mât *w*if 1 5-Hlli I .W$k‘S J*Lm »*>*„>* v 2—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 1987 California wines have arrived! Wine bits By Timothy Belford I’m not too sure what has come over the Société des Alcools lately, but whatever it is I like it.Recently the SAQ announced that it would be stocking an increased number of American wines — particularly those from California. This can only be good news for the province’s wine drinkers since California produces an amazing variety of wines spanning the entire price and quality spectrum. If the SAQ makes the right choices from the thousands available, it could be an exciting summer. To make things even better, the gentlemen who control the province’s wine taps announced Wednesday that beginning shortly the province’s liquor outlets will begin stocking more Australian wine as well. With few exceptions, the wines from down under do not have the reputation for exceptional quality that California has developed but this may be as much a product of the lack of exposure as anything else. What I do know, for sure, is that it is going to be enjoyable “researching”.One of the Californian wi.es presently available is the 1985 Geyser Peak Chenin Blanc from the Alexander Valley ol Cci.oma County.A splendid white wine with the distinctive Chenin Blanc bouquet of fruit and flowers, this wine is delightful. With its straw-yellow color and fresh taste it is an ideal wine for sipping or for a meal.Geyser Peak has had a rather dubious history, however.Owned by the brewing giant, Schlitz, it produced largely bulk wines of no redeeming character until it was sold to the Trionc family of Sonoma Valley in 1983.If the Chenin Blanc is any indication, the sale was a welcome one.(Price $8.55).A second recently-available Californian wine is the 1982 Alma-den Pinot Noir.According to 1984 statistics, Almaden is the third largest winery in the United States. With sales of more than 13.4 million cases per year it is definitely a giant.Unfortunately, like other mega-wineries, much of its production is focused on the mass market and therefore devoted to ‘jug wines’ of often middling to poor quality. This particular wine, however, is a varietal made from the same pinot noir grape that produces the finest Burgundies.A garnet red, the wine is just starting to show its age but a clean, flowery bouquet with a hint of oak and a good, warm, lingering taste makes it well worth trying at $8.95 a bottle. To find a comparable taste in a Burgundy, you would have to pay considerably more. There are numerous other Californian wines available — many of which I hope to try in the next few weeks — and word is that continued stocking of these wines will depend upon sales so I suggest you try them while you can.Cheers ! Maybe the makers of Ex-lax would like to sponsor the House of Commons.Or perhaps the Poly-Grip people could sponsor the Senate. The possibilities are endless. And you think the Office de la Langue Française gets a little nit-picky now and again.Pitty poor little Prune Borneck of Paris, France.A prosecuting attorney there has ruled that the name Prune is not only absurd but illegal! That’s right, according to an 1803 law promulgated by Napoleon (now that’s absurd) forbids the naming of children with names considered by the state as unseemly.Along with Prune, the government has rejected such appellations as Marjorie, Jade, Vanille, and Cerise. The whole problem started with the revolution when patriotes started naming their children Egalité and Fraternité etc. Some even picked up a socialist theme with Charbon (coal) or Cheval (horse).Anyway, Napoleon said enough Who’s who By TADEUSZ LETARTE was enough and the law was passed.Imagine the problems it would cause in North America. In the field of exotic dancing alone we would lose Candy Bar, Piece de Resistance and the ever popular Chesty Morgan. My God, if this law had been in place in the ’60s we would have lost Moon Unit Zappa.Rae Dawn Chong, dozens of Rainbows and a sprinkling of Aldebe-rons.Even Ima Hogg, daughter of James Hogg Governor of Texas from 1891 to 1985, would have lost her one claim to fame. And what about Noodles Romanoff, a high school friend of wine columnist Tim Belford’s, or Lynn Cockshot, apparently an acquaintance of Record staffer Melanie Gruer.Even onetime Sherbrooke resident Dr.Mokthar Bokthar would be in danger. To paraphrase, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, the government has no place in the naming of the nation. Finally, congratulations to Archduke Brian Baloney and the ten premiers of