fciSS ¦¦¦ *-* "^Sai € -v.v Record photo by Pern' Benti V » ~^Ép - CWL1S l,l> * k.^ Fiiday IK * ' -j u L eiii &•*%* à y' 2—TOWNSHIPS WEBK—FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1985 Chianti: A good buy at $6.65 Wine Just when you thought the world was going to the dogs something turns up to brighten even the darkest of days.On a recent trip to Montreal, I thought I’d drop in on the Maison des Vins and check out the shelves for new and hopefully affordable listings.Unfortunately, it was also a Monday and the specialty shop was shuttered.Not to be put off, I nimbly dodged the madness that passes for traffic on de Maisonnneuve and headed into the bowels of The Bay to visit another SAQ outlet.Despite what you may think, in the world of wine ali things are not created equal ^As a matter of fact, both Montreal and Quebec City see wines that are not readily available in the hinterland.Two of these are perhaps particularly worthy of note.The first is a Chianti produced under the name of Pucci.This 1983 version of the famous Tuscan wine comes in the traditional wicker flask and contains a full litre.At $6.65 per bottle it is a good buy for anyone planning a dinner party where a single bottle is not enough and two bottles a bit too much.Garnet red in color, it has a surprisingly delicate nose for a Chianti and yet provides reasonable body and a favorable af- Bits By TIMOTHY BELFORD l (JIM A f » * Pucci’s Chianti is fine for meat or pasta.tertaste.Priced as it is, slightly lower than any comparable Chianti, it would serve well with any of the traditional pasta dishes or with a variety of red meats.The second wine comes from the increasingly popular Cellier du Monde firm, located in Franklin Centre, Quebec.It is once again Italian but this time a white Soave.This Soave Frutto d’Oro as it is called, contains 11 per cent alcohol and is representative of the Soave type, if somewhat thinner than some of the better brands.The wine itself is a pale yellow but lacks proper filtering and is thus mildly clouded with fine bits of sediment.Don’t let this put you off however, since it has a refreshing, tart aftertaste and quite a pleasant acidity which makes it a decent aperitif.At $5.30 per bottle, it is also a full $3 cheaper than the Bolla brand.It must be noted however, that the Bolla version is a better wine with considerably more finesse and character.Nevertheless, Soave Frutto d’Oro is a good buy for the money.Last but not least, a wine worth trying that can be found locally is the Mommessin white which sells for a mere $4.65 a bottle.Not as good as the red version, it is still an incredibly good buy considering the price of so many of the ‘everyday’ wines presently available.Cheers! some of the classiest Québécois films in years.Although Rofekamp has been in Canada less than four years, he and his company, Films Transit Inc.— first of the Netherlands and now of Montreal — apparently have the trust of Quebec filmmakers.As a foreign sales agent, he has virtually all the new, top-drawer Québécois films.His product lineup includes Micheline Lanctot’s Sonatine, a possible nomination for a foreign-language Oscar; Lea Pool’s La Femme de 1’hotel, nominated for France’s Cesar; and Andre Me-lancon’s La Guerre des tuques, a children’s movie that has become a box-office bets MONTREAL (CP) — By most standards, 1984 was a less-than-banner year for the Canadian dollar in relation to its U.S.counterpart.It lost almost five cents overall and hit an all-time low at one point of 74.86 cents U.S.But many economists are cautiously optimistic some of that lost ground will be recovered this year without sacrificing all of the strength the Canadian dollar enjoys elsewhere.The dollar began 1984 worth over 80 cents U.S., and went downhill from there, closing on Dec.31 at 75.66 cents.It hovered around 75.5 cents last month.Analysts say they expect the American dollar, which soared in 1984 on the strength of high U.S.interest rates, to cool off this year.John Hartmann, Quebec regional vice-president of Guardian Trust, said the strength of the U.S.dollar is having drawbacks south of the border.“The dollar is becoming a big drag on the American economy because export-related industries are suffering,” said Hartmann.“It (the U.S.dollar) is also emerging as a threat to domestic industries which are beginning to struggle against competition from cheap imports.“If the U.S.dollar does weaken against other currencies, as expected, the Canadian dollar will rise in tandem with these currencies,” he said.But the increase won’t be dramatic, warned Hartmann, who predicted the dollar won’t break through 77 cents.WON’T RISE AS MUCH “Because it is more closely tied to the U.S.dollar, it won’t rise asmuch as other currencies, which means it will depreciate slightly vis-a-vis those currencies.” Another economist who expects the dollar to advance slightly is Elizabeth Bigsby, senior international econo- mist at the Royal Bank.“The dollar should trade above 76 cents for most of the year,” said Bigsby.“The U.S.dollar is currently overvalued and there is a feeling that it must lose ground at some point.” The Bank of Montreal said in its annual economic outlook that the dollar should trade between 75 and 77 cents.But even if it does lose ground against pound sterling and the French franc, it will remain strong enough to make Britain and France attractive vacation bets for Canadians.Hussein Sharawi, regional travel manager of Eastern Canada for American Express Canada Inc., said transatlantic travel to Europe will continue to improve this year, with Britain and France again the most popular destinations.France Durocher of British Airways said passenger traffic to Britain in January is up 10 per cent over last year.“The increase.is definitely related to the favorable exchange rates for Canadians,” says Durocher.POUND DROPS At this time last year, the pound was worth about $1.75 compared with its present value of $1.48.Last summer, $900 bought $500.Now, $500 can be had for about $750.Preliminary figures show that close to 600,000 Canadians, a record, visited Britain last year.Roger Johnson, director of public relations at the British Tourist Authority in Toronto, believes that figure will be bettered this year.“We’ve had a lot more enquiries this year from people wanting to go to Britain and there’s no denying that the weak pound is a major reason,” explained Johnson.An Air France official said more Canadians are expected to visit France this year because of the favorable exchange rate on the franc.\ Townships teams of the past If you’re an old-time Townships sports buff, then Coati-cook’s Beaulne Museum is well worth a visit these days.Located at 96 Union St., the museum is currently featuring an photographic exhibit of past local sports teams from hockey to baseball.At the modest admission fee of $2, the exhibit is billed as a chance for older Township-pers to recover lost years and relive old memories.Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m.(until May IS).The exhibit runs until Once upon a time, when John Wooden's UCLA basketball teams were larger than life, the annual appearance of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Pauley Pavilion would send normally placid Southern Californians into fits of hatred.For if their beloved Bruins’ record was imperfect, in all likelihood the blemish had been sustained earlier in the year in South Bend.NBC college basketball analyst Al McGuire missed most of those Bruin/Irish encounters, busy as he was coaching his Marquette Warriors.The seven losses his I977 national championship squad suffered before tournament time exceeded the combined loss total of the three previous champs — N.C.State, UCLA and Indiana — by six.To have timed his team’s peak so perfectly was inspirational; to have ushered in the age of parity was incidental."t think dynasties are an asset to sports,” says McGuire, not sounding anything like a Brooklyn native."We have to have idols and we have to have the have-nots going after them.But it's gotten hard to run a dynasty Look at UCLA.They won't recover for another decadn."Changing coaches has been their main problem," continues McGuire."They've had five coaches in less than 10 years since Coach Wooden retired.I don't think the players ever knew who they were playing for."
