And we also find out that in Hong Kong, Port is considered an aphrodisiac by many! What is perhaps the finest fea- Coming March 31 NATIONAL TAP COMPANY OF CANADA CENTENNIAL THEATRE Box Office: 563-4966 LENNOXVILLE Wine Bits By TIMOTHY BELFORD ture of the book is the fact that Zraly treats wine as it should be treated, not as some sort of misterious rite enjoyed by a select group of initiates alone, but as an enjoyable part of life that all can share and — more importantly — that all can understand.Zraly also includes a fascinating section at the end of each chapter/ lesson in which he quotes the experts on what they would eat with the wines of a particular region. The reason this section holds so much interest is because of the variance between the experts, proving once again that the selection of wine, like all matters of personal taste, is open to interpretation. Also of interest, is a section at the back of the book devoted to the purchasing of wine and the organization of a wine cellar.Much of this “Surprisinglygood, isn’t it?It’s Gallo.Mort and Drawing by Weber; © 1973 I simply got tired of being snobs.” The New Yorker Magazine, Inc.chapter is devoted to the owners of restaurants who have little or no knowledge of wine and, if my ob servations are correct, would be of use to 90 per cent of restaurant proprietors in the Eastern Townships. No matter if you are an amateur looking for basic knowledge or a professional trying to improve business, the book is a gem.I purchased mine at the Classics bookshop in Sherbrooke, but I am sure it can be ordered almost anywhere.Once again; Windows on the World Complete Wine Course, by Kevin Zraly, published by Dell, $13.95.Cheers ! Les Misérables opens to mixed reviews By Calvin Woodward NEW YORK (CP) - Like the fanciful musical Cats, the somber, sweeping Les Misérables opened on Broadway to mixed reviews. Also like Cats, it has become a fast and spectacular hit that may come to Toronto in two years.Marlene Smith and Ernie Ru-benstein, producers of the Toronto production of Cats, signed a letter of agreement a few months ago with Cameron Mackintosh, Les Mi- sérables’ producer, that could bring the show to Toronto by the spring of 1989.A contract for Les Misérables, .and many details, still have to be worked out.Smith said in an interview from Toronto on Tuesday. One of Mackintosh’s stipulations is that Les Misérables must be performed in a theatre with no more than 2,000 seats.“It’s a wonderful show,” said Smith, who saw it in London.“It has brought a lot of class to Broadway at this point.” After gripping audiences in Paris and London, Les Misérables was carried to New York on a tidal wave of advance publicity that pushed the pop opera to box-office records before it opened on Broadway last Friday.Described admiringly by the New York Times, which wrote of the “electrifying showmanship” of the Broadway premiere, the adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel sold $11 million US in tickets before Feb.28 and has seats sold well into 1988.The New York critics were unanimous in their praise of Les Mise-rables’s haunting sets, which evoke the slums, factories, sewers and revolutionary barricades of 19th Century France. They were also enthusiastic about two veterans of the London show among the U S.cast — Colm Wilkinson in the pivotal role of Jean Valjean and Frances Ruffelle as the prostitute Eponine.“Start fighting to see it,” wroter Clive Barnes of The Post.“It lives up to its hype.” # W ^ TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.MARCH 20.1987—3 Select group of luminaries reject Academy Awards By Bob Thomas LOS ANGELES (AP) — If Woody Allen wins the Academy Award on March 30 for directing and writing Hannah and Her Sisters, he is likely to learn the news while tooting his clarinet at Michael’s Pub in Manhattan. That’s his Monday night custom, and that’s where he was March 29, 1978, when his Annie Hall won Oscars as best picture and for his direction and co-writing.“I know it sounds horrible,” he told an interviewer a year later, “but winning that Oscar for Annie Hall didn’t mean a thing to me.I have no regard for that kind of ceremony.“When you see who wins those things — or doesn't win them — you can see how meaningless this Oscar thing is.” Woody Allen is a member of a small, select club of luminaries for whom Hollywood's golden statuette is something less than thril- ling.Woody Allen, George C.Scott, Marlon Brando and other iconoclasts make a habit of standing up Oscar."The ceremonies are a two-hour meat parade,” pronounced Scott when he was nominated as best actor for Patton in 1971.He termed them “a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons.” PRODUCER ACCEPTS When Goldie Hawn opened the envelope for best actor, she exclaimed: “Oh, my God! The winner is George C.Scott!” The award was dutifully accepted by Patton producer Frank McCarthy.Scott never recanted, but in 1983 he made a surprise visit to the Academy ceremonies. He explained that he wanted to show the spectacle to his wife, Trish Van Devere. The most famous snub of Oscar came on the night of March 27, 1973.Marlon Brando, in a stunning comeback, had been nominated for best actor as the raspy Mafia chief in The Godfather.Hollywood speculated for weeks over whether Brando would appear. He didn’t.A sometime actress who called herself Sacheen Littlefeather appeared at the Los Angeles Music Center with an Indian costume and Brando’s 15-page speech decrying Hollywood’s treatment of the Indians.