I said.Papa squinted at me over the table, scratching his chin with his thumbnail. Then he said.“Huh?" "Knives." I said."The sign on the door when we came in." He thought about that. Most of the men carried good steel belly-slitting gut-spilling knives on their belts."The sign did not say you couldn’t bring a knife into the bar." I said."No." he said, musing, it didn't." ANOTHER SWIG I took another swig and got ready to say my peace.“Life magazine." I said, leaning forward."A long time ago. There was an interview with James Jones." “From Here to Eternity." he said."No." I said."I think it was the other one.The one came after " “Oh." he said.He looked quickly over his shoulder as a burst of laughter came from a nearby table. They were talking dirty over there and Papa didn't like them talking dirty around the barmaid in the red dress, although she was talking dirtiest of all."I was young." I persisted, "trying to learn how to write truly and cleanly.I wanted to know the meaning of life and found it in Life magazine under a photograph of James Jones." I could still see it in my mind — the picture on the cover w ith the red border and the square white letters in the top left corner Life, it had said. And inside the picture of James Jones with the caption underneath."What did it say?" said Papa.I looked him straight in the eye.“Every man should have enough knife to defend himself against every other man." Papa scratched his stubble slowly and thoughtfully, and then he took a long slow swallow of beer before answering."James Jones said that?" I nodded.Without looking at it.Papa picked up the pitcher in his big right hand and refilled both mugs.We watched the white foam spill over and make bigger puddles on the table."That bothered me." I said.“That's bothered me ever since." Papa burped."What if he had a gun?" I said, wanting him to understand."Eh?" "What if you had enough knife but the other man had a gun?" Papa thought hard about that and I thought about it too and about how good it was sitting together altera hard day in the primeval lorst discussing Literature and Life and what it means to he a Man and I knew that it was never going to get any better than this.Ever.550,000 people work hard top Cana endan species. You can help too.Foi more intomiation contact: ^ Canadian Wildlife Federation 1673 Carling Avenue Ottawa.Ontario K2A 321 (6133 725-2191 noons hues, hkeblues a hi hssokies Poêles et Jardins, ear.Regency 591 Knowlton Road Knowlhm, Québec |0E 1Y'0 (514) 243-5161 BAR COUNTRY BRETAGNE Featuring Ji Little foot” Band playing in November Friday and Saturday nights Country Music Every Sunday afternoon during November with "Longshot” Darts every Saturday afternoon with Free Supper Route 143 S, Waterville 837-2323 The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—NOVEMBER 1-8, 1991—3 TALK OF THE TOWNSHIPS Marina Piccinini Marina I'iccinini: "I work wore than people who have a V-5joh.It's the kiml of work that yon can't let go.even in your sleep." to perform at Centennial By Sunil Mahtuni Canadian flutist Marina I’ic-cinini and Swiss-born pianist Andreas Haefliger will perform a special concert on Friday, NoV.8 at Bishop's University's Centennial Theatre at 8.In a telephone interview from her home in New York City.Piccinini said the concert is composed of sonatas to mark two celebrations which take place this year."It's celebrating the death of Mozart, the bicentennial.17!'l-1991, " she said."Then there's one short aria by Alexander Nevsky, and a sonata by Prokofiev to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth." Camirand said. Some of the flowers arc even bought from specialized floral companies in Ontario and kept for exhibition, however, it is Camirand who decides which flowers will be chosen for the show.He said the only criterion that is used for selection is variety: the flowers and plants must be bright, beautiful and charming."In the fall everything is dead or dying and winter is worse: people like to see the pretty colors in the winter because it lifts one's spirit." Camirand said.Over 2000 chyrsan'hamums are expected to be sold during the exhibition and the money donated to the Sherbrooke University Hospital Foundation.HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT Foundation president Ray- ^ CANADIAN SOCIETE - jmûLAr CANCER CANADIENNE [Oty .SOCIETY DU CANCER 4^* v cVct GIVE GENEROUSLY mond Comtois said the money will be used to buy new small equipment for the hospital."Although we recieve government grants for specialized and costly equipment, every year the CHUS has thousands of small medical equipment that needs to be replace." Armstrong and others say travellers should do some research before a trip and.during the trip, adhere to the code of ethics for tourists.