season. The Turkey should be gone by now as well as the visitors. With the new year well upon us, we should be right back to our normal routines. The only thing left to remind us of Christmas 1986 are the Christmas stamps that the post office insists on selling until the month of April. It’s the one series of stamps that seems to get very tiresome.Although these stamps are unwanted, let’s have a second look at them.It won’t be long now that many clubs and associations will start their exhibition season. What will you exhibit if you are thinking of the competition? Why not Christmas stamps?Canada has, over the years issued some very meaningful Christmas stamps. These along with a selection of stamps from Great Britain and Australia, will make an absolutely beautiful display. From Great Britain one could Stamp corner By Peter McCarthy use the issue of 1969 depicting an angel, three shepherds and three kings. The 1973 issue of six stamps tells the story of Good King Wen-ceslaus.The 1971 issue is designs from stained glass windows of Canterbury Cathedral. The 1977 issue tells the story of the 12 days of Christmas on six stamps.Australia has issued some very interesting Christmas stamps. The 1969 issue depicts the Tree of Life in the 25tf denomination. It’s unusual yet very appropriate.Christmas of 1973 illustrates the Bap- national stamp exhibition netanya Nativity play. Many other countries issue Christmas stamps. They range from stained glass windows from local churches to the featuring of Christmas traditions of that particular country. There is absolutely no lack of material in making a very nice display. The write-up is quite easy. You have the greatest reference book in the world at your finger tips: The Bible. There is one issue that I would highly recommend, and that is the Israel Netanya 86 National Stamp Exhibition souvenir sheet depicting a map of the Holy Land by Gerard de Jode in 1578.Although this is not a Christmas stamp, I don’t know of anything more appropriate to start a display with. There, now you know what to do with your Christmas stamps. It’s not necessary that you do this for public exhibition. You can collect Christmas stamps for your own personal satisfaction. On the philatelic side of the Christmas gifts, I was pleasantly surprised in receiving a multi purpose magnifier lamp.It clips onto the desk or to a table, it’s very mobile, stretching out to about three feet.It has a three diopter lens and takes up to a 60 watt bulb. The beauty of it is that it leaves you with both hands free to work your stamps.A very much appreciated gift. With the holidays over, the clubs get back into full swing again. If you are interested in joining a club in the area, here are a couple of names: • Phila-Sherbrooke meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 1215 Kitchener, in Sherbrooke.Things generally get under way around 7 p.m.Just drop in.You’ll be made to feel right at home.• Magog Coin and Stamp Club meets the first Sunday of the month I believe. For information, contact Bertrand Dubreuil at (819) 843-6434.I haven’t heard from the Knowl-ton Club for some time now so, I really don’t know if they are still in existance. If anyone wishes to let me know of the status quo of this club, I’ll be pleased to pass it on.Your letters are always welcome and, may be sent to P.O.Box 688, Richmond, Que., JOB 2H0 Develop a vocabulary that works for you One of the most lingering — and often justified — visions of a wine taster, is one featuring an austere looking Englishmen, nose in glass, commenting on the wine in question with pithy phrases like, “A brawny young wine, yet neither aggressive nor impudent, redolent of black currents and summer savory.’’ Now to most of us, brawn is associated more likely with the denizens of the gridiron, while the thought of black currents and savory in any combination borders on the frightening.Nevertheless, wine enthusiasts, both the expert and amateur, continue to use the English language in the most extraordinary way in an unending attempt to describe what they are drinking.Don’t get me wrong. To become in the least way discerning where wine is concerned you have to be able not only to describe what you are tasting, smelling and seeing but you have to be able to remember the overall effect often months later. The important thing then is to develop for yourself a wine vocabulary. This need not be elaborate nor need it sound like a page out of the tasting notes of André Simon. What it should include are words that accurately describe a given wine and words that strike a responsive chord in your own mind so that when you find a wine “oaky” in April and come across the same scene in October, it will still be “oaky”.To give you a head start, these are some of the phrases generally used and understood in the wine world.I’ll avoid the flowery adjectives since they will likely not mean the same to me as to you.Acidic: All wines need a natural acidity for freshness; too much, however, and the wine becomes tart and sour.Aftertaste: Pretty self-explanatory.The longer it lasts in the mouth when it is pleasant, the better the wine. Also called “finish” or “length”.Bouquet: Not just the smell of the grape but hopefully a developed aroma as the wine ages.Brilliant: Refers to the clarity of the wine.No cloud. No sediment.Tannic: The tannins of a wine can give it a rough taste when young.Coming from the skins and stems it’s no wonder. This should dissipate with age.Thin: An undesireable characteristic indicating a wine that is watery lacking glycerine, alcohol and taste.Full bodied: The opposite to thin.Oxidized: Too much exposure to air will oxidize a wine turning it brown eventually and giving it a stable, old smell.Raisiny: Since raisins come from aged, dry grapes, this particular taste is sometimes found in late harvested wines such as certain Ports and Sherries where it is desireable, and in some Bordeaux wines where it is not.Spicy: Some wines do in fact smell and taste of pepper, cinnamon etc. When they do, they are often termed spicy.Be careful with this one.Chewy : When a wine is dense with a viscous texture, usually a result of excessive gylcerine, it is called chewy. That should be enough to get you started. But again the key is to develop your own vocabulary. One that works for you.Cheers! aims to keep up momentum By Laurel Sherrer LENNOXVILLE — Bisbap's University drama professor Gregory Tuck is reading plays at a more rapid pace and watching plays even more often than usual these days. It’s his first step in taking over the role of artistic director at the Piggery Theatre in North Hatley.Appointed to the job in early December following the resignation of Perry Schneiderman, Tuck is confident that by mid-February he will have a fairly solid idea of the three productions to be presented at the theatre this summer.