Speaker at conference urged women to take the law into their own hands, to fight — and even kill men! “I love the idea of there being two sexes, don't you?” James Thurber The war between the sexes took another nasty turn last weekend. At a Banff conference on ‘Women in a Violent Society'organized by the Canadian Mental Health Association.the keynote speaker urged women to take the law into their own hands, fight back and even kill men - or have them killed."When the law fails, we cannot fail each other .” she trumpted."We are at war and need to win .l am asking you to stop men who beat women.get them jailed or get them killed." Counter violence with violence. No prisoners.A large bulletin board was set up for women to advertise the na mes and addresses of men they claim have raped them.No due process. No fuss about innocent until proven guilty. No proof needed, no defence allowed, and if lives and reputations are destroyed.too bad. This is war.Delegates were also encouraged to harass the Supreme Court judge who recently acquitted a man of rape by finding the woman had both consented and assisted - at least partially.Justice Minister Pat Carney had looked into that decision and found justice had been served but this does not satisfy the militant feminists.Similar outcry greeted last year's acquittal of a man accused of molesting a 3-year-old girl.Again the decision was examined and found just but the militants appear to demand every accusation result in conviction because all men are brutes and should be jailed or killed. Two weeks ago.in that other En- glish daily, Janet Bagnall reviewed the English translation of Polytechnique, Dec.6, the feminists’ vision of the Lepine massacre, claiming the original had been shrugged off by a sexist society. The theme is that it was not an isolated act by a maniac but symptomatic of men's hatred of liberated women.Men must therefore share collective responsibility.Who’s Who By Tadeusz Letarte "How is it possible to deny the sexual and orgasmic character of his act?” wrote one of the contributors.“An armed man, smiling with that force that comes from being all-powerful, who ejaculates his blasts of bullets, mortally penetrating these women’s bodies, bodies left full of holes, raped.” “There is a price for women’s liberation," wrote another, "and the price is death.” No.it isn’t.Few men were rash enough to say so.however, to deny the accusation and resent being tarred with Lepine’s brush.Still fewer dared reserve the right to despise the likes of Leona Helmsley.Winnie Mandela or Nancy Reagan."When a woman behaves like a man,” asked Dame Edith Evans, “why doesn’t she behave like a nice man?" * * * Last fall, the world’s first home for battered men was opened at Horsens, Denmark. The descen-dents of the fearsome Vikings were being physically and psychologically abused in the thousands by wives and girlfriends - mainly for their lack of masculinity.Last winter, a woman in Florida confessed to luring male drivers off the state highways and murdering seven because she hated all men.In New England, a schoolteacher was convicted of persuading her teenage lover to kill her husband. In Australia, three Lesbians pleaded guilty to stabbing a man to death so one of them could drink his blood.Last October, a professor at the University of California noted in class that the word 'pet'was no longer politically correct and animal activists insisted on 'companion animals’.When he remarked that the women gracing certain center-folds were not yet called ‘Penthouse Companion Animals’, fifteen women filed sexual harassment charges.Last May.Senator Lowell.Murray tried to explain why cabinet had declined an invitation to meet 100 members of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women in a public bearpit. He had tried before, he said, and was never allowed to finishing answering questions.“It was my impression some years ago, that the organization had been hijacked by extremists." The National Organization of Women is boycotting Random House and affiliates for publishing American Psycho.Their message is plain - publish something we deem offensive and we will punish you. Some time ago.a U S.Supre-mem Court justice pointed out that it is precisely the speech we deem offensive that must be protected because the rest doesn’t need it.Yet last weekend, in an article on Montreal’s sex signs in that other English daily, Janet Bagnall made the alarming declaration that freedom of speech must end at the point where women begin to be offended.* * * At the University of Waterloo last month, two male students held up signs at a hockey game saying “No means harder” and “Stop means please." The dean, declaring he “will not tolerate this kind of behaviour”, forced the students to appear before a women’s issue board, help prepare a pamphlet on rape and publish a written apology which included such forced insincerity as : "U is our hope that public concern regarding this incident will result in continued emphasis on this most important issue for both men and women." "After two intensive meetings with the two students,” reported Ernie Lucy, dean of students, “including a discussion of suspension or expulsion, I was convinced that suspension or expulsion would serve no useful purpose.I believe that they understood the seriousness of what they have done.” The head of the women’s issue board, however, did not believe the punishment was harsh enough.