over, and people have come back to reality to realize they don’t really have what they expected, it’s time to look at other varieties that didn’t create as much as a ripple of commotion.Yet these varieties are on a par with the Hudson flaw.Let’s start with the 1972 Krieghoff commemorative stamp of the Blacksmith Shop. The broken door variety occurs on every stamp of the fourth vertical row. There were 592,000 sheets of 50 stamps each, which means there were 5,920,000 stamps with the broken door variety. In addition, there are two other varieties to this stamp. These are the extra log varieties. One can be seen in R8/4.that is the eight horizontal row and the fourth vertical. The other, which occurs in a different pane is at R10/5.The positions on the stamps that these errors occur, are in H-8 and H-10.In the Paul Kane seven cent commemorative, there is a variety known as the tear or stroke Red print shift to the left f A Stamp ** corner By Peter McCarthy on the tepee. It appears on every stamp in the first vertical row at position D-6.The 1967 centennial flag and map stamps has quite a print shift in the color red.The shift is anywhere up to one mm to the right or left of it’s normal position. The best way of defining it is through the flag staff.Very few people realize this variety exists, even though it’s quite common. The 1967 five cent Votes for Women issue, or the Women’s Lib issue, as it is more com mon-ly referred to, has a plate flaw which resembles the lady sporting quite a black eye. This variety appears in a sheet at position R9/8 and affects the lady’s left eye.The 1966 provincial floral issues offer several constant varieties. The purple violet has a doubling in the flowers. The prairie crocus has on some stamps, a dot over the left petal of the centre flower. The pit- cher’s plant has a variety known as the five o’clock. This variety can be found on some stamps in the centre of the flower to the right, at the five o’clock position. The definitive issues bring us many varieties, even in the high values. The one dollar stamp depicting the city of Vancouver, in the caricature and landscape series, is known to have a short staff in the dollar sign and, a dot after the word post. The two dollar Banff issue is known to have up to 11 different sm all flaws. Most of these are of the flyspeck of doughnut variety. The two dollar Kluane can be found with the denomination and the word Canada missing. This is a major variety. The latest five dollar issue depicting La Mauricie National Park, has a variety of doughnuts, including one that resembles a burning bush. There are many more issues with such flaws. It’s all up to you to find them. There’s no need to pay high prices for them either. This is all part of the hobby, close examination of your stock on hand.If you think you may have something unusual, and wish to have it confirmed, write to me, sending the stamp or a good photo copy of the stamp, and I’ll try and confirm it for you.The address is Box 688, Richmond, Que., JOB 2H0.Broken door framing variety Lac Brome play runs one last weekend KNOWLTON (KT) — October 24, 25 and 26 are your last opportunity to see the current TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24,19t«>—3 Rosemaling in the Townships Blue Armoire gallery hosts Norwegian folk art show By Laurel Sherrer DUNHAM — Jack Paton chuckles as he describes himself as a Scotsman teaching French Canadians a Norwegian folk art.It may sound a little muddled, but the artwork that results isn’t.It’s called Rosemaling, and it’s the Norwegian art of painting intricate designs primarily on wooden household articles.Paton discovered the art quite by accident about 15 years ago.“I went to the Fletcher Farm Craft School (in Vermont) to take up watercolors,” he explains.“Somehow or other 1 got the dates switched.” The week he arrived the watercolor classes were filled, but someone suggested enrolling in a Rosemaling course.Once he tried it, he was hooked.Paton now teaches classes in Rosemaling and has formed the Eastern Townships Rosemalers Society. The society’s, and quite possibly the province's, first Rosemaling exhibition takes place at the Blue Armoire Gallery in Dunham this weekend.DISTINCT STYLE Rosemaling had its start around 1750 as an aftermath of the baroque and rococco painters who came from the continent to paint the Christian churches of Norway. The painters often used local craftsmen as apprentices, and these apprentices later responded to the demand of local farmers to decorate their own homes.Because of the hills and fiords of Norway, each isolated valley developed its own distinct style, which connoisseurs of Rosemaling can distinguish even today. But Rosemaling is more than mere decoration, says Paton.Symbols and patterns were developed that had important meanings for certain groups of people.Christians running from the encroaching Turks, for example, would look for