“I would encourage any traveller going anywhere, regardless of their reasons, to do a little bit of research." says Kristine W'hite, editor of a California-based newsletter called Travel Alternatives that advocates responsible tourism."Even people who are interested strictly in beach vacations could ask their travel agents who owns the hotel and try to stay at one that’s locally owned, that puts more money into the local pocket." “At least research where you 'can stay so that the people who live there are going to benefit from you being there," agrees Jill Ross of the Centre for Responsible Tourism, a non-profit organization that works to change the attitudes and practices of North-American travellers to Third World countries.GO EXPLORING Doing some reading could also inspire tourists to explore beyond the big resort areas.White notes.“If you take a taxi or bus 15 miles (25 kilometres) north of Puerto Vallarta.there are little towns with little, locally owned hotels that are delightful, but they're not promoted at all.And once at a destination, think about how you behave.Item No.I in the code of ethics for travellers is to travel “in a spirit of humility." Other suggestions: Talk with local people.Ask about working and living conditions, the political system, the place of women.Learn about and respect the local customs.Buy locally made handicrafts.Frequent locally owned hotels and restaurants.And.as the code of ethics notes, if what you're looking for is a home away from home — why travel? The Centre for Responsible Tourism can provide a variety of publications about responsible travel. For a list, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the centre at 2 Kensington Road.San Anselmo.CA 94960-2905, U.S.A.or telephone (415) 258-6594.Travel Alternatives, published four times a year, focuses on the practical side of responsible travel and costs $18 US annually.Contact Travel Alternatives.1117 Del Mar Ave., Santa Barbara.CA 93109, U.S.A., phone (805) 962-7157. The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—NOVEMBER I K.1991—5 COVER STORY Work brings photographer back to life / \/u ntl all niuht dew lop/tinH photos, " says fashion pho toi’rapher keiko Takeuchi.‘7 forget about eating, everything." By Sunil Mahtani SHERBROOKE — Fashion photographer Keiko Takeuchi walks with a metal plate in her left leg.a grim reminder of a devastating car crash that oc cured only two years ago.It could've been worse and.sometimes, she wishes it was.Her parents and sister were liv ing in Vancouver at the time.Takeuchi, who was then based in Montreal, boarded a plane to visit them and had her car sent over. After the visit, the women decided to drive Ta kcuchi back to Montreal, making a trip out of it."My mother was very happy to take a vacation with her daughters." Takeuchi remembers."We visited places, stayed in hotels. Then, my mother say.Keiko.you've been driving all day.you stay in the hack.' "So.we changed places. We were sleeping. Then my sister was falling asleep at the wheel and we make accident." Her mother's neck was broken and she died instantly and her sister suffered broken bones and was blinded in the left eye.Kciko's leg was broken in three places and she thought she might never walk again. She says the next year was the bleakest period of her life as she underwent three operations and a slow rehabilitation process.But.even worse than her physical ailments was the grief and guilt she felt over the death of her mother."She exchanged my life for hers." says Takeuchi. If I not change places, my mother not die.1 die."My mother was very good friends with me.Sometimes.I 'm so down.1 cry so much." Her state of mind was worsened by the fact that for a year and a half, she couldn't work."I was so sad.so depressed." she recalls.T wanted to get out.1 was like a dead person All the time I was thinking about going back to work.I couldn't laugh before.I couldn't smile." Then, the day Keiko could return to work finally arrived."I was shooting a model in a studio in Montreal with my leg." she says as she points to it."One is big swollen.But.I thought only of the camera. It was so exciting.I come back to life.I was so happy.” What was work before became theraphy as Takeuchi made her mental self well again. Then, things began picking up.MAGAZINE WORK Takeuchi made a trip to Japan and visited the magazine she'd been working for as a Mont real-based photographer before the accident.T was worried.A year and a half of not working.1 thought I lost my job." she says.But.they still like me.They made me a contract for another five years." Takeuchi's job for the Japanese magazine Hi-Fashion is to photograph and write about fashion shows around the world.T go to fashion shows and choose what Japanese people would like." says the former model."Oriental people are more classical, more conservative. It s a big responsibility to introduce the latest styles of clothes to them." Takeuchi has been working professionally in photography for the past six years. She says she doesn't miss modelling."I'm Japanese and I'm tall, so people ask me to model." she says.