The Pipers played one exhibition game so far, losing by 22 points to Séminaire Salésien.Galt’s first league game of the year is Wednesday, November 28,6:30p.m.at Bishop’s CoUege School. except for one.Stuart Gear takes over the reins of the senior girls team from Bill Rourke.Gear has been working with a bench of nine players. The mix of players has some newly promoted juniors and bantams which Gear coached back in 1988, where they posted a 43-2 record.“It’s an all rookie team except for Lori (Gear),” said her father and coach, after a team practice.“She (Lori) scored 70 per Cara Curry and Jessica Mills. And af- ter missing a year of basketball Robin Coleman is back playing ball.“We expect a lot from Robin this year,” Gear said.Showing good control and ball handling are guards Christina Simo, Erin Haller and Alison Reed.“All three girls have improved their dribbling,” Gear said.Besides Lori Gear racking up points, the ball could also be passed to Julie Heath.“If she gets the ball she can shoot for seven or eight baskets,” he said.Gear applauds his manager as much as his players."Carol (Matheson) does everything," he said “I don’t have to worry about the lineup, around the Bishop’s Col- lege School gymnasium almost blindfolded. That’s because the senior girls basketball coaches have never coached the team before. The tag-team duo of Turner and Bray have Rob Perrier, who teaches in Ontario now.The BCS senior girls squad for the upcoming season is composed of rookie and veteran players.Mi-chelynn Poirier, Valera Enrich, Jennifer Stormna, Laura Booth and Catherine Backinass form the veteran side of the roster, with others coming from the school’s feeder system. With the season officially started Turner hopes rookies will show signs of improvement.“We have one tall girl — Nadia Bendriss. She doesn’t have much experience,” said Turner.“We’re going to have to work on her.” Astrid Mooqulret, Sophie Vezi-na, Hillary Dunn, Erika Marosi, Sally Goodwin are just some of the other former junior players who have started to play senior-level basketball.“Astrid (Mooqulret) is new to the school,” Turner said.“Sophie Vezi-na came over from the volleyball team RICHMOND (BDM) — The Rich mond junior boys basketball team is taking on some double-duty this season.Don Nixon and his group of 12 players are scheduled to play in two leagues: The Eastern Townships Interscholastic Athletic Conference and the Canton de L ’Estrie Nixon said the main reason for playing in two leagues is a lack of playing time.‘It’s the only way to get enough games for the boys,” he said. The junior boys are scheduled for only eight regular-season ETIAC games and 14 in the French high-school league. The Richmond Raiders are in the northern division of the Canton de L’Estrie league and have to play home-and-home games with teams as far west as Granby and Sorel.Nixon said the travelling isn’t as bad as one might think.“It's no worse than going to Massey Va-nier.Drummond ville is closer to us than Sherbrooke is.” Among the team's 12 members, only five are returning players, of which four are probable starters.Jason Carson, Sean Nixon, Danny Davey, Mark Fortier and Hal Mel- lish round out the veteran portion of Richmond's junior boys club. The remaining seven rookies come from a mixed bag of experience.Five have graduated from the bantam ranks of basketball, two have never played and one is a good overall athlete.Even before season play has started, Nixon sees some players showing control on the court.“Jason Brock and Ricky Côté are both going to be excellent ball players,” Nixon said. The veteran Richmond basketball instructor said he doesn’t know the calibre of play his team will face this season.“1 don’t knowhow strong the French league is,” he said.“Last year in the ETIAC we finished second to Salésien. Our chances should be good in the ETIAC.Like other ETIAC coaches, Nixon wants his team to have a good time on the court regardless of the outcome of the season.