“Pm sort of exhausting the library here and catching up on a lot of reading,” he says, “tracking down things that are new, that I wouldn’t ordinarily have run into.” As well as teaching at Bishop’s for the past four years, Tuck has worked throughout Canada at a variety of theatres including Theatre Calgary, Wildhorse Theatre, Theatre Arts Productions, the Banff Centre, and the Warehouse Theatre of the Manitoba Theatre Centre. He has also taught acting and directing at the Banff Centre and the National Theatre School.KEEP MOMENTUM After a record season at the Piggery under Schneiderman’s direction, with attendance reaching 14,000, Tuck has some big shoes to fill. But he feels he can keep the momentum going.“I’m not looking to change something that’s in the process of growth and was as successful as it was last summer,” he says.In choosing the three plays he will try to maintain the balance and variety of last’s year’s season, and simply keep the audience in mind at all times.“For me the art of choosing a season here is not to have a bril- liant new idea,” he says.“I ask myself what would I like to see, and what would they like to see.“Wherever I’ve directed I’ve never seen any point in gratuitously doing plays without any consideration for your audience.” Knowing the Piggery audience is an asset, says Tuck.He feels acting in one of last summer’s productions, The Melville Boys helped in this area.“Having worked on stage as an actor is a real advantage because I can put myself in the place of the actors and help them know the stage and the audience,” he says.NOT TOO HEAVY Since it’s a summer theatre, Tuck will choose accordingly, he says. For most people, it’s holiday time and they don’t want to see anything too heavy. When Schneiderman resigned from his job at the Piggery, he predicted the 1987 season would see smaller scale productions at the Piggery if the theatre didn’t receive more government support.Tuck agrees there won’t be as lavish productions, but he doesn’t think it will be a particularly lean year either.“I would imagine we won’t look at a play as large as Noises Of/this year,” he says (a play with nine characters and a two-storey set that revolved).“I probably won’t find something that large. On the other hand, we’re not looking at a season of one-character or two-character plays.” In his search for plays, Tuck is considering a wide range of drama. He’s not limiting his search to Canadian plays either, although there’s plenty of those to choose from.“There’s no shortage of commercially viable Canadian scripts,” he says, “and because they’re about us in some way they’re as appea- Greg Tuck in a scene from The Melville Boys, presented at the Piggery Theatre last summer. Now he’s taking his baggage backstage as he assumes the responsibilities of artistic director.ling as any others.” As he reads, of course, he keeps in mind the size and resources of the theatre.COMMITTED TO THEATRE The Piggery has meant a lot to Tuck in the years he has been in the Townships. When he first moved to North Hatley he knew no one until he went to the Piggery and ran into old theatre friends there. And now he feels he can count on those, who, like him, are committed to the theatre.“The audience, as I understand it.are people who care very much about the theatre,” he says."The board and the audience members take a very proprietary interest in it.That’s exciting to me.That’s very healthy as far as I’m concerned.” Until the end of May, Tuck will continue to be busy teaching and directing plays at Bishop's, while choosing plays, designers and so on for the Piggery. The end of the school year should mesh perfectly with the beginning of the Piggery’s busiest season. It may be a slightly heavier load than usual — handling the Piggery job as well as teaching — but Tuck feels he is fortunate to have both opportunities."I’m delighted,” he says."Although I enjoy and am committed to teaching, because 1 work in the theatre the bottom line of it is the profession. One can’t shake the urge to get one’s feet back in the pond.“What 1 do best is put on plays, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to do so.” Guess who’s playing doctor?VIN-t 1.1 NIK AI « A comedy of epidemic proportions.CRITICAL s'tfciex/ By RICHARD LONEY V / .i, \ j One Knee Equals Two Feet by John Madden (RANDOM HOUSE): $24.75, 225 pp.As Super Bowl fans await the great American Event and even as CBS’s John Madden is poised to reveal his “All-Madden Team” to the football world, those who admire the ex-Raiders mentor may find some additional fun in his wacky book about the players, coaches and all-time greats of the National Football League. The title derives from a speculation that Madden made about a play in the end zone when a ball-catcher was found to have been ve ry close to the out of bounds lines, and Madden and his fellow commentator were locked into a speculative quarrel about whether the man was in bounds or whether the play was washed out.Madden and Summerall, on viewing a replay saw that the ball-catcher’s right knee hit in bounds, but not his feet.Madden held that “he has to have both feet in bounds and he has to have possession”.A call from one of the officials was transmitted to Madden, and said that for all intents and purposes, “one knee equals two feet”, and the touchdown counted; hence the book’s title.Whether Madden is cribbing from some of his Sunday on-camera kibitzing, only ardent viewers of the N.F.L.will