“We are an educational institution,” Dean Lucy explained, "and these students in the last few days, and in completing the projects they have agreed to undertake, will have an intensive educational experience.” It will be most particularly instructive on how a university can suppress the free expression of ideas and on how cheaply militant feminists value freedom of speech.Moral: Duck Teatro Vivo presents a play about abuse of human rights By Derrick Toth HALIFAX (CP) — In 1977.two Guatemalans named Edgar Flores and Carmen Samayoa formed a theatre company called Teatro Vivo.or theatre about life.Yet their work has everything to do with death.Their productions deal with oppression and the abuse of human rights in their Central American homeland, where a 30-year civil war has left more than 100.000 people dead and 40,000 missing. The play Ixok — currently tou- ring the Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Alberta — is based on the first-hand accounts of Guatemalan refugees."The main motivation we have for this play is the situation of people escaping through the jungle, because their villages have been massacred by the army,” Flores said in an interview prior to Wednesday night’s performance."And the majority of these refugees .are women and children. Why?Because the men have been killed or captured by the army, or Club de golf MassawippiCountry Club North Hatley, Quebec Green Fees: j.Weekdays.$20.E-: ¦ Weekends & holidays .$24.(toxes included) 842-2463 Electric carts can be rented.Limited number of memberships still available. For information / starting time*: 842-2463 some of them have joined the guerrilla movement to fight back the army.” Ixok — an indigenous word for woman, pronounced Ee-shawk — is a native Indian woman who flees her devastated village in search of security for herself and her child. The one-woman play, featuring a captivating performance by Samayoa, chronicles Ixok’s life through flashbacks to her childhood.marriage, separation and flight from violence.DOMINATED BY MEN You don’t need a degree in Third World studies to appreciate the play.In many ways, Ixok is Every-woman.She labors as hard as the men but makes less money. Her husband is a lush who invests their earnings in alcohol.Eventually she leaves him, only to find another kind of subservience as a maid to a rich woman. In Ixok's patriarchal society, women are unpaid slaves, sex objects and baby factories.Ixok wonders why she should marry — it only means forced intercourse and a bunch of babies who will likely die of malnutrition.Samayoa is an engaging actress.977 Main St.Ayer's Cliff Res: 838-5466 Open: 11 to 2 p.m.5 to 9 p.m.Thurs.thru Sunday SEAFOOD & STEAK is our speciality! and she develops an immediate rapport with her audience.Laughter ripples through the theatre when she bounds into the crowd, hands out hankies to the men and proclaims: “Now it is men’s turn to cry.” Ixok even sends up North American women. The w'omen of her world are obviously in need of a real revolution. So she’s pleased to find an article in Cosmopolitan magazine that also speaks of revolution — only she’s not quite sure what to make of the revolutionary new way to battle cellulite.SEEN AS ANIMALS Flores and Samayoa are ultimately motivated by a desire to sensitize people to the plight of Guatemalans.particularly the native people who remain virtually powerless despite making up 60 per cent of the population.“The dominant ideology says Indians are not important, they are almost not like persons,” says Flores.“They are almost animals. In Guatemala if you say to someone: ’You are an Indian’ .it’s an insult.” The two actors, who fled Guatemala in 1980 and now live in exile in Paris, do not want to be seen as solicitors for Third World aid.4555 TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.MAY 17 '! Borderline Harmony to perform at benefit Yet to be named group will be joining Borderline Harmony for a fund-raising concert at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Vermont. From left to right: Perry Beaton, bass; Elaine Bachon, autoharp; David Vachon, fiddle and mandoline; Del Springate, guitar and Ron Phendler, guitar." - LJ1 7» By Jay Schmidt SHERBROOKE — The singing group Borderline Harmony does not live up to its name. There is nothing borderline about the harmony these Townshippers and Vermonters produce. The members meet every other Tuesday on the Quebec-Vermont border in Derby Line. They will be the hosts of a benefit concert for Derby Line’s Unitarian Universalist Church Friday, May 24 at 8 p.m.Borderline Harmony’s leader, John Henderson, says, “The church lets us use the space, so we thought it would be a nice gesture to organize and host a concert for them.” About two dozen singers, three-quarters of whom are Canadians, make Borderline Harmony the fun.spiritually uplifting and melodious group it is.The group will perform about six Sacred Harp songs at the concert.SACRED HARP MUSIC Sacred Harp music is written in specially shaped notation corresponding to the syllables of the contemporary major scale: fa so la fa sola mi fa.Each syllable has a different shape.Singers learn songs in shape notes first and then learn the words.New England singing masters used this method in the late 18th and 19th centuries to teach music reading skills.Borderline Harmony sings its songs flat out, with no attempt at subtle dynamics or tempo shifts. The result is powerful, vigorous four-part harmony.Formed in November 1987 by Henderson and his wife Pippa Hall, the group’s number grew through word of mouth. The age range of the group spans 40 years and sin- gers include a teacher, a carpenter, a doctor and an apple farmer. The sheer enjoyment and community spirit that arise from shape note singing draw and keep the members together.Borderline Harmony does not perform regularly because Sacred Harp music is participation rather than performance-oriented.Benefit concerts are an exception.