“I’m representing Marlon Brando this evening and he has asked me to tell you .that he very regretfully cannot accept this generous award,” she told the audience.Amid boos and shouts of disbelief, she delivered the essence of Brando’s speech.REFUSES OSCAR Academy records list only one other refusal of an Oscar, and that was Dudley Nichols for his script of The Informer in 1934.That was in the bad, bad days when the academy was used by the studios to cut salaries and quash unions.Nichols, a leader in the founding of the Screen Writers Guild, returned his Oscar with the message: “To accept it would be to turn my back on nearly a thousand members who ventured everything in the long, drawn-out fight for a genuine writers’ organization.” Two years later, after the Writers Guild had won recognition, Nichols accepted his Oscar. The Brando and Scott statuettes have never been claimed. But the no-show record is held by Katharine Hepburn, who has never attended the ceremonies for her 12 nominations and four awards. Her only appearance was in 1974 to present the Thalberg award to her dear friend and producer Lawrence Weingarten (Pat and Mike, Adam’s Rib). After the ovation, Hepburn remarked: “I am naturally deeply Katherine Hepburn.holds no-show record.?•V' moved.I’m also very happy that I didn’t hear anyone call out, it’s about time!’ I'm living proof that a person can wait 41 years to be unselfish.” l Entertainment shorts SANTA MARIA, Calif.(AP) — Actor-director John Derek lost out on a chance to be a juror in a burglary trial, but his wife, 10 star Bo Derek, was a hit in court. The couple wore green on St.Pa-trick’s Day for Derek’s appearance as a prospective juror.Bo, 30, who also starred in Tarzan, the Ape Man, signed autographs, including one for a Santa Barbara County court bailiff.Deputy Public Defender Michael Dealy mentioned during questioning that Derek, 60, once played a defendant convicted of murder in Knock on Any Door in 1949 with Humphrey Bogart us the defence lawyer. Here are the week’s Top 10 hard-cover fiction and non-fiction books as Director Roland Joffe says actor-sRobert De Niro and Ray McAnal-ly should have been nominated for Academy Awards for their performances in The Mission.“I was disappointed that Ray McAnally wasn’t criticizing her book.My Mother's Keeper.Davis’s book. This 7i That, which recalls her fight back from a 1983 stroke and mastectomy and talks about her four marriages, is expected to reach bookstores on March 30.It follows her daughter’s book which was published in April 1985 and, among other things, painted Davis as a “pathetic creature” because she did not play Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind.“I am still recovering from the fact that a child of mine would write about me behind my back,” Davis said.“I will never recover as completely from B.D.’s book as I have from the stroke.“There is no doubt you have a great potential as a writer of fiction. You have always been a great storyteller.” Davis added that perhaps B.D.“confused the ‘me’ on the screen with the ‘me’ who is your mother.“The sum total of your having written this book is a glaring lack of loyalty and thanks for the very privileged life I feel you have been given.” MONTREAL (CP) — Film maker Francis Mankiewicz has filed a $260,000 suit against Cine Video and Justine Heroux, producer of the film Les Fous de hassan (In the Shadow of the Wind.) Mankiewicz said author Anne Hebert yielded the rights to the book on which the film is based on condition that he write the script.Mankiewicz claims he quit the National Film Board to join Cine Video to handle the script but that Heroux fired him.The movie, directed by Yves Si-moneau and adapted for the screen byMarcel Beaulieu, is about a man returning to a small anglophone village in the Gaspé after an absence of five years.Gibson is the only L.A.cop registered as a LETHAL WEAPON CARREFOUR ,’ESTRIE " ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS -INCLUDING- BEST PICTURE "THE BEST HLM OF 1988.a great movie." HA*R:'> sightful little blurbs on the worm casts on the shores of Manitoba’s Lake Agassiz, or starfish found off Vancouver Island reveal his readily demonstrated love for the complexities of science, and they set this book apart from the usual photographic essays on the variegated topography of our eye-dazzling country. One Watermelon Seed, story by Celia