Townshippers a long, long way from home FADE IN: INTERIOR: NIGHT: Crackling fire.Dolly back to dwarfish, hunchbacked Alexander Pope at his desk in nightcap and dressing gown, dipping quill and writing.POPE: VOICE OVER: For lo! the board with cups and spoons is crown’d, The berries crackle, and the mill turns around; On shining altars of Japan they raise The silver lamp; the fiery spirits blaze.DISSOLVE TO: EXT: DAWN: Explosions.Titles over.Exhausted troops of the Royal Rifles of Canada at Stanley Barracks, Hong Kong, some asleep at their posts despite machine gun fire, artillery, planes, bombs.MUSIC UP: I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas TO B.G.ANNCR: V.O.In our continuing series of Townshippers Abroad we take you back fifty years and half a world away to meet Townshippers in Hong Kong at the invitation of Mackenzie King and Winston Churchill.CUT TO: Churchill at ’40s mike; hollow acoustics; CHURCHILL: (Measured tones) Your mission is limited to the reinforcement of the British garrison at Hong Kong; and to participate to the limit of your strength in defence of the Colony, should occasion arise.CUT TO: Japanese assault on Stanley barracks, troops kicked awake, confused yelling, blind firing, frantic desperation; Who’s Who By Tadeusz Letarte ANNCTt: V.O.Nine hundred and sixty-two Royal Rifles were sent to Hong King—men from Quebec, Gaspé, New Brunswick, the Eastern Townships — forty-nine from the three tiny villages of Sawyer-ville, Cookshire and Bury. They were big men from small towns, men from farms and mills, men who could fire a gun and dig a hole long before they volunteered and some were very young indeed.Lance Corporal Goode-nough of Bury was only sixteen.CUT TO: Counter attack, artillery and machine gun fire, bombing runs.ANNCR: V.O.Ill-trained and ill-equipped, they’d been three weeks in Hong Kong when hordes of veteran Japanese troops poured down from China on the same day as Pearl Harbour.Lance Corporal Goodenough, twice wounded, nevertheless managed to recapture a Vickers machine gun overrun by the enemy and turn it against them until they withdrew.FADE IN: Churchill superimposed on battle footage.CHURCHILL: We are all watching day by day and hour by hour your stubborn defence of the fort and for- tress of Hong Kong. All our hearts are with you in your ordeal.Every day your resistence brings nearer our certain final victory! * * * CUT TO: Map of Hong Kong superimposed on war footage; Japanese regiments pouring down from the north, allies retreating south to Hong Kong Island and pushed across the island to the souther-most Stanley Peninsula with nowhere else to go.CHURCHILL: V.O.There must be.no thought of surrender.Every part of the island must be fought and the enemy resisted with the utmost stubborness. The enemy should be compelled to expend the utmost life and equipment. There must be rigorous fighting in the innder defences, and if need be, from house to house.Every day you are able to maintain your resistence you help the allied cause all over the world, and by prolonged resistence, you and your men can win the lasting honour which we are sure will be your due.ANNC’R: V.O.For seventeen days the garrison battled heroicly against overwhelming firepower and enormous odds.A quarter were killed in action.Of the Royal Rifles, almost half the officers were either killed or wounded and over a third of the riflemen as they were driven inexorably back to Stanley Barracks and Stanley Fort.At dawn on Christmas Day, 1941, they rejected yet another demand for their surrender and the Japanese opened up with artillery, mortars, machine guns and bombs. At three in the afternoon, with no hope left, they capitulated.MUSIC UP: Joy to the World.CUT TO: Exhausted soldiers stacking weapons and surrendering. The Japanese Rising Sun flies over Stanley Barracks and Stanley Fort.ANNCR: V.O.The next 44 months were spent in prison camps and at slave labor in Hong Kong and Japan. As many of the Royal Rifles died from malnutrition, mistreatment and neglect in the campus as had died in the battle.Lance Corporal Goodenough recovered from his wounds but died of despair in Japan two years later. He was awarded the Military Medals posthumously.