be able to decide, but for those of us new to his chatty, no-nonsense, informed style of delivery, there are lots of inside scoops about the football players and their teams and the industry that is supported by them. For instance, everyone knows the nickname of Chicago Bears defensive lineman William Perry — The Refrigerator, natch. But, according to Madden, one of his team-mates, Dan Hampton, an end who weighs in at a mere 267 pounds, confessed that the boys didn’t call Perry “The Fridge” at all.Their name for him?Biscuit.Says Hampton, “William is just a biscuit away from 350”, and Madden goes on to talk about the other battles that Perry has had with the Toledo scales and his fiery coach, Mike Ditka.Madden rates the best players he has seen at all of the positions, and discusses why he has chosen them with Drive Anderson John Madden ONE KNEE EQUALS TWO FEET (And Everything Else You Need to Know About Football) for this all-time “All-Madden” team, and he also discusses some of the strengths of various N.F.L.coaches that he admires, from Lombardi in the past, down to Joe Gibbs of the Redskins currently. There are also some inside anecdotes about Madden’s tenure with the Oakland Raiders and their triumph in Super Bowl XI, as well as some obviously fond recollections of the tribe of extroverts and oddballs that he seemed to be attracted to as a coach, and vice-versa.Madden’s book is the perfect pregame warm-up to Super Bowl XXI for the avid football fan—lots of roster info, scouting reports on all the big teams, a handy primer on the XX previous Super Bowls and some of the startling upsets (Na-math and the Jets in Super Bowl HI), as well as some down to earth explanations of football procedure for raw novices or football wives striving to understand the complexities of the game (Madden’s explanation of the usage of time outs and their advantage to both the offense and the defense is crystal clear and takes the mystery out of this aspect of the game that never really seems to get explained at the close of a half or the end of a game). In a prose style that approximates the way Madden delivers his observations on CBS — “Hey, when you play football every week from July to January, it can get boring, just like any other job gets boring” — Madden’s book has benefitted from Dave Anderson’s co-writing, but the essence of One Knee Equals Two Feet is pure John Madden.RECORD REVIEWS John Lennon MENLOVE AVENUE (CAPITOL-EMI) Purported to be a “roots” album, with 251 Menlove Avenue being the address in Liverpool where John grew up with his Auntie Mimi and Uncle George, this Yoko Ono assembled album is really just a collection of the out-takes for the ROCK ’N’ ROLL album which Lennon cut in 1975.On one side, that is, because on the flip side we are given early versions of songs that were included on 1974’s WALLS AND BRIDGES sessions. On the tracks Jim Keltner is the drummer, with John handling guitars and piano, Jesse Ed Davis on more guitars, and Klaus Voorman (designer of RUBBER SOUL’S photo montage) on bass.It will be instantly clear why John chose to leave these songs off those two albums; the cover of a classic Arthur Crudup song covered by Elvis, “My Baby Left Me”, becomes a sing-a-long song in the Mitch Miller style, with John lining out a line of a verse and a large studio gathering giving the response; Phil Specter’s “To Know Him Is To Love Him”, originally performed by a group he named The Teddy Bears, has a sex-change into “To Know Her”, while Lennon slaughters the timing on the song, absolutely destroying the haunting ballad feel of the early rock classic. For collectors of post-Beatles Trivia only.Jimmy Barnes JIMMY BARNES (GEFFEN-W.E.A.) Armed with one of those Joe Cocker/Bob Seger scratch ’n’ grit voices, Jimmy Barnes has an album that is too good to be passed over, even though it has probably missed the boat as far as large scale public recognition is concerned.Mark it down then as one of the unheralded, but solid 1986 records (like those of Stan Ridgeway or Billy Bragg which show up on few commercial charts) merely on the strength of Jimmy Barnes’s commitment to his art.He can sing impassioned acoustic guitar anthems with the likes of John Cougar Mellancamp anytime, and with a back-up bunch of players such as Billy Burnette, Waddy Wachtel, Bill Payne, and Mick Fleetwood, plus vocalizing from Vanetta Fields and Kim Carnes, Barnes’s debut is outstanding.Songs like “Working Class Man” seem to imply that Canadian Barnes (he’s represented by Bruce Allen, the impressario who handles Bryan Adams, plus the record has been mixed by Bob Clear-mountain, a West Coast fixture in the industry) has an answer to Bruce Springsteen’s stance as a hero to the American working class.Lots of vocal power, blistering guitars, and tunes that bear a haunting resemblance to material that primal rockers like Eddie Cochrane would have been at home with.Even though Jimmy Barnes didn’t click with this one, be prepared for further music from this dynamic young rocker to be sparking up the airwaves in the near future.VIDEO SCREENINGS THE QUIET EARTH (CBS-FOX) A kind of up-dating of Nevil Shute’s On The Beach, which was popular in thetifties when the prospects of atomic bomb destruction seemed likely, The Quiet Earth is the story of Zac Hobson, a scientist who had been working on*a secret project known as “Operation Flashlight”.As the film opens, Hobson awakens one morning at 6:12 a.m.to experience an odd sensation, only to find that everyone else in the world has been disintegrated, or at least has disappeared. He sets out to discover if anyone else has survived this freak accident (attributed to the reckless Americans, of course, with this story set on a southern hemisphere land-mass that could be Australia or Ne w Zealand) and as he forages about, the details of the plot unfold.Operation Flashlight has brought about a cataclysmic destruction of almost all of the humans on earth — but Hobson discovers a young woman still alive, and later an aborigine, who is male, hostile and tired of being run by the white man.Lots of the stuff of dramatic conflict, with Hobson and the aborigine vying for the girl’s favors, and the native resenting the scientific demeanor and showy intelligence of the man who has perhaps caused the entire traumatic event. The Quiet Earth, while resembling a minor Ray Bradbury story, fails to really turn into a good sci-fi film, partly because the detail about the event that has doomed these people is so sketchily filled in, and partly because the acting performances do not stand out. With a premise that receives not enough clarification, and acting that fails to captivate the viewer totally, The Quiet Earth remains a B-movie that could have been much more significant with some more careful writing and a better screenplay.