instead of nails, Champigny handrubs his creations with beeswax until only an expert could tell them from Québécois craftsmanship of centuries ago.Conceived to promote craft products from the Maison Notre Dame des Erables’ own manual training workshops, the fair now includes artisans from the community, as well.Present last Saturday and Sunday were potter Richard Surette, who lives right across the street, weaver Rene Pincince of Bromont, and woodworker Georges Caron, offering a variety of plaques and cribbage-boards.Woven goods and ceramic pieces by the Maison Notre Dame des Erables' mentally handicapped students dominated the exhibition, which also included small leather items, rag-dolls, and artificial flowers.Critical comment: As usual at local exhibitions, schlock far outweighed quality.But that can’t be blamed on the Maison Notre Dame des Erables kids, who, retarded or not, are obviously quite technically proficient at weaving, knitting, and whatever else they’ve been set to.On the whole, the kids, who don’t sign their work, outshine the so-called professionals who do, and one suspects that they’ve been set to turning out schlock in many cases only because their professional instructors can’t stand the competition.BEAPART OFTHEACTION BEAPART Public judges professional photographers Some of Quebec's top photographers are featured in a 10-day exhibition by the students of Les Loisirs de Granby.Judges for the event included, left to right, Andre Germain, Hydro-Quebec; Robert Lorange, photography director at Granby; Lisette de Lottinville, Granby portraitist; Bob Aciaro, commercial and industrial, Lachine; Frank Kristian, commercial photographer and Joseph Simone, Canadian photographer of the year.The public is invited to judge the competition, then their results will be compared to those of the professionals.Kristian went around to all the 104 photos and pointed out what could have made them better.Below, the portrait would have been better if the hand was less prominent.** \r RECORD/PERRY BEATON ¦Ü So ., missing.“Overwhelmingly, the best picture I have seen so ta Ms year, and though 1982 is young, I 14 YEARS the rest ol the year offering a better one.” -Bernard Drew.Gannett Newspapers missing."'Missing' abounds in images that made my skin crawl with tear bom ot nightmarish anarchy Jack temmon s heht-back emotroo is like a silent scream:' -Bruce Williamson Playboy missing.“Sissy Space* gives her finest, most direct and sincere performance to date.Missing' is a magnificent achievement that towers over most films one sees in the course of a year, and I recommend it strongly" -Rex Reed.GO Magazine missing.BASED ON A TRUE STORY SISSY SPACER JACK LEMMON Oim.iwi by COSTA GAWRAS JOHN BELUSHI & BLAIR BROWN I V/lr’II llli'li Hil l llli ll lli'ill'll Mi Allil llhtl U'ib itol rmulc>rir\ ' * Continental-^1 Divide Week & Sat Divide 7 00, Missing 9 00 Sun Matinee Divide 1 30 Missing 3 30 Closad from 5:30 to 6:30 Sun p m Divide 7 00.Missing 9:00 Cinema CAPITOL 59 King est SBS-OW 4—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MAY 7,1982 The search for the perfect beast is over By Carla Straessle Both Gordon Kohl and Bruce Aikman insist that the long-haired, horned and prehistoric-looking Highland Cattle from the Scottish Highlands and west coastal islands is the ideal breed for this country.Although it has failed to catch on in the east until only recently, it has been a far more common sight west of Quebec since the turn of the century The breed’s merits are many, not least of which is its superior marbled beef, still relatively unknown here, but coasidered prime in the U.K.They are also very docile and hardv animals, easy on fences, and require only little and low-oualily pasture land Most of all, they,thrive outdoors even in the harshest of Canadian winters thanks to their unusually thick hide and great profusion of hair which includes a downy undercoat and a long outercoat which may reach 13 inches.Aikman says, “The healthiest way to winter an animal is outside.” Kohl and Aikman are the proud co-owners of Jille Buidhe < Golden Boy in Cielic, of Benmore, a bull they biui.g' over from Scotland to, in Kohl's words, “beef up their stock.’ He is of very good lineage and both his owners say there will be an excellent market for his male progeny for breeding purposes as there are few of his calibre around.Aikman reports he’s had “a tremendous amount of inquiries,” and added, “everyone wants breeding stock, and it’s hard to find." Inquiries came not only from Canada, but also from the U.S Aikman was the first of the two to experiment with this breed after having tried many others.He got his first Highlanders four years ago andw'as the only one in Quebec at the time with the breed, much to his surprise.