the shutters of houses decorated in a particular way.In the Telemark region, patterns generally contained scrolllike figures in the shape of a C (for Christ) radiating from the centre of the pattern. If the C was open toward the bottom, it meant the Christians dwelling there could provide shelter for the refugee.AC open toward the top meant the residents were being watched and hence could not provide shelter, in which case another subtle formation in the design pointed toward a neighbor who could help. The size and colors of the C’s also identified the people living in the house: red for a woman, blue for a man, smaller C’s for children and so on.ASYMMETRIC The Telemark pattern, which still exists, always contains the C scroll in some form, and is asymmetric.Other familiar Rosemaling designs include the Halling- Kancy Gunson demonstrates the deft strokes required to execute smooth, flowing designs.i ?i Above: Valerie Van Horn shows how she applied a Telemark pattern to several sets of bellows.Right: Members of the Rosemalers Society find ingenious new ways to use their skill and talent.dal.which is always symmetrical and uses no shading or highlights, just solid opaque colors; and the Old Rogaland, which is also symmetrical but uses deep shading on the inside of the scrolls and highlighting on the outside. The Old Rogaland also features stylistic tulips, chrysanthemums, lilies and round flowers with an even number of petals. There are, naturally, as many designs as there are valleys in Norway, but some have become more popular than others.Rosemalers generally trace the basic outlines of a design from paper onto the article they plan to decorate, but much of the detailing hastheirownparticulartouch. The painting is done freehand, and it takes practice to execute the swirls and tear-drop shapes smoothly.Purists put their designs only on painted backgrounds, but many have adapted the art to include painting on finished wood surfaces.Articles of furniture, milk cans, mailboxes, and breadboards are all suitable for Rosemaling.POTENTIAL CANVAS Says Dawn Sparling, a member of the Rosemalers .Society, once you’ve learned how to paint in this style, you're inclined to look at everything as a potential canvas.“Every garage sale you go to, e you say, ‘Can I have that because S would it ever look nice after I get | finished with it’,” she says.It be-| comes a way of recycling house-; hold items that have seen better 5 days. The Rosemalers Society is a member of the Norwegian- American Historical Museum in Decorah, Iowa, and receives patterns from the museum. The artist has the freedom to choose the colors and the items to be decorated, but certain traditions prevail. The colors are generally the older, mat shades; never brighter gaudy, or on the other hand, pastel. Background colors are commonly ava-codo green, mustard yellow, rust red or Norse blue. The designs are applied in acrylic paint for the smaller items, oil paint for the larger so it won’t dry before the artist is finished. It doesn't take long to execute a design; it’s the practice and the preparation of the item beforehand that takes patience."I think we’ve all had a few tears," says Valerie Van Horn, a Rosemalers Society member.A metal item not properly treated, for example, may cause the lovingly applied design to peel off before long.Six artists are showing their work at the Blue Armoire this weekend: Use Gasser, Nancy Gunson.Jack Paton.Dawn Sparling.Petra Strobele and Valerie Van Horn. The exhibition will run from 10:30 to 5 p.m.Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m.Sunday, and there will be some items for sale.On the cover: Jack Paton poses with some of the creations of the Eastern Townships Rosemalers Society. TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.OCTOBER 24,1986—5 Valin novel strips away glossy veneer of pro football Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY Life’s Work by Jonathan Valin (DOUBLEDAY-DELACORTE): $21.95, 251 pp.For his sixth novel featuring now well-established, sharply defined private eye Harry Stoner, Jonathan Valin enters the intense, brutal world of professional football. In his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, Stoner is hired by the management of that city’s fictionalized Cougars of the N.F.L.to put a tracer on Billy Parks, a behemoth of a nose guard who has jumped camp with just four weeks to go before the season opens.Once Stoner begins his investigation into the whereabouts of Parks, the glossy veneer of the sport that is America’s Sunday passion is stripped away to reveal a world of cocaine, steroids and brutality that until recently scarcely ever came under scrutiny.Novelist Valin’s forte as a writer in the crowded private eye genre is his ability to draw convincing characters, and while Billy Parks is only learned about by reputation and hearsay, his comrades and their manipulators — entrepreneurs