Canada’s provinces — Serbis, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Albania, Bulgaria and Quebec — for ensuring our province is now part of Canada.I’m sure you’ve all noticed WEEK-FRIDAY.JUNE 12.1987—3 Jews still in rural E.T.area By Jack Branswell SHERBROOKE — It will be four years ago in August that the only Jewish synagogue in Sherbrooke shut its doors. The reason: during high holiday services (Minyan) a quorum of 10 has to be maintained all day long. With only 10 families in the area at the time the tradition could not be kept up.The Jewish community has dwindled to five families, most of those being older couples.Claire Heilig and her husband, Daniel are one of those five.“We are the hub of the Jewish families here, and that doesn’t say much,” she says “This was once a thriving community of sixty families.” She recalls the days when Wellington street was full of stores owned by Jewish merchants. Those days are long over, but despite the bleak demographic outlook there are some possibilities for a Jewish renewal in the area.Sherbrooke may be a lost cause, but about 40 Jewish families rea-main in the townships. Some of those families are living in rural areas, which makes contact among the townships Jews that much harder.Marsha Schwartz and her husband Charles, along with two of their four children, live on a farm near Stanstead. They prefer country life over city life.As a Jew in a rural area Schwartz said she feels like, “an outsider in every way.Society doesn’t let you forget who you are.I am not saying that is bad, just that it is a fact.” Schwartz has been doing some work for a conference on Jews living in rural areas. The fifth annual is being held at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, from June 26 to 28.The conference is directed at helping Jewish familes living in rural areas find solutions to thieir problems, such as how to raise children in the Jewish tradition in an isolated area.Schwartz is quick to point out that Jews have traditionally been agrarian people, and that only in the last 60 years have they started urban roots.Rural Jewish communities are often referred to as the second diaspora, or those who were dispersed. The first diaspora was the dispertion of the Jews after the Babylonian exile in ancient biblical history. While the reference is ton-gue-in-cheek, it is nontheless how Schwartz feels. She is American-born, but moved to Canada in 1972 when her husband took a management consulting job in Montreal. They stayed there for six years, until they became fed up with the urban environment. They did not like the values of the big city, “we chose to be isolated.” Schwartz says her and her husband are, “products of the 60s.” That, she wants to make clear, does not make them hippies or conversely yuppies, only people who, “have a distinct sense of what is right and wrong.” Paradoxically moving away from a large Jewish community in Montreal to a widely dispersed one The old Jewish synagogue in Sherbrooke, pictured above, closed four years ago in August.in the Townships has brought the family closer together.“We do more here than we did in Montreal, moving away has made us stronger.” Schwartz is referring to family life, and their religious life.“We have to drive 50 miles to a synagogue — in the States — they (Montrealers) have to drive around the corner, and we go more often.” Schwartz is looking forward to the conference for two reasons: there are some important Jewish experts who will be speaking, and secondly because she believes some form of renewal for jews in the area is possible. She says a Harvard student is thinking of starting a Moshav, a cooperative farm, in the area. She also knows of a Montreal journalist, Schloime Peril, who is thinking of starting up a newspaper for rural Jews in the area. The farm, accor- ding to Schwartz, “could be a very good take-off point for a newspaper.” They both could succeed if they work together, she says.As for the speakers at the conference, Schwartz is looking forward to hearing Chalom Schirman, Israeli Consul-General in Montreal, Lisa Ornstein, a fiddler from Quebec City (another place with a small Jewish population), and Jewish feminist and author, Blu Greenberg. The conference will also discuss inter-marriage between Jews and non-jews, which is a huge question for all Jews.Schwartz wants to stress that everyone including gentiles are welcome. As for the va-ring degrees of feeling Jewish Schwartz says everone can fit in at this conference.