fdelay, June 14,1985 Picasso prelude?Page 5 •ik'i I Kl 111 *K i n 2—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 1985 Piggery hosts benefits Rosés can also please palate While making money is the obvious goal of any business, including theatres. The Piggery of North Hatley is more aware than many of its sister theaters that co-operation, like charity, begins at home.As part of its regular season, The Piggery will offer four benefit nights that will allow local institutions a chance to share in not only the good will but the profits. This year The North Hatley Community Centre, the Sherbrooke Hospital, the North Hatley Curling Club and the regional Special Olympics Committee will all stage “theatre nights” as part of their fund-raising activities. Each group involved, has purchased an entire night’s tickets, offered to them at cost price by The Piggery. In turn, the groups hope to sell their tickets to members of the general public at an increased price, with the difference going to the treasury of the group involved. The first benefit night will be held on Wednesday, July 3, when the members of the North Hatley Community Centre encourage you to attend a performance of the English-language premier of Mommy by Louisette Dussault.Mommy, starring Christine Moy- nihan, is a warm-hearted and moving look at motherhood in all its aspects.Internationally acclaimed, Mommy is a one-woman tour de force that has played to audiences throughout Quebec, Europe and Africa. On Friday, July 26, the Sherbrooke Hospital Auxiliary will be hosting a theatre night that will feature What I Did Last Summer by A.R.Gurney Jr.A tale of youth, dreams and inevitable choices, What I Did Last Summer will star Joan Orenstein whose credits include the recent CBC critical triumph, Charlie Grant’s War.The final play of the season, Angel of Death by Raymond Storey, will “be split” between two organizations when the North Hatley Curling Club hosts a theatre benefit, night on Tuesday, August 13 and the Special Olympics Committee hosts a similar night on Wednesday, August 14.Angel of Death is a suspense-thriller, the type that has proved so popular with Piggery audiences in the past and is guaranteed to keep you guessing until the very end.Anyone wishing to support any of these benefit nights by purchasing tickets to the plays is asked to call The Piggery box ofice at 842-2191 for further information.Country music festival Sunday June 16 sees the first Country Music Festival at Centennial Theatre, a day of the best of the Townships’ country music, starting at 2 p.m.in the afternoon and continuing into the evening.Four bands will appear, offering the public a wide view of local country styles.Weekend Express, Gibson Creek, Ramblin’ Fever and Brian Lowry & The Country Kings represent the full range of country music in the Townships, and hail from points as diverse as Cowansville and Thetford Mines.Weekend Express and Gibson Creek are of the “new school” of country music, in which the guitar work is inspired from rock & roll and the drum beat is heavier.Weekend Express boasts the excellent voice of Michelle O’Neil as lead singer.Gibson Creek, formerly the back-up band for country favourites Jerry & Joanne, counts Mike Goodsell of the popular Big Foot band and other talented musicians from the Border area in the group. The Country Kings will be coming to Centennial from Thetford Mines where their brand of old style country music has gained great popularity over the past 15 years.Ramblin’ Fever produces “good, down-to-earth dance music”, according to member Steve Power, which should encourage those present the 16th to dance on a cleared space in front of the stage. The Country Music Festival will be a lively day at Centennial Theatre and marks the end of activities for the 1984/85 season.Tickets to the day-long event are only $5.00 and can be ordered through the Centennial Theatre Box Office open 1-5 p.m.daily, Mon.