“I just want the kids to have fun.We use the junior program as a development program.” The Raiders first ETIAC game is Wednesday, November 28, in Stanstead.Game time is 5:30 p.m.The 1990-91 it comes down to basketball — physical conditioning.Solomon, who used to coach girls basketball, is coaching his first boys team. The English teacher has been putting his team through vigorous training for the upcoming Eastern Townships Interscholastic Athletic Conference basketball season.“No doubt, we’ll be the best conditioned team in the ETIAC,” coach Solomon said.“That’s one of our strong points.” Unlike other Stanstead teams with low numbers, Solomon had 30 boys tryout for a spot on the team.“We’re a very young team," he said.Among the list of 14 players are two returning starters, Eric Chu and James Blouin.Blouin is the team’s centre and was sixth in the ETIAC top-ten scoring list, with 68 points.Chu is a returning guard and is looked upon as the team’s captain. On the rookie side, Alessandro DeMinico and Alan Chi are names to remember.Chi is a very fast and tough guard on the floor.Along with conditioning Solomon teaches the juniors the tools of the trade.“We have to go over the basics.Really, it’s a crash-course, like the seniors. We’ve got to get them used to playing ball.” Both the players and rookie coach Solomon have gotten used to each another.“It’s my first boys team I’ve coached and the adjus- tment has been fine,” he said.“It’s a disciplined team and everybody is adjusting well.” Last season, the Stanstead junior boys made the playoffs but lost a close 43 games last year in the Eastern Townships Interscholastic Athletic Conference and the Canton de L'Estrie league. Now the Pipers will chop that to 25 as they drop the Canton league to play in the ETIAC.The team will also play a couple of exhibition games in the United States.Four players from last year’s squad are back for another season of junior basketball.Lori Bradley, Lisa Williams, Robyn Stronach and Sandi Fisk are the team’s returning veterans.Davis said a few newcomers to the team are demonstrating some good basketball skills.“Erika Breck has surprised me, she’s playing very well,” he said.Lynn Robertson and Isabelle Lacroix are two other players doing well, he added. After losing out to Collège Sacré Coeur in the provincials Davis would like to emphasize team work.“We’re going to try and work on team play instead of individual play,” Davis explained.“This year we’re going spread out our attention and everybody will enjoy themselves,” he said.“I don’t care if we lose as long as everybody is enjoying themselves.” But Davis has his eyes set on an ETIAC championship banner and a possible provincial title.“This year I want to go to the provincials and it’d be nice to win the ETIAC and playoffs," he said.“They’re all obtainable goals but it’s going to take a lot of hard work.” Signs that their goal could be reached this season appeared when Laurie Bradley scored 24 points in 12 minutes last weekend, in the team’s first exhibition game of the season. The junior girls first game of the season is Wednesday, November 28 when they host Bishop’s College School at 4:30 p.m.Massey Vanier juniors hope to double last year’s record COWANSVILLE (BDM) — Bob Farr and Ralph McCully would like to see the Massey Vanier junior girls basketball team double last year’s record.Last season the junior girls won one game in the Eastern Townships Interscholastic Athletic Conference. One year later, the Massey Vanier Vikings have already accomplished one half of their goal — they thrashed Stanstead 96- 26 Thursday afternoon.“It was a decisive win,” said coach McCully.“We didn’t push it at all.We put all our girls in the game.” The Massey Vanier Vikings have the largest team in the league.McCully and Farr kept all 17 girls because of their desire to learn and play basketball."I’d like to see kids who want to play and to give them a chance,” McCully said.Only 12 of the 17 players dress per game. The remaining five keep track of statistics or man the score-board.Every game the coaching duo of McCully and Farr rotate five players, so everyone gets a chance to sport a Massey Vanier uniform.Seven players have basketball experience, having played junior ball last year, while the rest of the players are first-year students at the Cowansville high school.