“It’s more for fun, and there's less pressure that way,” says Henderson.Ogden resident Annie Dunn is one of the group’s original members.“I got hooked immediately,” she said, "and now I’m a fanatic.” John Pratt, a former BCS choirmaster, has been in the group for almost two years.‘Tve never enjoyed any choir as much as this one,” he said, "and I’ve sung in some good choirs.” ENERGY AND SPIRIT Pratt said the music and the group create an energy and spirit — one that Borderline Harmony hopes to pass on to its audience.Henderson, Hall, and George Foster, another Borderline Harmony member, will also perform at the benefit concert with a group called Six or So.Hall sings and plays dulcimer, Henderson plays guitar, and Foster, a sculptor from Way’s Mills, plays washtub bass.Six or So also includes Phyllis Robbins who sings and plays guitar and autoharp. Her husband Walter is the band’s fiddle player and Lennoxville’s Tim Dougherty sings and plays guitar and flute.North Hatley’s Peter Weldon plays mandolin.Members of the socially-conscious Six or So have been playing together in their spare time for the past three years. They always perform at benefits and the diversity of their music is well-suited to these concerts.Their specialties include American folk.Celtic and Cajun music and songs with a political message.GUEST PERFORMERS Two professional musicians will also entertain at the Friday concert.Stanstead’s Allyn Harris and Peter Mendieta have created new music together since 1983.Their new age style evolved from a mixture of classical, jazz and popular music influences.Harris studied composition and performance at Concordia University, and Mendieta, who is originally from India, worked as a club and studio musician in Vancouver for many years. Both musicians freelance for Sesame Street and teach in Stanstead.Harris and Mendieta produce their own albums through their company.Crystal Creek Recordings, and promote recordings by other independent musicians and composers. The duo has produced three albums of original music: Cycles, Pools of Light and Lifeline.Their music reflects their love of nature.A fourth group, a newly-formed Townships quintet, will be making its debut performance at the benefit concert. The group has yet to decide on a name. The band features Lennoxville’s Perry Beaton on bass and Ron Phendler on acoustic guitar.Alto Del Springate plays guitar, and soprano Elaine Vachon from Tomifobia plays autoharp.Vachon’s husband David, a baritone, plays mandolin and fiddle.ROOTS IN FOLK According to Beaton, the blend of voices in the group is stunning. He said the music they play is hard to define, but has its roots in folk.Among the seven songs the group has prepared for the evening are: one gospel song, two love songs and a Del Springate original in celebration of harvest.Friday's concert line-up includes Townshippers of different backgrounds, ages and musical styles.Their hope is to bring together an equally diverse group of supporters for the benefit of Derby Line's Unitarian Universalist Church See What’s On for more details.Mother can’t find her way through a music store By Marlene Orton (CPi — In my wallet is a dogeared.dirty piece of paper folded next to the photos of married. We delayed supper one evening until after her baby daughter was born to the great joy of Big Bird, Elmo and the gang. We’ve seen every Walt Disney film since 1983 and we think Def Leppard is spelled wrong.Well, my children are growing up.And so am I.I’ve stopped cutting the food on my plate into tiny pieces before eating. Now I eat my meals sitting in a chair instead of slopping around under the table with a bucket trying to clean up milk puddles.I’m catching on to life beyond Cookie Monster.I actually saw Kevin Costner in an R-rated movie.ON MY OWN I finally own a U2 album and even got a personal tour through the newest music store in town by pleading complete ignorance because I’ve listened to Mother Goose for so long.I've reclaimed the living room, replacing the much-tortured hou-seplants that had been dug up, pulled down or force-fed apple juice. My greatest achievement, though, is learning to sit in the bathroom all alone. No more communal nature calls with two tots in tow and a lonesome mutt scratching at the door.I don’t have to share my cosmetics with curious little boys any more — although when I’m not looking No.2 son pretends my precious bottle of Chanel is a room deodorizer.I’m allowed to bathe and dress on my own without having to keep an eye on a pair of elves playing 20, sometimes 40 and 60 questions on anatomy.Nighttime is reasonably peaceful again, interlopers whimpering for water or a mislaid teddy bear.GET A SITTER I’m dating now too.Once a month, Prince Charming and I head out alone to eat at a place that has cardboard menus.Getting out alone, it seems, is more important than I realized.Dr.Bill James, an Ottawa pediatrician, says leaving the children with a reliable babysitter for a few hours each week is a good idea. It’s healthy and as necessary as spending time together as a family.says James, a spokesman for the Canadian Pediatric Society. He and his wife have reserved Thursday evenings for each other since their three daughters — now young women — were babies.James says getting out is especially difficult for single parents who have no support group or a nearby relative.Families with both parents working outside the home also feel a special commitment to spend all their possible spare time with the children, he adds. But adults need some time alone, even if it’s just for a walk or to grab a burger.