* • • CUT TO: Prison camp life, starving inmates, brutal guards.Superimpose 1948 War Crimes Tribunal in Japan and presiding judge reading his decision.JUDGE: Until the surrending of Japan in August 1945, torture, murder, rape and other cruelties of the most inhumane and barbarous character were freely practiced by the Japanese Army and Navy.Only one conclusion is possible — the atrocities were either secretly ordered or willfully per- mitted by the Japanese government or individual members thereof and by the leaders of the armed forces.CUT TO: Troops disembarking at Vancouver, greeted by wives, families, banners, bands.ANNCR: VO.Just over 700 came home and each of those suffered physical and psychological disabilities brought about by ill-treatment.The Canadian government, however, while prompt and eager in absolving Mackenzie King’s administration of any and all responsibility for needlessly sacrificing Canadian lives, was niggardly in awarding compensation. But Winston Churchill had known it was hopeless from the very beginning.MUSIC: Land of Hope and Glory to B.G.CUT TO: CHURCHILL IN PARLIAMENT: CHURCHILL: If Japan goes to war with us there is not the slightest chance of holding Hong Kong or relieving it.It is most unwise to increase the loss we shall suffer there.Instead of increasing the garrison, it ought to be reduced to a symbolical scale.CUT TO: A handful of veterans at a graveside, guns fired in salute.ANNC’R: V.O.Today there are just over two hundred left among us.MUSIC UP AND OUT: FADE TO BLACK.Jodie Foster wins a Golden Apple Award BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.(AP) — Actress-director Jodie Foster has enhanced Hollywood’s image this year more than any other female star, the Hollywood Woman’s Press Club said in presenting her with a Golden Apple Award. The award for male stars was shared by actors Kevin Costner and Robin Williams. The winners were presented the crystal disks with an etched apple Sunday at the 51st-annual award luncheon.Foster starred this year in the hit thriller The Silence of the Lambs and made her directing debut with Little Man Tate, in which she plays the mother of a gifted child. The awards are given to the male and female stars who are “the most colorful and newsworthy personalities,” and who in the last year have ‘‘most enhanced Hollywood’s image and glamour,” said Sandy Pollock, a publicist for the awards. There was a tie for the Sour Apple Award shared by Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger as a couple and singer Sinead O’Connor. The Sour Apple award is given to the individual who ‘‘most believes his or her own publicity,” Pollock said.* * * NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Grammy Award-winning musician and producer Quincy Jones, receiving an honorary doctorate, thanked the people of Louisiana for turning back gubernatorial candidate and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.People Shorts “The good news coming from here in Louisiana lately is that a racist politician was soundly defeated,” Jones said Monday.“I’m real proud of you and I thank you for that.” Accepting the honorary degree in music from Loyola University, Jones urged that people “struggle against unreason, the closed mind and the closed society.” Duke, who announced last week that he will challenge President Bush in several Republican Party primaries, lost to Democrat Edwin Edwards in a runoff election Nov.16.* * * HONG KONG (CP) — A Canadian couple has won the Hong Kong ballroom and latin dance championship, beating pairs from 12 other countries.Alain Doucet and Anik Odette Julicoeur, who hail from Montreal but now live and train in London, took the title.Entrants were judged on their performance in a selection of ballroom and Latin American dances. The judges praised Doucet and Julicoeur for their presence on the floor, technical skill, control and musical rhythm.Jodie Foster The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—DECEMBER 13-20.1991—3 TALK OF THE TOWNSHIPS Christmas concert By Sylvain Bouchard features chamber ensemble Le Quatuor Vocal, composed of Sylvain Landry, Sylvie Verret, Mario Tremblay and Nathalie Caron, performs Saturday at Église St.Jean-Baptiste.SHERBROOKE — Give a different flavor to your Christmas by initiating your friends to chamber music, opera ensembles and inspirational music.Le Quatuor Vocal de Québec will perform with L'Orchestre de chambre de l’Estrie and Le Coeur Symphonique de Sherbrooke Saturday night at Sher-brooke’s St.Jean-Baptiste Church.Sherbrooker Nathalie Caron (soprano), Sylvie Verret (mezzo-soprano), Sylvain Landry (tenor), and Mario Tremblay (baritone) compose Le Quatuor Vocal de Québec. The four are graduates of Quebec City’s Université Laval.Since its foundation in March 1990, the foursome has performed on many occasions. The highlight of their brief career was a performance at the Basilica in Quebec City. That show was put together to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Quebec women acquiring the right to vote.Part One of Saturday’s show will feature the Canadian premiere of a cantata by American composer René Clausen entitled “A New Creation”.This work, based largely on texts from the New Testament, will be sung in English.CROWD PLEASER “The Clausen work should please a lot of people,” Caron predicts.