the 40 cents CLOUDY Soviets take armored step back By Jim Sheppard MOSCOW (CPi — Communist hardliners, backed by the Soviet army, ousted President Mikhail Gorbachev in a bloodless pre-dawn coup Monday.The country's new leadership.headed by former vice-president Gennady Yanayev, immediately declared a six month state of emergency "in some parts of the Soviet Union" to prevent what it cal led a national catastrophe."