(VIDEO AVAILABLE AT LE CLUB VIDEO, QUEEN STREET, LENNOXVILLE; AND AT TREIZIEME AVENUE, SHERBROOKE). TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, JANUARY 16.1987—5 Gerald Danovitch: Saxophone By Laurel Sherrer LENNOXVILLE — Announce a concert by a saxophone quartet and the jazz enthusiasts will prick up their ears.Devotees of other types of music, on the other hand, might never give it a second thought. But they should.according to Gerald Danovitch, director of the Gerald Danovitch Saxophone Quartet, appearing at Centennial Theatre Jan.24.Ever since it was founded in 1968 the quartet has been fighting misconceptions about the instrument, says Danovitch.Contrary to many people’s expectations, the group plays not only jazz, but everything from classical to ragtime to Quebec folk music.“The instrument is capable of producing all of these colors,” says Danovitch.“We’d like to think we’re helping to break the barriers down.” FINDING MUSIC The problem sometimes is in finding the music to play. The saxophone has only been around for 150 years, says Danovitch, and an original repertoire for the instrument only started developing around 50 years ago.To provide a variety of music for saxophone quartet, it often involves transcribing a classical piece for the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone combination, or having music written especially for the quartet. The situation is improving for all sax quartets, and the Danovitch quartet has played a role in this.“Our quartet has introduced quite a few new pieces for saxophone quartet,” says Danovitch, “especially by Quebec composers.” One of these is Esquisses Québécoises by Michel Perreault, to be performed at the concert next week. This is a suite which blends four well-known French Canadian folk songs with four equally well-known themes from classical compositions.KNOWS CAPABILITIES “We’ve started to get a lot of music written exclusively for us,” says Danovitch.“This is important because a person like Perreault knows what our capabilities are and he can write things for us that maybe he wouldn’t write for somebody else.” Also included in the Jan.24 concert is the Quatuor pour Saxophones by Pierre Max Dubois, Fantasia by Orlando Gibbons, a Suite of Bach Favourites by J.S.Bach, Two Short Pieces by Paquito D’Rivera.Three Preludes by George Gershwin, Nutcracker Suite Highlights by Tchaikovsky, Maple Leaf Rag and The Entertainer by Scott Joplin, and Pan-Am Rag by Tom Turpin. It’s a mixed bag, but Danovitch says there’s nothing wrong with that.“Music is music,” he says, “and if you like it, you like it.We don’t want to restrict ourselves to being as formal as perhaps some other groups are.” Danovitch plays soprano saxophone with the quartet, while Peter Freeman plays alto, Abe Kesten-berg tenor and Nancy Newman baritone. All four members of the group are part of the music faculty at McGill.Their style appears to please a lot of Montreal music lovers, where their frequent concerts at McGill University’s Pollack Hall have produced a solid following. The quartet has also been featured frequently on CBC radio and television shows such as Arts National, Let’s Talk Music.Music from Montreal.Midday and Two New Hours.ALBUM HELPS Since the recording of their first album, Sketches ( Esquisses), early last year, interest in the quartet has picked up, says Danovitch.“I think we’ve gotten some concerts that we might not have gotten because people have heard the recording,” he says. The album, which has sold about 600 copies, serves as sort of a “calling card” for the quartet when looking for engagements, he says.Interest in the quartet really began picking up in 1980, said Danovitch. In 1983, the group won the du Maurier Council for the Performing Arts competition, “Search for Stars”.In the spring the group will be making its second recording, this time on compact disc, for CBC enterprises, and Danovitch feels this should make more of a niche for them, as it’s an easier product to market and the sound is better. So far, the quartet has limited its touring to the province of Quebec, but there’s a possibility of a tour of western Canadian cities in 1988.As for next week’s concert, it should be fairly accessible to the average concert-going audience, says Danovitch, and could in fact be “a very painless way” to introduce classical music to young people who might not be too familiar with it.The concert is at 8:30 p.m.and tickets may be reserved by calling (819) 563-4966.Imagine working all of 19 days! I always knew Lennoxville’s town council was on the cutting edge of the fashion world. No sooner did the boys in charge build the Cecil Dogherty Memorial Rest Stop and Relief Centre on Queen street, than other municipalities began jumping on the band wagon. The latest town to offer “the pause that refreshes” is Niagara-on-the-Lake”.Not to be outdone, they even allocated a whopping $50,000 to construct a turreted, shingle and brick edifice that would be a worthy example of Upper Canadiana at its finest.Considering that the 1.5 million tourists that frequent the quaint old village every year will probably only spend a matter of minutes within its confines, Nia-gara-on-the-Lake’s new public convenience may be a little ostentatious. As one alderman opposed to the project aptly put it, “I hate to see the municipalities money flushed down the drain.” Just for the record — no pun intended — fewer than one third of your 104 senators managed an 85 per cent or better attendance Who’s who By TADEUSZ LETARTE record this year.Only two, William Doody and Azellus Denis, recorded perfect records while another 31 showed up for at least 16 of the 19 days the Senate worked. The key figure here is of course the 19 days the Senate worked! 