“It has a certain youth to it, and is inspired by various styles of music so there’s something for everyone.” As well as a beautiful voice, Caron also plays an instrument quite unknown to most of us.“An alto is a bit bigger than a violin and its sound has a lower pitch,” Caron said.“Altists like myself are in great demand because there aren’t that many of us.” The whole concept of chamber music is also stranger to most of us.It is Le Quatuor Vocal’s intention to provide the clarifications to its audience.“Chamber music is what stands between a soloist singer and an orchestra that operates without a singer. It’s more intimate because there are only four singers and a pianist,” says Caron, who is making a homecoming of her own.The second half of Saturday’s program will include traditional sing-along Christmas carols. The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah, the last act, has the potential to have spec- tators experience their last goose bumps of the night.Tickets for this evening of classical singing and music are $16 apiece. They are available at La Trouvaille (Carrefour de l’Estrie), Musique Cité (169 King W.), Le Gramophone (Promenades King), and Pharmacie Roy et Potvin (624 Bowen South.) The Record-TOWNSHIPS WEEK—DECEMBER 13-20, 1991—5 COVER STORY Humor is main ingredient in Barbeau’s work By Maryse Cardin SHERBROOKE — Plato once said that we become what we contemplate. Our past, our environment, our family make us what we are today. This could not be truer than in the case of artist Jacques Barbeau. The salt-and-peper haired artist with the laughing blue eyes paints what he sees and what he knows. His life is his inspiration.“My world is what I reproduce,” says the 57-year-old who hails from Saint-Raphael, a town right outside Quebec.“My art évoqués the memories of my childhood. It reflects the Quebec of yesteryear with all of its qualities and its faults.” Barbeau began his artistic carreer at an early age.At 17 he entered VÉcole des Beaux-Arts in Quebec City where he studied sculpture and painting.“When I entered the school, no one thought that I could survive as an artist.Backthen.only main-stream professions were accepted.Bull was determined and there was no way that anyone would make me change my mind.” DETERMINATION This determination to do what he felt was right has been expressed throughout Bar-beau’s career. He says he doesn't care about what critics say about his art.“From the moment when I developed my own personal style in which to express myself, there was nothing a critic could say that would make me change the way I feel about my art.” Barbeau says he has kept away from the different artistic movements that have come into fashion through the years.“I’ve always followed my own route, outside of the mainstream. For me art is not a fashion, it’s a way of recollecting my memories and expressing the way 1 feel” “An artist must be honest with his u'ork. There is no pretention in what I do.I respect the profession and strive to achieve a flawless technique.” Jeanine Blais, owner of a North Hatley gallery which has had Barbeau’s work in its permanent collection for six years, describes Barbeau’s as a naif painter.“Naif art occurs when an artist removes himself from the classical techniques he has learned,” she said.“The work SSSBÊÊÈÊÊÊË Barbeau's work reflects the whimsical world he lives in.is colorful and the characters tell stories.” HUMOROUS QUALITY Blais says Barbeau distin-guises himself from other naif artists by the lighthearted quality of his paintings.“There’s a lot of humour in all the characters he paints. This gives his work a straight forward honesty.” Huntched over his kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee, the jean clad artist stresses the importance of having a sense of humor.