“A good part of Eastern Canada is ideal for Highland Cattle.Quebec only produces 15 per cent of the beef it consumes.Most of it comes from Alberta.We could produce most of it if wc used our land.” He said other (tuebecers had had them before but for some reason they didn’t catch on.One explanation for this is that many farmers lend to conservatively follow their lathers footsteps, opting for the breeds they know, and also, people arc often wary of the Highlanders' pointed horns.Aikman prefers them by far to 'he Oilier beef cattle he has raised.The; are the easiest thing on Iceces I’ve ever seen.” His main fem e $ MO O' HELP RED CROSS 1 î>- ** I» I ¦ c .¦¦ ' ;¦ ««ft m ^ SS***:.v mk'Mm Rw* v*« & was?1 Oi, «I :•• •«: ’¦i S ^ .* ¦ft , # ¦ ’> A h jy.KJ| horns Kohl became interested in the breed because the only pasture land he had was overgrown fields.He discovered that he was practically neighbor with Aikman, one of Quebec’s six registered Highland breeders at the time, whose farm near Way’s Mills on the Old Stage Road is not far from Kohl’s in Georgeville.Kohl bought his first three heifers a year ago from a breeder in Shelburne.Ontario and bred them to Aikman’s old bull Patrick, about 10 months ago.By a freak of nature, he had the misfortune to lose his first calf early this year because of a breech birth The calf was turned backwards inside the mother and drowns or suffocates if it doesn’t come out quickly.Since this unfortunate incident, however, his two other cows have each delivered healthy calves which look more like furry, little teddy-bears than cattle.Kohl laughs about it in retrospect, or at least consoles himself by considering the statistics released by an American Highland Cattle publication which state that while most cattle breeds have birthing difficulties about 5 per cent of the time, Highlanders do at a rate of only about 1 and a fraction per cent.Since his second calf was badly positioned and had to be moved around inside the mother, he classifies this, too, as a difficult birth.He stated, seeing the lighter side, “66.6 per cent of my cows have had trouble, so if these statistics are right, I’ll never have trouble again.” After four years experience and 17 calves.Aikman says he feels it’s usually best to leave a Highland cow whose mothering instincts are highly developed to her own along with uuiMc & dancing AlNDftE LEPTSKai thc pihn special Menu OPEN \EE1> \\ SI M) YY ( liiUlrdi iium-r 12 \ car* ld — 100 *wPtbsTer ht.-i hmiilown Sherbrooke I entrance .'ifl! level W cliMer PurktiVg 1|JOA msn agi JO) paAe|d mog -ç suima efosauum agi JOj ueiuaseq jsjij f jagopd e s»an >|JOA msn Z jaAenaj xos augAA oBeoiga -f S43/WSU^ Hollywood seeks jocks By Steve K.Walz More and more aging athletes are beginning new careers in Hollywood.Astros ace hurler Don Sutton, who is nearing the end of his major-league pitching career, signed a feature movie deal with an independent producer to play Grover Cleveland Alexander, the legendary pitcher of the 1920s.That role was once played by Ronald Reagan in the 1952 film, “The Winning Team.’1 Royals third baseman George Brett has reportedly given his OK to star in a remake of the 1914 screen classic “The Moving Picture Cowboy." There’s also a report that Lee Meriwether ("Barnaby Jones") who has her own production company would iike to have Reds fireballer Tom Seaver as her co-star in a proiect called "Scarsdale." Seaver has remained mum about a prospective movie career because he is preoccupied with recovering from a nagging back injury.Yankee shortstop Bucky Dent tried his hand at acting a few years ago when he co-starred in the ABC-TV movie “Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders." After Bucky's uninspiring performance, it's best that he concentrate on his baseball career.Two ex-pro football stars.Bubba Smith and Ben Davidson, have had moderate success playing tough guys in various movies and TV shows.Two other sports movies are in the works, but the producers are looking to fill the lead roles with established actors.Producer Gerry Gross has reportedly signed Joe Don Baker (“Eischeid”) to play the title role in the “Babe Ruth Story," which is supposed to go before the cameras later this year.John Tracy is interested in having "Ragtime" star Howard Rollins play Jackie Robinson in a film to be made later this year There's also been talk of doing a movie based on the exploits ot ex-Yankee skipper Billy Martin, now the manager of the Oakland A's, Casting the roles o! suffer through trial periods.I felt like this role was really padded from the beginning so I wouldn't knock it by saying I wish it were another character.I do find him unbelievably trusting and naive at times but that is part of the character Q.: It doesn't seem to affect his popularity as far as with young teenage girls.I think that says something about the audience out there as far as what they expect to see.A.: They like variety.I mean, not everybody has to be Luke Spencer and not everybody