19 days! No wonder senators need so much sleep.Imagine working all of 19 days! I know, I know, they have to keep long office hours and they have to read all that legislation Mulro-ney's men are pushing out.But 19 days! That's about $3,000 a day give or take a free lunch.Surprise, surprise. The leader of the federal NDP (that’s No Definite Plan), Ed Broadbent.says the national wing of the party won’t support the Quebec wing’s proposal to give all language responsibility to the provinces.John Paul Harney, the provincial leader, had come up with a scheme whereby Ottawa would keep its nose out of language issues — and we all know where that would lead.(If you don’t, pick up any newspaper from the last ten years and read any article dealing with the PQ’s language policy. Finally, three cheers for Prince Edward—the one without a wife on the cover of People Magazine.Good old Eddy, who is often referred to as the intellectual in the Windsor family because he owns more books than horses, has decided to pack in his training as a marine.Deciding he wasn’t çut out for the rigorous life of a trained killer, the princeling informed his tearful family — Prince Phillip reportedly fainted at the news — that he might pursue something a little more peaceful.Rumor has it that construction is under way at Buckingham Palace for a reported flower shop.Stand by for future developments.is not just for jazz Aug.10, 1867, was mailed to me by Mr.Alex Greene of Rockville, Maryland, (October 5,1986) and since it is impossible to keep the flavor of this text unless published in its entirety we have done it in several parts.Today we are presenting the fourth and final part. This concerns the launching of the Oxford, by which the author meant the Lady of the Lake. The season is just beginning to set in here now, and the tourists from the White Mountains flock hither at the rate of fifty or more by the arrival of each evening train.A majority of them stop one night, tasteof thelaketrout, casta glance at Owl’s Head, make the run down to Magog in the Mountain Maid, 'and then scuff off flattering themselves that they have “done” Lake Memphremagog thoroughly and exhausted the subject. Not so the select few who make their Summer tour for enjoyment and not for the fashion of the thing. They tarry here for weeks many of them remaining until October, when I am assured, and can easily believe, the scenery is more beautiful than at any other season of the year. Then too the lake trout, which now hides himself sixty feet under water and has to be caught with a tong line and sinker, rises near the surface to catch a glimpse at the Autumnal foliage, and falls an easy prey to the trolling sportsman.Indeed I think that those Summer tourists are wise who postpone their trips till the latter part of September and October, for, in addition to the cool and bracing atmosphere, the aspect of the country.especially in the New-England States, is far more enchanting at that season of the year than in the hot Summer months. The people hereabouts who cater to the amusement and comfort of visitors have been very much disappointed this season at the failure of the Lake Navigation Company to get their new steamer Oxford ready at the time advertised. It was to have been put on the Lake by the 4th of July, but has not made its appearance yet, though it will probably be ready by the middle of this Mountain Maid, which is the first and only steamer that ever plied on Lake Memphremagog, is about to be withdrawn, having been sold to the new Company.Capt.Fogg, her Commander, who for the last twenty years had pad- died the waters of the lake in very sort of craft, from an Indian canoe to a steamer, retired with the Mountain Maid, and is to be succeeded by Capt.Handyside, an experienced Lake Superior navigator. The purser of the Mountain, Mr.Geo.C.Merrill, a gentlemanly and most useful guide for tourists who travel on the Lake, is going into the service of the new company, and will occupy, the same position on the steamer Oxford. The Oxford is equal in size to most of the Western lake steamers, has double decks, large cabins, and is built with special reference to speed. She is expected here the chief and only one, except the Mountain House, at the base of Owl’s Head is the Memphremagog House where I am now stopping. It is kept by Buck & Pendar, who first opened it some five years ago, and is in every respect a first-class house. It is beautifully located on the very brink of the head waters of the lake, and will accommodate about 800 guests.Epicures from the city need not fear from what has been previously said about the Main Law up here, that there are no “cakes and ale”, at the Memphremagog.Far from it.I don’t pretend to say how Buck& Pendar get round the law, but I do know that their bill of fare is supported by a wine list which includes every variety of vinous beverage from Madame Cliquot’s brand to the California wines of Los Angeles and Sonora I am told that the wines are given away by the proprietors of the house and judging from the recklessness with which some of the guests issue their orders, I am inclined to think this is true; but when they come to settle their bills they will probably find a formidable item for toothpicks. These implements used to be furnished gratis but the modern liquor laws necessitates new rules and customs.PHOTO exhibition at the Bishop’s University-Champlian College Art Gallery from Jan.21 to Feb.6 features works in low-relief moulded paper by Jim Benson.Although Benson’s background is in sculpture, he has found recently that the images he has in mind are better expressed through two-dimensional techniques rather than through sculpture. He is able to create a sculptural effect using light paint applied to hand-made moulded paper to enhance the textural relationships of the reliefs, says a press release from the gallery.Until Feb.1, the Horace Gallery