Alternative Sherbrooke public transport system proposed SHERBROOKE — A committee proposing the creation of a municipal transport commission has made the first step towards letting the Sherbrooke public at large know what's hap pening The one month-old Common Transport Action Committee, comprising 15 local people, held a press conference yesterday to make their proposals known Raynald Frechette, president of the committee, said the primary objective of the group is to furnish the best community transportation service for its users He stated that in many important cities across Canada, a common transport system is considered a public and community service, adding that ordinarily it is a municipal transport commission which handles its administration Mr.Frechette outlined some reasons for proposing a municipal transit system as modernization, efficiency, better organization and that it would be financed by those who profit from it.namely the users While establishing a common transport commission may sound costly, Mr Frechette noted that government (Minister of Municipal Affairs, Ministry of Transport, etc.) grants help finance a large potion of the operating costs of such a commission He cited Quebec City and Montreal as examples for this point He said that the Quebec Urban Community Common Transport Commission obtained a grant from the Minister of Municipal Affairs for 50 per cent for the necessary investment in setting up the organization The city in 1974.for example, charged 35 cents per ticket Users during the year paid out $8.605.424.while Quebec and surrounding municipalities put $2.807.211 into the commission The provincial government allowed $2.900.000 Montreal also charged 35 cents per ticket Users of the MUCTC paid a total of $74.810,267 last year, while the municipalities dished out another $26.000.000 The Quebec* government allowed $10.000.000 Mr Frechette made clear that it was not a question of the committee attacking the present company, but simply as an alternative to the citizens for them to choose He compared the proposed transit commission to health and educational services, which are deemed necessary and are publicly funded The transportation for Sher brookers, especially goldenagers.students and workers, could benefit from the realization of a publicly funded.publicly operated transportation system A copy of the press release, as well as a letter stating the committees purposes and proposals, has been sent to Mayor Jacques O Bready, he said The mayor, along with three councillors, is expected to form a committee to deal with the matter Mr Frechette impressed the fact that his committee wants to work in complete collaboration with city council A public meeting is planned for June 26.though the place for it has not yet been determined A discussion, with Mayor O Bready and community transit specialists sitting as panelists, is also slated on this important, long awaited issue MULE (1000) KING ESI MONTREAL (CP) — A Quebec agriculture department inspector told the organized crime inquiry Thursday that 13 veal carcasses fraudulently marked with the “Canada approved” stamp were found in one of Quebec’s uninspected slaughterhouses during a police raid last year. Two forged stamps made from door knobs had been in the possession of the Ste.Marguerite, Que., slaughterhouse for one year, inspector Jacques Boulet testified at the Quebec Police Commission hearings. The establishment was one of 400 Class B slaughterhouses in Quebec under provincial jurisdiction but not subject to inspection by government officials.Mr Boulet said the stamps.in the slaughterhouse’s possession one year, mispelled the word “approved’’—causing meat to be stamped “Canada approuved.” In a raid last summer on another Class B slaughterhouse near Quebec City, police seized tags indicating meat had been federally inspected at a large Montreal meat firm’s premises, he said The firm was unaware of the use of their tags He said police also confiscated 125 boxes of beef coming from dead or diseased animals on the premises OWN MARKINGS Rene Laflamme, a federal inspector, told the inquiry a federally-inspected meat plant used its own roller brushes to grade meat without an inspector present He said federally inspected carcasses are graded with roller brush markings that indicate different quality cuts Each category is brushed with a special color—red and blue denoting better cuts.Mr.Laflamme said the company sold a low grade of meat as a better quality product and charged an still seemingly cautious and uncertain over the long-term outlook for world oil prices.Trading slowed to its lightest level in more than two months on the New York Stock Exchange The Dow Jones average 8.Prices made one gesture at a rally in mid-morning as President Ford and Secretary of State Henry-Kissinger met with Premier Yitzhak Rabin of Israel for a second day of talks seeking to find approaches toward a more stable Middle East situation. But the buying, which pushed the Dow up about two points at its peak, had almost died out by noon.It appeared the market was dominated by an air of uncertainty over the im plications of a communique issued Wednesday by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The statement said the group had agreed to keep oil prices frozen until Oct.1, but asserted some changes would be made then, with their exact nature to be determined in September.Adding to the weak tone of the session at mid-afternoon was the U S government’s report that retail sales trailed off .8 per cent last week for their second weekly-decline in a row .International oils, which led the way in the morning upswing, turned mixed by the close Gulf Oil, the NYSE NASDAQ composite index was down .61 at 82.99.Among Canadian issues on the New York stock exchange.McIntyre was up 4 to $46 Rising need for nuclear fuels to profit producers An increasing demand for nuclear fuels as an alternative source of energy will profit Canada’s uranium producers, says Levesque.Beau-bien Inc., a Montreal investment firm Although nuclear programs in other countries have been postponed in recent years, Levesque reports in a recent investment letter that the demand for Canadian uranium has increased since 1973.Setbacks in the United States’ nuclear program last year delayed or cancelled construction of nuclear power stations However, despite higher construction costs and licensing and political conflicts, the program progressed By the end of 1974 , 55 stations were generating seven per cent of the total electricity produced in the U.S compared with 40 stations producing 4 4 per cent a year earlier After the Arab oil embargo, Canada’s two largest produc ers, Rio Algom Ltd and Deni son Mines Ltd .received orders for more uranium than the total proven reserves of both companies The federal government, aware of the demand for Canadian uranium, formulated an export policy last September to ensure adequate supplies are retained in the coun try AMOUNT SPECIFIED The policy requires each pro ducer to maintain a specified amount of uranium for Canadian consumption The size of the reserve is based on the company’s supplies in relation to total Canadian reserves The policy states that uranium must be processed to the most advanced stage possible in Canada and that the exported fuel must not sell for less than the price on world markets at the time of delivery.Levesque says Canadian uranium producers and their investors are satisfied with the measures outlined in the policy. The government has shown it will not attempt to control uranium sales to the same extent it dominates oil “In our opinion, the uranium industry is not as politically important as the oil industry, and this provides some guarantee concerning the freedom with which the industry can develop,” the company said.Levesque says Denison Mines and Rio Algom will benefit from the increasing demand but favors Denison’s outlook because uranium sales account for 55 per cent of its revenues compared with 15 per cent of Rio Algom’s earnings NOTICE NEW BUSINESS HOURS