of sleazy gymnasiums, hookers and hanger-on are presented in Life’s Work in full detail.Stoner finds that loyalties in the pro football world run deep and hooks up with Otto Bluerock, one of Billy Pards’s room-mates on the circuit.Bluerock is convinced that his buddy Billy can do no wrong, and that he’s just another misunderstood athlete. When Stoner begins to uncover hints that Parks has been mistreating his girlfriend and generally behaving in a psychotic fashion, the plot thickens.Stoner’s investigation leads him into the discovery of a hideous homicide in which Parks’s girlfriend C.W.O’Hara, pregnant with his child that has been diagonosed as mongoloid and horribly deformed, has been literally eviscerated and left dead in a bloodbath that points to the football player as its crazed tJFsWtxac JONATHAN VALIN author.Parks is revealed as a steroids freak whose reliance on the muscle and organ-transfroming drugs has led to startling developments in his internal organs brought on by his injecting of testosterone and other anabolic steroids in pursuit of the perfect body.Adding to the problems of the Cougar's artificially altered lineman is his Bible-toting mother who is fanatically opposed to his relationship with girlfriend C.W., a crooked cop on the Drup Enforcement Agency coke-squad, and some memorable folk on the fringes of the pro football world.Throughout the case Harry Stoner maintains his image as a straight-shooting, honest peeper with a heart of gold, in spite of the increased carnage that has been injected into Jonathan Valin's latest outing for his serial detective.RECORD REVIEWS Til Tuesday WELCOME HOME (EPIC-COLL1MBIA) Fronted by the coquettish Aimee Mann, Til Tuesday just happens to take the stunning blonde as a front-spiece idea quite a distance farther than the bands like the short-lived Blondie were able to do.No mirrors, pyrotechnics on stage, ’Til Tuesday gets the job done on the strength of the stunning vocals of Ms.Mann, combining some old-style double-tracking in the John & Paul vein, to get some soft and warm effects on just about every track on this second album from the band voted Best New Artists of the Year by both MTV and ABC-TV’s Network Music awards Show.Producer Rhett Davies (Roxy Music’s AVALON the highmark in his directorial achievments list) coaxes some smooth performances out of Aimee and the other members of Til Tuesday, Robert Holmes (guitars and back-vox), Michael Hausman (drums and percussion), and Joey Pesce (piano, syths, and back-vox), particularly on the video section “What About Love”.The track from which the title phrase has been lifted is “Coming Up Close”, and it could very well be the second single to take flight from this record, having as it does that bouncy Bangles sound allied with Tuesday's Top-40 knack with a song. This album strongly asserts that the inroads being made by groups such as R.E.M., Let’s Active, Lone Justice, Katrina & The Waves, are due as much to the predominance of strong melodies and the lessening of metallic, programmed artificiality as they are to the blush of youth that touches them all.Rossington RETURNED TO THE SCENE OF THE CRIME (ATLANTIC-WEA) What an ever-twisting family tree this band Rossington can lay claim to.At least two of its members were employed in the Rossington Collins Band, which featured Gary Rossington and Allen Collins and remnants of the late lamented Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. The singer for that group was Dale Krantz, who now emerges on Rossington as Dale Krantz-Rossington having obviously tied the knot with her guitar-playing fellow bandsman. Her voice is a throwback to the gritty power of Janis Joplin, but also capable of rounding off a near balled with ease. The roots reaching back to the southern dynamo Skynyrd may be heard on a few of the Rossington tracks that really cook, but the direction really is toward a sound like that of Jennifer Rush, or even Tina Turner's soulful strut. This one merits a listen even if it’s only for the nostalgia called up by the memories of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Is 1 r f £ \ The Statlers FOUR FOR THE SHOW (MERCURY-POLYGRAM) Having dropped the “Brothers” appellation form their name, and added a new songwriting tenor a couple of albums back, the Statlers continue to record ear-catching music on their 27th album, some 21 years after the success of their first single, “Flowers On The Wall” in 1965.Newest addition to the Reid Brothers, and Phil Balsley is Jimmy Fortune, whose songwriting racked up two National Songwriter Awards in a row with “Elizabeth” in 1984, and last year’s “My Only Love”.The Statlers are always quick with an eye to the newest rages in country music, so the inclusion of Roger Miller’s “You Oughta Be Here With Me” form his Tony award-winning musical BIG RIVER here is a natural.Their ability to slipover intoold rock classics, especially those with