“It is a place where people can feel at ease with being as little or as much of a Jew as they are.” “PERFECT! In conjunction with Montreal director Jack Langedijk and his Association of Producing Artists, LBT is putting on a total of 36 performances of three plays this summer — Same Time Next Year,, the Broadway smash and TV spinoff The Odd Couple by Superstar playwright (you win, Julie) Neil Simon, and Accidental Death of an Anarchist by Dario Fo.“I just helped to put the season together,” Langedijk said.“These people are working very hard for little or nothing. It brings you back to what theatre is all about again.” “It’s fun and not pretentious,” he added.“Nobody here is pretentious.” There won't be more pretention, but there should be still more fun, if the dynamic Stevens has her way.“We’re planning on continuing our spring and fall amateur productions,” she said, “and if everything goes well, we are planning to do a family-type musical around Christmastime.” As if that’s not enough, Stevens added, extra performances may be booked this summer to more than fill the troupe’s ‘spare time’.“We’re contemplating rainy-day matinées.” Lac Brome play a chuckle a minute KNOWLTON — If the opening-night audience is any indication, Lac Brome Theatre’s opening production this summer will be a big success.Bernard Slade’s Same Time Next Year has what it takes, and the modest dramatic company took what it offered and has given it the makings of a hit. With an average age politely described as ‘fifty-plus’, but ranging from teenagers to senior citizens and including a youngish reviewer, theatre-goers at Wednesday’s show enjoyed a chuckle a minute all night long, with several hearty laughs in each of six neat scenes.Although the Canadian-born Slade is a master of the one-liner, he underpins this comedy with a mixed but serious message: No matter how complex it may seem from day to day, life keeps on going on.Same Time comes as close to the definitive bedroom farce as seems possible. The only set is an ordinary motel bedroom somewhere in the United States (which doesn’t seem to age during the 24-year span of the play), and the only characters are its occu- pants George and Doris, who escape from their relatively mundane real-life relationships for one Saturday-night-to-Sunday morning a year, during all those two-dozen years.George, played by British-born 26-year old David Clarke, is a typical twit.An accountant and self-considered intellectual, George is insecure with a heavy dose of bravado, guilt-ridden and hysterical to the point of neurosis.Slade’s lines and Clarke’s delivery make him funnier than he would be in life, a parody of the real small-time crazy.Doris, on the other hand, is a well-adjusted homemaker “who never even finished high school.” Played by 26-year-old Montrealer Eileen Sproule, Doris is more down to earth (or is it up-front), but somehow fell for crazy George the night before the play started.Under the seemingly easy-going direction of another Montrealer, Jack Langedijk, both players have been given the artistic room to carry their roles with pride and presence, appealing to the audience as ordinary human beings, faults and |iiin\\\\\\\\\ SKSUSSKSSSS boutique \ \ 'ante .::::: 2000 I l I ! TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY.JUNE 12, 1987—5 Book gives fascinating insider’s view of cola wars The Other Guy Blinked: How Pepsi Won The Cola Wars by Roger Enrico & Jesse Kornbluth (BANTAM): $22.95, 280 pp.In the spirit of Lee lacocca’s book about how he pulled Chrysler up by its bootstraps and turned it into a challenging car company and part of the Big Three once again, Roger Enrico’s story of the Cola Wars is the inside scoop on the marketing moves behind a number of strategies employed by Pepsi in the past five years.THE OTHER GUY HOW PEPSI WON THE COLA WARS ROGER ENRICO o;:a Kaleidoscope -JESSE KORNBLUTH Enrico goes lightly on his meteoric rise up the corporate ladder — in 1971 he worked with Frito-Lay as its President in Japan, did a stint in Rio de Janeiro as VP of Pepsi in Latin America, became VP of Marketing for Frito-Lay in Dallas, then moved from Senior Vice-President of Pepsi to become President and Chief Executive Officer of the soft drink conglomerate in 1983 — choosing to concentrate on the marketing ploys that Pepsi has had to adopt over the years in going head to head with the gigantic Coke company and its worldwide stranglehold on the refreshment industry. We learn how the Pepsi Challenge, in which the number two cola took on Coke in the now infamous, and supersaturated campaign to reveal that most average drinkers of colas would prefer Pepsi in (supposedly) unrigged taste tests, began to grow stale and how Enrico and his mates seized upon the rising star of Michael Jackson for their thrust into the New Generation, teen-pleasing marketing strategies.Enrico’s courting of Jackson, with his colleagues knowing absolutely zilch about rock music or teen idols, takes on a comic-opera complexion as the elusive, reclusive, and decidedly oddball (he wants to buy the remains of the Elephant Man?) Jackson proved less than co-operative in the shooting of the now famous commercials for Pepsi. The by-play between Jackson’s entourage and management and their desires for special considerations for their star and the staid, conservative Pepsi exec’s reveals just how isolated CEO’s can become from the mainstream of American life. The pursuit of Jackson as corporate symbol leads Enrico's forces into the celebrity wars and the bid- By RICHARD LONEY ding for the services of such luminaries as Lionel Richie, Don Johnson of Miami Vice, Michael J.Fox.Whitney Houston and other singers/actors forms a large part of the narrative of The Other Guy Blinked. In addition to the behind the scenes wrangling over dollars, seconds of exposure, saturation of commercials and refusal rights over advertising company initial shoots of TV spots, Enrico fills us in about other Pepsi ventures that had maximum effect on the way we refresh ourselves. He discusses the whole complex game that went on in the move from saccharin to Aspartame and how Diet Coke seemed to have the inside edge on the new sweetener: the introduction of the new product line, Slice, is chronicled; the disastrous decision to have Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro as a spokeswoman for Diet Pepsi shortly after her stunning defeat in the elections is included as a primer on how not to advertise. The corporate in-fighting, as revealed from Enrico’s rather prejudiced point of view, seems to be predicated on the inescapable fact that Pepsi has been number two to the giant Coke for almost 90 years, and with the decision of the leader to introduce “New Coke”, Enrico claims the victory his book’s title refers to.In gunfighter terms Coke and Pepsi had stoof toe to toe for the whole of their corporate lives, and then with the innovation of having a one-gloved, pirhouetting singer of disco-rock hawking their drink, Pepsi claims that the other guy blinked.Coke’s much discussed move to abandon their formula that ensured their lead in the Cola Wars is discussed at length by Enrico, but Coke’s side of the reasoning is only speculated about. The discussions of market shares, percentages of colas versus fruit-based drinks, etc., are about as exciting as reading a balance sheet, but thankfully Enrico keeps this numerology to a minimum. In this book we are given a fascinating view of the inside moves that ensure that corporate executives such as Pepsi’s Roger Enrico maintan a salary scale that keeps them competitive with earners such as Michael Jackson's agent RECORD REVIEWS The Nylons HAPPY TOGETHER (ATTIC-A&M) The style that they pursue so tunefully is rooted in the 50s, ever to be associated with the wonderful vocal ambience provided by The Platters, The Silhouettes and scads of doo-wop groups, but the Nylons reach back to the 60s for the title track to their latest chord happy album HAPPY TOGETHER.The Garry Bonner/Alan Gordon tune that led to the short but influential careeh of The Turtles (with “Happy Together” in March of 1967 they pushed “Penny Lane" by the Beatles out of the number one spot, and continued with “She’d Rather Be With Me” and “Eleanor” as substantial hits, following their debut with a cover of Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe”) is given a lush choral effect by the Nylons, acapella except for some percussion backing.Paul Cooper handles the lead vocals on this and most of the other Nylon songs on this their fourth album, which was produced by L.A.mainstay Val Garay at Record One in the glitter capitol. The other nine tunes were produced in Toronto at Manta with Bill Henderson, formerly of Chilliwack, sitting at the board and pushing the Nylons along a route that mixes oldies by the Turtles and Sam Cooke (“Chain Gang”) and the Nordique’s victory song, “Kiss Him Goodbye”, with several songs penned by Cooper and the other members of this talented vocal quartet.