a rifle or shotgun Solicitor-General Warren Allmand and Justice Minister Otto Lang have been given a range of policy choices on gun control and may place proposals before the federal cabinet today.New gun control laws aimed primarily at rifles and shotguns, the weapons used in one-third of the last year’s murders, are expected to be introduced after Parliament reconvenes Oct.14 Statistics Canada, in its annual murder handbook, said Wednesday that “a standard rifle or shotgun” was used in about 190 of last year’s slayings while another 80 deaths were caused by “restricted” weapons such as pistols A whopping 194 of the shootings were under the headings Domestic, immediate Family, Kinship or Common-law The victims often were wives and children Statistics Canada doesn’t go any further in its breakdown but shootings in the home most often involve rifles and shotguns A committee in Mr.All-mand’s department spent much of the summer sur veying gun laws in other countries It learned, among other things, that Kentucky requires firearms to be exposed, pistols must be in a holster that is in view, rifles or shotguns must be carried in the passenger com Trudeau and cabinet meet to wrestle with economy MEACH LAKE.Que (CP) — Prime Minister Trudeau and his soon-to-be-shuffled cabinet, met in the seclusion of the Gatineau Hills for 8*2 hours Wednesday, wrestling with unsettling economic problems and setting priorities for the months ahead “Action on the economy is high on the priority list,” said the casually-clad Mr Trudeau as he emerged from Pesticide blamed FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla (AP) - Doctors are blaming a pesticide called nemagon for the death of a woman who died two days after spraying her lawn Dr Edmund Kielman, medical examiner for Okaloosa County, said nemagon in a spray used by Mrs.R J.Clark, 53, of Fort Walton Beach had “devastated” her liver “This woman was well before using this chemical for 3*2 hours, inhaling it as she used it in a spray form,” Kielman said.“There is a warning on the can that warns buyers that the chemical may be fatal if swallowed or inhaled The manufacturers are well aware of this.’’ Kielman said Mrs Clark’s husband is in hospital, apparently suffering from the same type of poisoning Inside today QUEBEC (CP) — The ex pected announcement of a government solution to the controversy raging over Quebec’s Official Language Act did not materialize Wednesday Education Minister Jerome Choquette had been expected to hold a news conference on the subject after a morning meeting of the cabinet The cabinet did discuss the issue—particularly the situation of about 240 children of Italian parents in the east-end Montreal suburb of St Leonard who have been refused English language schooling through application of the law.But the news conference was postponed indefinitely Under the law, all students whose mother tongue is not English must pass a language proficiency test to be admitted to English-language schools The St Leonard parents have staged several protests because although their children passed the tests they were refused English schooling because of a quota system established by regulations governing the law's application The regulations limit the size of the English-speaking school population in the different school boards to the English enrolment of the previous year. The size of the English-speaking school population cannot be increased without special authorization from the education minister Rumors abound that the solution envisaged by the government might be to place the St Leonard students in French language schools while providing them with improved courses in English as a second language ?MONTREAL (UP) - John Robertson, an announcer with an English-language Montreal radio station who has been conducting a vigorous campaign to abolish Quebec’s Official Language Act.collapsed Wednesday and was admitted to Montreal General Hospital A spokesman for radio station CFCF said Robertson collapsed during an open line talk show which included discussion of the language act A hospital official said Mr Robertson was admitted for an indefinite period because of a recurrence of blood clotting in his leg Mr Robertson’s show will be temporarily taken over by Gordon Sinclair, another critic of the language act George Springate.the Liberal member of the Quebec national assembly for Montreal-Ste Anne, who recently stepped up his long standing opposition to the language legislation and be came a central figure in the current campaign, was admitted to the same hospital Sunday Mr Springate is still in hospital but his doctor has refused to say why he was admitted It was reported he was suffering from fatigue Dief the Chief hits 80 BIRTHS & DEATHS 8 CLASSIFIED 16 for a permit system aimed at delaying purchases of rifles or shotguns, and possibly ammunition ENTAILS CHECK If this system is adopted, a buyer would have to go to police for a permit, then wait while a police check was made. This might at least give those who now buy in a fit of depression or temper for the purpose of killing someone a chance to cool down It would give police a chance to weed out persons known to be unstable or violent Prime Minister Trudeau last vyeek all but ruled out a resistration system, which involves registering a firearm with an official agency after buying it.He said that such a system would not have prevented Michael Slobodian from shooting a teacher and another student, then killing himself, at a Brampton.Ont., high school last spring Slobodian a teenager, had not given any sign of trouble before the shooting and had owned the firearm for some time—meaning that a permit would not have prevented the killings either Depositories for all guns apparently have