the doo-wop backings that are a cinch for their gospel-harmonies, comes through with a fine rendition fo the Buck Ram classic from 1955 which was a signature tune for the famous Platters — “Only You”.An indication fo the Statlers’ talent is that their interpretation of this old folk ballad really takes on an identity of its own, with their blend of country harmony hardly disturbing the memories that listeners have of the original.Jimmy Fortune’s “Forever” is a beautiful ballad that showcases the incredible outside edges of these perfectly blended voices — bass singer Harold Reid and Fortune’s tenor are as pitch-perfect as any quartet that has ever sung pop music. When these guys ring a chord it could break glass! The only real quibble about this Statlers’ album is the brevity of the cutsd, only five short tracks a side — but maybe it's a case of quality before quantity because these Statlers seem to be aging like fine wine.Bishop-Champlain I I Art Gallery invites the public to the opening night of an exhibition of recent paintings by: ROLAND BASTIEN on Wednesday, October 29,1986 at 8 p.m.The artist will Quebec men’s magazine Au Masculin, its bearded, beefy editor surprised his interviewer by immediately crediting women.“In these days of androgyny, men are looking at women to see what they can learn from them, and our magazine is a product of that examination,” said Jacques Cimon.Sensing some skepticism.Cimon smiled, adjusted his glasses and defended his thesis.“Today, men are taking the time to think about themselves and read about themselves — and not just in the sports pages. They want to know how to dress, how to keep in shape and how to enjoy themselves.“These are things that women have been doing for 25 years while men were playing the dark, sombre, classic role they were supposed to.In this way, we’ve learned something from women.” SALES GROW Judging from the growing sales of Au Masculin, a French-language monthly, Cimon may be correct. Now in its fourth year of publication.the number of people reading Au Masculin has risen to 70,000 from 3,000 when it was first issued, and Cimon said the magazine is signing up 300 new subscribers every week.He expects the magazine, owned by a small Quebec publishing company, will turn its first profit this year. The Toronto-based Print Measurement Bureau says these figures would put Au Masculin among the 10 top selling French-language magazines in Quebec. The magazine's format is broad, with a typical issue containing a political or business-oriented piece, a sports or entertainment story, fitness and leisure articles and a fashion spread.“We’re not like GQ (the highly successful U.S.magazine), which concentrates most of its efforts on fashion,” said Cimon.“We're more like a French-language version of Esquire in that we’re trying to reach an intellectual clientele interested in our features.“But our linguistic market is much smaller. And don’t forget, for every one Esquire sold, Penthouse sells 30 copies.” NOT SOFT PORN Despite its name, Cimon emphasized that Au Masculin was neither a soft-porn nor gay magazine. It's “serious about masculinity, but not macho.“All men’s magazines have some gay readership,” he said.“Our magazine is not aimed specifically at gays, but at all adult men.” He said marketing surveys show that the magazine is read by “educated” men, most of whom are in the advertisers' dream-target group from age 25 to 34 and members of Quebec’s burgeoning executive class.“These arc serious men.but men who want to stay young and have fun,” said Cimon.Nine people work on the magazine from an office in a renovated apartment in Montreal's trendy mid-town section. Most of the articles are written by freelance journalists. There are two women who help put the magazine together, including Shirley Rugenius Cole who oversees the lifestyles section.YUPPIE BIBLE?But that hasn't stopped feminists and other groups from slamming Au Masculin as the bible of yuppie jockdom.“We don’t want to defend masculinity,” said Cimon.“We're not the male version of La Vie en rose,” he said, referring to the stridently feminist Quebec magazine.“But we also do not want to do battle with feminists. We’re not at war.” Cimon said marketing research shows that a quarter of Au Masculin's readers are women and many of them take the time to write letters to the editor."Most of them are complimentary.‘Keep up the good work' and that sort of thing. But sometimes they’re scathing.” A story on what one writer believed defined the masculine condition drew a stream of invective.