Ridge Boys a unique style By Gwen Dambrofsky CRAVEN, Sask.(CP) — It is hard to imagine a more disparate quartet of individuals than the Oak Ridge*Boys. There's fast-talking, T-shirted Joe Bonsall, who would look at home strutting down the mean streets of any major city; hulking, silent William Lee Golden, the archtypical mountain man; enigmatic Richard Ster-ban, with his dark leading-man good looks and seductive bass voice; and Duane Allen, who looks and sounds like any average, middle-American business executive. Two are eastern U.S.coast natives — Sterban from New Jersey, Bonsall from Philadelphia. Two hail from the deep south — Allen was born in Texas and Golden in Alabama. But when the four get on stage, as they did before 70,000 cheering fans at the recent Big Valley Jamboree in this sleepy village 30 kilometres north of Regina, they blend together as easily as the barbershop-style harmonies that mark their unique musical style.WON AWARDS Since the Oak Ridge Boys switched from gospel music to country in 1975, the band has racked up some of the most impressive credentials in the industry. They have received dozens of awards, including accolades from the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and four Grammy Awards.Nine of their albums have gone gold, and two — the Oak Ridge Hee Haw star is Goober disguised By Joe Edwards The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn.— George Lindsey, the jovial Goober of The Andy Griffith Show and now a regular on Hee Haw, figures he has raised a generation of television viewers without growing up himself.“There may be more Goober in me than I’m willing to admit,” says Lindsey.“I may be Goober disguised as George Lindsey.“He and I both missed adulthood.I’ve never worn a snap-brim felt hat.” Lindsey was on the Griffith show and its successor, Mayberry RFD, from 1964 to 1971 and on Hee Haw ever since.“I’ve been on TV every week for 21 years,” he says with a big Goober grin.“America has grown up with me.Goober is Eve-ryman; everyone finds something to like about ol’ Goober.” There was a time, though, when Lindsey was sick of Goober — sick of his mother introducing him as Goober and his daughter calling him Goober Daddy.Even now, it’s an unwritten rule on the Hee Haw set that he’s always called George and he signs autographs as just plain George Lindsey.LOCKED IN Being identified with one character “can be an albatross as far as your career growing,” he says.“You get locked into that \character.Producers won’t hire you for other things. But I wouldn’t have done it any other way.” Lindsey, who gives his age only as “ancient,” joined the four-year-old Andy Griffith Show in 1964 as Goober Pyle after Jim Nabors took his Corner Pyle character to his own show. The Griffith show was popular, Lindsey says, because “it was honest and simple.” “At that time, we were the best acting ensemble on TV.The scripts were terrific.Andy is the best script constructionist I’ve ever been involved with. And you have to lift your acting level up to his; he’s awfully good.“The show’s still as popular today as ever and this is its 25th year.” His favorite episode was The Talking Dog, in which Opie and his buddies put a tiny speaker under a dog’s collar.“Goober thought he had a talking dog.It revealed Goober’s childlike qualities; it made you laugh and cry.” Lindsey says Griffith has described Goober “as the kind of guy who would go into a restaurant and say, ‘Hey, this is great salt.’” Despite 21 years of steady TV work, he yearns to be the star of his own show.Or maybe land a juicy dramatic role in a movie.“There’s a role out there for me that I can win an Academy award for, maybe about a retarded person or a pathos role,” he said.“I dream about that and what I would say in my acceptance speech.” SHOT DILLON He does have movie expe- i rience, having appeared in Can- j nonball Run II and Take This Job and Shove It.His voice was used in three animated Walt Disney features: The Aristocats, The Rescuers and Robin Hood.Early in his career, he often was a heavy and once shot Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke.A resident of Los Angeles, Lindsey makes about 200 personal appearances a year.He says he’s visited 166 truck stops since 1984 and can sign 800 pictures an hour “if you don’t look up.” He does standup comedy in Nevada nightspots and later this year will do a two-hour TV movie, Return to Mayberry, with the old Griffith gang.In his current nightclub act, there’s nothing too off-color, just some double entendres about fruit jar rubbers and being gelded. He ends the show by tap- and break-dancing.“It blows ’em away,” he says.Reflecting on his long, merry TV career, he says: “There’s a residual effect of knowing I’ve made America laugh.I’m not the only one, but I’ve contributed something.” One tombstone inscription he’s considering is: “I hope I made you laugh.” The other, more typical of his humor, is: “I TOLD you I was sick.” Boys's Greatest Hits and Fancy Free — have gone platinum. The group peaked in 1981 with a catchy, upbeat ditty called Elvira, which won virtually every country award for song of the year and was a hit on pop charts as well.