“Once the kids go to bed.this is a good time.’’ says James.“I have suggested to a lot of parents to just bring in a sitter for two or three hours.'’ Living and working among adults is still a challenging enterprise for me.I struggle constantly against the temptation to tuck in a colleague’s loose shirt or remind people to tie their shoelaces so they don’t trip. But once every few weeks, I head for the music shop, pull out my list and nose around for something totally awesome.Dude.How to be a Local Hero Look for ways you can volunteer and make your community a better place to live.Find out where your friends WEEK—FRIDAY, MAY 17.1991 Cannes crowd is wild for Madonna! Russia has its By Mimi Tompkins CANNES, France (CP) — When Madonna arrived for the screening of her new film.Truth or Dare, earlier this week she fought her way through a Cannes Festival mob scene worthy of those that once greeted stars like Catherine Deneuve and Gina Lollobrigida. But the Material Girl had all the attention to herself. With a shortage of big-name stars at this year’s festival, and with starlets covering themselves up on the beach in the chilly weather, glamor here is in short supply. The Cannes Festival this year seems to be stripped down to what it really is — one of the most important film festivals in the world, where wheeling and dealing means non-stop work around the clock.“There’s no sitting around the beach here,” says Bill House, who heads the Toronto operation of Telefilm Canada.“It’s very tiring. You really have to work.” The population of this Riviera town has bulged to 50.000 from 10.000 during the festival.Only 20.000 people are officially invited to sell and buy films, or attend screenings. The rest flood the hotels and restaurants, gape at anyone who appears famous and stroll along the boardwalk.DRAWS COMPARISON “Going to Cannes is like going to Coney Island.” says Catherine Tait, the Canadian cultural attache in Paris who will become executive director of the Independent Feature Project in New York next month.“Everyone who is important is here, but so are a whole lot of hangers-on and exhibitionists who turn the festival into a circus.” When the festival began in 1947 it was relatively discreet affair with the small screening sessions followed by intimate dinners. In 1955, only two American journalists were present.“It was like being on an elegant cruise ship,” remembers Lucius Barre, who was a publicist with the festival for 18 years.Today, more than 3,000 press people from around the world have been given accreditation to see the more than 450 films being shown.A dinner thrown by a film company means more than 500 guests and most of the food snapped up early. Many professionals at Cannes don't even have time to see the films. With eight official screenings a day, a film critic will be lucky to catch two.FAME HELPS Being famous makes it easier to have a good time at the festival.Canadian filmmaker.Atom Egoyan, here for the premiere of his latest film The Adjuster is having a much better time this year than he did two years ago when he came with Speaking Parts."It was really depressing,” he says.“I had a room in a bad hotel far away that was noisy, with the window facing a wall.“This year I’m in an elegant hotel on the beach. It makes a difference.” Egoyan, like other independent filmmakers, questions the artistic value of the festival, but he enjoys its contradictions.“It forms it’s own world.” he says.“There’s a contrast between the sunny beach world outside, and the movie world inside.” Despite the flurry of cocktail parties, business at the festival is the priority.Being present at the festival is essential for exposure to the European market.“I do as much business here in 10 days as I normally do in six months,” says Rene Bonnell.the head of the film production unit at France's movie channel, Canal Plus.Madonna is not in Cannes just to be seen. She is also presenting her new movie Truth or Dare.People send tapes to singer in hope of making it big ST.AUGUSTINE'S BEACH.ker can take one thing for granted : Fla.(CP) — No matter where he people will always send him tapes travels in the world.Roger Whitta- of songs they’d like him to record. The Biggest Secret in the Northern Kingdom of Vermont llll! TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.MAY 17.5 reacts against the destruction Trottier By Caterine Cheng MAGOG — Memories of her childhood days spent in beautiful, thick forests fill Monique Trot-tier’s mind as she speaks with sadness about the destruction of our woodland. For Trottier.who owns an art gallery and makes artwork from recycled material.growing up on a farm in Oka meant living in an imaginary world where the gigantic and mysterious trees were her playmates, her confidants, her friends.“The forest, a complex and beautiful mixture of living beings, stores many special moments of the time I spent playing with Mother Nature. The trees that filled the forest accompanied me in a fantasy world," she says. After finishing high school, she left her magical kingdom to pursue secretarial studies at the St.Ann Academy in Montreal and start ‘real life’.The strict nuns at the private school taught her to be disciplined.efficient, and hardworking.