“One woman wrote that she wanted to castrate the author," said Cimon with a mischievous smile, clearly relishing the controversy. TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24.198B-7 Mountain House receives rave reviews — in the 1880s The Mountain House Hotel in 1885.This photo is from an advertising brochure of the time.1 With the arrival of the steamship "Mountain Maid" in 1850, a hotel had to be constructed on the shores of Lake Memphremagog for the vacationers. It wasn't long before one was erected at the foot of Owl’s Head mountain which unhappily was destroyed by fire around 1855.Afterwards the construction of a new hotel was undertaken on the same site which became the centre of attraction between 1880 to 1899.We must understand that the majestic Lady of the Lake had begun navigating around 1867 and brought many travelers. In the Quebec Morning Chronicle of Aug.26,1856, someone described a trip he had made from Quebec to Newport. He tells us his stop at the Mountain House Hotel and says: "On our arrival after a very necessary ablution, we did justice to a lunch worthy of the finest chef of Quebec City.We spent the rest of the day reading on verandas facing the lake, gently caressed by breezes, then an excursion in a row boat and a bowling match. This house is large and airy, the rooms very clean and a dining room with good company and excellent cuisine.” CASINO ADDED Around 1880 the hotel reached the height of its renown with the addition of a casino, an annex, cottages, tennis court, croquet game, a fleet of row-boats and a steam boat.At this time, the hotel could accomodate about 200 guests — certain sources give us the number TORONTO (CP) — The National Ballet of Canada attracted a record audience of 92 per cent of capacity at the O’Keefe Centre during its 1985-86 season but it still had a deficit of $178,734.Board treasurer William Mitchell told the 35th annual meeting that the deficit was relatively low considering the company’s $12-million budget and noted that government grants had remained un- Bubbles By JACQUES BOISVERT of the Société d’Histoire du Lac Memphrcmagog Inc.of 500, but this seems an exaggeration. There were 44 rooms in the main building with running spring water on each floor, 13 rooms in the annex and 8 rooms in the cottages. The hotel at the beginning was only accessible by boat but later a road for coach horses was made between Knowlton and the hotel. The main attraction was the climbing of Owl’s Head — which took two hours. From the summit, people could admire a splendid view and after a little rest, they wuld come back down.Mr.Bar-rows.in his book the Shaybacks in Camp ( 1888) writes, "Another spot which has many attractions for the summer visitor is the Mountain House located at the foot of Owl’s Head, especially for the travellers who like mountain climbing. The site of the hotel is excellent and offers a place far from the world with a magnificent panorama.” In 1857 the Freemasons set up there the first outdoor masonic lodge in the world, and even today, they meet on the Saturday closest to the St.John The Baptist holiday of June 24.Not to mention the fishing of this period would be a sacrilege. In a pamphlet of 1889, one reads: “The changed or failed to keep up with the inflation rate. The accumulated deficit now is $1.4 million. The company gave 123 performances in Toronto and on tour and box office revenues increased to more than $4 million, about $400.000 more than the previous year.Fund-raising reached a record $1.6 million.area is renowned for its enormous lake trout. It is not unusual to haul out ’monsters’ (this was happening before "Memphré”) of 30 to 40 pounds each.We hesitate to tell you more, but we would simply dare to mention that a fisherman captured and sold a quantity of 2,600 pounds of fish in one week.” In 1861 the governor general, sir LONDON (AP) — Charlie Watts, the drummer for the Rolling Stones, has come to the rescue of a dog put in quarantine after being sent to El Salvador to help sniff out earthquake survivors.Meg.a collie, was ordered to spend six months in isolation under anti-rabies procedures. Her Welsh owner, David Jones, said the dog would have to be destroyed because he could not afford the resulting kennel bill, the equivalent of almost $2,000 Cdn.Jones, 35, said this week Watts heard about the problem and agreed to pay the bill, which he called ‘‘a tremendous gesture.” The London press had described Meg as a heroine after she found a Salvadoran survivor who had been buried under rubble for nine days.TORONTO (CP) — Otto Friedrich.pianist, author and journalist, has been chosen to write the official biography of Glenn Gould, the great Toronto pianist would be a good time to see Linda Singer’s unique assortment of stencil prints on paper at the Arts Sutton Gallery.Singer entitles her collection Out of My Head, because of their imaginative and fanciful quality.Singer, you may recall, is the exhube-rant Sutton artist who created a couple of coloring books entitled Coloring Therapy for Grown-ups, and if you step into MaGregor’s store in Knowlton’s new Millpond Village, you’ll see an example of her decorating talent all over the walls and counters there. Her Out of My Head exhibition is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a