“Elvira was the biggest-selling single ever to come out of Nashville,” boasts Bonsall.“Four years later people are still yelling ‘oom pawpa mou mou’ at us.Everybody in the recording business would love to have a record that would do for them what Elvira did for us.” Sterban says a large measure of the group’s success has come from sheer hard work.“A lot of people in this business get to a certain place and think they can coast,” he says.“We work harder since we’ve made it than we did when we were trying to make it.” But the group agrees the ingredient that has made that extra difference has been adaptability.“Every year we try to stay with what’s happening,” says Bonsall.“We enjoy the challenge that comes with improving musically and improving the stage show.We stay excited about it.” Take, for instance, their recent performance on the same bill as the Beach Boys at a Fourth of July picnic in Washington, D.C.California rock and down-South country may seem a strange concoction, but Bonsall says that was exactly the attraction of the joint performances.“We have talked about possibly doing a recording project together, maybe even doing a small tour together,” he says.“It’s just in the talking stages.” “Yeah, I think we’ll probably experiment a little bit before we make a lot of noise about it,” Allen adds cautiously. They are also working on a new album they hope to release this fall.North Hatley, Quebec AUGUST 8 — AUGUST 24 ANGEL OF DEATH Written by Raymond Storey Directed by Perry Schneiderman "Alice will be just fine.if she doesn't open TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 1985—3 Youngsters should be encouraged to join clubs With the influx of vacationers in the townships, I would imagine the circulation of the RECORD increases during the summer months.I would like to think that many are philatelists and read this column.I know you prefer fishing, swimming or boating at this time of year to stamp collecting, and I can’t say that I blame you, but September is coming and you’ll want to get back into the swing of things.I can’t stress enough the importance of stamp clubs, especially to youngsters and beginners.Nor can it be stressed enough to stamp clubs the importance of youngsters to their organizations. It is where you will receive your philatelic education. It is also a place where you will make good friends. The size or type of your collection is irrelevant. It would be worth your while to inquire as to the meeting place of Massawippi Festival The popular Festival du Lac Massawippi concert series continues Sunday Aug.18 with appearances by cellist Zophia Wierzbicka and oianist France Dupuis.Stamp corner I By Peter McCarthy your local stamp club.If there isn’t one in your area, get together with other stamp collectors and start one.Make sure and include young people. If you are not sure of how to go about getting one started, write to an established club. They will be more than happy to help out.If you don’t know of one, write to me at P.O.Box 688, Richmond, Que., JOB 2H0.I’ll do all I can to put you on the right track.BEWARE CRITICISM When reading philatelic columns, one must be very careful and not take too seriously some of the criticism that goes on.Many columnists either own a stamp busines or, are agents for suppliers of accessories.A perfect example of this fact appeared in a recent issue of the Canadian Philatelist, the official journal of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada.Darnell’s new catalogue of Canadian stamps, which is in French, was reviewed.Anyone forming an opinion based strictly on the review, certainly would never buy the Darnell catalogue. It was later discovered that the reviewer was an executive of a large philatelic supply company. This company is the publisher of a major Canadian stamp catalogue which is a competitor of Darnell’s.Columnists should be a little more discreet about what they write.Nothing is gained from this type of criticism. The reader especially, won’t learn Dominick Auto Sport Ltee My advice is to examine all the products on the markets in order to make up your mind as to what you think will be best suited to your needs. If you are not sure, contact someone that is reliable and can guide you in the right direction. Here is a little trivia. On June the 26th, 1959, a stamp was issued to commemorate the official opening of the St.Lawrence Seaway. The ceremony took place at the St.Lambert locks. What many people do not know, is that the first ship to go through the Sea- way was the Royal Yacht Britannia. She led a virtual convoy through the St.Lambert locks on April 25th, 1959 at approximately eleven o’clock in the morning.A full two months before the official opening.A reader recently wrote to tell me of a catalogue which would be of use to collectors of U.S.stamps.It is called the Postal Service Guide to U.S.Stamps.It is in colour and is available through any large U.S.post office at a cost of $3.50 U.S.Entertainment shorts WIN AWARDS Jazz impresario and pianist George Wein and composer Otto Luening have been given American Eagle Awards by the National Music Council for their significant contributions to American music.DESIGNS SHOWN Selected rare books on design themes will be on view through Oct.6 at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York. The volumes highlight the importance of illustrated books as tools in the design process.OWNED DOGS As a child, Shirley Temple owned three dogs: Corky, a scot-tie; Rowdy, a cocker spaniel; and Ching Ching, a Pekingese.