has airplane marriage problems NASHVILLE, Tenn.(AP) — Sometimes country music star Ricky Skaggs has to fly halfway across the United States to be with his wife.Skaggs and his wife, Sharon White, have separate music careers.She, her sister, Cheryl, and their father, Buck, are The Whites, a country music trio known for their lilting harmony.Skaggs and White are separated nearly every weekend.In the summer, the separations can be two or three weeks at a time.“Thank God for M a Bell, ’ ’ the 33-year-old Skaggs said in an interview.“It’s not uncommon for us to talk two hours on the phone.” On Memorial Day, Skaggs decided the telephone was not intimate enough.He jumped on an airplane in Nashville and flew unannounced to Huntington, W.Va., to be with his 33-year-old wife at one of her performances.Their separate careers, however, recently united when they released a duet.Love Can't Ever Get Better Than This.The song was in the Top 10 of the country music charts in mid-July.STAYS SOLID “People expected this for a long time,” said Skaggs, whose solo hits include Country Boy, Heartbroke, Uncle Pen and Cajun Moon.“We waited until it felt right and we found the right song,” he said.“This was the ideal song and obviously the people thought so, too.” Because they have independent and successful careers, more work together is unlikely.So this means additional time apart.Skaggs is often asked how he and White manage to keep their marriage together.“We make it work,” he said.“This business will eat you up,” White said.When traveling separately, they keep a list of each other’s hotel reservations, the concert venue and even the phone number of the concert promoter.They talk by phone almost every day.They’ve hired an older couple to take care of Molly when they are out of town.“They’re like a member of the family,” Skaggs said.“They are like another set of grandparents for her.She’s really close to them, but she knows who her real grandparents are.” SPENDS HOURS Even during their time together, their careers are usually the main topic of conversation.“When we go to eat, we end up talking about music the whole time,” White said.“It’s just us.We have music in common,” said Skaggs who received the prestigious entertainer of the year award in 1985 by the Country Music Association.A year ago, 7-year-old Andrew Skaggs, Skaggs’ son by a previous marriage, was shot while riding in his mother’s car on Interstate 81 near Trout ville, Va.A truck driver, sentenced to 40 years in the case, said he was in a daze from drugs and lack of sleep.Andrew has required extensive medical treatment for the .38-caliber bullet that penetrated his upper lip and lodged in his neck.“He’s recovering and he’s doing well in a lot of ways,” his father said.“He forgave the man the Ontario Liquor Control Board once threatened to revoke the licence of any club that booked them.But the feisty Cape Breton natives, who believe there is no room for censorship in art, fought back.They challenged the liquor board in court, winning an injunction and a $25,000 settlement.“But that took us five years and cost us $50,000,” explained Blair.“So we had to go out and keep committing the crime to pay for the lawyers.” As well as being a first-rate comedian, Blair is also a “painter” who specializes in what he calls “grain art.” MacLean, his wife Anne MacLean, and Bob Boyson, a longtime friend and commercial artist, spend hundreds of hours gluing thousands of grain seeds on to boards, plexiglass and plywood.“Basically, we take the seeds and arrange them from white to black, and that becomes our palette,” said MacLean.The seeds are then glued down, with careful attention being paid to the textures.TEDIOUS TASK MacLean acknowledges that the work is tedious.He figures that it takes 100,000 seeds and 600 hours of work to produce paintings which sell for up to $8,000.“It’s done one seed at a time with your ordinary Bondfast glue,” he explained without a trace of humor.There are peculiar hazards to the technique.Twice, mice ate off the face of one figure when one of the works was at the framing shop.“They only ate the best grain.Once was funny, but twice was too much.We told the framer to get rid of the mice or we would take our business elsewhere.” Another time, some of the seeds that had already been glued, began to sprout.How did a foul-mouthed guy from Glace Bay end up doing seed paintings of Prairie scenes and paintings by 19th century French masters?MacLean says he liked drawing as a child and learned more by hanging around a commercial artist on a Canadian Forces base.It was only four years ago, however, as he was recovering from a major heart operation, that MacLean began the grain paintings.At the time, the Canadian Wheat Board commissioned Boy-son to come up with an appropriate gift to thank the Soviet Union for buying an extra large shipment of wheat.MacLean was called in to collaborate, and their art form was bom.That first painting now hangs in the Soviet agriculture ministry in Moscow, MacLean said proudly.MacLean takes the art form seriously.“Laughs are ephemeral.They don’t last long, sort of like drugs.This is permanent.It is our chance to leave our permanent mark.” Collins involved in ugly divorce LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dynasty star Joan Collins testified Tuesday that she resisted marrying former Swedish rock musician Peter Holm until he agreed after 18 months of bickering to sign a prenuptial agreement.“I’ve never met a man yet who was able to take care of me,” said Collins, 54, in explaining why she wanted the agreement before marrying Holm, 40.Despite assurances by Holm that he would remain in love with her forever, the actress said, “I have seen in the past that men have a tendency to change.” Collins, who entered a downtown courtroom flanked by four bodyguards, took the witness stand in the first day of testimony in the divorce trial to end her 13-month marriage to Holm.The actress darted through the courthouse hallway under a blaze of television lights and the flash of cameras, followed by her lawyer, Marvin Mitchelson.Because she and Holm were allowed into the courtroom before reporters, none witnessed the court-ordered search for weapons that both parties underwent before proceedings began.Holms and Collins are involved in a bitter divorce in which Holm is seeking $80,000 US a month to sustain what he called his accustomed style of life, pending final settlement.The divorce trial, expected to last three days, will decide the validity of the pre-nuptial agreement.PACT BINDING?Holm’s lawyer, Frank Steins-chriber, maintains the document was simply an informal one, compensating Holm while the couple was married.Mitchelson insists it is a binding pre-nuptial agreement limiting any claims by Holm.In his opening remarks, Mitchelson portrayed Holm as a penniless failed entrepreneur who was well paid before and during the couple’s 13-month marriage.“He got $1.3 million in cold, hard cash and $700,000 in expenses,” Mitchelson said.“He took the benefits of the agreement.This is what he bargained for.” But Steinschriber said the one-page agreement was only a “continuance of this informal relationship.” “It had nothing to do with community property,” Holm’s lawyer said.The actress said Holm initially wanted 50 per cent of her gross income from the Dynasty show and her Gemini Star Productions.But Collins thought 10 per cent to 15 per cent was adequate.“He thought it was unfair,” she said.“Since I was making $3 million to $5 million a year, I thought 10