Barker Lottridge, pictures by Karen Patkau (OXFORD): $10.95, colored illustrations. This is a children’s counting book in which Max and Josephine plant some fairly exotic seeds — eggplants, pepper seeds, watermelon seeds — and some usual seeds, such as corn, tomato and bean seeds, in a garden and wait for them to grow.Kids are given the number reinforcement that they need as pre-schoolers as they observe Max planting six blueberry bushes in the ground, as the family cat chases yellow and black butter- flies in the background. The harvest of all of the fruit and vegetables from the garden allows young readers to see larger numbers such as fifty, eighty and one hundred, as Max and Josephine delight in their “seventy strawberries, sweet and red”, or their “eighty stringbeans, thin and crisp”.The corn turns into hundreds and thousands of big white crunchy puffs of popcorn, as the kids celebrate their happy experience on cold winter nights when their garden has been covered with snow.Karen Patkau’s artwork is rich in colors and gives the kids lots of peripheral eyecatchers for parents to comment on as the numbers are being digested.RECORD REVIEWS Rock and Hyde UNDER THE VOLCANO (CAPITOL-EMI) Their tenure as two of the leading lights of West Coast group the Payola$ having faded out even in the face of their last album having been produced by hot ticket David Foster, Bob Rock and Paul Hyde have combined forces for an album project that represents the best writing they have ever done.Produced by Rock & Hyde and Bruce Fairbairn, UNDER THE VOLCANO has the kind of depth of texture that usually only emerges when an album has been given meticulous studio attention, with vocals, instrumentation and arrangements reflecting a great deal of painstaking care. The single release “Dirty Water” perfectly reveals that layering of vocals and pop sounds that should be greeted with mucho airplay, while the gathering of songs on the balance of the album takes in categories such as ballsy, aggressive tracks like “There’s Always Someone Tougher”; ironic children’s song such as “What Children Say”, which closes side one with its message to parents: “Little black sheep have you got any wool?/ I’ll be alright when my needle’s full/ There’s not much chance of a job anyway/ These are the things that children say”; savvy social satire in songs such as “The Blind, The Deaf and the Lame” with its witty and timely shots at television evangelists and their laughable pursuit of wealth as “ministers of the charge card church” ; and poignancy in a song with nostalgia and loneliness as themes in “Talk To Me”.Canadians are always eager to snap up the distinctive British accent in rock, with their affection for Supertramp, and Phil Collins leading the way, and Paul Hyde’s heavily accented voice should make this album not only popular here but in the United Kingdom as well.UNDER THE VOLCANO is a departure from the style of songs that were the Payola$ trademark, but if we can judge from the record’s liner notes.Rock & Hyde decided to implore producer Fairbairn to let them indulge themselves with happy results: “A very special thanks to our producer, Bruce Fairbairn who, risking sanity, did the decent thing and let us be ourselves (we can all look in the mirror in the morning now) and that’s the way it should be!” Jim Croce PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES; TIME IN A BOTTLE; DOWN THE HIGHWAY (21 RECORDS—WEA) A retrospective three album release of material from Jim Croce features some of the seventies artist’s best work.Actually the PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES album is the best buy of the three, containing as it does such Croce classics as “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”, “Operator”, the title track, “Time In A Bottle”, “I Got A Name”, “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim”, and the raucous shouters such as “Roller Derby Queen” and “Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)”.The other two albums are notable in their inclusion of more obscure songs such as DOWN THE HIGHWAY’S “Chain Gang Medley”, which features Sam Cooke’s “Chain Gang”, Curtis Mayfield’s “He Don’t Love You”, and the great Coaster’s rocker “Searchin”’.On this same album Croce also sings “Old Man River”, “Alabama Rain”, and a couple of other tracks that don't make it onto the hits packages.TIME IN A BOTTLE is a reminder that even mediocre Croce is superior to much of the dreck passing as Top 40 material these days, with “Dreamin’ Again”, “Thursday” and “These Dreams" representing some of the material that this unforgettable singer-songwriter preserved on record before the tragic plane crash that added his name to those of Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper.Richie Va-lens, and more recently Rick Nelson.as artists who have been vic- tims of air crashes.Even though Jim Croce’s music belongs to a very special era in pop music, one play of