in Sherbrooke is displaying work by Pierre Lamarche, Guy Lapointe and Arthur Munk in one room, and an exhibition called Paysages d’eau by Daniel Roy in the other.Paysages d’eau examines the various symbolic interpretations of water, while in the work of the three other artists “references to art history, Boucher, Delacroix or even to Greek mytholigical figures parody artistic tradition so as to reveal the means used to produce the ‘effect’ of truth,” according the gallery’s press release. The recent work of painter Lorraine Simms, which adorns the main hall of the Cultural Centre at the University of Sherbrooke, looks at the influence of social conditioning and the cultural environment on the individual.Images of women, in limiting and stereotyped situations, abound in many of the paintings, while others use objects as symbols of power relationships (empty chairs in a boardroom, for example). Her work is largely figurative, but often has more abstract elements juxtaposed with a familiar subject, to express a more emotive response to the images presented.Simms’ exhibition continues until Feb.8.^ In the adjoining gallery, work by Quebec sculptors Sylvie Gagné, Christiane Gauthier, Jacck Janurskiewicz and Y von Proulx is featured in an exhibition on loan from the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art.Entitled Objets d'inédits, the exhibition continues until Feb.8.Until the 15th of February, assemblages by Ola Van Scoonhoven are featured in the foyer of the Salle Maurice O'Bready in the same building. These are works made of paper — ground up, stuck together, painted — and other substances which the press release says, “touch the imagination of each person, provoking questions about love, death and life.” A new exhibit opens at the Leon Marcotte Exhibition Centre in Sherbrooke Sunday.Traditional Hunting in Quebec looks at the evolution of hunting techniques and the influence of hunting on the lifestyle of our ancestors. The centre is open daily from 12:30 to 5 p.m., except for Monday, and the exhibition goes on until Feb.22.If you've been by the Granby Courthouse at 77 Main St.lately, you may have noticed sculptures and bas-reliefs exhibited in the foyer. These are works by Granby artist Yves Gendreau and they’ll be there for your perusal during business hours until Feb.6.A selection of work by young artists from Knowlton Academy, 7 Ecole St-Edouard de Knowlton and Sutton School is featured for the next three weekends at the Arts Sutton Gallery.Entitled The Début, the show will be open to the public from 11 a.m.to 5 p.m.Saturdays and Sundays.Works by Mary Martin are currently on display at the Centre Culturel Fernand-Charest in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu.This exhibition can be seen between 1 and 9 p.m.daily until Jan.25 at 190 Laurier St.There are just a couple of events to take note of this week : First, as part of the the Humanities Lecture Series at Created Within a Split is one of Lorraine of the University of Sherbrooke’s Cultural Centre.See Simms’ recent works, currently on display in the main hall Exhibitions column. jSisliop’s ïlnibcrsitp.Dr.Glen Wickens will give a talk next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.entitled “Sermons in Stones”: The Return to Nature in Hardy and Wilde.Admission to te lecture, taking place in the MacKinnon Red Room, is free, and includes refreshments and the opportunity to discuss the topics with the lecturer. And second, the Mount Sutton Ski Centre is offering a series of evenings of dining, star-gazing and starlight skiing over the winter, one taking place this Saturday.Every other Saturday you can reserve your place for a full course meal in the Altitude 700 lodge with a spectacular view of the valley, take part in a mini-session on astronomy at 9 p.m.if you like, and then ski or take the chairlift back down the mountain. To find out if there are places left for the Rendezvous with the Stars this Saturday you’ll have to call (514) 538-2545.If not, why not plan ahead for Jan.31, Feb.14 or later?Theatre/Dance I still haven’t had a chance to see it yet, but word is that the production of Pierre Halet’s Little Boy at the Salle Maurice O’Bready is something else. They’re calling it a multidisciplinary production, which means it’ not only drama, but it also incorporates dance, music and techniques borrowed from the cinema. It tells the story of one of the pilots on board the planes that dropped the atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War.and how he deals with the guilt that haunts him ever after. The play is in French, don’t let the name fool you, so prepare to concentrate if you’re not comfortably bilingual. The Aire de jeu theatre company is responsible for the production, which can be seen Wesndaysays and Thursdays at 9:30 p.m.and Fridays and Saturdays at midnight. It goes on until Jan.24 and tickets, for $12, can be purchased at the Cultural Centre box office. Now, for entertainment in the dance category, Legends of the Mackinaw, a production of the Mackinaw Folkloric Group, is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.Jan.28 at the Salle Maurice O’Bready at the University of Sherbrooke. This production, first staged in Drummondville last May, takes familiar Quebec folk tales and translates them into dance numbers with lavish costumes and special effects.Tickets to the show cost $10, and can be reserved by calling (819) 821-7744.Movies This week is clearly the time to see The Golden Child if you haven’t already. It’s playing in two different places starting tonight. One is the Cinema Princess in Cowansville, where it plays every night at 9.The other is the Merrill’s Showplace Cinemas in Newport, Vt.where it plays nightly at 7:20 and 9:25 with weekend matinees at 1:55.This is the story of an unsuspecting Los Angeles social worker (Eddy Murphy) who gets caught up in the quest for a kidnapped Oriental child, said to be the saviour of his people. The early feature at the Cinema Princess is Clue, showing at 7:15 nightly. This, if I recollect rightly, is based on the popular board game by the same name in which contestants try to solve a crime