m.to 5 p.m.Our Winding Roads and Streams is what Knowlton artist Gordon Ladd is calling his latest show, opening this weekend at the Homestead Gallery in Lennoxville.Ladd has established himself securely in Townships art circles and beyond with his detailed, realistic paintings of sugar bushes, barns and meadows around the Townships. At his shows you can be sure to find something that tugs at the heartstrings by evoking memories of some favorite rambling spot in the countryside. The show runs until Nov.2 and the gallery is open 9 to 5 Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m Sunday and 11 a.m.to 8 p.m.weekdays.The Galerie d'Art La Falaise in Sherbrooke features recent works of Saguenay painter Marcellin Dufour until Monday. In Granby, works by Louise Rioux will be displayed in the lobby of the provincial which, to paraphrase the press release, represent intimate scenes exploring the border zone between reality and fiction. This exhibition goes on until Nov.16 in the art gallery. Also in the art gallery heist.Word is that it’s pretty funny, and if you’d like to decide for yourself, you can see it at 7:15 or 9:20 p.m.Friday to Sunday, at weekend matinees at 2:05 or at 7:30 Monday to Thursday. The third option at Merrill's is Top Gun, which, surely, you have heard about by now.Tom Cruise plays a talented jet pilot who never quite gets the honors he deserves because of an attitude problem.I suspect his propensity to playfully break the rules once in awhile is supposed to be endearing, but he comes across as a cheeky smart aleck who deserves all the hard knocks he gets.He falls in love with a gorgeous instructor, and there are lots of long, long flight sequences, and the hero finally proves himself, although not quite the way you would expect. No, it’s not entirely predictable, but I’m still astonished at how long the movie’s holding on.Top Gun plays at Merrill's Friday to Sunday at 7 and 9:25 p.m.with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.and Monday to Thursday at 7:25 p.m.The Cinema Princess in Cowansville also has two new ones. The Hitcher is apparently about a hitchhiker who is terrorized by a weirdo who gives him a ride.Syndicated TV critics Siskel and Ebert panned this one, saying there was a lot of needless violence and no redeaming features.I don’t know; if it’s scary enough, and you’ve got teen-age kids who insist on hitch-hiking, it might be worth sending them. The Hitcher shows nightly at 7:15.This is followed, at 9:05 p.m., by the comedy That’s Life, starring Julie Andrews and Jack Lemmon, and I’m afraid that’s all I can tell you about it.In Sherbrooke, the Cinemas Unis at the Carrefour de 1 'Es-trie shopping centre has nothing in English this week, but The Decline of the American Empire continues at the same times as last week at the Capitol: the original French version at 7 every night as well as at 1 p.m.Sunday and Tuesday, and the English-subtitled version at 9 nightly as well as 3 p.m.Sunday and Tuesday. This is the Cannes aw^ard-winning film that revolves around a group of men and a group of women talking about relationships — or if we want to be blunt about it, sex. This is about the fifth week it’s been in Sherbrooke, which, I guess, says something about its quality (although Top Gun stayed here something like 13 weeks).Works by Louise Rioux, depicting scenes of the Gaspé, will be on display in the lobby of the provincial government building in Granby starting Monday.See Exhibitions/Events column.Television In its continuing quest to keep Townshippers informed about issues affecting them, the community affairs program Townships Magazine has four very different interviews lined up for next week’s show Clarence Blake will be talking about Boy Scouts awards night, PierreCasgrain will talk about the problems and demands of the local branch of the civil servants' union.Monique Comptois of Revenue Quebec will talk about end-of-the-year financial concerns that might affect you, and finally Kathleen Hanna will be on hand to talk about the Townships Sun newspaper.Townships Magazine is seen on Cable 11 in Sherbrooke Tuesday at 9 p.m., Wednesday at 11 p.m.and Friday at 8 p.m.The program can also be picked up in Magog Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.It may just be because I’ve been out of the country for a week, but it does seem like the movie selections around the region have proliferated. There are two new ones at the Merrill’s Showplace Cinemas in Newport. One of these is The Gods Must Be Crazy. This is not, strictly speaking, new ; in fact, it came out about two years ago.It played for months at one theatre in Ottawa and people were said to have gone back eight or 10 times, but it’s one of those quirky films that generally don't make it into the wilds of the Eastern Townships or northern Vermont. It’s a cute story about a backwards African tribe whose peaceful existence is