“Face In The Crowd” comes across as an uptempo R&B song which proves that you don’t have to have an address in Michigan to sing strong Motown material; “Grown Man Cry” really lets the four voices of the Nylons strut their stuff on a song written by Claude Morrison, who also takes the lead line; and “A Touch Of Your Hand” is easily the most romantically beautiful of the superb voicings that the Nylons get into on this album that repays each fresh playing with added vocal surprises.Dan Fogelberg EXILES (CBS-FULL MOON) Despite his confession that he’s always been a rock and roller at heart, Dan Fogelberg's eleventh album will be a disappointment to those who admired his wistful, aching love songs laid against acoustic guitars and intertwined keyboard parts.Soft rock’s loss is, unfortunately, not harder rock’s gain, as Fogel-berg’s EXILES is mediocre at best.Fans of this singer”songwri-ter may find that this album sinks into obscurity as quickly as his last, in April 1985.did.HIGH COUNTRY SNOWS did not do the business that THE INNOCENT AGE, with its four hit singles pulled off.and EXILES appears to be nothing very special either.Perhaps it’s the material — most of which is inspired by Fogelberg's wading through the morass of divorce proceedings — with its themes of being exiled, lonely in love, hearts in decline, last farewells and such, but mostly it’s the fact that most of the tracks just sound like speeded up versions of love songs, with rock instrumentation laid on.Whatever the reason, Fogelberg’s debut in the rock genre is sure to be a discouragement to his further venture into rock, as only the slower, more characteristic tracks are worth the listening to here.“Seeing You Again” is a beautiful ballad, and “The Way It Must Be” recalls the hits like “Longer” and the platinum albums such as SOUVENIRS and CAPTURED ANGEL.The direction that co-producer Russ Kunkel attempted to take Fogelberg in on EXILES has already been exploited by another of his friends, James Taylor, and perhaps for his next album Dan Fogelberg will revert to form and produce and sing some more of his ori-ginal if folky material.VIDEO SCREENING MOSQUITO COAST (WARNER HOME VIDEO) If the film made of Mosquito Coast by director Peter Weir doesn’t quite work as well as it might, the fault may be that the book by Paul Theroux did not seem to come off just right either. The story is a timely one, about a half-crazed inventor named Allie Fox (Harrison Ford) who packs up his wife and four kids and says “Goodbye America, and Have a nice day!” and ships out for Central America.Fox is disgusted with the fast food, slipshod workmanship, instant sell-out to Japan, death on the streets mentality that he sees gripping his beloved America. When pre-pubescent teens will knife you for a quarter in Manhattan, it's time Allie Fox takes his twin daughters and two sons, and docile wife to forge a new beginning in the fabled country of Mosquitia somewhere near Panama.Ford is believable as the manic, invention-happy Allie Fox, and his attempt to carve a place out of the jungle at a dilapidated, deserted town named Geronimo invites all kinds of the problems he thought he had left America to escape.Religion raises its head in the form of a Jerry Falwell-style fun damentalist who can’t even get his biblical quotes accurately attributed to the right book, and Fox’s invention of an ice-making machine to show the wonder of civilization to the natives ends in disaster.Weir’s filming uses the beautiful images of long, Amazonian rivers stretching into emerald green rain forests, and the movie has a certain comic charm as we watch Allie Fox’s family (with River Phoenix as the narrator, Charlie, the eldest son) rankle into rebellion against their eccentric father’s quest for stasis in a changing world. The screenplay has the expected concession to a Hollywood ending, but the film leaves the viewer wishing that it had been something more.(VIDEO AVAILABLE AT LE CLUB VIDEO.QUEEN STREET, LENNOXVIL LE; TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.JUNE 12.1987- Twilight trial changes Hollywood moving making LOS ANGELES - Despite the acquittal of film director John Landis in the Twilight Zone manslaughter case, the high-profile trial has left an indelible mark on the movie industry.Although most in the business maintain that moviemaking is relatively safe, the death five years ago of actor Vic Morrow and two children on a film set and the scrutiny that has followed has led to more self-policing in the industry. At the same time, it has spawned a heightened awareness of the need for safety on film sets that industry officials say would have come about no matter what the outcome of the trial.“Hollywood doesn’t really care about verdicts,” says one producer.