any of these three superb albums is lyrical proof that good songs are timeless and Croce’s guitar arrangements in tandem with lead acoustic guitarist Maury Muehleisen remain a standard of perfection for any guitar duos.Do someone you really like a large music favor by turning them on to Jim Croce’s inimitable style.VIDEO SCREENINGS HALF MOON STREET (EMBASSY VIDEO) American novelist Paul Theroux’s book Dr.Slaughter gets the cinematic treatment in a film directed by Bob Swaim, who also coauthored the screenplay with Edward Bear.Half Moon Street stars Sigourney Weaver as the outspoken, resolutely feminist Dr.Lauren Slaughter, who is working for the Middle Eastern Institute in London, England.By day Slaughter toils at the Institute penning articles on her specialty, the financial makeup of some of the world powers, only to have her words changed subtly and printed under the signature of some of the male chauvinist pigs she detests.By night Lauren Slaughter works for the Jasmine Agency as an escort to some of the visiting Middle Eastern bigwigs and some of Britain’s governing class such as Lord Bulbeck, played by a restrained Michael Caine.Slaughter falls for the suave Bulbeck, but unwittingly becomes the bait for a scheme which involves the very Arab gentlemen she often escorts to London’s nightly meetings, and a surprise they ha ve in store for the British lord.Along the way Weaver gets off some choice lines, such as her witty exchange with Caine, which develops as Lord Bulbeck is explaining to Dr.Slaughter that her escorting could lead to mischief: “My dear, you should be very careful”, says he.“You mean diseases and maniacs?Don’t worry! I’ve found a gynecologist who teaches karate”.What begins as a slow moving story, occasionally charged with some funny dialogue and social situations, turns into an exciting climax as Dr.Slaughter learns that her introduction to the opportunities of the Jasmine Agency was not due to chance, but that the videotape she had been mailed was merely the beginning of a carefully orchestrated plot in which she became an unsuspecting pawn for some unscrupulous Arabian gentlemen.Interest in HALF MOON STREET rides entirely on the portrayals of Slaughter and Bulbeck, and while Weaver and Caine are good in this one, more could have been made of Theroux’s book than this screenplay managed to do.(VIDEO AVAILABLE AT LE CLUB VIDEO.QUEEN STREET.LENNOXVILLE; AND AT TRE1-ZIEME AVENUE.SHER BROOKE.» LA treasure is By J.Boisvert, President This is the second part of a story about Roger's Rangers and the fate of a collection of treasures from a ransacked church.Part II Many attempts were made by money diggers in order to recuperate the treasures.Cabalistic formulas, ceremonials and plots were used for this purpose. The result was that one day as they were digging and pounding with an iron bar, the sound of a metallic box was heard (tradition said that the treasures were kept in a metallic box), a voice was raised and the box disappeared never to be found again.Burt’s Illustrated Guide: 1867 talks about Magoon’s Point, South of Georgeville, saying “An unexplored cavern exists in this locality, and it has been believed that a large amount of treasure stolen from a Roman Catholic Cathedral was secreted there.Indeed, there are persons who claim to have seen two massive gold candlesticks which were found buried in the road near the cave.” Having reached Lake Memphré-magog, Rogers cites in his report Bubbles By JACQUES BOISVERT of the Société d’Histoire du Lac Memphrémagog Inc.to General Amherst: “Rogers broke his detachment up into small companies.” Everything leads us to believe that part of his men passed on the west of the lake while the others went to the east side.We know for sure that they split up at the head of the lake (where Newport is today).Leonard Auger, our local historian, published a very well documented article relating this event in 1959.This article was also published by the Vermont Historical Society in volume 27, no.4, pages 287 to 304.Metro Goldwyn Meyer, a Hollywood film Company, inspired by Kenneth Rogers’ romantic novel of Northwest Passage, made a colored film in 1939.Part of the action takes place on Lake Memphrémagog. The shooting of the film was done in a corner of the Idaho State. The great Spencer Tracy portrayed Major Rogers.Father Gravel does not give this book much historical value.Tradition was preserved and we often hear people recalling that some of their relatives were saying that they knew where the treasures were buried Twenty-five years ago I was even approached by a Cherry River resident who asked for $5.000 payable in advance, to tell me on which farm the treasure was buried.I did not have that kind of money at the time and he later told me the name of the farmer who happened to own more than 700 acres.Good thing I did not take him seriously for, in all probability, I would still be digging. An intensive study should be made on this subject because according to Mr.Auger, Rogers’ attack means the extermination of the Abenakis. We find a similar conclusion in The Queen's York Rangers by Stewart H.Bull: “The abenakis were eliminated as a danger to frontier settlements for ever.” In 1985, there are only around 60 people only who can understand and speak Abenakis. We owe all these beautiful names: Memphremagog.Massawippi, Coaticook.etc.to this enchanting language.Rogers returned to England in 1782 He was jailed upon arrival for his numerous debts.Half his salary was given to pay his creditors during the years 1784 to 1794.He died in Borough on May 18, 1795 and was buried during a rain-fall in the church yard which later became the Elephant Hotel and Castle.