-Fri., at 819-563-4966.Beverages and snacks will be sold CENTENNIAL THEATRE LENNOXVILLE COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL with the best in the Townships Weekend Express Ramblin' Fever Gibson Creek Brian Lowry & The Country Kings Dancing! by Ken Chowder (FITZHENRY & WHITESIDE): $21.95, 231 pp.At first glance the plot of Ken Chowder’s third provocative novel appears to be just another menage a trois complication carved out of the absurdities of contemporary living. But the woman who is the subject of the book named for her, Jadis Lambert, is just one of the remarkable things about this young American novelist’s puzzling fictional world. As the book opens, Jadis’s unforgettable husband Egg (a nickname for Edward) Lambert has returned home from his toy shop to discover his wife has apparently left him.His consternation takes several forms as he turns to familiar neighbours for solace, but he can’t bring himself to articulate clearly the full impact of Jadis’s desertion.JADIS KEN CHOWDER « a a * a a a [a a.a is_L au*.».aajra Memories come flooding in, making each page of Chowder’s novel into an exercise in the power of nostalgia and the way in which the past impinges on the present. For example, Egg Lambert, in his despair over Jadis’s exit, turns to the girl he grew up With and had been in love with on two separate occasions.Victoria (Tory) is a half-Indonesian, voluptuous, dark-haired beauty who is living as an editor-concubine with an aging zoologist named professor F J.Quammie that Tory calls “Boopy”.When Egg descends on Tory and her septuagenarian lover, they rekindle their long-dormant relationship, with the motivating fact of Jadis’s elopement momentarily forgotten. In all, Egg makes three visits to women who have been important influences in his life — another old flame, Annie Gallagher Bat-tistoni is married to an absolute boor named Ronnie, has a houseful of children in Washington, D.C., and reveals to her teen years lover that “marital problems” is a redundant term. The utter chaos of Annie’s marriage is so shocking that Egg cannot even bring himself to reveal that Jadis’s departure is the reason for his visit. After his tour with Tory and her partially deaf, semi-senile mate in McClellanville, South Carolina, and a brush with an alligator and near miss with a lunging cot- and Berger make a literary banquet Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY tonmouth snake in a swamp.Egg flies to take refuge with his mother in Florida.Rena Lambert is another of the oddities of characterization that make Jadis such an unexpected delight, and no sooner are we introduced to her than Tory reunites with Egg, they return to Dobb’s Ferry in suburban New York City, only to have the missing, enigmatic Jadis decide to return.Jadis’s arrival plunges this novel into some absurd sets of circumstance, and Egg’s struggle to decide between the woman he is married to, and the lover he has taken from the haunting shadows of his past, creates an interesting dilemma.Jadis is written in highly charged, poetic prose, and it offers humorous and serious insights into marriage, contemporary living and the fabric of American life.Nowhere by Thomas Berger (DE-LACORTE PRESS- DOUBLEDAY): $19.95, 190 pp.After narrowing his satirical focus on American institutions such as the Indian (Little Big Man) and neighbouring families (Neibors), Thomas Berger broadens his vision to take some clever cuts against just about every facet of society with Nowhere.Ostensibly a spy thriller, Berger readers of Nowhere will be prepared for the spoofing of this genre and the Swiftian technique of setting established human practices up to ridicule. When i * *2 Russel Wren’s New York City walkup apartment is bombed by the Sebastiani Liberation Front, he ends up on a mission to gather information in the tiny principality of Saint Sebastian, a mythical kingdom in the centre of old Europe.Hired by an operative from “the Firm”, Wren discovers a country that affords Berger endless satirical swipes at the excesses and foibles of contemporary society.Saint Sebastian is an absurd state that might have been a setting for a Marx Brothers movie.Ruled by a powerless, gourman-dising monarch, it has designa- ted all blondes to be useless to society, and decided that movie theatres will be the sole educational resource for the young. Here, fed a steady diet of American films of the 30’s and 40’s, the youth learn the jargon of gangster films, cowboy flicks and brainless musical comedies.Writers in the land are kept in guarded enclaves where they spend their days savaging each other in print and verbally. In this slapstick plot, Berger uses Wren as a sounding board as he bounces all manner of criticism of society off the naive investigator.Told in a stilted, formal style, Berger’s story is a perplexing one, with a serious purpose beneath the comedy that develops in this ironic treatment of the ideal utopian society gone haywire.RECORD REVIEWS Hooters NERVOUS NIGHT (COLUMBIA) With the population density concentrated on Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a home town favourite band can nevertheless rack up some very impressive numbers.Take the Hooters, for