return of his kidnapped eldest son, Samuel Bronfman II.The demand came in a letter Monday morning, two days after the 21-year-old June graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., telephoned his father at 1:45 a m.Saturday to say he had been abducted by three men while driving to his mother’s house in Purchase, N.Y., after spending the evening here. The youth’s mother is the former Ann Margaret Loeb, daughter of John Loeb, a partner in one of the world’s largest brokerage firms. She was on vacation when the abduction occurred and flew home to join her divorced husband The Seagram’s Co.Ltd., formerly Distiller’s Corp -Seagram’s Ltd., has headquarters in Montreal and is the world’s largest manufacturer and dis- tributor of alcoholic beverages. It had $18 billion in sales last year in 100 countries.Edgar moved to New York from Montreal in 1935 and has since been identified with the family’s American interests. His brother Charles is president of Seagram’s Co.Ltd.in Montreal and also owns the Montreal Expos baseball team.Edgar sped by helicopter to New York where contact with the kidnappers was expected to be made RECEIV ED IN NEW YORK A spokesman told reporters at the entrance to the luxurious estate on Route 100 here that the ransom demand arrived in New York City where Seagram’s U S.division has headquarters in a Park Avenue building.Asked if the ransom demand was for $1 million, he replied “Let’s just say it’s substantial.” He said the family “is going on the presumption that the letter is genuine and that Sam is alive.” The spokesman said the letter was from “a person or persons claiming to be the abductor or abductors. There is no evidence to indicate whether the claim was genuine.” He gave no details except to say “Edgar Bronfman will comply with the written instructions” and that the FBI and local authorities are working on the case.Young Bronfman, named for the founder of the family’s billion-dollar for- tune, was a Williams let-terman in tennis and also played junior varsity bas-keiball.He planned to go to work for Sports Illustrated in September WON ANNULMENT After the Bronfmans were divorced, Edgar then married the former Lady Caroline Townshend from whom he won an annulment last year on the grounds that the marriage had never been consummated. As part of the settlement «he returned a prenuptial gift of $1 million in cash and the deeds to the Yorktown Heights estate. In return he settled $440,000 on her and let her keep gifts of furs and jewelry worth $115,000.Edgar is also a former chairman of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and a president of McGregor Travel Co., recently appeared before an inquiry into Air Canada’s financial affairs to explain an irregular $100,000 payment from the airline Mr McGregor s political “influence’’ McGregor agency was to use “its influence on behalf of Air Canada’s interests .in Quebec with particular regard to impending regulation of travel agents.” Mr.McGregor is currently out of the city but Henry Kissinger Day here Monday, as the U S state secretary flew in to address members of the American Bar Association (ABA) Mr.Kissinger unveiled a compromise proposal for exploitation of the sea establishing a 200-mile offshore economic zone.Mr.Kissinger proposed setting up a new international body within the United Nations with responsibility for exploration of the sea bed The U.S., like Canada, wants to establish a 200-mile offshore economic zone for control of fisheries and mineral resources, Mr.Kissinger said The offshore limits dispute has been running ever since Peru extended its territorial waters to 200 miles When the Law of the Sea conference convened in Caracas last year, Mexico proposed a compromise solution based on the traditional 12-mile territorial limit and a 200 you can eat a healthier diet that gives you more energ\ and still not get fat The problem vMth most programs tor the treatment of obesity is that the> are not designed to treat the real cause We have been engaged in symptomatic treatment It a person is too tat the symptom is attacked b> decreasing the amount he eats rather than treating the underlying cause for the ubesitv Obviously once the symptomatic treatment is stopped the person gets fat again because tne underlying problem has not been treated Some of the problems of obesitN are indeed caused simp ly by overeating and eating the wrong things The fact remains that most people get fat while continuing to eat about the same things they ate in earlier years and while doing about the same amount of physical active ly The real problem in most cases of obesity begins with how many calories you use while you are not doing anything not while you are ex ercising The calories you use at rest under standard conditions (the basal metabolism» decreases as you get older If you eat the same number of calories you ate when you were younger and do the same amount of physical activity you will still get fat Muscle cells are active cells busy all the time, even when you are resting They process food around the energy circle to enable us to have more energy A heavy laborer or well trained athlete does use more calories at rest than a sedentary individual at rest The difference Once you’ve on a diet, stick to it.is important and significant in terms of obesity Fat cells are fairly inactive \s we get older we tend to lose our muscle cells we say our muscle mass decreases There are mans reasons tor tins and certainly one of these is failure to maintain physical activit) of the type that builds and strengthens muscles Sex hormones are important Male hormones tend to stimulate the formation of muscles female hormones do not The average 25 year-old man w ill use 186 more calories a day at rest than a 75-year-old man of comparable height and weight This means the 75 year-old man will need to walk three miles a day just to use the same energy the young man uses resting It s diabolical, but if you don t maintain enough active cells in the body you will need to work harder and harder as you get older just to keep from getting fat You can think of the calorie balance problem as having three parts, not two There is the point of how main calories you eat.calories in Then, there are two ways calories are spent, calories out One is by physical activity and the other is the resting requirement The resting ioquirement is literally the body s overhead What is left is the profit and can be sjH*nt on activity In many people.the overhead factor is the most important A man working in a sedentary office job may use 1500 calories a day as overhead or resting requirements and only 500 a day tor physical activity That's not much While 1 agree it is important to improve the activity program and use more calories, the reason this man starts getting tat all at once is because his overhead requirements start going down, not because he has a further decrease in activity Obviously, an important ap proach to the problem of obesity is to do w hat you can to maintain the use of calories at rest This means trying to maintain our bodies so they are strong and have adequate muscles It doesn't take very long to do strength