“Finis Coronal Opus“ (the end crowms the work).Note from the author: In order to write these articles, archives are of the geatest importance, to us it’s just that you hear about the scandals much more frequently. He soon learned that Christianity can (and does) exist outside the church: it’s not just a one-hour gig on Sunday mornings.Although he says God has never spoken to him directly, he has received messages from God that have told him what direction to take in his life.He says it’s as if God was looking at his professional music career and saying, “OK Nick, that’s a pretty good idea but this is my plan for you.I said, ‘OK God that’s pretty wild.I hadn't though of that but I’ll go alongwith that’.” “God was telling me I want you to be you and be a priest.’ When I caught up with him in my slow, fumbling way, I said OK, OK.” And he did catch up.He spent three years at theology college in Nottingham, England, despite the reaction from his rock and roll peers.NEED GOOD LEADERS “It’s a scary transition into the priesthood. Some of my music peers told me it was a cop out but some said at last, there's someone out there who knows what we have been through because he has been there. It was a kind of symbol for them.We need good leaders who are visibly human." He went to work at an inner city church in Nottingham where 50 per cent of the church population was under the age of 30.He saw punk rockers kneeling down to take communion with the elderly ladies. The experience he says, was fantastic.“I know what it feels like to be an outsider.Jesus was always bringing in outsiders to become Jesus’ family. We must be careful not to makeitour club —it’s Jesus' family," he said.“Religious life is not just one hour on Sunday and then the other life.I can’t see how people get that from the Bible.” out as rock musician Brotherwood and infant son Matthew send a group of young Christians off on a sleigh ride.^ • V/ ; ' ' «Jr ¦ Brotherwood and his wife Sue and three children (now there are four) believed that they would eventually return to London to work at a church there. But that didn’t happen.God had another plan for the Brotherwoods. He had worked in various camps in Canada before but had always gone back to England to continue his studies. One day, he got a phone call asking him to consider the job as director at Quebec Lodge Camp — a Christian camp owned and On the cover: Rev.Nick Brotherwood stands outside one of the Quebec Lodge camp’s buildings with his son, Matthew.look at the camp.It was cold and grey and when the Brotherwoods saw the old farmhouse where they were to live, they were less than impressed about the whole idea.“God was telling me 7 want you to be you and be a priest.’ When / caught up with him in my slow, fumbling way, 1 said OK, OK.** operated by the Anglican Diocese of Quebec since 1953.SO ISOLATED “At first it seemed crazy. It seemed ludicrous. It was so isolated here. There were no neighbors and being city people, that’s one strike." job. They were interested but another delay stood in their way.Sue Brotherwood’s father was dying of lung cancer and the family wanted to be with him.The Quebecers said they would keep the job open as long as was necessary. The Brotherwoods felt it was another indication from God.“We all felt it was right to come people of the Anglican church in Quebec. We have to make sense of what we have. It’s not just rural people who must adjust to rural life,” he said. This past week, the Brotherwoods were off to British Columbia to look at a similar centre and get some ideas of what could be done here on the 167 acres of land in Ayer’s Cliff.