“It responds very much to bad publicity.” Adds Mark Locher of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG): "The major impact occurred after the accident. The tragedy made everyone step back and look at what goes on.” In the cap to the 10-month trial, Mr.Landis, associate producer George Folsey Jr., production manager Dan Allingham, special-effects coordinator Paul Stewart, and helicopter pilot Dorcey Wingo were found innocent of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the three deaths in the filming of the movie Twilight Zone in 1982.The accident was believed to be the first in which young children were killed on a set.Landis was also the only Hollywood director to have been criminally charged for deaths under such circumstances. The jury’s acquittal of all five on all counts caught many inside and outside the industry by surprise, but no one more than Lea Purwin D’Agostino, the prosecutor in the case, who said she was “shocked.” Nevertheless, jurors indicated that no one could have foreseen the crash of the helicopter that caused the deaths, and thus, as one put it: “ Y ou don’t prosecute for an unforeseeable accident.” For Landis, director of such box-office hits as Trading Places and Animal House, the acquittal means he will be able to get on with his career, though it appeared not to be slowed much by the accident anyway.Since the tragedy five years ago, he has directed four films.Even so, the talented but sometimes brash director is not out of the woods yet.He still faces civil lawsuits filed by the parents of the two dead children. Moreover, the Directors Guild of America (DG A), of which Landis is a member, is considering whether its safety committee should launch an inquiry of its own.As for Hollywood, the verdict is expected to have little impact on the way movies are made, but a number of changes have come about already.A joint union-management safety committee - in the works before the accident occurred - has been set up within the industry to promulgate guidelines.SAG has instituted a 24-hour hotline and safety team to deal with emergencies and has encouraged members to use the right of refusal guaranteed in contracts if they believe a scene is unsafe. At one point during the controversy over the movie deaths, state lawmakers considered imposing tighter regulations on the industry. But the idea was scotched after many in the film community testified that such a move would do more harm than good.Indeed, many in the business argue Hollywood is essentially a safe place to work.SAG claims accidents involving actors and stunt men have dropped in recent years -from 214 mishaps in 1982 to 66 last year. There have been at least six deaths on film sets in the last three years.“Those of us who are out there everyday are very aware of what is going on, and we do an awful lot to ensure safety,” says a TV producer.Actor Vic Morrow and two child actors were killed on the set of the movie Twilight Zone.Above is the set from the movie The Color of Money. Not everyone is so sanguine, however. Some critics argue that a “code of silence” exists among stunt people that masks the extent of the safety problem.“It is a problem that has been there, and it is a problem that is growing as Hollywood’s appetite for bigger and bigger special effects increases,” says Gerald Kroll, a Los Angeles attorney who has represented several people in- jured on sets in recent years. While many in the industry agree that special effects have become more elaborate and prevalent, they note that new technologies and greater skills among stunt people have helped offset the risks. All of which is to say the debate over film safety is likely to continue.“I think ostensibly there will be more caution for a time. But, in effect, if they had the same shot to do again they would find a way to do it,” says Saul David, producer of several movies that use a lot of special effects, referring to the Twilight Zone scene.