“Quebecers have always had a wonderful sense of humor despite all the hardships they had to overcome. The early settlers never would have survi- ved if they were not able to laugh at the terrible conditions they had to live in.” Barbeau smiles as he remembers his first solo exhibition at the Palais Montcalm in Quebec.“I was so excited to see how the public would react to my work.Since I love to paint.I like people to have fun looking at my paintings.” STAYS YOUNG Barbeau came to Sherbrooke in 1971 and has been teaching art at Collège de Sherbrooke ever since. He says working with students has kept him young and energized. He says it is very difficult for young Quebec artists to make it I and advises his students to join artistic associations.“It is important to have group support and encourge-ment at the beginning,” says the former president of the Regroupement des Artistes des Cantons de l'Est.Having once been an active member of the Quebec artistic community.Barbeau says it was once important for him to confront his work to that of his peers. Now the only opinions he takes into consideration are those of his close friends and family. His studio is his home and he is happiest painting when surrounded by his family.“I’ve never felt the need to RKCORD/GRANT SIMEON isolate myself to create.I like to paint at home. When my three daughters were young they were always welcomed to come into my studio to paint and draw.” Barbeau seems content when reminicing about his artistic career the many exhibitions he has made in cities from Toronto to Paris. However nothing makes his eyes shine as when he speaks of his two grandchildren, Emilie and Cedric who are coming to visit for Christmas.“You know,” Barbeau says with a smile, “the drawings they make for me are all over the walls of my studio.” «—The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—DKCEMBKR 1:{-2U.I'WI BITS & PIECES______________________________________ Floridians are a great deal like us A few weeks ago was April - actually six months ago?Any- way, as I wrote my last column in the spring, a friend and 1 were about to take off for Florida. My friend had won a trip for two to Orlando and had invited me to go along.Aware of the many mix-ups and pit-falls that jinxed my past journeys, she packed a rabbit's foot, crossed her fingers and away w'e went.Something worked. All planes were on time. The travel agent had our tickets and motel reservations in order, our luggage didn't end up in Australia, the flight was smooth and the motel wms pleasant.Could this good beginning be sustained for two weeks we wondered? But on our first night in Orlando when the Holiday Inn across the street was struck by lightning and burned we began to fear that the devil was looking for us after all, and had his wires crossed. You see.it was a Holiday Inn we were supposed to stay in on our last night in Florida, not our first.Later w’e learned that the Whatever By Myrtle Gallup Orlando-Tampa area is known as the thunder and lightning capital of the state, or the country. So lor two women who crawl under a bed at home when the first rumble ot thunder is heard the other side of Montreal, this bit of news was a little unnerving.FLATTERING In Florida they were delighted to see us and by noon on day two at least twenty-seven people had told us to "have a nice day you-all".It was most flattering.Living in a country where hostile service and sales people, for the most part, give the impression that we should shuffle our feet and apologize for entering their place of business, this Florida politeness caught us off guard. You know what I mean. Here a bus driver grabs your ticket and leaves you wishing you had taken the train. At VIA the girl at the wicket filing her nails, gets her message across with a look of disdain as we interrupt her duties.Airports pride themselves on their aloofness. In contrast, our motel bus driver Dave, invites everyone on the bus to his house on Sunday for a B.B.Q.and tells us to have a nice day.Another driver Chuck, drops us at the mall, says he will pick us up at four o’clock, that he takes a size nine shoe and a "have a nice day you-all’’.And of course Sally our waitress had been waiting all winter just to serve us.I’ll admit that this cordiality begins to pale after a few days, but you have to give them credit, they know their jobs depend on the customer and they play it to the limit.FRIGHTENING We did