“It doesn’t have to be an exclusively Anglican place. It should be a place where people can discover Christianity and how it works.” “If people want it.it will happen but it wouldn’t be right to try to bulldoze something through. We have to let people have a look at it.” This summer the Brotherwoods are expecting 250 youths who will “/ know what it feels like to be an outsider.Jesus was always bringing in outsiders to become Jesus1 family. We must be careful not to make it our club — it's Jesus1 family.” so we came,” said Brotherwood. They arrived September 5, 1986 to take on their new life in North America and their first Canadian winter. And now, six months later, Brotherwood has taken on his new life and his new job with full force. He’s got big plans for Quebec Lodge but they are plans he knows, won’t happen overnight. He hopes to have fitness trails built and other athletic facilities as well; cross country skiing, windsurfing, etc.It will be a place where people will not only go to think about Christianity, hut to live it as well.HAVE TO MAKE SENSE “It’s no good if it’s simply my dream. It has to be the dream of the participate in junior and senior coed camps, an adventure week and a special arts camp the Brotherwoods have devised themselves — an easy task for a musician and his wife who is a dancer.Brotherwood says there have been strong links between Christianity and culture except for the past 100 years when the attitude at the church has changed.“Until the 19th century the church was a great, great patron of the arts.” “Church going has moved from a social event to an option. There are those who have remained defensive even sometimes inwardlooking. The church has to provide an accessible form of worship so people coming in off the streets can understand it.Culture never stops The Quebec Lodge camp is situated in 167 acres of woodland and meadows on the shores of iMke Massawippi, and its aim is to prepare people to take their places as Christians in today's world.changing,” he said.“The church exists in a cultural context. We’ve got to take a look at that.” “The Church has got to be involved where the people are.” SIGNS OF CHANGE And indeed, Brotherwood admits, the attitude about the church and even the church itself are showing signs of change. There are more Christian bands on the pop music scene than there ever were before — that’s a sign of the times.Brotherwood says it’s good to see Christian bands like Stryper and singer Amy Grant doing so well on the mainstream charts.“It’s hard for Christian rock and rollers. They are pushed away fom the church.” “Look at Cliff Richards. He was a 4 top 40 star and then he became a Christian and he’s still on the top 40 charts.” “What’s happening now is the way it should be.There are Christian artists working in the regular fold.” Brotherwood’s heart still partially lies in music although he says he doesn’t listen to it as much as he used to.He still puts on the old Motown and Genisis hits (his favorite) but can enjoy new bands like Canada’sGlassTigerand the Pointer Sisters. For the moment, Nick, Sue, Adam, Pippa, Kate and Matthew Brotherwood have settled in for the next three years at Quebec Lodge until they have another message from God about where their next mission is to be.Leaders of Anglican youth groups throughout the province met at the camp on telling the story of some pretty ordinary people in a pretty ordinary little town at the turn of the century, the play illustrates just how valuable the seemingly unimportant events and simple pleasures of life are to us.The Bishop’s University drama department is making a bit of a departure from the familiar versions of the play, where the set is minimal. As designer Peter McHugh explains, the author called for a stage that was practically bare as sort of a reaction against the overly realistic and complex backdrops that were common in the theatre of the day (the late 30s).This production will attempt to make the same comment by providing pieces of a set that are obviously pieces of a set — with no attempt to hide the carpentry work that holds them up.or anything like that.Showtime is 8 p.m.and if you'd like more information, call the box office at (819) 563-4966.By sheer coincidence there’s a French version of the same play, \otre Petite Ville, planned for March proves to be naive and gullible in the face of some of the absurdities of life. The play starts out with him in prison, not knowing why, and once released he’s thrown out of the house by his wife, who is now living with another man ; his boss fires him ; and he is further rendered helpless by cruel tricks his doctor and the government play on him.The final blow is then dealt by none other than God Himself. The characters, wearing outrageous costumes, are stylized and three dimensional, giving the whole play a comic strip element.Comment M.Mockinpott fut libéré de ses tourments will be performed Sunday matinee at 1:15 p.m Kathleen Turner puts in a wonderful performance as a woman who, through some strange circumstanceson thenightof a high-school reunion, goes back 20 years in time to relive a time in her youth when she made some big decisions that determined how her life would turn out.Given that she’s on the verge of marital break-up that’s tearing her apart, the dilemna she relives is whether she would marry her dashing beau if she could do it all over again. It’s a sweet and poignant film that leaves you thinking about what you'd do differently in your own life — and particularly most popular