instance, a burgeoning-into-national-greatness band that managed to generate 26 million postcards for a Philly radio station School Spirit contest. One listen to the pulsating, churning tracks on the Hooters’ NERVOUS NIGHT shows that the enthusiasm being won by this band is no fluke. Not entirely strangers to rock, Hooters’ writers Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian were in on the writing, playing and arranging of Cyndi Lauper’s smash l.p.SHE’S SO UNUSUAL.But the American rock ’n’ roll of the Hooters seems to be open to many other influences — there’s the reggae rock of the current single, "All You Zombies”, which is also supported by a very distinctive video.Opening vamps to several tracks are reminiscent of some Brit rock put out by a short-lived, excellent outfit called Unicorn, and the utilization of the mando- lin sound makes for interesting diversions from usual instrumentation. The first single to provoke interest in the Hooters is the lead song on side one — "And We Danced” — and this track, plus “Hanging On A Heartbeat” features some Caribbean rhythms from David Uosikkinen and fine singing from three-fifths of the Hooters.Just when it appears the Hooters like to play around with changing tempoes, they hit the decks with all their rock motors vibrating on the driving track “South Ferry Road” But no matter which track you listen to on this Hooters album there’s a sure feeling that this is only a beginning.Sting THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES (A&M) Perhaps it began with 10 c.c., the careful manoeuvering to work the sound and feel of the Caribbean island rhythms into commercial pop rock.Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and even folk guru Bob Dylan have jumped on the bandwagon — Dylan’s release EMPIRE BURLESQUE has utilized the rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare in an attempt to give him the most critically accepted album since 1975's BLOOD ON THE TRACKS.Police’s Sting chooses the reggae route exclusively on his solo album, even though the British band the Police has always been on the leading edge of experimental tempoes and inflections from the islands.THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES has tunes that sound much like the standard Police fare — such as “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” which leds off the album. But it segues into “Love Is The Seventh Wave”, as funky a bit of reggae this side of Bob Marley’s tombstone. On “Russians”, there are both ideological and musical influences combined on a pretty piece of music that belies the awesome dread of its subject.Using a theme of Sergei Prokofiev’s, Sting recalls Krushchev’s bold declaration to Kennedy and the Americans — “we will bury you ”.Sting here is hoping that the “same biology / Regardless of ideology” will “save my little boy from Oppen-heimer’s deadly toy”.The threat of nuclear oblivion in that song is but prelude to the stark images of “Children’s Crusade”, a lament for the young men of England “Strewn on the fields of Belgium and France / Poppies for young men, death’s bitter trade / All of those young lives betrayed”! Those same poppies which symbolized the shameful waste of young lives in the “last” Great War from a symbolic bridge to the present, as Sting takes us on a midnight jaunt through Soho, London in 1984, where he views “Fixing in doorways, opium slaves / Poppies for young men, such a bitter trade”.This control of images and the informed, incisive nature of Sting’s world view, make him one of the most challenging of the young artists performing the avant-garde rock which also manages to encompass hordes of rabid young fans.Whether he’s contemplating the ecological consequences of nuclear waste in “We Work The Black Seam”, or tripping the light horrorific on “Moon Over Bourbon Street” (inspired by Anne Rice’s “Interview With A Vampire”), Sting’s music is always laced with food for thought, his albums requiring that the listeners have something substantial between the earphones.THEATRE North Hailey.Quebec Opens June 27 MOMMY Written by Louisette Dussault Starring Christine Moynihan translated by Michael Sinelnikoff directed by Louisette Dussault music by John Roby costumes by Pat Flood lighting by Léo Lagassé produced by Les Productions Dupauvel Inc.JUNE 27 — JULY 13 Tues.