“I completed the equivalent of a three-year secretarial program in one year.Employers came directly to our school to hire us so I had a job upon graduation " During that time, she slowly grew accustomed to the city but returned ’home’ every weekend; by then, the forest had become an oasis of peace, a place where she could regenerate herself. For seven years, Trottier worked as a secretary in Montreal.Butthe job just wasn't enough. Her thirst for knowledge and her continual desire to grow pushed her to take English classes in the evenings.Furthermore, since she had started to develop her creative abilities at an early age and had kept busy experimenting with handicraft, sewing and cooking, she wanted to broaden her artistic interests. She took weaving classes for two years. It was then that she rediscovered her passion for art.She spent many evenings weaving shawls, scarves, berets and curtains using natural fibres such as coton, linen, silk, and wool. What fascinates Trottier about artwork is the process, “the creation.the manipulation, alteration — according to our personality.” she explains. She says that the materials artists use are the same, but Trottier.having an intimate tête-à-tète with one of her sculptures that looks like “Madonna and Child".the combination of models and colors used are personal choices.So.for a while.Trottier was a full-time employee and a part-time artist. And as the days passed, she found out that what she wanted to do was the exact opposite. She realized that her job didn't meet her needs.“It didn't offer the freedom and independence I needed. There was no room for advancement either.” “I like to do as I please but wasn't able to work independently because I had a nine-to-five schedule that restricted my time.” When she heard about Concordia University’s fine arts program, she left the workplace to go back to school. At that time, nothing held her back from pursuing her heart’s desire since she was not yet committed to a family life. While attending classes, she immediately felt at home.“It was exactly what 1 wanted to do: to explore, to discover, to learn more about art.It wasn't difficult for me to study because 1 enjoyed it.And 1 liked being among the young and old.” When she strolled in the park with her husband — whom she met and married while at school — she noticed that acid rain had started to destroy the forest. The sight of dead trees, or trees razed to expand an area of cultivation, bothered her.She was devastated to see pollution invading the natural environment and realized she had become very sensitive to the feelings of Mother Nature.TAKING ACTION Trottier’s reaction toward the deterioration of the environment was soon reflected in her artwork. After taking courses in sculpture, painting and drawing, she took a paper-making course and did a major in fibres and paper.of trees She began making her own paper by using recycled material: denim.coton or linen clothes, and paper (such as computer paper or yellow pages from the phone book).Upon graduating in 1986, she won an award for her work with sculpture, ceramics and fibres.Trottier combines her own paste and her own moulds to make fragile two-dimensional reliefs and free-standing sculptures (some measuring over six feet high), in the shape of fossils or tree bark. Her works were all painted black at first, symbolizing death and decay. But recently she added acrylic paint to give them a sign of hope because, after all, nature is the source of all life, she says.Trottier says her works are created so that people can look at them and have an intimate tête-à-tête with each one.She entitles her works in ways to send philosophical and environmental messages, using words such as Silence noir (dark silence), Déchirure (tear).Blessure (wound).Vestige (trace).Cicatrice (scar). She thus draws a direct parallel between human beings and nature.EXHIBITIONS AND GALLERY So far.Trottier has displayed her works twice at the Horace Gallery in Sherbrooke and twice in Montreal. She also participated in various collective displays since 1984 and will be present at the Village Culture! in Magog this weekend, showing her works and giving a workshop on paper-making.She also gives private, two-day intensive courses to groups of five, during the summer and fall seasons.Trottier, who admits that “everything happened so quickly this past year,” has owned and ran Galerie Art Plus since December 1990.The art gallery, her workshop, and her husband's office all merge together in a beautiful Victorian house in Magog. In addition to exhibiting her own works, she also displays paintings and sculptures from a selection of artists, from Montreal and the Eastern Townships. She gives preference to contemporary artists who are launching their career, and not necessarily to those who are environmentally conscious.Through all her works, Monique Trottier gives life and emotions to trees, reminding us of their fragility and their vulnerability. 6—TOWNSHIPS late '70s.But these days A1 Waxman is hobnobbing with real royalty. On Wednesday, the former sitcom king was scheduled to have lunch with the Queen — at a gala event in Washington.D.C.celebrating British films. He was there as chairman of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. Then, it was back to Toronto, where the burly 56-year-old actor is quickly attaining regal status behind the camera, too. He's currently up for a daytime Emmy award for his direction of Maggie's Secret, a CBS After School Special that has already won kudos for its treatment of alcohol abuse. And this Friday his latest directorial effort, a feature film called White Light, will open in movie theatres across Canada. The past decade-and-a-half have been rewarding for the busy actor-director.WINS AWARDS He won two ACTRA awards for his Canadian TV wrork, co-starred as a gruffly lovable top cop on CBS’s Cagney and Lacey and chocked up dozens of credits directing for the small screen.Along the way.he's been frequently honored for his considerable charitable work and was even asked to become Canada’s consul general to Los Angeles — a .job he politely refused. Now, the film’s the thing — in particular, the movie White Light. It’s about an undercover cop who during a brush with death is briefly projected into the afterlife, where he falls in love with a beautiful woman. After coming back to life, the policeman searches for her — and finds out she’s connected to a drug lord he’s been pursuing.