attractions By Leslie Shepherd HILO, Hawaii (CP) — The Big Island of Hawaii is getting even bigger. The island, already by far the largest in the Hawaiian chain, has grown by more than 50 hectares during the latest eruption of Ki-lauea Volcano, as molten lava hardened into rock when it hit the Pacific Ocean. In its fiery run from a vent on the east side of the volcano down to the sea, the lava has destroyed homes, blocked highways and caused millions of dollars of damage.Yet Kilauea, known as the “drive-in volcano” because most of it is so accessible, and Mauna Loa, the island's other active volcano, are two of Hawaii’s most popular tourist attractions.Evidence of past volcanic activity is everywhere in Hawaii.Old lava flows are marked by roadside signs and even the Kailua-Kona airstrip was smoothed out of an ancient lava flow.VOLCANOES ACTIVE The volcanoes, considered the most active in the world, are located in Volcanoes National Park, a two-hour drive from the Kona coast on the west side of the island and a one-hour drive from the capital city of Hilo on the rainy east coast. That’s assuming, of course, that you haven't plunked down a minimum of $110 US for a helicopter tour of the volcanoes.A drive through the park takes you past not only the huge craters and old lava flows but also steam vents hissing out foul-smelling sulphuric gas from the bowels of the earth.Surrounding the craters is barren land so closely resembling the EXCLUSIVELY: moonscape that American astronauts trained there to get a feel of what it would be like to walk on the moon.Yet just down the slopes are lush green fern jungles and wooded areas full of colorful wild orchids, birds and butterflies.ADMISSION FREE Admission to the park is free and there are visitors’ centres at both the east and west entrances complete with brochures, leaflets and up-to-the-minute maps showing which roads are closed because of volcanic activity. There is also an hourly film at the Kilauea Visitor Centre at the west entrance explaining how volcanoes are formed and how they behave. But bring a sweater.Despite the island’s tropical image, the northern side of Kilauea’s summit is 1,200 metres above sea level and the weather is often cool and rainy. There’s no record of freezing temperatures at Kilauea, but snow can be found in winter at the 3,000-metre mark on Mauna Loa.Most eruptions at Kilauea and Mauna Loa are mild and predictable.Their activity is monitored around the clock by scientists at the Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory on the island.Kilauea has been erupting intermittently for four years. The current phase began in July and intensified in November. It’s too dangerous to drive near the actual lava flows, which can be as hot as 1,100 degrees C, so roads leading to that area are blocked to tourists.PASSES CRATERS Unfortunately, that has sometimes included the popular Chain of Craters Road, a 50-kilometre drive from the park’s eastern visitor’s centre that passes by several craters formed in prehistoric times as well as more recent lava fields which sometimes resemble deformed heads and bodies.Check before leaving. But a good consolation prize is Crater Rim Drive, a 17.5-kilometre road circling Kilauea Crater, which according to legend is the home of Pele, the volcano goddess.Allow at least one hour to make the trip because there are many trails and specially marked camera stops overlooking the crater. The road passes numerous vents which spew out gases and billowing steam clouds.Don’t get too close — they’re as hot as they look. Those with respiratory problems are advised to stay clear of the vents altogether. The park is a popular spot for hikers.Trails range from a half-hour stroll to a three- or four-day climb up to Mauna Loa’s summit. However, hikers are warned to stay on the trails. The surface of Kilauea is laced with deep cracks, many of which are hidden by vegetation.Recent lava flows collapse easily. There’s more of Hawaii to love since the last eruption Volcano, which added more than 50 hectares to the Big if* m'r- IjÉSmu' of the Kilauea Island.Hawaii golf course presents unique traps By Jim Sheppard KONA, Hawaii (CP) — The golf ball soars off the tee into the cloudless tropical sky, then drops quickly to the left of the lush green fairway lined with waving palm trees.Suddenly, it’s back in the air again, leaping once, twice, then three times at crazy angles.A pinging sound drifts back on the slight breeze as Madame Pele, Hawaiian volcano goddess, claims yet another errant drive to her bosom in the maze of black lava rocks that substitute for rough at Waiko-loa Beach Golf Course. It’s hard to know whether to be annoyed at having to tee it up again — at the cost of another couple of strokes and another couple of dollars for a lost ball — or bemused at having fallen victim to a skilfully planned trap.PARIS • LONDON • AMSTERDAM • BRUSSELS $ 383 00 DEPARTURE TIL MAY 15TH, 1987 MAXIMUM STAY
