Piggery: You’ve come a long way, piglet By Timothy Belford Summer theatre in North Hatley has long been a tradition and reports of amateur productions as far back as the late nineteenth century indicate a community enthusiasm for the arts that has carried over to this day.Whether it was the North Hatley Playhouse, The Brae Manor Playhouse or the latest edition, the Piggery, residents of this lake-side village have supported “their theatre” with time, labor and money.It seems only fitting therefore, as the Piggery opens its 17th season, to take a quick look at how things have changed.In 1964, following the disastrous fire that destroyed the Brae Manor Playhouse, many residents of the Townships, and particularly of North Hatley, decided that a new facility was in order.At this point, Arthur Virgin, a long-time resident of North Hatley and supporter of the arts, came forward with a suggestion and an offer that couldn’t be refused.Virgin donated a piggery, five acres of land and the sum of $5,000 with the suggestion that the community could supply the rest.And supply it they did.First, a fund-raising committee managed to secure $60,000 in donations and then, following Virgin’s selfless attitude, Montreal architect Patrick Stoker donated his time and skills to design and produce a 300-seat theatre.Thus the Townships Playhouse Guild was formed and the newly-named Piggery opened in 1965.For the next seven years things continued much as they had in the past with the Piggery producing a large number of amateur productions in both English and French.In 1972 however, the members of the Playhouse Guild decided to take the giant step of producing a fully professional season.To do this they contracted with the Montreal International r0W!SS«i)l{ màtâ With the enthusiastic support of local residents and the architectural expertise of Montrealer Patrick Stoker, The Piggery opened in 1965.Theatre, better known as La Poudrière, to produce four plays.The result was a definite success and a clear indication that North Hatley was ready for professional theatre.As a result, the Guild went ahead the next year with the organization of its own company.In 1973 the newly-formed company presented a Noel Coward festival of three plays and an original Quebec play by Jean Barbeau called La Coupe Stainless.Attendance leaped by 120 per cent and the Secretary of State, suitably impressed by the community’s enthusiasm, responded with a $12,000 grant.The next big step for the Piggery came in 1975 when the company mounted a tremendously successful season including Gas Light, Mixed Doubles, Oh Coward and a musical featuring such performers as Gilles Valiquette, Jean Carignan and Alexandre Zelkin.Once again the government responded, and for the first time the Canada Council gave its financial support as well as some much needed advice.Audience figures have grown over the years reaching the 10,000 figure in 1981 and several other interesting editions have been added along the way.The Piggery now features a summer-long art gallery where local artists and craftsmen can display their work and their wares.Another innovation which has proven to be extremely successful, is the introduction of a restaurant which serves pre-theatre country suppers whose justifiable fame has spread throughout the area.Rumor has it however, that pork is definitely not on the menu.To better serve the suppers an outdoor patio was added where patrons can dine in mosquito-free comfort while enjoying the country air and the gorgeous scenery.The changes weren’t all in the area of audience comfort however, and an educational program was added for students studying English as a second language.In 1981 an apprentice program was started, with government support, to train students who hope to follow a career in the theatre.Finally, in 1981, the Piggery took the major step of hiring a full-time Administrative Director, a move seen by many as the most important taken in the last 10 years.With the able guidance of Jane Buss, the new director, the Piggery is off to its best start in many years and with the added blessing of a major bequest from the estate of Jeanette Virgin, wife of Arthur Virgin, the donor of the original building, the future looks good.North Hatley Playh ouse Summefi Smon /9S6 Another precursor of The Piggery was The North Hatley Playhouse whose 1956program is above.By the time this article goes to press, the Piggery will have opened its first production of 1982, Bernard Slade’s Romantic Comedy (see review this paper).Two more productions are planned for the summer — Murder Game by Dan Ross and Talley’s Folly by Lanford Wilson.The changes have been slow for the Piggery Theatre since 1964 but nonetheless dramatic.Afterall, from piglet to