‘This is the kind of movie where you have to check reality at the cloakroom,” says Waxman, who added that movie-goers are generally willing to do just that.White Light’s release follows on the heels of films such as Ghost.Flatliners and Defending Your Life that have explored the possibility of life — and love — after death The $2.5-million movie from Brightstar Films, written by former film critic Ron Base, gets its title from an image apparently witnessed by many people who have almost died.FOLLOWS TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY.MAY 17.1991-7 Estefan’s extraordinary comeback In her new album.Into the Light, Gloria Estefan 's music is Books versus golden glove GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta.(CP) — Willie deWit says it hasn’t been easy chucking his punching bag and golden gloves for the law books he hopes will make him a criminal lawyer some day.On the other hand, the former Canadian heavyweight boxing champion says studying law is a whole lot easier on the mind and the body than the ups and downs atid ins and outs of the boxing world."It's a lot easier to keep your nose in a book than it is to be out running or pounding a heavy bag, ” says the native of Grande Prairie, who gave up boxing three years ago.“As far as things in school as taking tests that are supposed to be pressure filled — that's a piece of cake compared to some of the things I’ve been through in boxing." DeWit was a Canadian version of he Great White Hope, a tough, white heavyweight boxer who crashed onto the world boxing scene in 1984 when he won a silver medal at the Olympics. He turned professional with great promise, but was brought along slowly. He fought few big-name opponents until he ran into Smokin’ Bert Cooper in Regina in February 1987.He was knocked out, and so, essentially, was his career. He retired in 1988 and.after a while, decided on a career in law.It was something he always had in the back of his mind.“When you’re 28 or 29 and you have to go back to school, it’s not, that easy,” said DeWit.“If you’ve had some notoriety, you tend to not want to make the sacrifices later on.“You feel like you’ve paid your dues, which you really haven’t.” DeWit set about to do just that.FIRE STOKED He has just completed a two-year pre-law course at Grande Prairie Regional College. Now 29, he will begin the first semester of a three-year course in the College of Law at the University of Alberta in Edmonton this fall.DeWit said he always knew boxing would only be a short-term endeavor and he had to set some realistic goals."You’ve got to start thinking about what you’re going to do when your career is over and most of these guys haven’t got a clue.” Armed with eight- and nine-point grade averages on the college’s nine-point scale during his two yearsin pre-law, and accompanied by wife Suzan and their three children, deWit is moving to Edmonton this fall.He has been active in open forums on such weighty matters as the recent Citizen's Forum on Canada’s Future. Some have suggested deWit may have political ambitions. He shrugs them off.“We can all sit around and complain about things that are happening that we don’t really appreciate.but if you don’t get out there and do something we should keep our mouths shut.” By Sunil Mahtani In one moment, Gloria Estefan s entire world had changed. Some of the happiest changes in her life have occurred in just a moment, like the time she sang with the Miami Latin Boys at a wedding reception and impressed the local band enough to accept her into their fold and change their name to the Miami Sound Machine, or the moment fellow band member, and future husband.Emilio kissed her for the very first time and she knew he was the right man for her. But, not all moments are happy.Estefan lived through years of deep pain when she helped take care of her father before he died from a neurological disease. And, on March 20,1990.she experienced agonizing pain again — to find her world had changed once more.It was during a successful U.S.tour in support of the hit album, Cuts Both Ways. The concert set was full of hits: dance numbers that put a contemporary spin on Latin rythms and ballads that showed Estefan to be a singer/ songwriter of increasing range and depth. Her tour bus was caught in a Pennsylvania snowstorm on Interstate 80 and was stopped behind a stalled tractor-trailer.Suddently, they were hit from behind by a second speeding semi and the bus crashed forward into the truck.Estefan.who was asleepon the couch, was thrown to the bus floor.