•'But.I don't miss that. It's because I'm Oriental that I was working, but Fm not crazy about modelling." She describes herself as a very curious person who loves being behind the camera."My boyfriend says my eyes are not straight." she laughs."Fm always looking around. He says. Are you looking at another man?' We had some discussions about that at the beginning. Now: he understands." CROCODILE DUNDEE Takeuchi says her boyfriend is a Crocodile Dundee-type of guy she met at a television station in Montreal. She was there discussing karate ishe has a black belt) with someone and he was there to speak about soccer. They fell in love and.since he teaches in the physical education department at a local university.she moved to Sherbrooke so they could be together. It’s a far cry from Montreal and an even farther cry from Tokyo, but Takeuchi says she loves it here.“Sherbrooke is soquiet.life is so easy." she says.“I like Sherbrooke people, they're so friendly. In Montreal, they're a bit cold." “This wasn’t the biggest move in Takeuchi's life. She made a much greater one when she decided to move to Montreal from her birthplace.Tokyo.17 years ago.She graduated from university in Japan and had already-visited Canada on several ocrassions before deciding to live here.LESS CROWDED "It's beautiful and not so many people as in Japan." she says."Life is to enjoy here.Ja pan is like New York, always business and always on the move. Here, it s a quieter life.Japan is like a jungle, and my job is always to go in the jungle, in big cities." Though her family hated to see her go.they eventually moved to Vancouver themselves. Her sister and brother-in-law own a Japanese restaurant there. Her father, a retired executive.travels a great deal, especially since the accident that took his wife away.Aside from modelling.Takeuchi was also involved in a variety of entrepreneurial projects while living in Montreal, including exporting Canadian-made fur coats and apple cider to Japan. She also travelled a great deal to such exotic places as Brazil.Mexico and Australia. When she discovered photography, she found her true love."Sometimes I spend all night developping photos." she says with eyes as bright as a Christmas tree."I forget about eating.everything." 1080 PHOTOS A SHOT Takeuchi attends seasonal fashion shows four times a year and says she could take up to 1080 photos at any given show. She says the only thing she doesn't like about being a photographer is when she has to work with models that don't know what they're doing."Sometimes, models are stupid.they're not quick." she states."Sometimes.I don't have patience. That time.I have a temper."Forget it.you're fired!" Takeuchi says the mark of a good model is to know how to communicate."It's the same as acting." she explains."It's very important to communicate in photography.Professional models, they understand what mood, what face they should have." Future plans for Takeuchi might include opening her own studio.But.not in Sherbrooke. In two years, she plans to move to France to be closer to the fashion action. In the meantime, she has a mission.T want to introduce Canada.Canadian collections to Japan." she says."The Canadian look is nothing special, really.But.now it's getting better, it's changing.(Canadian designer) Jean-Claude Poitras is very good.Simon Chang is fantastic too." Takeuchi says the accident taught her a few things."Before.I was working so much 1 don't think about myself." she says.T don't have time.I'm too busy.Since the accident.I had so much time to think about myself.I asked questions.Who am I?"' She says she found out who her good friends are when she was sick, is more patient and takes better care of herself now.Though her leg is almost fully recovered (she still walks with a slight limp), the emotional scars whe will always carry with her.Takeuchi's advice to people is to believe in themselves. She does and says that is what got her through the rough times.“Fm very lucky. My life has come back." «—The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—NOVEMBER l-X.1991 MOVIES _____________________ Camus novel being filmed in Argentina By Ed McCullough BUENOS AIRES (APi — In insti.the film The Of ficial Story won an Oscar, hut The Plague may be the film that puts Argentina on the movie-making map.Oscar winners, including William Hurt and Robert Duvall.are bringing Albert Camus's novel to the screen.Luis Puenzo.who directed The Official Story, co-wrote the script and is behind the camera.Van-gelis.who wrote the score for Chariots of Fire, is composing the music.'This is giving us the chance to prove we can do first-class films." co-producer Oscar Kramer said during a break in shooting at a plaza in the rundown Buenos Aires neighborhood of San Telmo."This movie for us could be the entrance to big cinema.' he said. It's an enormous challenge." The comparison with The Official Story — which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film — is illuminating.THEN AND NOW For Official Story.Puenzo spent the proceeds from years of directing TV commercials to tell a tale about the 197(i-8:i military regime's heart-rending effect on one family and the nation."