-Fri.8;30 p m.Wed.Matinée 2:00 p.m Sat.6:00 & 9:30 p m.Countty Suppers (Reservations only) Or Write Box 390, North Hatley, Quebec, JOB 2C0 819-842-2191 TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY.JUNE 14, 1985-5 Sutton exhibit shows Picasso influence By Merritt Clifton SUTTON — Sisters May and Helen Kelly take over the Arts Sutton gallery through June 23 with an exhibit owing heavily to Pablo Picasso.Although Picasso isn’t mentioned or even alluded to in any of the Kelly captions, the show could even be considered a warm-up for the Picasso exhibit running from June 21 to November 10 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.Should anyone doubt Picasso’s impact upon generations of painters who have followed him, just glance at how both Kel-lys compose in cubes and triangles.Helen Kelly's works in particular call to mind Picasso’s ‘blue’ and ‘pink’ periods. Her female figures are much less distorted than Picasso’s, as if to assert a feminist argument, yet her backgrounds and poses acknowledge her inspiration.Curiously enough, the Kellys Arts Sutton gallery switches to antiques By Merritt Clifton SUTTON — If you're looking for a blunderbuss or a foghorn, drop by the Arts Sutton rear gallery.Antiques are in, artisans are out, and it’s a trade both parties welcome. The artisans’ cooperative that formerly occupied the space has moved up the street to a location behind the Cafe Mocador.Arts Sutton director Corinne Spiegal has moved her antique shop from there into the Arts Sutton building, and has acquired a new partner - Arts Sutton founder Eve Gossage.“The Cafe Mocador location was too ‘flea market’ for anti- ques,” Gossage says.“Here we’re in a more refined environment, if Sutton can be said to have a refined environment.” The antique shop contains the usual range of items, from old horse yokes to jewelry, but has a European rather than country accent. The current eye-stoppers are the brass blunderbuss, a cap-and-ball pistol, and the foghorn, also made of brass, much resembling a fire extinguisher.Humble appearance belies awesome power.“Yes, it works”, Gossage assures visitors.“My God, don’t set it off in here.Everybody wants to try it, and if you do, we’ll all be deafened.I’llusethe blunderbuss on you.” The foghorn is priced at $475.BRASSERIE CANARIENNE *T- ¦ A*» I 1375 Sherbrooke St.• Magog Now open.- 843-5585 RECEPTION ROOM JJZl COMPLETELY RENOVATED lobster Festival 2 lobsters $750 for,.¦ opening ( Table d’Hote Soup or tomato juice 8 choices of meals starting from $495 llkssert: Carrot cake or home-made pies Tea - coffee — herb tea f our Café Terrasse La Brasserie Canadienne, that*s for me Picasso’s influence is clearly seen tree stump.seem to have come to their ‘Picasso’ period by following the same sequence of development that modern painting itself did.A few years ago they painted fairly conventional semi-realistic sugar-shacks and landscapes: art as practiced pre-photography.From there they evolved into impressionism. Now May, venturing farthest, seems almost ready to open an expressionist post-Picasso period. Her most striking work is a metre-square closeup of a tree trunk, some distance off the ground, looming, threatening.Somewhere beyond, one senses, this Kelly may venture beyond skilled imitation into her own personal visions.in Helen Kelly portrait's (left).May Kellly (above) with 'looming' There are no sugar-shacks, quaint barns, or views of the Bolton Pass at Arts Sutton for the next two weeks.Instead, there are two very promising young painters who are not afraid to go inside the methods and mediums of the great, to understand their contributions thoroughly before going farther.Their works have always been colorful; At least that's what female servicemen are telling a a parliamentary committee on equal rights. The problem, says National Action Committee on the Status of Women spokesperson Carole Wallace, is that Jane (Jill) Gyorgy has come up with a novel way to end this year’s season and is staging a day-long, four-band Country and Western Music Festival for this Sunday beginning at 2 p.m.Jane scoured the Eastern Townships, it looks like, to come up with bands representing as diverse an area as possible and has signed on the traditional sounds of The Country Kings from the Thetford Mines area, Weekend Express from the Lennoxville-Sherbrooke region, Gibson Creek from down around the border, and finally, from Cowansville way, Ramblin’ Fever. Now, these four bands represent a pretty good cross-section of country music from the classics represented by The Country Kings to the complicated orchestrations favoured by Weekend Express and the punchy, rock-influenced Gibson Creek.Ramblin’ Fever prefers to stick with good, down to earth dance music, so this just about covers it.This gathering sounds