¦4 Something’s missing EDITOR’S NOTE: / Three regular columns are missing from this edition of Townships Weei all due to those good old-fashioned ‘circumstances beyond our control’.The three missing items are Timothy Belford’s Wine Bits, Michael McDevitt’s What's On and Tadeusz Letarte’s Who’s Who.So for those readers who assume that the third is actually one or the other of the first two disguised by a pen name, keep on guessing. The Record regrets any inconvenience this may cause. All three columns should be back in their regular slots next week.I suppose, when you get right down to it, we regret whatever inconvenience THAT might cause as well._____________________________________ H’iHutierge Cabana Summer 85 Route 143 • Bromptonville 567-4008 — 846-2751 Dominick Dalloire owner and its Dining Room "Le you've even dabbled with some French theatre ’round these parts.Your Montreal connection can’t provide until the fall. But you can still get a cultural fix in central Canada, especially if you've got holidays held in reserve. The two most important draws continue to be the Stratford and Shaw festivals. It is gratifying to see fine performers who got their big start at the Piggery and Festival Lennoxville (Goldie Semple, David Schurmann, Susan Wright and Joe Zeigler, to name but a few) not only go on to these national theatrical venues but become permanent members of the troop.A market town in the agricultu- J ral midlands of Ontario, like England’s original, Stratford is home to the festival mandated to ; keep alive the works of the great bard and his contemporaries but has increasingly stretched it to include everything from Gilbert and Sullivan to Beckett to new Canadian plays. The Shaw, situated in the picturesque village of Niagara-on-the-Lake, tends to stick more closely to its objectives, producing the plays of George Bernard and others of the Shavean era.STRATFORD Some believe that Stratford has spread itself too thin.In recent years, it has run into financial difficulties — and not for lack of government financing. But the festival still stages the best Shakespearean productions on the continent and of this year’s repertoire — KING LEAR, TWELFTH NIGHT and MEASURE FOR MEASURE — the latter two are unbeatable.TWELFTH NIGHT is done just as the poet would have wanted. The costumes are Italian Renaissance, the music by Louis Apple-baum and singing by Edward Atienza as a wordly wise Feste, superbly appropriate but the subtlety of the acting, especially by Colin Feore as Orsino and Seana McKenna as Viola, made it the most enjoyable production of this very accessible comedy we have yet seen.OF Will may have been shocked to see the liberties taken with MEASURE FOR MEASURE.But then he would have been shocked by the world in which we live, the world in which director Michael Bogdanov has chosen to situate it.This 16th century examination of moral and political hypocrisy never seemed more appropriate. The decaying values of the middle ages and the rise of puritanism have parallels today.AUDIENCE TAKES PART The audience is welcomed into a sleazy club populated by new wave yuppies, punk gays, heavy metal transvestites and whores, disco pimps and gangsters. Some spectators are coaxed to mingle on the dance floor stage. The leather and chains of the low life are constrasted with the elite's silk and worsted.Values are discussed in boardrooms of the upper classes and enforced in their courts.Again, the audience becomes part of the show at a mass political rally. In this climate, born-again righteousness is tested by a philosopher-king and found wanting. But this modern interpreta- Jennifer Phipps as The Princess and Marti Maraden as Ermyntrude in Bernard Shaw’s The Inca of Perusalem, “a most delightful apéritif’.‘Growltiger” Sandy Winsby and crew prowl through a back alley wonderland in Cats.tion ends on an equivocal note as the heroine is forced by this benevolent despot to give up her own calling to be his lady.Direction is the star here but, without excellent support staff and strong acting, Bogdanov could not have pulled it off The omnipotent Duke is probably Alan Scarfe’s finest role, showing him to be one of Canada's greatest actors.LACKS MAGIC TOUCH KING LEAR, artistic director John Hirsch’s parting shot to Stratford, has never been one of our favourites.Hirsch has created a full-fledged, graphic world of tragedy and suffering, with Douglas Campbell sometimes evoking its agonizing depths. But the production ultimately lacks the magic touch Hirsch is capable of bestowing. The rest of Stratford’s program goes beyond its mandate but not its capabilities.Associate artistic director Brian Macdonald comes through with yet another first-rate G&S in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, where Brent Carver does a classic job of the pirate-king.