type exercises You needn’t become exhausted to build and maintain a suitable amount of muscle mass If you diet unwisely, you can decrease the number of active cells you have That means your body is less capable of producing energy for you and your resting calorie requirement will go down It that is already the un deriving problem, you can see the treatment will actually make the problem worse You can see from this jimblem the importance of a combined exercise and diet program in combating or preventing obesity Of course, food intake is im portant in weight control It remains true that the degree of obesity is directly related to the amount of food energy con sumed and the amount of energy used The only shift in emphasis I would like to make in this discussion is that the energy used isn t all just visible physical activity There are numerous ways in dividuals can plan the consump lion of their calories for their diet program One desirable system is to be on a relatively restricted intake one day and eat a normal, nutritious op timal diet on the second day Another approach is to make a limited reduction in the calories, not of sufficient degree to cause a major energy crisis, and stick to it longer while increasing your exercise level Once you've started on a diet, stick to it Cheating on a diet is far more detrimental than most people realize The stimulus that tells us we re hungry comes from a center in the brain It's turned on to make us hungry when the blood glucose falls, then when enough glucose is present in the cells within the appetite center, it shuts off and our hunger stops This center can be reset just as the thermostat in your house can be reset To do this, though, requires a period of training it to a new level (End Senes) Excerpted from last season, has bounded back stronger than ever due to New York’s preoccupation with the energy crisis. With home owners and office workers being asked to keep room temperatures at 68 degrees or lower, layered clothing is the obvious solution for keeping warm.Eleanor Lambert, American fashion co-ordinator said: “Layering is the most urgent worldwide trend in an energy conserving world. It is seen differently in America.Few designers lay thickness over thickness as they are doing in Europe “Here it is more often shape over shape such as the jumper over sweater and blouse, a long tunic over policy, S.Africans will compete TORONTO (CP) — Organ izers of an international track meet decided Monday night to disregard federal government policy and let South African athletes compete The Canadian Masters Association (CMA) reversed an earlier decision on South Africa after athletes from many countries threatened to boycott the World Masters Meet, which begins today The earlier decision to bar the 14 South Africans, who paid their own way to the meet, was made after the federal government said it would withhold a promised $32,000 grant for the event A spokesman for Health Minister Marc Lalonde said the government would cut off funds for any Canadian sports event that included teams from South Africa because Canada “will not support apartheid *’ The week-long amateur meet is expected to draw more than 1,400 athletes over the age of 40 from 32 countries Both the original ruling and Monday’s change of heart brought threats from spokesmen for national teams that they would pull their teams out of the meet A spokesman for the five-member Yugoslavian team said it probably would withdraw after Monday’s decision because his government opposes its athletes competing with South Africans EXPECTS WITHDRAWALS And Sylvester Stein, a British team member, said he doubted all countries would take part after Monday’s ruling Earlier, David Pain, founder of the meet and coach of the 250-member U S team, said he would pull his team out unless the South Africans took part But he said many other athletes might refuse to compete over the issue. The 53-year-old lawyer from San Diego said the Canadian government had no right to ban the athletes because they entered the event as individuals, each paying his own $2,000 air fare and expenses Pain said the athletes might raise the $32,000 among themselves to repay the government grant, but the CMA said it did not know if or how the money would be returned Because of a communications breakdown, it wasn’t until the South Africans arrived here Sunday night that they learned of the government decision, made less than two weeks ago CMA president Don Farquharson announced a 6-5 vote in favor of admitting South Africa at Monday’s meeting."Not a danger to society"—Prosecutor Charges against Forbes dropped MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Dave Forbes of Boston Bruins “behaved in a dangerous manner towards another person,” but he is not a danger to society, said the prosecutor who decided to drop aggravated assault charges brought against Forbes for his conduct in a National Hockey League game “We have now established the principle that an individual’s participation in an athletic contest does not exempt him from prosecution for his conduct,” Hennepin County Attorney Gary Flakne said Monday Forbes, 26, was indicted and tried for allegedly hitting North Stars hockey player Henry Boucha with his hockey stick during a game Jan.4, but the trial ended July 18 in a hung jury Jurors said the final vote had been 9 to 3 in favor of conviction on a lesser charge of simple assault.Flakne said he decided not to retry Forbes because the community is' “extremely split” on the matter of violence in professional sports and that a second jury would probably not be able to reach agreement on a verdict.WARNED CAMPBELL Flakne said he had talked to Clarence Campbell, president of the NHL, and told him that similar acts would not be tolerated. He said Campbell did not say anything about whether NHL rules might be altered Campbell said in a telephone interview from his Cape Cod vacation retreat any warning issued by Flakne who haven’t needed a third base coach in their last three American League games The Tigers bowed to the Texas Rangers and Gaylord Perry 7-0 Monday night, becoming the first Detroit club to suffer three consecutive shutouts— one short of the major league record— and extending their team record to 16 losses in a row The Tigers haven’t scored in 29 innings They managed only five hits off Perry and only Aurelio Rodriguez, who doubled in the eighth inning, made it as far as second base He was promptly cut down trying to take third when a pitch rolled a few feet away from catcher Jim Sundberg The Tigers didn't get a runner past first on Sunday as Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven four-hit them and the last time Schultz saw a familiar face was in the eighth inning of Saturday’s fivehit shutout by Minnesota’s Dave Goltz when Rodriguez made it all the way to third—on an error, wild pitch and an infield out In Monday’s other American League games, Oakland A s edged Boston Red Sox 4-3, Baltimore Orioles blanked Kansas City Royals 4 0.California Angels whipped New York Yankees 8-1 and Minnesota Twins outslugged Milwaukee Brewers 8-7 Detroit manager Ralph Houk stocked his line-up with