like it could be a lot of fun, and with tickets going at only $5 a head, you really can’t lose.Hosting the event is CKTS 90 country DJ Bad Bob Boisclair.Quebec folk legend Richard Séguin with his five-piece band are presently playing at Le Vieux Clocher in Magog and offer concerts tonight and tomorrow at 8:30.Séguin was one of a handful of artists that helped usher Quebec music into an age of confidence and maturity that earned international stardom for several Quebec musicians — including Séguin.Concerts start at 8:30 and tickets are $10.At the Festival lac Massawippi this Sunday morning at the St-James Church in East Hatley at 11 a m., a quartet made up of violinist Guylaine Grégoire, cellist Emmanuel Tremblay, alto France Unsworth, and Christine Zaza on second fiddle offer a free musical concert for one and all.A delightful way to spend a Sunday morniong, the concerts are followed by a buffet lunch sponsored by the St.James Church. It’s the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival weekend and those of you who like jazz should mosey on down to the scene of the action to check it all out. There’s jazz at literally every street comer, bar, park etc.with acts too numerous to mention going on all weekend. There are also lectures and workshops going on all through the weekend. The best way for you to get a complete rundown is to stop at the Flynn Theatre when ya gets there, but you can sort of plan ahead if you call the Flynn at l-(802) 862-5121 or The Mayor's Arts Council at l-(802) 658-9300 At Lennoxville’s Georgian Hotel this weekend — Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday evening — is Idle Hands with an excellent repertoire of meticulously played rock and roll.It should be interesting to watch Bob Boisclair scooting between this gig an the one at Centennial Sunday evening — I hope he's in shape. At the FL Hideaway, Calvin must have paid off his insurance policy because in addition to the Hall Brothers this weekend, who always pack ’em in, Saturday will see a repetition of Beat the Clock beginning at 8:30.Over at Bury’s Salle Jean-Paul the good sounds of Bourbon and Lace featuring Debbie Drummond and Bob Drew will be on hand for the Saturday evening bash. The Del Monty down in Rock Island has brought in an Ontario band by the name of Clear Cut this weekend and I’m told these guys have a high-tech all-out stage show guaranteed to dazzle.Up a bit and to the right in Stanstead, The Maples has the good sounds of Tennessee Riders for Friday and Saturday nights for the month of June.Good lively country music. In Ayer’s Cliff at the Shady Crest it’s Sid Aulis and the Konrordes all month from Thursday evenings until Sunday afternoons.Over at the Motel Bretagne in Waterville, it’s the other Aulis Steve and his group Country Fever providing C and W and rockabilly tunes to liven things up.On Sunday afternoon the team of Rosaire and Renaud take over with their renditions of country classics. The word is out on The Second Annual Glen Sutton Summer Music Festival, which might sound pretentious at first, but until you’ve seen the place — keep quiet.Set in as beautiful a scene as one could hope to find, the Auberge Glen Sutton has an excellent selection of bands for the summer weekends, beginning tonight and tomorrow with the Chicago blues sounds of Raisin Cain. For more info on the goings on at the Glen, call (514) By MICHAEL McDEVITT 538-7540 for the complete rundown.Next weekend —The Hall Brothers.Over in Mansonville, at La Rougette, the sounds of Cedar Creek keep ’em comning back for more.On the local jazz scene, pianist Marc Bolduc and bas-sman Jacques Jobin provide the tunes at the Hovey Manor each Friday evening in the Tap Room beginning at 9 p.m.These guys are a nice, easy listening duo with an awful lot of class.Jacques Beauchamps and Normand Bouchard carry on their outdoor Jazz on Jazz concerts each weekday afternoon from 5 p.m.to 7 at the Café du Palais. This also just happens to coincide with happy hour, so try not to complain too much, will ya?Finally, on a completely different planet is the jazz-fusion group UZEB (see page 3), an outfit that has to be one of the very best of its kind in the world.A Quebec band through and through, UZEB is preparing for a big concert at Montreal’s Théâtre St-Denis by returning to familiar ground at Magog’s Le Vieux Clocher next weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday.Exhibitions/Events The Cirque du Soleil circus is still in Sherbrooke for the weekend, so if you haven’t had a chance to get up to the Sports Palace complex to