“I felt disconnected from my body,” she recalls, “and there was excruciating pain when I tried to move my legs and feet. Here it is,’ I thought, 'the nightmare, the other shoe falling after this streak where everything was going so well’.” Estefan began a world tour in support of her latest album.Into The Light, whose first single, “Coming Out Of The Dark,” reflects on her recovery and the outpouring of love directed towards her after the accident. An operation had attached a pair of 8-inch steel rods to the base of her spinal cord, her back muscles had been severed during the procedure and the skin on her legs burned to the touch.Estefan says within days of the accident, she made a mental commitment to be back to normal within a year. This determination to put the tragedy well behind her and bounce back quickly is in part due to her experiences taking care of her ill father as a child.Gloria Fajardo was born in Cuba on September 1, 1957 and came to the U.S.with her parents before her second birthday. Her father, Jose, took part in the Bay of Pigs invasion and was captured and imprisoned in Cuba for more than two years.Upon his return, he joined the Army and went to Vietnam. He returned in 1968 and, after twelve bedridden years, died from a degenerative neurological disease which doctors attributed to Agent Orange.“I knew all the realities of living with a person that’s in a wheelchair,” says Estefan.“I knew muscles atrophy if you dont use them right away and I couldn't use them, so right away I really pushed at the beginning to get my body working so that 1 wouldn’t lose even the minutest amount of muscle tone.” As soon as Estefan saw some progress in her physical health, she began working on her music again, as early as three months after the accident.“It gave me something to look forward to,” she remembers, “a part of the day when I could stop geing ‘the injured one’.” The result is “Into The Light,” an album filled with songs of love and hope, co-produced by Emilio Estefan.Jorge Casas and Clary Os-twald.On the first single, “Coming Out Of The Dark".Gloria sings of the loving support of her husband, her son Nayib (who suffered a broken collarbone in the accident) and her legion of fans who helped her more that they’ll ever know.“I just could not feel down." she explains, “I used everybody’s prayers — I could feel that energy focused on me, and I used it.Most performers have to die to elicit such an outpouring of love.I was lucky to feel that, and it will touch me for the rest of my life.” Into The Light is unlike the Gloria Estefan we're used to hearing. She has a different sound on this release, a bit retro, a bit rockier and the Latin strains, usually a staple in her music, are not as pronounced. On March 1, she kicked off her 1991 Into The Light Tour in her beloved hometown, Miami.“There was no way I could have started anywhere else,” she states.“I’ve just felt so much support and love that Miami had to be the first show.” In fact, Miami and its citizens have been supporting Estefan and her band since the beginning of their career. In 1983, before the rest of America even heard of them, the mayor decided to name a street Miami Sound Machine Boulevard! The evolution of Miami Sound Machine began in 1973, when Cuban-born Emilio Estefan was working in the marketing division of Bacardi. For fun, he played the accordion in local restaurants for tips and later formed the Miami Latin Boys, a trio that played local gigs. One of these gigs was a wedding reception and two of the guests attending were Gloria Fajardo and her mother.Emilio asked Gloria to sing a few numbers with the band. She vowed them and he asked her to join the group.Since she was working on her psychology degree at the University of Miami, Gloria decided to do it part-time and collaborated on songs and recording with the group.By the time she graduated in 1978, the band was a full-time job for Gloria. That same year, she married Emilio, her first boyfriend. At the beginning of its career, Miami Sound Machine was basi- cally a Latin music attraction capable of selling out Panama City stadiums while remaining virtually unknown to American pop audiences. The band recorded a few bilingual albums, with one side English and one side Spanish, before their first crossover hit, “Dr.Beat”, in 1984.It hit #6 in Britain and #1 in Holland! The combined sales of the three albums that contained these singles, Primitive Love (1985), Let It Loose (1987) and Cuts Both Ways (1989) not total 8 million copies in the United States alone and another 9 million worldwide. Two videos.Evolution and Homecoming Concert, capture the sound and energy of the group in concert. There have certainly been some very special moments in Gloria Estefan’s life. One treasured memory is the night her relationship with Emilio changed from friendship to love.“It was July 4, 1976, easy to remember ’cause it was a bicentennial,” she recalls.“We were playing (in a venue) that’s shaped like a boat.and it was really hot in there, it was packed and I was going to get some air, so he says.Til go with you’.So we went up to the third deck, and there was nobody up there, it was way at the top, and they were shooting off fire- different this time: a bit retro, a hit rockier.works .and he says to me, ‘You know, today’s my birthday’, and I go, ’What a coincidence, you were born on Independence Day.you never mentioned this before’.He goes, Yeah, it is.it's my birthday, nobody’s said anything 'cause I really didn’t want anybody to know’, and I go.Oh.happy birthday’, and he goes.Well, aren’t you going to give me a birthday kiss?’ and I go.Well.’ He goes, ‘Just on the cheek’ and I go ‘Alright, I’ll give you a birthday kiss.’ “So.he puts his cheek there and right when I went to kiss him.he turned his face, the sneak." As it turns out, Emilio was lying to get the kiss and his birthday is really March 4.