“If the audience says it wants more death defying and terrible stunts,” he adds, “They (filmmakers) are going to give them more death-defying and terrifying stunts.” Ateotf Super Summer Specials On 4 x 4 Family vans and trucks The Servke people! message too Rtf lar-lr Rroneu/oii havoc on the family's home, and tune to be made off Bigfoot. He ÆKÊÊ^mmÊÊmÊmmm,, By Jack Branswell Everyone has heard about Bigfoot, but few have actually seen the legendary creature.Well the Hendersons have had that illustrious pleasure. The Hendersons are on a unique camping trip — they watch Masterpiece Theatre in their tent — when they run into the fluffy guy.To be more precise their station wagon hits the animal. After a few moments of deliberation the family decides to take the big guy back home.So they hoist him on top of the wagon, and that is when the fun begins. You see Harry, the creature’s name, is no ordinary Bigfoot, he is a vegetarian, he snores, and he even cries — a perfect Christmas gift for the kids.Harry wreaks havoc on the family’s home, and ends up turning the city upside down.It seems no one realizes that Harry is a benevolant Bigfoot.Harry does have one beef though, he hates to see his follow animals slaughtered by hunters. So Mr.Henderson’s (played by John Lithgow) hunting trophies have to go.Harry gives the poor creatures a proper burial in the backyard. While this is intended to be a fun movie for the kiddies, it also has a social message to it, but do not expect a brilliant statement. This comes in two forms : hunting for pleasure is wrong, and perhaps a deeper one about man’s exploitation of animals.Lithgow decides there is a for- tune to be made off Bigfoot. He starts teaching him tricks, but that quickly ends when Harry ends up going through the floor. The movie has some funny sequences in it, and there are two good suspense moments juxtaposed to make most people in the house scream at least once. The begining and end are particularly well done, and there are some good camera techniques. The best way to describe this film is as a ‘Walt Disney’ type. There is a cute, loveable animal, a thrill or two, a few chuckles, and a loose moral somewhere in between all of that.It is corny, there is no doubt about that, but at the same time it kind of reminds you of the movies you use to see as a kid.The kids, and kids at heart, will enjoy this film.John Lithgow isn’t quite sure what he should do with Harry, and the police are nolt much help. 10—TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 1987 Travel #1___ttei icecom World’s smallest city fits on football field By Christopher Andreae The Christian Science Monitor THE HAGUE — “The brochure bids you “Welcome to the Smallest Town in the World.” ' Madurodam" - also described as “Holland in a nutshell” - is in the seaside resort of Scheveningen on the outskirts of The Hague. It is a Dutch city entirely in miniature, filled with buildings of all kinds and periods, from the Middle Ages to the present. With a scale of 1:25, these small buildings make even six-year-olds look like giants. But people of all ages wander around this “city” in a state of childlike wonder, staring and pointing and lost in thought. No effort has been spared to achieve incredible accuracy in miniaturizing anything from Gothic cathedrals to windmills, from royal residences to railroad stations, and from oil refineries to rows of 17th-century Dutch houses sporting characteristic gables and beautiful brickwork, all squashed together along canals highly reminiscent of that other great Dutch city, Amsterdam. This city-in-little is a history, geography, and architecture lesson all rolled into one - but it wears its didacticism quite lightly.Above all, it is a tourist attraction boasting over 33 million visitors since it opened in 1952.If it is the “smallest city" in the world, Madurodam (so called after George Maduro of Willemstad, Cu-racaco, a young hero of World War II whose parents provided the original capital for the project) is also surely the largest small city in the world. It is set out in an area the size of a football field. If you follow its carefully organized routing -and you won’t want to miss any of the 130 points of interest numbered and described in the essential guidebook - you actually walk about two miles. In the company of a crowd of Dutch weekenders, we studied its meticulously detailed sights inch by inch and were amazed at its ambitiousness. One of the first buildings encountered is a replica of an elaborate cathedral, Sint Jan Basiliek s-' Hertogenbosch - the most important medieval church in the Netherlands. It is “on the same plan,” we are informed, “as the cathedral of Amiens in France, but with five instead of three aisles.” The guidebook (which swings amiably between mock-solemn “Madurodam history” and factual descriptions of the real buildings of which the models are replicas) observes that the St.Jan was built between 1330 and 1550 - taking over 200 years to complete. The miniature copy of it at Madurodam, almost as amazingly, took five years. It, like all the other buildings here, is constructed in wood colored and protected against the weather by paint. Each building is repainted every five years.Since every slate, stone, and brick appears to be present and correct, it is very hard to believe that Madu-rodam’s architecture is made of nothing but wood.Amazed visitors on every hand look delightedly at the Royal Golden Coach and procession of tiny figures outside the “Binnenhof” (the old administrative center of the Netherlands in the Hague), or peer down at the shoppers milling about under the brightly colored canopies in the “B.Boon-vander Starp Square” (named after the initiator and founder of Madurodam), or discover the “genuine” Dutch street organ and the old-fashioned scissors-grinder at work in front of a row of houses with shop windows displaying minuscule goods.