catch this show, you might want to keep it in mind. This is a young company in the oriental tradition, which means its main emphasis is on human talent rather than the torturing of animals.A good outing for the whole family and relatively inexpensive.Shows are at 8 p.m.tonight, Saturday and Sunday, with matinées at 2 p.m.on Saturday and Sunday. In the exhibition department, the Arts-Sutton Gallery in Sutton is featuring a new exhibit by sisters May and Helen Kelly for the next three weekends.Mikey has not seen this show hisself, but accentuate one theme — Canadian archaeology.D< spite what many of us think, there is more to archaeology in this country than Mikey’s spring cleaning turning up remnants of last Hallowe’en’s pizza or Tim Belford combing his beard for clues to last night’s board meeting.Oh yes! The two exhibits at the Marcotte centre, called Archaeology and Rues des Enfants Trouvés, take a look at the serious side of this most patience-requiring of disciplines and at the same time offer some direct reminders of our not-so-distant past. The centre is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 12:30 until 5 except on Thursdays when it stays open until 9.Admission is $1.Of visually artistic interest up at the Orford Arts Centre this summer are an exhibition of British prints featuring some 30 well-known contemporary British artists as well as an exhibit of Traditional Lettish Art — including carvings and a terrific assemblage of costumes.Something else that’s new these days is a weekly reading of stories called Tales told Aloud held each Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.in the Lennoxville Municipal Library. The busy Miss Jennifer Epps gathers the little tykes around her for out-loud readings of favourite children’s stories in either English or French, and a request sheet is available for those particularly special stories you might want to hear. This is a real good idea, this, and Mikey hopes it catches on.Tidbits: Throughout the summer months, the Quebec Israeli Arts Council is sponsoring an exhibit of IsraeU Art at the Café Côte Jardin at 5514 Queen Mary Road in Montreal. This show offers a number of recent pieces (as opposed to Reese's Pieces) from some of Israel’s finest artists. The show is open from 11:30 a m.until midnight each and every day.Movies Lady Hawke represents the new film to come to Sherbrooke this week down at the Cinémas Carrefour, and they say this one is a pretty good little fantasy adventure film.Starring Matthew Broderick, this film has earned a lot of rave reviews for its treatment of a classic fantasy romance tale.Down at the Cinéma Capitol the mighty Sylvester Stallone tries to rewrite the history of the Vietnam war in Rambo and fails miserably. The saddest thing about this movie is the state of mental opacity it indicates on the part of the American psyche (not to mention our own, slavish imitators that we are) — with the whole country trying to cope with its shameful and deserved defeat at the hands of the Vietnamese. You wonder why the Nicaraguans are worried? No change over at the Cinéma Princesse in Cowansville with both The Goonies, a Steven Spielberg fantasy-adventure backed up by the silly Vision Quest.Down at the Merrill’s Showplace Theatres in Newport, Vt.this week, the line-up looks like a condensed version of everywhere else — The Goonies, the gooniest, Rambo and Lady Hawke. unusual man.On Thursday at 9, CTV offers The Phenomenon of La Cage, a documentary which explores the problems and barriers which almost prevented La Cage au Folles from becoming the smash Broadway FI.— Ask anyone who visits Florida’s Lee Island Coast what makes this area so special, and they will most likely say that it is the scenic beaches with their bounty of multi-colored shells. The lure of that unsurpassed shelling experience has brought wide-spread acclaim to the area from visitors and press, alike. Each year, thousands of tourists try their luck at the beach searching for sea treasures. Some even don miner’s hats with lights so they can continue searching at night.Recently Sanibel and Captiva Islands were rated among the top 10 beaches in the U.S.by Good Housekeeping magazine. And Lee County’s beaches have long been considered third best in the world for shelling, with more varieties found here than anywhere else in North America. These barrier islands yield more than 400 species of shells, from the commonplace scallop and clam to the exotic — tulips, olives, fragile paper fig shells — and the rarest, the junonia. It is truly one of the few places in the world where a man can make a living as a shelling charter captain, with many of the area’s marinas and resorts, offering shelling charters. One such entrepreneur is Mike Fuery, captain of the custom-built “Gray Pelican”, who offers fishing and shelling charters out of ’Tween Waters Marina on Captiva Island. For years he has guided shellers to promising beaches and sandbars.