“But, that was very romantic,” says Gloria, “I’ll always remember that, and that turned everything around, that one kiss right there.” “Turning things around” and “beating the odds” are phrases that have been used to describe Estefan and her extraordinary comeback. And deservedly so.for she is an extraordinary woman who has put a shattering accident behind her and moved on.The drama is over now In the span of Gloria Estefan’s life and career, it was just one moment in time. 8—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.MAY 17.1991 TRAVEL Uplands Museum: Lennoxville’s cultural centre Thanks to Mrs.Muriel Brand, Margaret Brand's mother, who was President of the Historic Society in 1987, Uplands Museum now provides an opportunity for local artists and photographers to exhibit their work 1\ ^ r-it mmm v- The following is the last of a series of stories the Record will publish this week about local points of interest. The articles were prepared by the Greater Sherbrooke Tourism Office as part of Tourism Awareness Week, which began Monday."Who lives here?” is the question most frequently asked by visitors for the first time to the Uplands Museum. The warmth of this gracious neo Georgian home and its furnishings belies the fact that it is a museum. In fact, this is a museum with a difference because it is alive with activity for it also serves as a cultural centre for Len-noxville and the outlying community.Located at 50 Hark St.Lennox-ville.with parking facilities from Speid Street, Uplands, as the property was named in the English tradition by its original owner Barney Paddon.consists of over four acres of lawn, flowering shrubbery and woodland. The house built in 1802 and the recently restored hundred year old barn provide facilities for a wide range of exhibitions and activities.Uplands Museum is owned jointly by the Lennoxville-Ascot Historical and Museum Society and the Ville de Lennoxville. Its primary function as a museum is to preserve and interpret the history of the Eastern Townships with a particular emphasis on the Lennoxville-Ascot area through historical exhibitions and a small archives. The summer exhibition will deal with the history of educational institutions of the area. The museum gallery provides an opportunity for artists and photographers to exhibit their work.Art and photography exhibitions change each month and activity-coordinator Margaret Brand encourages new local artists to participate.Currently the work of photographer Hubert Vallée, a new comer to Sherbrooke, is on display in exhibition ‘ Sequences Couleurs Suites”.The work of a Montreal Chinese artist will be featured in the summer.Pottery, articles of wood from recycled Christmas trees and drums made by Jason Krpan of Georgeville are also on display in other exhibition rooms.A photographer Rodrigue Belanger also continues through the month of May.Uplands provides a variety of services to the community. It is the monthly meeting place for the Lennoxville-Ascot Historical Society as well as other organizations.Small concerts, afternoon teas, dining receptions, press conference, wedding receptions and other private parties also occur here.Catering service is available and afternoon tea or morning coffee will be served to bus tours by prearrangement.Children's theatre organized by the Cultural Committee of the Ville de Lennoxville and offered as part of its recreational program is scheduled in the restored barn for this summer.Giant pumpkin growers are now planning to display their products at a fall pumpkin festival in October In September 1987 the Ville de Lennoxville and the Historical Society became the joint owners of the property. The Historical Society was responsible for the restoration and renovation of the fourteen room house.Much of the work was done by volunteers, many of whom were retired.Bishop’s University students also helped on weekends.Practically all the furnishings have been donated by members of the community. It is well worth a visit to see what a small communi- ty can achieve when it set; Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Moliere’s amorous romp The School for Wives; the English version of Les Belles soeurs, Tremblay’s rough-edged comedy about a woman who wins a million trading stamps; and An Enemy of the People, Henrik Ibsen’s still-timely drama about pollution, politics and principles. There’s a five-play lineup at the 490-seat Tom Patterson Theatre, formerly the Third Stage now renamed to honor the Stratford journalist who founded the festival.First up is the risky Timon of Athens, Shakespeare’s denunciation of greed and disloyalty which is seldom performed — this is its first Stratford showing in almost 30 years. Then comes the world premiere of Homeward Bound, a Canadian play by Hayes; The Rules of the Game, Luigi Pirandello’s darkly comic examination of love and infidelity; The Knight of the Burning Pestle, a newly cast repeat of last season’s successful comedy about shop folk in London, again adapted by Hayes ; and Love Letters, a two-actor play about a delicate, life- long dialogue through letters.TICKETS UP On the non-artistic side, the Stratford Festival — in the black for the last four seasons — faces with “immense apprehension” its first season with the federal goods and services tax, says William.A top ticket is now $46.50 (GST included), up from $39.50 last season.William is directing three plays this season — Hamlet.Treasure Island and Love Letters. He says he reads a bit of Hamlet every day — “Does that strike you as odd?” — has done the title role twice, appeared in other roles in the play four times and directed it twice.“It’s a love affair of some kind, I suppose.” The Stratford Festival officially opens its 39th season on May 27.Artistic director David William hopes critics who complain the festival doesn't have enough Canadian content and female roles are quieted by this season’s wide-ranging.14-show lineup.