(Stratford new artistic director John Neville directed).THE BEAUX STRATAGEM, a Third Stage production by the Young Company which rivals the fare at the more prestigious venues.Midsummer openings THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR by Gogol on August 9th, Goldsmith’s SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER August 8th and THE GLASS MENAGERIE by Tennessee Williams on August 30th portend good things to come.THE SHAW England’s other great bard is honoured in the fittingly lush surroundings of Ontario’s fruit and wine belt. The three Shaw plays offered this year are JOHN BULL’S OTHER ISLAND HEARTBREAK HOUSE and a short and sweet THE INCA OF PERUSALEM.INCA is a one-act farce put on as lunch-hour theatre. At a time when England was fighting Germany in the trenches, it deals with a meeting of royalty from both sides for the purpose of matrimony. The English princess is a dithering idiot incapable of ordering a cup of tea, while the Inca or Kaiser is a self-important, yet talented man reduced to impo-tency by his position as a constitutional monarch of a militant nation. He finds a soul-mate in an ex-millionairess forced to work as lady’s maid to the princess in order to maintain her standard of living.A most delightful apéritif to the Festival’s main courses. In JOHN BULL’S OTHER ISLAND, the people who see the problem clearly — a worldly, cynical ex-patriot and a defrocked priest who wishes to turn Ireland oouglas Rain as Captain Shotover and Marti Maraden as Ellie Dunn m Shows Heartbreak House, an Alice-in Wonderland view of post-England.J war TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 198S-5 .and highly acclaimed Cats into a heaven on earth — watch in amazement as an English liberal who disregards reality in favour of his own vision, reconquers the emerald isle, leaving us to wonder who was right after all.The play is expertly done but far too talky even for the actors who begin to show signs of fatigue by the dénouement.HIGHLY ENTERTAINING HEARTBREAK HOUSE provides an Alice-in-Wonderland view of post-war England.A week-end party at a bizarre country house forced all to face their illusions, leaving no meaning for any of them, save surrendering to destiny.Much more theatrical than ISLAND, its twists and turns are highly entertaining.Douglas Rains as the ancient mariner, Goldie Semple and Fiona Ried as his witch-like daughters, are especially good. The Festival’s other offerings are lighter fare: ONE FOR THE POT, a slapstick parlour comedy is no more than a hilarious vehicle for Heath Lamberts’ triumphant return to the Festival fold ; THE MADWOMAN OF CHAIL-LOT, a comic struggle between the romantic eccentrics of Paris and the rational machinations of ruthless speculators; THE WOMEN, a catty social comedy by Claire Booth Luce about America in the 30s; and NAUGHTY MARIETTA, a romantic musical by Victor Herbert of blossoming love in 18th century New Orleans.TROPICAL MADNESS NO.2, with a plot like a series of surrealist paintings, will be opening August 15th.And CAVALCADE, Noel Coward’s epic musical chronicle of an English family through 30 fateful years, opens the following day. With over 40 actors involved in this mammoth production, the last may prove a culture vulture’s must.AND T.O.TOO While passing through Toronto, an event not to be missed is the deservedly acclaimed CATS, inspired by T.S.Elliot’s OLD POSSUM’S BOOK OF PRACTICAL CATS.There has been so much publicity surrounding this Broadway musical that the more discriminating might be tempted to write if off as plebian but just read your nose! This is a spectacle well worth viewing with enchanting music, talented performers and dazzling sets and costumes.Who ever thought back alleys could prove such a wonderland?Already extended twice, the Toronto run is now set to end in mid November. There is talk of putting it on the road but not until demand at its prime location slows down considerably.A touring show, if it does happen, would inevitably mean sacrificing the extraordinary wraparound set.Toronto has many other theatrical experiences to offer.THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, another Broadway musical produced by the CATS team, has been running for almost as long.Toronto Free Theatre s Ltream in the Park” is over but under 4.u KcûhyMkhael McCAynn struts her stuff as Grizabella in the twice-extended Toronto run of Cats.Guy Sprung’s directorship (formerly with the Centaur in Montreal), innovative works are the watchword there.Consult the free and widely distributed NOW, a weekly arts and entertainment mag, for full listings and reviews. And, like New York, Toronto has a half-price ticket booth run by the actors’ guild, just outside Eaton’s Centre. For film buffs, following hot on the heels of Montreal’s World Film Festival (August 21) is Toronto’s glitzy