based on various clues.Apparently there’s more than one ending to the movie, and in some theatres different endings were shown at different times. The people at the Princess weren’t sure when I called if all , V j 1 / / i \ I ’¦ r : ¦ .1V, ! a N l.A > Jim Benson*s artwork, going on display at the The new season of Wonderworks premieres on Vermont ETV with ‘Walking on Air’, starring Lynn Redgrave (left) as an eccentric science teacher and Jordan Marder (right) as her student Danny, a boy in a column.the endings, or just one, would be shown there, so you’ll have to take your chances. The two other options at Merrill’s are Crocodile Dundee and Wisdom.Crocodile Dundee is showing at 7:10 and 9:30 nightly with weekend matinees at 1:45, and it tells of a rugged but lovable crocodile hunter from the outback of Australia who is tracked down by a journalist (of the gorgeous female variety, of course) who wants to write about how he survived a crocodile attack. She ends up bringing him back to the madness that is New York, which proves to be an even harder test of his survival instincts.Wisdom is said to be sort of a modern-day Robin Hood tale, about a young man who starts off on the wrong foot with the law at a tender age, and decides to stay there, to be a thorn in the side of the rich, one would assume.Wisdom is showing at 7 and 9:15 p.m.nightly at Merrill’s with weekend matinees at 2 p.m.The other English-language option in the region is Critical Condition, playing at the Cinémas du Carrefour. This comedy has Richard Pryor masquerading as a doctor, and, predictably, getting himself in a lot of hot water. This movie is showing at 7:30 and 9:45 nightly and Greatest Story Never Told.Menopause is the topic of two films being show at the National Film Board Theatre at 311 King St.W.next Tuesday. The first. The Best Time of My Life — Portraits of Women in gorgeous woman with an enigmatic smile who works as a prostitute in luxury hotels. The movie is showing in English with French subtitles. Also at the Maison, for those who are a little more comfortable with their French, is the historical drama Rosa Luxembourg, a German-made film about the strong, outspoken woman who was imprisoned and later killed for her opposition to the First World War.This shows at 9 p.m tonight through Jan.26, with a 3 p.m.matinee Sunday.Television You’ve got the TV listings right in front of you, and have probably examined them thoroughly for worthwhile viewing in the coming week, so I’ll just jog your memory about a few things coming up.Tonight at 12:05 CTV has the 1984 drama My Wicked, Wicked Ways, starring Duncan Regehr, Hal Linden and Barbara Hershey. This blues Bonhomme Carnaval will once again be the centerpiece for the annual winter frolic scheduled for early February in Quebec City.By Penny MacRae QUEBEC (CP) — Canada’s most famous snowman is back and set to kick off one of the world’s great winter bashes. As always, Bonhomme Carnaval, the mascot of the Quebec Winter Carnival, will be the centrepiece of next month’s annual frolic of dancing, sports events, games and parades.More than half a million revellers are expected to pack the historic quarter of Quebec City, Feb.5-15, for this northern equivalent of Rio de Janeiro’s carnival. The festivities begin with a fireworks display lighting up the sky above Quebec’s old town, an area of narrow streets lined with Euro-pean-style cafes and hotels in centuries-old buildings. An added attraction is Rendez-Vous 87, a week-long sports and culture extravaganza featuring some of the best hockey players and entertainers from Canada, the Soviet Union and the United States. And coverage by the popular ABC-TV network program, Good Morning America, which showcased the carnival last year, is expected to draw additional crowds. The eternally smiling Bonhomme — symbolizing Quebecers’ traditional “joie-de-vivre” — crowns the queen of the carnival at the 26-metre-high snow palace that shimmers in the shadow of the stately Quebec legislature.MAKE MERRY Wearing a 25-kilo glass fibre suit, Bonhomme — whose identity is kept secret — is the star of the carnival, commanding crowds to laugh and make merry. And make merry they do, fuelled by a particularly potent concoction of grain alcohol and port known as Caribou, which is swigged from hollow red plastic walking canes. This blend, said to be based on a recipe invented by 16th-century coureurs de bois to keep the cold at bay, has become the unofficial drink of the carnival.Quebec City residents, who endure some of the harshest temperatures anywhere, began the festival in 1880 to shake off the winter blues. The tradition died out by the turn of the century, only to be revived in 1954 by a group of businessmen who wanted to give the city’s tourist trade a shot in the arm during the usually quiet winter months.Stung by criticism in recent years that the carnival was nothing more than a giant drunk, organizers have added a number of cultural and social activities. Some require an admission fee of $6 to $10, but many are free. This year, the festival has nearly 100 events, both indoors and out, from art exhibits, parades and lumberjack contests to a beach party.TRUCK IN SAND Bermuda shorts, T-shirts, bathing suits or other summer gear will be de rigeur for this shindig at the municipal centre, where a beach will be created with sand trucked in for the occasion. While there are activities throughout the week, most of the fun is packed into the two weekends of the carnival — dubbed by organizers as the “gros zoom’’ or big rush.A key attraction is the international ice sculpture competition with contestants from nearly a dozen countries, including Spain, Finland and Japan.Inuit ice sculptors will also be displaying their talents, but not in competition.