(The organ gives you a tune for a small payment, which, like rest of the $250,000 yearly profit from the city, goes to charity.) Or visitors watch the trains that wind continually throughout Madurodam at alarming speed, only stopping for signals and at stations; and the planes that taxi magnificently on the tarmac at Schi-phol-Madurodam Airport; and the boats and ships moving majestically about the great port. Then there is the motorway, with its continuous line of traffic; the Royal Dutch Automobile Club Skidding School (watched inevitably by a row of fascinated youngsters intent on learning the skill of getting safely out of a skid even before they have learned to drive). There is a football (soccer) match under way at the Madurodam Sports Park. And sunbathers lie around on the silver-gold beaches at the Watersports Centre, while other leisure enthusiasts go waterskiing or windsurfing in the blue water nearby. It is a city full of life and incident, all to scale.Even the endlessly pruned trees are in keeping, and the bulbs and annual flowers are chosen for their smallness. After dark the entire place lights up with some 50,000 little lights - a sight we unfortunately missed, but plan to see next time.It is reportedly spectacular. This year Madurodam is presenting for the second time nightly hour-long sound-and-light shows. They are to start half an hour after the usual closing times.Audiences of 450 people, each equipped with headphones and a commentary in his or her own language, sit on the “dike” that surrounds the city and listen to stories about many of the buildings. This will start May 1 and continue through the end of September. There are also some special exhibitions this year - one about board games, another about scale models, and a display of Argentine crafts.I I m i j r 111 if I'm f;-.to} i —* i %» Buildings of all kinds line this, the world's smallest city in The Hague.~ *iL 4 4.: m FLORIDA 2*1 ^ ' Ft.Lauderdale Direct Flights Dorval to Ft.Lauderdale.Saturday and Sunday departures.PLUS One Week Complimentary Car Rental 2 door Chevette (or similar) with air-conditioning, automatic shift and unlimited mileage.SkVt Holiday Packages INCLUDING CAR all departures until June 19.1987 inclusive.MIAMI Chateau by the Sea 1 week 389 2 weeks $ Standard room from from FT.LAUDERDALE Sheraton Yankee Trader 1 week s439 2 weeks $ Standard room from from Sheraton Yankee Clipper 1 week from s469 2 weeks $ from 559 649 699 Prices include : Roundtrip airfare * standard accommodation * car rental. Some accommodation may be sold out on certain dates. All travel must be completed by June 26th, 1987.Departure from Montreal.Tre'cLsiiireTtours- ?Vacances CP Air Carrefour de l’Estrie 821-4204 PROTECT YOUR VACATION WITH VOYAGEUR TRAVEL INSURANCE - WE RECOMMEND ITI Prices and dales shown are those available at advertising deadlines and are subject to being sold out or change and to a surcharge by the operator without notice.Prices may vary depending upon date ol travel, accommodation selected and are per person based on double occupancy unless otherwise slated Terms and conditions applicable to these ollerings are those detailed in the suppliers brochure(s).Prices shown do not include airport, hotel taxes and/or service charges, or any item ot a personal nature unless specilied. This otter may not be valid in conjunction with any other discount or incentive ottered by either Sears Travel or its supplier(s) © Copyright Canada, 1985 Sears Canada Inc Any reproduction without the written consent of Sears Canada Inc.is prohibited Quebec permit holder your money’s worth.and more ¦ TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 1987—11 UNIQUE IN SHERBROOKE OPEN 24 HOUR DELIVERY SERVICE Reôtawiant • ‘Brochettes” • Pizza • Spare ribs • Pastas • Chicken • Steak Dining room • Fully licenced • Draft beer 53 Wellington St.South, Sherbrooke 569- rHfiSr STEAK LOVERS!