Festival of Festivals (beginning September 1).We’re not recommending that you live there but it’s a i nice place to visit. It is everything you’ve dreamed o It Richard Woodley (DOUBLEDAY): $19.95, 177 pp.; Strike Two by Ron Luciano & David Fisher (BANTAM): $4.50, 322 PP The original lead for this baseball book review was rudely rendered non-applicable by the sudden, but welcome, ending to the baseball strike last Wednesday. So, rather than recommending that the spirit of the boys of summer could be perpetuated in a lawn chair, perusing three books focused on the grand old game, let it be said that there are aspects to Abner Doubleday’s game that might be found entertaining even as one eye is fixed on the tube.Of the three books in question, one is a rather feeble, rambling memoir of one of the most exciting careers in the sport (The Mick); one is a game-by-game diary of a remarkable rookie achievement by a young pitcher (Rookie) ; and the third is the second entry of retired umpire Ron Luciano into the annals of sport literature, following his runaway best-selling book The Umpire Strikes Back, suitably titled (Strike Two).— For the generation that idolized the exploits of the Yankees’ #7, The Mick is a huge disappointment. Most sandlot sluggers who tried to hit from both sides like the magic Mick will be disappointed in the revelations of Mantle’s own story.Oh the glory is there alright — tape-measure homers hit around the American League, the stupendous numbers of the Triple Crown coup of 1956, the Dial M for Murder days in 1961 when Mick and his best friend Roger Maris terrorized pitchers, the father-son relationship with the inimitable Casey, the astonishing quickness of Mantle’s cheetahlike flights to first base before the knees got gimpy, but the book is a sad one as well. For a number of reasons, The Mick mars the memories with its haphazard style, in which the story seems to be recounted through press clippings that have to jolt Mantle’s recall of bold strokes with the bat, or crippling fluke injuries.Far too often the uncertainty of Mantle about what happened takes on the following complexion: “In 1963 in a series at Baltimore.I was on the disabled list, probably with a broken toe or foot.Who knows what it was?” Another embarrassment in the book is the almost total denial of his family of young sons that the great Yankee sadly admits.and the callous manner in which he glosses over the whirlwind years of tagging along with Billy Martin and Whitey Ford with his own family hardly mentioned. But for those who will not be dismayed by the discrepancy between the baseball figure as he seemed to young eyes, and the man he admits to being in Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY The Mick, the book is at least a testimony to the man whose family between the foul lines was always the pinstriped Yankees. With Dwight Gooden rolling along this year at an incredible 18-3 pace, the sophomore jinx does not seem to be a factor for the young (20 last November 16th) New York Mets hurler who became known as “Dr.K.” Rookie allows the soft-spoken, levelheaded kid from Tampa, Florida to tell his own story, beginning with his days at Hillsborough High when he played third base and the outfield while he learned to pitch. The tale of Gooden’s accomplishments is laced with a string of “mosts”, ranging from his rookie strikeout record of 276 (only 13 short of Tom Seaver’s all-time Mets record) to his Rookie of the Year Award, and being the youngest player ever chosen to play in the All-Star Game.Rookie moves from series to series in the 1984 Mets’ year, with Gooden offering shy, non-controversial assessments of the exploits of his teammates such as Darryl Strawberry and Hubie Brooks.Of interest to Expos fans is the last chapter of Rookie in which Gooden comments on “the trade” which sent Gary Carter to the Mets in exchange for Hubie Brooks, Herm Winningham, Dr.K’s catcher Mike Fitzgerald, and his boyhood pal, Floyd Youmans, a fellow member of the pitching fraternity. In light of the continuing impression that pheenom Dwight Gooden is making, not to mention the thorn in the side he’s been to Nos Amours, Rookie is sure to be a popular book with Townships rounders aficionados.men in black, Ron Luciano offers a whimsical, often nutty, view of America’s favorite pastime.RECORD REVIEW Platinum Blonde ALIEN SHORES (COLUMBIA) Remember the concept album phase of rock?Well, Canada’s current contribution to the glamor rock parade, namely Platinum Blonde, uses most of one side of ALIEN SHORES to explore some para-sci-fi mental meandering.Writer Mark Holmes, PB’s lead vocalist, takes off from Erich Von Daniken’s theories about the Incan and Mayan temples and pyramids to pursue some of the esoterica on ALIEN SHORES.At first glance the teased blonde coiffs of this semi-Canadian (2 members are British, Holmes, and new addition and ex of the Deserters, Kenny MacLean) band might lead listeners to wonder if there was much substance ’neath the summer Clairol. But the images and themes explored on their second album might convince many that