“They just won it too many times, it wasn’t fair,” explained a carnival official. There is also an exotic hairstyling and makeup competition at which hairdressers present their most fantastic creations.Or you can try your luck at the casino, a jacket-and-tie occasion. You can’t win any money but if your make-believe haul is big enough, there are drinks on the house. Not to be missed is a visit to Rue Ste-Therese in Lower Town where the human equivalent to Bonhomme resides in the person of Lionel Faucher, a 77-year-old retired street cleaner.Faucher transforms his basement into a tavern where he dispenses good will and his homemade version of Caribou cheer to all.MAKE THEIR OWN Residents of the street also construct their own ice sculptures.Last year, they ranged from Mickey Mouse to the sinking of the Titanic.Another event is the canoe race across the St.Lawrence River from Quebec City to Levis in which crews, fighting the relentless current, half drag, half paddle their crafts over a treacherous mixture of ice and water. The centrepiece of Rendez-Vous 87 festivities (Feb.8-15) is a two-match televised hockey series pitting the Soviet national hockey team against the National Hockey League all-stars, but few tickets are left. Also performing during Rendez-Vous will be the Soviet Union’s Red Army Chorus, along with such Quebec singers as Gilles Vigneault and Robert Charlebois.Even last-minute arrivals for the festivities can be accommodated, although they may have to sleep in the suburbs.“Nobody will end up spending the night on the street,” promises Raymond Plamondon, lodging committee coordinator for the carnival.Visitors can choose from rooms in private homes of hotels.Prices for rooms in private homes average about $25 per couple while hotels cost $35 and up.Those who don’t mind roughing it can stay in a makeshift dormitory for about $10 a night. The Quebec Winter Carnival’s Lodging Committee can be reached at 418-524-8441.For information on carnival activities, either write to Quebec Winter TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 1987- Travel Snakes, ghosts, smelly fruit all part of jaunt into Southeast Asia By David Gersovitz The Canadian Press Now I know how Marco Polo felt. After a recent tour of Southeast Asia, I can attest that even six weeks in the region is hardly enough for a tourist to begin to appreciate a fraction of its wonders.Thailand and Burma, for example, are filled with major Buddhist ruins and spectacular modern temples and pagodas. The problem is, after a hard day of temple touring one tends to feel a bit jaded.Maybe for that reason, some lesser features stand out in my memory as much as the awesome ruins of Pagan in Burma or the towering mass of Borobudor in Java.PASSIONS RISE The house rule at the Aurora Hotel in the East Malaysian city of Kuching is blunt: “No Durians will be permitted in this hotel.” Race hatred?Hardly. The spiny durian is one of Southeast Asia’s most popular fruits and certainly its most controversial.Admired by some for the succulent taste of its meat, the durian is widely despised for its horrific odor.“Tastes like heaven, smells like hell,” is the widely used description.Another wag likened it to sipping fine wine in a washroom.“Some guests love them and some can’t stand them,” said a desk clerk at the Aurora. The smell of durians, which are a little larger than pineapples, can get into the air conditioning and bother guests.Nor is the Aurora’s policy exceptional. The no-durian rule is posted in other Southeast Asian hotels.Malaysia’s National Museum in Kuala Lumpur is presenting a special exhibition on durians this winter, including photographs, cartoons and eight types of durian splitters.ROYAL DEVOTION You can set your watch by it: twice a day in Thailand, at 8 a.m.and 6 p.m., the national anthem is played on radio and television and is piped through loudspeakers in public places. In Bangkok’s Hua Lampong railway station, commuters stop and stand at attention. It’s quite a sight. The Thais are devoted to their royal family, especially King Bhu-mibol Adulyadej, who has reigned for 30 years. It’s a criminal offence to publicly disparage a member of the royal family.Next December the king celebrates his 60th birthday, a miles- tone for Thais because it marks the fifth 12-year cycle in a human life. The Thais have decreed 1987 to be Visit Thailand Year.Officials say they wouldn’t exploit the king’s birthday for crass economic reasons, but the facts indicate otherwise.A three-day birthday bash (Dec.4-6) is part of the long roster of Visit Thailand Year events. The king will preside at the annual Royal Barge Procession (Oct.16) and there’s a special marathon race planned for Bangkok in his honor (Nov.22).Thinking perhaps of a big tourist influx, the government announced a crackdown on prostitution in November, which raised a few eyebrows.GETS POINT There’s probably a moral in this story for the horde of on-the-cheap backpackers roaming the backwaters of Southeast Asia: A Jakarta newspaper reported that a superstitious East Java villager, walking by a field after dark and thinking he saw a ghost, panicked and attacked the apparition with a machete. After inflicting several wounds and drawing what looked remarkably like real blood, he discovered that his ghost was a foreigner grabbing 40 winks in the field.French tourist Eric Marty, on his way to Madura from Surabaya to see a bull race, thought he had found a safe and free place to bed down for the night. He spent the next two days in a Surabaya hospital.PLANE TALK Tourists can usually get by in Asia by using English, which is widely spoken and understood almost everywhere.Asian airlines use English in all their cabin announcements.Occasionally, this can be amusing, as when the Thai Airways cabin attendant kept referring to our Bangkok-Chiang Mai journey as “Fright 109.” Actually, it was a smooth flight and I imagine North Americans can sound pretty funny when they try to speak Asian languages. The prize for the most unusual in-flight announcement goes to MAS, the Malaysian airline. As our flight from Kuching was making its final descent to Singapore’s Changi Airport, a flight attendant nonchalantly reminded passengers: “The penalty for drug-trafficking in Singapore is death!” There was no rush for the toilets — not on this flight, anyway.Thailand and Burma are filled with spectacular modern temples and pagodas, such as the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Rangoon, Burma (above).SAVINGS IN JANUARY CLEARWATER -