all the touristy things. At Universal Studios Alfred Hitchcock frightened us out of our wits.We saw how an episode of Murder She Wrote is put together and we ate at Mel’s Diner.Epcot Centre was all it claimed to be.Because everything in the area is aimed at freeing the visitor of his money, the tourist is often unaware that behind the billboards and razzle-dazzle there are ordinary people who earn their living teaching school, printing newspapers and larming. So for me at least, the most enlightening part of our trip was an outing we en joyed during a side trip we took to visit my sister and her family in Plant City. After church service on Sunday morning the congregation drove out to the farm home of a church member for a pot luck lunch and business meeting. Is Florida all palm trees? No.We drove off the interstate past ordinary farms, through a lovely wooded area to the hills. No, not hills as we Townshippers know hills, but it certainly wasn’t flat.Plant City is the strawberry centre of the South, and here every February the state holds its annual strawberry festival and crowns a queen.Portage La Prairie, Manitoba is twinned with Plant City and is our strawberry capital. But in April the strawberry plants were ploughed under and acres of young watermelon plants were growing in endless perfect rows — a beautiful sight! Our pot luck lunch was everything from black-eyed peas to ham and grits, southern fried chicken and okra to a coconut trifle to die for.All foods on the groaning table were different than what might be served at a similar function at home.We felt privileged to meet these people behind the scenes away from the tourist traps.Ordinary people earning their living, concerned with prices and weather and families just as we are.It was great fun. Thanks Florida, thanks Therese.Great trip, great summer.Special Discount I HAVE RETURNED! .a (Formerly of Place André Viger) TRAINS ARE BACK three attempts to make it all the way through the album, and even then I had to fast forward a few songs to relieve the monotony. This isn’t to say it's an awful album.I'm sure all those angst-ridden teenagers who sit in their bedrooms wondering about life will enjoy Bono's self-serving So Cruel and soulful voice emulation in The Fly, and the guys with the long flowing hair who drive loud motorcycles will like the repetitive edge of Zoo Station. But those of us who remember and appreciate previous albums by this band might be a little disappointed.NASHVILLE, Tenn.(AP) — The Judds, a promising at first, but ends in a kind of boring fizzle. The Edge is absolutely doing his job.his guitar sounding energetically cool at almost every turn, and Larry Mullen is holding the band tight on the percussion end of things. But as soon as Bono opens his mouth his ego seems to come spilling out in the form of whiney.half-hearted lyrics. But of course it’s hard not to expect something like that from a band who’s last release included a feature-length film based almost entirely on the lead singer’s chest.Rattle and Hum, for the uninitiated. This appears to be the kind of album that requires many listenings to be appreciated, but good luck making it that far.— Deborah Nobes 118-city, yearlong farewell tour.“This is a party.a blowout bash,” Naomi Judd said shortly after the concert more heavily on his deep, raspy voice (which may not appeal to everyone) than on catchy beats.for those of us who wish (he Little Drummer Boy would impale himself on his drum sticks.White City and Misty Morning.Albert Bridge, from 1989’s Peace and Love, make up for the interesting but un-Poguish Lorelei and Blue Hea ven from the same album.Aside from The Sunny Side of the Street, a catchy pop tune, the selections from 1990 release Hell's Gate have the Pogues straying ever further from their roots. The cover of the Stones' Hon-ky Tonk Woman is good but unremarkable, and MacGowan composition Yeah.Yeah.Yeah, Yeah.Yeah should probably never have been recorded.Essential wil give you a taste of the Pogues, but if you want a full course, get Rum.Sodomy and the Lash instead.— Steve Meurice There are some good moments on the album, but some of them come only because Loc invited guest singers on the tracks.Funky Westside (and Funky Westside Reprise) and Freaky Beha vior feature guest vocals by Kenyatta, who has a more tolerable voice than Loc.All Through the Night shines with the guest vocals of El Dearge. One track that stands on its own is Fatal Attraction.Loc captures the humor of the first album by using short cuts from the movie of the same name.