has to be Kelly Nelson, you know, I think that is a mistake that people make a lot of times.They say, well, this sells over here so everybody is going to do it.Then it stops selling because everybody is doing it.Someone lias the guts enough to try something else and that sells and then everybody copies them, q.: Tell us a little bit about your new album and tell us about the album Images and is that still available?V: Yes.We did that on a limited release mainly through like soap magazines and to the soap public sort of to test the waters and we sold out our first pressing (which is kind of an unusual thing even on a major label) and so we are pressing ahead and starting work on a two sided single, first, and releasing that on a much larger scale.Recap: 5/3 - 5/7 Preview: 5/10 - 5/14 GENERAL HOSPITAL - Luke thinks Laura T.is being controlled by David.Joe tells Ann he can get Bradshaw off appearing on TV.Elliot Gould is the latest movie star to move to the small screen, although the veteran actor says that his once lucrative film career is "not dead yet." Gould makes his television dramatic debut as a husband and father in the throes of a marital crisis in CBS's "Rules of a Marriage," airing on May 10 and 11.Elizabeth Montgomery co-stars in the four-hour drama.The New York native was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the 1969 film "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice." His co-stars, Robert Culp, Natalie Wood and Dyan Cannon, also have starred in TV projects."Though this is my first dramatic TV role, I found this to be a very good career opportunity and I'm very happy with it.In fact, I wouldn't even mind doing a TV series if the price was right,” Gould says."Most of the network and movie executives don't know what they're doing.The networks and movie studios are just corporate appendages to the conglomerates that won them Elliot Gould Let's face it, the bureaucrats are at a dead end."And although I feel TV and movie production is at a stalemate in terms of evolution, things will return to normal.I mean, look at England.TV, especially, has to be more than a commercial medium.” "Despite my past, this was not an easy role for me becuase if was written by somebody else," says Gould, who at one time was married to singer-actress Barbra Streisand."But I'll tell you what this drama is totally contemporary as far as dealing with the trials and tribulations of marriage."I tried to make myself one with the material.To me, ‘The Rules of Marriage,’ are parallel to the laws of nature." 14—TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY, MAY 7,1982 Monday DAYTIME SPORTS pilots containing regal settings in fictitious kingdoms are in various stages of development NBC's "Fit for a King” centers around a contemporary royal family in a small European country and stars Dick Van Patten { "Eight Is Enough") and Katherine Hel-mond ("Soap”).CBS's entry is "Greystone's Odyssey” starring Jeff Conaway ("Taxi") as a dashing do-gooder in a mythical land during the days of King Arthur.ABC is making "The Quest," which is also known as “Lands End to Lands End," on location in France.The story, by Stephen J.Cannell ("The Greatest American Hero"), concerns four Americans Oppenheimer is one of the most puzzling figures in contemporary American history.In 1945, he was considered a hero atler successfully directing the Manhattan Project, which was the largest scientific research project in history.The project produced the world's first atomic weapons and brought about an end to World War II.Yet in 1953, President Eisenhower was pressured to revoke Oppenheimer's security clearance until charges that he was a Soviet spy could be properly answered.The claim had its roots in Oppenheimer's early days as a left-wing intellectual and physics professor at the University of California at Berkeley."Oppenheimer" portrays the controversial physicist's rise and fall over a period of 15 years, from his Berkeley leaching days through setting up and operating the secret bomb laboratory in New Mexico in the early 1940s.GETTING RESPECT Will Rodney Dangerfield finally get the respect he deserves?The answer can be seen in the comedian's first prime-time special, “The Rodney Dangerfield Show," airing WEDNESDAY, MAY 12 on ABC.CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT TIME mass profest concert where Tony and Rhonda’s band is performing.(R) © MEDIA PROBES Lan guage" Victor Borge offers his own special humor in an exploration of the impact of language on culture.Ç 8:30 © MT.ST.HELENS: WHY THEY DIED The policies, procedures and judgements of scientists and government officials concerning the eruption of Mt St Helens in May of 1980 where 60 people died are questioned.9:00 O ELEANOR.FIRST LADY OF THE WORLD The life of Eleanor Roosevelt after the death of her husband.President Franklin Roosevelt, is chronicled;