“The area is a true shelling paradise and it is possible for one to find 50-60 different kinds of shells here,” Fuery explains.“No offshore reef breaks up shells.Instead, the Gulf is just one flat, shallow area with lots of warm and sunny weather encouraging shells to grow.” In fact, even Sanibel Island’s shape encourages shelling, he added.“While many islands face north-west, Sanibel runs more in an east-west direction. Its boomerang shape slows down the shells and brings them onto the beach.” But you also can find great shells at any of the less populated areas of these barrier islands, especially at Cayo Costa Island, noted for its starfish, conchs and sand dollars. On his charter, Fuery walks the beach, pointing out good finds. What makes a shell valuable is not how much it costs in a gift shop, but how difficult it is to find. The brown speckled junonia, which only costs approximately $12 at most area gift shops, is one shell that Fuery, himself, has yet to find in all his years of shelling. And while he says it is perhaps the most difficult shell to find on Florida’s barrier islands, he admits that one of the area’s longtime shelling customers found two of the rare shells right in front of Sanibel’s West Wind Inn.So, you just never know.Fuery encourages his charter customers to avoid picking up the large, live shells and strongly supports Sanibel’s resolution establishing a limit of two live shells per person.“Those of us who truly love shelling can’t tolerate the killing of live shells,” he writes in his “Captain Mike Fue-ry’s Shelling Guide”.When you consider the 10 to 12 years needed for a shell to reach maturity, there is no reason to deplete the live shell supply, says Fuery.Instead, he directs customers towards the smaller, dead shells which are more vividly-colored and make better collectors’ items.Along with informal and amusing descriptions of available shells in the barrier islands, Fuery’s guidebook also offers helpful tips on collecting. The first thing you need is a tide table, he advises. You will want to plan your selling around the low phase of the tide, which allows more beach area on which to shell.Try to get to the less populated beaches approximately an hour before low tide and work until an hour after. It’s also important to know where to walk on the beach, according to Fuery.A good spot is the shell line, just where the highest waves stop as they come upon the beach. This is where groups of shells come up and are reshuffled by each wave.It saves digging to find the great shells, Fuery says. The other good spot is that slight drop in the surf line, just where gentle waves break before rolling up on the beach. While this area is only available when weather permits, it usually holds the most — and finest — shells.Above all, shelling requires patience, Fuery reminds. No one area is good all the time, and no collection worth looking at was ever found in one outing. But, as Fuery admits, there is something MATERIAUX ORFORD INC Be sure to visit keeps people coming back time after time for more. The longer you are on Florida’s Lee Island Coast, the more you will notice how contagious this enthusiasm for shelling can be, he said.At some of the islands' inns there is a delightful custom of ringing a ship’s bell during the dinner hour to pay tribute to the lucky collector who has made a rare find.Fuery admits to starting shelling out of self-defense.“It’s a mania here.If you don’t have a shell collection, people think you’re crazy.” But why the excitement? What exactly is the special lure of the shelling? One woman hardly bothered to raise her head from the sand, when asked what attracted her to shelling.“It gives me a reason to walk the beach and prevents me from lying around in the sun getting fat.I can socialize with my friends, while adding to my collection,” she said.As she gradually moved away, ending over every once in a while in the famous “Sanibel Stoop” to gather a shell, she murmured, “One just never knows what interesting things the sea will bring in.” For information on where to stay and things to do on Florida’s Lee Island Coast, contact Janette Hunt of the Lee County Tourist Development Council, ai