(ID was shot at Puenzo's house with a few friends and cost about $400,000.When he ran out of money, he called me and a few more friends and we gave him some more." Kramer said."That's the way Argentines used to make movies." No longer.Even a cheap movie can cost $1 million in Argentina, and it's almost impossible to get that back.Film-ma.kers in the country dubbed "Hollywood South" in the 1950s tend to get foreign backing for co-productions or find another line of work.Only about 15 will be made this year.Filming in the country by American and European directors is not unheard of.just infrequent .Most come to take advantage of the spectacular scenery.MOST ARGENTINES The Plague is different in that, aside from the stars who include Raul Julia and French actors Jean-Marc Barr and Sandrine Bonnaire.most everyone else — the film crew, the rest of the cast, the costume and set designers, Puenzo.Kramer — is Argentine. The $ 14-mi 11 ion budget makes it one of the most expensive movies ever filmed in the country. It is being shot in faded neighborhoods of cobblestone streets and drooping tenements in Buenos Aires, the national capital.U.S.producer John Pepper said he chose Puenzo.who two years ago directed Old Gringo starring Gregory Peck and Jane Fonda, because "he is a visionary director who is capable of taking a regional theme and bringing out its universal significance." Dion performed in Toronto, Calgary.Winnipeg and Edmonton as part of her Unison tour, which was an exhausting Dion has come a long way Céline Dion.7 lime to stop thinking about what happened to me and enjoy what I'm doing.' jtjm M blitz and she avoided doing many interviews during the tour. She is also known to sleep a lot while on tour, as much as 12 hours after a performance, and she takes 1-hour steam baths to relax. The 5 -7" singer has to rest not only her voice and body.but her mind. One particular issue she had to grapple with was whether or not to sing in French when performing in English Canada."I was afraid, because ithe show was) exactly the same.I was singing in French too." explains Dion."iButi you know, when we have in our mind.Well.I don't know, am I going to sing in French even for an English audience?" It's like if you ask this question in your mind, people are going to feel it If you don't have a problem, if you don't even think about, oh.French.English, for me it's the same, people are not going to feel it." QUALMS She admitted to having some qualms about whether people would dislike the show because they couldn't understand the French songs, but.she says happily.“Not at all.they enjoyed it.we had fun together.” If the French-English question wasn't a problem in Ontario.Alberta and other parts of the country, then it was an absolute breeze across Quebec, where people really don't seem to care whether their favorite performer sings in French or English.“1 think they like music and we speak the language of the music together." Dion said."I love singing in English.I love singing in French. One day 1 would love to experience singing another kind of language too.I'm very interested in languages. And I'm a singer and 1 want to sing in as many languages as possible.I just speak the language of the music.I enjoy singing so much, it's my life." In fact.Dion has already recorded one album in German.and says any language could be next."I know Japanese a little bit.so it's going to be maybe.1 really don't know', maybe someone's going to come and ask me to sing in Italian or Spanish, probably 1 11 take the opportunity.it's a great experience." she said.“ For me.the most important thing is the people, the public are with me and w'e’re enjoying ourselves every night, this is the most important thing." LIFE IN THE FAST LANE Céline Dion has gotten used to being in the spotlight.Discovered at the age of 12.the 23-year-old singer is a superstar in Quebec and is quickly gaining similar status around the world. For Dion, the eighties must have seemed a glorious mishmash of exotic places, languages and hit records. In 1982.she won the gold meal at the Yamaha World Song Festival in Tokyo, as well as the Musicians’ Award as Top Perfor- mer.in 83.she was the first Canadian to receive a gold record in France. One year later, she took German language lessons.198 5:30 Q WKRP IN CINCINNATI Twenty-five years after their elopement, Arthur and Carmen plan a "simple little wedding." © VIDEO ROCK DETENTE © IN AMERICA © SI J’AVAIS SU © FT FASHION TELEVISION © VERMONT THIS WEEK (MM) DAILY RSVP (TSN) FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME Behind the Screen.Looks at the role of television in the business of sports (Ft) (1 hr.)