disrupted when someone tosses a Coke bottle out of a passing plane. At first, the bottle is believed to be a gift from the Gods, but then as it leads to bitter conflict within the tribe, it becomes clear that it’s some kind of curse. The little chief decides he must toss it off the edge of the earth, and sets out on a journey that brings him into contact with "civilized” people, further convincing him that “the gods must be crazy”.The unspoken, quizzical response of the chief to the antics of the white people is priceless. The movie is showing at 7:10 and 9:15 Friday to Sunday with matinees at 1:50 on the weekend, and Monday to Thursday at 7:20 p.m.Also new at Merrill’s is Tough Guys, starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster as aging gansters who, having tried in vain to go straight after getting out of prison, decide Paintings by Gordon Ladd, including 'Along the Bank' (above) will be on display at the Homestead Gallery in Lennoxville starting tomorrow.See Exhibitions/ Events column. 10—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.OCTOBER 24.1986 Beggars’ methods can be as varied as vacation spots By David Gersovitz The Canadian Press Jose Brache is a gentle man.but he plays an unusual game with the urchins who swarm around intersections in Santo Domingo to wash windshields for a few centavos.Brache, a Santo Domingo businessman who doubles as Canada's honorary consul in the Dominican Republic, keeps a small machete under his seat.Sometimes he gets out of the car with it and makes a pretence of appearing menacing. It’s play acting, needless to say, and the kids know it."They taunt me,’’ says Brache.“I make a fool out of myself. My wife thinks I'm crazy." But being hassled by these kids is one of Brache’s pet peeves, and this is his way to ease the frustration. The world is full of people like the poor kids of Santo Domingo, eking out a marginal existence. For many tourists, the ped- dlers, window-washers, beggars, hustlers, and so-called guides who hang out at major cities and resorts, especially in the tropics, can be a blight on their vacation.GREAT MEMORIES Perhaps. But some of these characters can be memorable in their own right.Take these examples from a recent swing I made through the Caribbean. The Good: I met Mike on my first day in Jamaica by the Oceanside promenade in Kingston."Mike is good to foreigners," he told me.He certainly had good technique. He became my shadow as I toured downtown despite warnings there was neither need nor reward for his presence. His methods were well-honed: Just be a friend, talk about Canada and Jamaica, offer a bit of advice, never be pushy.Above all, deny any suggestion that a donation is expected.Mike even turned down a free beer on a hot day.He eventually found a way to make himself useful, promising to find a taxi driver who wouldn't overcharge me.He made his move at the very last moment, just as I was slipping into the cab."It's really rough man.my little girl won't eat tonight." he said, adopting an urgent tone."Maybe 20 or 30 Jamaican dollars?" Not having much chance to think.I shoved 10 (about $2.70) at him.Bull made it back on the ride.It was one of the few times in Kingston I wasn't overcharged for a cab.And I learned something. If hustlers like Mike have a white lie or two in their arsenal.I could use one, too. From then on, I always told would-be guides that I was an old hand who knew all the sights. The tactic proved highly effective.GOT MONEY The Bad : There is a young fellow who directs people at night to the taxi line at Santo Domingo's Las Americas Airport.I'm convinced he was a rude Paris waiter in an earlier life.He carried my small bag 20 paces, then held out his palm and wouldn't close the car door until I greased it.As I fumbled with unfamiliar currency, he suggested five pesos (about $3).Offended, I gave him one peso, and he was lucky that Dominican paper money doesn’t come any smaller. He shoved the bill into his pocket with evident disgust, but I felt good. The Ugly : Then there was Julio.I call him that, although I never got close enough to ask his name.He was tiny, maybe four years old.Julio was ugly, with a disproportionately large nose dominating a brown face, but that made him all the more irresistible to the patrons — mainly locals — in the restaurant on the Male-con, Santo Domingo’s ocean-side boulevard.Julio was the Cabbage Patch Kid of beggars.CUDDLED CHILD As he worked the restaurant, women would pick him up and cuddle him.Every male patron went for his wallet, ready to press money in his hand.Even the waiter hadn’t the heart to shoo him away as he did all the other beggars and flower salesmen.Julio, I mused, had the perfect system.I was wrong. After half an hour, he had made it to only four tables. The cooing and the cuddling just wouldn’t stop, and finally got the better of him.He made a break for the street and didn’t return. For every Mike