Platinum Blonde can whip their guitars around as easily as they flash tease combs.Their metier is a slightly toned-down Queen sound, or perhaps a Rush stance designed to curry more commercial favor than Neil Peart and the boys worry about.Lead single from ALIEN SHORES is a Holmes song taken from the non-concept side, “Crying Over You”.Oddly enough it’s one of the weakest tunes on the set, though rather firmly within the dance groove that Sergio Galli, the band’s guitarist, admits took over the entire album.Additional candidate for the singles market is a track called “Hungry Eyes”, though its position as closing cut on the album militates against its getting much play from turntable jockeys who love that outside, ea-sy-to-cue track. With Loverboy and Streetheart on the fade, and the Duranties always poised for fresh Strike Two is more of the anecdotal reminiscing about his 11 years in the American League.Luciano sheds light on such phenomena as the Umpire’s School, the life-threatening hazards of working the minor leagues, or the winter baseball terrors in the lands of dictators, and his ongoing vendetta against Orioles manager Earl Weaver. For those who wonder what could be going through the minds of umpires being beseiged and butted by such termagants of the baseball diamond as Billy Martin and Earl the Pearl, Strike Two gives Luciano’s funny side of it.Sprinkled with wacky baseball anecdotes told by Luciano and his fellow umpires, Strike Two is a lightweight summer read. For baseball fans who don’t get enough sports reading with the exploits of the players, but wonder about the perspective TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 1985-7 Tears for Fears combine good tunes, deep lyrics By Richard de Alley LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tears For Fears, the young British duo that has found success by combining end-of-the-world lyrics with irresistible dance music, has nothing to cry about and little to be afraid of this summer. Its second album, Songs From the Big Chair, sold more than 1 million copies and held the No.1 spot on the Billboard album chart for at least four weeks. The album is credited with reviving the ailing American operations of PolyGram Records, which releases Tears For Fears in the United States on the Mercury label. In June, the song Everybody Wants to Rule the World, reached the top of the Billboard singles chart, and at the beginning of August, Shout topped the singles list.Tears for Fears consists of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, both 24.They are natives of Bath, England, chums since 13, and students of existentialist literature and psychologist Arthur Janov’s works on primal scream therapy. The two Brits, short, dark and handsome, have made it a point to shun the glittery rock star life of London and still live in rural Bath. Both are married and shy about the admiration of their fans, especially teenage girls prone to throw clothing up on stage when they perform.Orzabal is the songwriter and plays guitar and keyboard, programs synthesizer rhythms, and sings.Smith sings and plays bass.as palpable as the hot smoggy air.The duo was on the West Coast leg of their American tour with their backup group of keyboardist Ian Stanley, drummer Manny Elias, Andy Sanders on guitar, William Gregory on saxophone and Nikki Holland on key- boards.PART OF BRITISH SURGE Songs From the Big Chair is the latest in a resurgence of British groups on American charts. No foreign act managed to top Billboard’s charts in 1984, but so far in 1985, Make It Big by Wham! and Phil Collins’ No Jacket Required have topped album charts, along with Tears for Fears.“I think people have looked to what Britain has done since the Beatles,” Smith said.“American rock was, and still is to some ex-tent, a closed shop.RED Speedwagon, Toto, Boston, Foreigner — all those bands, and I wouldn't be able to tell which from which. For over 10 years, they’ve been playing the same things.AT ffUikfS different MAISON DE L’AUTO R.C.HIS SALES PERSONNEL Micheline taken from the television movie Sybil. The title character, played by Sally Field, suffered from multiple personalities and found refuge only in a big chair in her psychiatrist’s office.Despite Tears For Fears’ obsession with psychology, the music doesn’t sound like a left-behind suicide tape, or the wailing tunes John Lennon recorded under Janov’s influence in the early 1970s.What makes Tears for Fears’ tunes accessible is the music that cradles it: carefully produced synthesizer and guitar work that avoids trivializing lyrics, beckoning the dancer to listen, and the listener to dance.“One simple explanation would be the people we’re influenced by,” said Smith.“Like Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel, they do the same kind of thing, combining a good tune with very deep lyrics, trying to make a song work on three levels of depth, of meaning, and still be musically very good.” Smith was in Los Angeles recently, savoring a success almost (SPECIALLY FOR THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITY)