“We expect a lot of leadership from Jennifer Gobeille and Helene Carrière,” McCully said. The senior girls team decided to send one player down through the system to the junior squad and her presence was felt on the court Thursday night.“Erica Kemp didn’t look out of place,” said the junior coach.McCully said the junior program is a feeder system for the senior girls.“We’re trying to get some experience so when they go up to senior they’ll have a chance to crack the team,” McCully said.“We’re just a farm team for the seniors.” Best wishes & good luck to our schools * i The 1990-91 Massey Vanier Junior numbers are a problem for Ann Nixon. The Richmond Raiders junior girls basketball coach has less than a dozen players suiting up for basketball this season.Nixon, who coached the bantam program last season, has only two returning junior players: Karla Applebloom and Christine Edwards. Two bantam players graduated to the junior squad.“It’s quite an experienced team considering we only have 10 players,” said coach Nixon. With low numbers Nixon and her Raiders could be in for a long winter season.“I'm just hoping we’ll play well,” she said.“I hope they enjoy themselves, and with a little luck we’ll win some games.” Nixon said the junior program is regarded as a feeder system for the senior program.“It could be a tough year but it could help for the future.” Richmond’s first game is in coaches Terry Marlin and Ron Romanado.Regardless of a win, tie or loss, the BCS coaches want to make sure their players get to see action on the court.“We just played our first exhibition game and we lost 43-40,” said assistant coach Romanado.“All the kids played equally and everybody plays.” The BCS junior girls team is composed of 13 players, both veterans and rookies.Mikala Moss and Marie-Hélene Dubé return to the junior team as co-captains.The Crusaders have a couple of top players guarding the boards: Five-foot-ten Amy Nourse and rookie Marcia Collins.“We’re a team oriented have fun.Biology teacher Julie Senior has fielded a team of 15 players, 13 of which are rookies.Returning for another year of junior level basketball are guards Amy Emslie and Laura Channel).“It’s a brand new team,” Senior said.“Two girls have extremely good height. One girl has never played basketball before but is learning real fast." Senior said she doesn’t have to waste too much practice time on basics.“The majority of players have learned the game in gym class or on other teams. The last three weeks I’ve been teaching fundamentals and it’s amazing how fast they caught on,” said the first-year Spartan coach.Senior said she has one goal for the junior girls.“I want them to work hard but also have fun and enjoy the sport of basketball.” Last season, the Stanstead junior girls finished fourth in the Eastern Townships Interscholastic Athletic Conference. The junior girls first game will see them host BCS on Friday, November 23, at 4:30 p.m.The 1990-91 Stanstead College Junior Girls Basketball team: Front row Coach Julie Senior, Kim Quinn, Helen Li, Wendy Leung, Gabriela (left to right) — Rolio Valenzuela, Julie Beasse, Laura Channell, Amy Miccolo, Betty Anne Forward, Brenna Levin-Moscovitch and Dawn Emslie, Lubna Kharusi and Sarah Channell.Back row (left to right) — Thompson.Junior Boys Schedule JBl Sat.Nov.17 4:00 JB2 Wed.Nov.21 4.00 JB3 Thu.Nov.22 5:00 JB4 Sat.Nov.24 1:00 JB5 Wed.Nov.26 5:30 JB6 Fri.Nov.30 6:00 JB7 Sat.Dec 8 1 1:00 JB8 Thu.Dec.13 400 JB9 Mon.Dec.1 7 5:30 JBIG Sat Jan.12 1:00 JBl i Thu.Jan.17 4.00 JBl 2 Fri.Jan.25 4:00 JBl 3 Wed Jan.30 4:00 JBl 4 Wed.Feb.6 5:30 JB1S Wed, Feb.13 5:30 JBl 6 Wed.Feb.20 5:00 JB17 Sat.Feb.23 1 00 JBl 8 Wed.Feb.27 4:00 JBl 9 Wed.Mar.6 4:30 (Thetford @ Alexander Galt) (Stanstead # Thetford) Stanstead @> Massey Yanier ( Richmond @ Thetford) Richmond @ Stanstead Alexander Gelt Stanstead ( Thetford @ Stanstead) Alexander Galt @ Massey Yanier Alexander Galt