“I’m not going to be ignored," Glen Close threatens in the background of the song. There aren’t many good points on Tone-Loc’s new album Cool Hand Loc.If you want to listen to him.put his first album on.— Larry Roman Judds play farewell concert 3S1ONVH1003 AND LÔC 8—The Record-TOWNSHIPS WEEK-DECEMBER n-20, 1991 WHAT’S ON WHAT’S EX- H»—The Record—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—DECEMBER 13-20, 1991 TV WEEK Savage stars in new holiday drama By Jerry Buck LOS ANGELES ( AP) — Fred Savage began celebrating Christmas in July with the help of 400 tonnes of ice, potato flakes, wind machines and white blankets spread over the grass. The young performer’s early start on the holiday culminates Dec.15 on CTV/CBS as he plays a teenaged boy who befriends a homeless man, played by London.Ont.-born Hume Cronyn.in Christmas on Division Street.“I play Trevor Atwood, who’s just moved to Philadelphia and has no friends,” said Savage, who stars in the ABC comedy series The Wonder Years.“He’s a new kid, and this man becomes his best friend. He’s really the only one who would spend time with him.“They meet in a library when my character’s supposed to be doing a research paper on Benjamin Franklin. He hears this voice telling him what books to choose. He’s embarrassed at In the Sick of Time features Lloyd Bridges as a retiring St.Nick and Michael Tucker as a newspaper columnmist. The holiday movie airs Monday.Dec.16.this first meeting with a homeless man.But it inspires his campaign to help the homeless.Savage described working with the verteran Cronyn as a terrific experience.“He’s one of the finest American actors around today. It was a real learning experience. He has a terrific sense of humor.” His only disappointment was that Cronyn's wife, Oscar-winning actress Jessica Tandy, was too busy working elsewhere to visit the set.INSPIRES MOVIE The movie was inspired by the deeds of Trevor Ferrell, who eight years ago,at the age of 11, started a campaign to help the homeless in Philadelphia.Barry Morrow, who won an Oscar as co-writer of Rain Main, wrote the screenplay after learning of Ferrell’s work in Philadelphia.Morrow said he created the story to capture what he saw as the true message of Christmas: that every person deserves to be treated with dignity, humanity and respect. The story is not Trevor Ferrell’s, although Morrow named the main character Trevor as a tribute. The movie was filmed in midsummer in Vancouver during a break in Savage’s work on The Wonder Years.A winter look was achieved with 400 tonnes of ice used for ground cover and falling snow.In one scene at a cemetery, 100 tons of ice were crushed and blown by wind machines over white covers spread on the grass.Potato flakes were also used to depict falling snow, and a biodegradable white foam Fred Savage and Hume Cronyn was sprayed on trees.FLEW IN VANCOUVER Savage, who began The Wonder Years in January 1988, is now a high school sophomore. His character, Kevin Arnold, is also a sophomore. He began acting professionally in commercials in Chicago when he was six and his movie debut came in The Boy Who Could Fly, also filmed in Vancouver. His series was Mor-ningstar-Eveningstar and since then he’s appeared in three other television movies. His family divides its time between Los Angeles and Chicago, where his father is in industrial real estate.“I spend most of my time on the set, but when I’m not working 1 go to a private school,” he said.“I want to go to college. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do.Maybe I’ll do like Jodie Foster and take four years off.Or maybe I’ll do some work.” Like Foster, he u'ould also like to follow' Foster’s move into directing.“I’m interested in lenses and lighting and everything connected with filming,’' he said.“I’m always looking into the camera and asking questions.” Savage says he doesn't know how long The Wonder Years will stay on the air, but believes there are enough story possibilities to take Kevin into college.“Now that Kevin’s in high school it’s opened many new doors for new stories,” he said.“In junior high school it was just the kids in the neighborhood.(Now) He has new friends, a new girlfriend, is going to school with his brother Wayne and has a job in a hardware store.” f SATURDAY MORNING 5:00 (mF) ROCK EN BULLE (nw) CAPITAL REPORT