or Julio, of course, there are ragged mothers cradling starving children, holding out a desperate hand. They are harder to refuse, more painful to remember. But a tourist can’t feed all the hungry. There’s no shame, I was repeatedly told by local residents, in having a thick skin.New York offers endless Theatre Of Real Life productions By Calvin Woodward NEW YORK (CP) - All the world's a stage, Shakespeare said, and Manhattan features endless daily productions in the Theatre of Real Life. There’s a cast of millions and just as many plots, backdrops that tickle the clouds and as much comedy, pathos and drama as you can find with a pocketful of Broadway theatre tickets.Playing under the streets of the city is what one writer dubbed the Belly of the Worm, the New' York subway system. It’s known mostly for its aura of danger after dusk but sometimes it is accompanied by a backdrop of music. One day it was a man with a mi crophone serenading a captive, rush-hour audience with I Left My Heart in San Francisco.A woman stood by him, enraptured, while other commuters showed small smiles or stayed shielded behind their newspapers as trains roared by, drowning him out every few minutes. Then there's Cyclone, the subway trip named after the famous roller-coaster at Coney Island which for decades thrilled visitors to the park with a careering ride and the violent screech of metal wheel on metal rail.NOTABLE THEATRE The run to Coney Island aboard Cyclone is a production notable for its special effects, illegible graffiti and hopelessly muffled public-address announcements and, if your train breaks down, a surprise, claustrophobic plot twist. For tragedy, New Yorkers took in No Miracle on 33rd Street this summer. The venue was Gimbels, the once-great store that starred with its neighbor, Macy’s, in the Christmas film classic Miracle on 34 th Street. Now Gimbels is out of business. All summer long, it was in its death throes, dying without grace.Like an ailing dowager wearing too much lipstick, the store was bedecked one last time with boughs and wreaths for a Christmas in August sale.Shoppers hunted through the picked-over merchandise, finding lamps without shades and fine china smeared with grime.Down be- low, subway entrances to Gimbels were clogged with garbage. The curtain finally fell this month. Then there was the slice-of-life episode, Two Men in an Elevator, a rapid-fire dialogue on food and mortality that played for 20 seconds between the fifth and first floors of a Rockefeller Centre building.' r .It consisted of two New Yorkers discussing their sandwiches with zeal and utter gravity.Clutching their lunchbags, they talked about the thickness of the meat, the amount of it, the alleged carcinogens contained therein and how it doesn’t matter anyway because we’re all going to die.PICKETS SING One block east and two south from A Chorus Line on Broadway, A Picket Line had a limited engagement outside the New York Telephone Building. This production featured a picket line swaying rhythmically as several dozen striking operators sang “We work hard for the money so you’d better treat us right." At 6th Avenue and 8th Street in Greenwich Village, Against Ad versity starred an artist with no arms. She stood for more than three hours, gripping colored chalk with her toes as she sketched a man with five heads on paper taped to the pavement.A crowd stood transfixed as she worked silently. Her Styrofoam cup became stuffed with dollar bills.“God bless you for your artistic talent,” a woman blurted out."Thank you,” the artist said quietly. For inventive costuming, there was The Bride. She stood on the corner of 42nd Street and Avenue of the Americas, wearing a stunning wedding gown.Closer inspection revealed she was wearing sneakers under the lace and was bopping subtly to music from headphones under her veil.Closer still — too close — and her eyes caught those of the audience, her hand whipped out, pressing a sales flyer for a bridal shop into its hand.Being solicited, the audience learned, can be the price of admission to a New Yorker’s private space. But that’s cheaper than a $45 Broadway ticket for Cats.Advertising helps you compare.CANADIAN ADVERTISING FOUNDATION GO GO GO 2 weeks — Air & Hotel Cartagena from 69900 Venezuela from 59900 RiO (Breaklast included) from 99900 Puerto Plata from 49900 Acapulco from 49900 Orient 10 Day Tour Hong Kong, Macao, China, Manila.Departure Nov.Dec.Feb.March.$1499°° Why just visit standard New York City attractions, such as the newly refurbished Statue of Liberty above, when you can take in theatrical performances at every street corner? From Hong Kong Tour only Call us for more details! *1499 00 20 Windsor Street, ™ ™ ' 48Z4 côte des Nei8es Sherbrooke OO TRAVEL Montreal — 822-3158 (514) 735-4526 ___________________ 1-800-361-9830 TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24,198ft-ll Book Now, Travel Later, Pay Later!
