Photo by Perry Beaton « 2—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1987 For politicians near and far: Useful New Year’s resolutions Hints on how to keep bubbly easy on pocket It never ceases to amaze me just how fast time seems to pass now that I’ve reached what is euphemistically called my “golden years”.As a child growing up in war-shadowed Europe, the days, months and years seemed endless.Time was my ally. The future would look after itself. Now, there seems to be so many things left to do and so little time in which to do them.I suppose it’s not much different for Rocket Ronnie.Heaven knows he’s even older than me.Or Mikhail Gorbachev; a man out to change the face of the world’s most bureaucratic nation.Just for them, and the other ‘leaders’ of our world then, I offer these suggestions for New Year’s resolutions.SHUT UP NANCY: For Ron and Mikhail a vow that they will leave their wives at home next time they have a summit. After all, who cares if Nancy and Raisa get along?Heck, Nancy doesn’t get along with anyone including the President’s cabinet, her stepchildren, or any member of the media who asks Ronnie a question using words of more than two syllables. For John Turner a promise that he will at least once during 1988 say what he means and not what he thinks will gain him votes. This could include openly supporting free trade, laughing at the way Ed Broadbent’s dresses, or inviting Michael Wilson to lunch to congratulate him on his tax reform.Who’s who By TADEUSZ LETARTE Jean-Paul Moustache?’mmÊt federal politics west of the Lake-head since 1957.UNBLOCK BELVEDERE Locally, it would be nice if Jean—Paul Moustache, mayor of all the Shebrookecois, could promise to co-ordinate road repair in 1988 so that Galt, Wellington, King, Grandes Fourches and Portland Streets aren’t all closed at once. This way at 4:30 p.m.there wouldn’t be 100,000 cars all trying to use Belvedere.UNBLOCK QUEEN Speaking of traffic, maybe the city fathers of Lennoxville would like to make a resolution to change the traffic lights at College and Queen Streets so that pedestrians don’t have five minutes for every two minutes of automobile movement.I know this is asking a lot, but after all they did get lights put in at the railroad crossing on Depot Street and that only took 140 years.NO MORE HACKS While we’re at it, couldn’t Brian Buloney promise to get through all of 1988 without appointing another party hack to a major government post?On second thought, this is probably an unrealistic request since it would include any former Conservative member of parliament, and living member of the Senate, anybody living in Manicoua-gan, Sinclair Steven’s wife, any graduate of St.Francis Xavier University, any member of the law firm of Heenan Blaikie, and probably anyone who has been active in R.I.P.PIERRE MARC For Pierre Marc Johnson a resolution that he enjoy his new career, whatever it may be doctor, lawyer, tinker, spy — after all he failed as Indian chief—and he’s never had a real job. Finally, a vow from the membership of the Parti Québécois that they will give Fat Jack Parizeau all the support, dedication and backing that they gave Pierre-Marc Johnson when he held the reins of power.Just like Diefenbaker supported Stanfield, and Mulroney supported Clark.Only three-and-a-half feet tall: Tiny actor fights for dignity, humor MONTREAL (CP) — Actor Michael J.Anderson, who has a key part in the latest children’s film by Quebec producer Rock Demers, would rather be laughed at than be ignored.“It’s no big deal if kids want to laugh at me,” he says, ‘“but what alarms me is when their parents tell the kids not to talk to me.“It’s suggesting to them that they should fear me, and that’s s^ary.” Only three-and-a-half feet tall, Anderson has spent most of his 34 years confined to a wheelchair because of a rare bone disorder. He finds it frightening that people with lesser handicaps than his own simply give up.“Growing up in a wheelchair, I had absolutely no reason to suspect that I would ever have a good time in life. But it didn’t stop me from dreaming.“If you believe in something strongly enough, you can slowly but surely attain your goal,” he says.Anderson is an unlikely candidate for movie stardom, but he’s trying nevertheless, starting with parts he can fill.In Demers’s film, called The Great Land of Small, directed by Vojta Jasny, he plays Fritz, a friendly gnome visible only to those who believe in such things.PLAYING A MYTH When Jasny tested Anderson for the part, he told him, “You’ll be called upon to play a mythical being from an enchanted world on the other side of the rainbow.“It will certainly require some suspension of traditional beliefs on your part.” Anderson replied that he appreciated Jasny’s concern.“But, frankly, your film is no more of a fantasy than my reality.” Before becoming an actor, Anderson worked in his hometown of Denver for four years as a computer technician on the ground support system for the NASA space shuttle.“I had taken this computer aptitude test, and I was told I had a future as an engineering draftsman or as an electronics technician, which I equated to fixing tinker toys,” he recalls.“And since I happened to like tinker toys, I took courses in becoming an electronics technician.” On completing the courses, he chose “the most glamorous, not the most lucrative” of many offers and took the job with NASA.“Actually, it sounded more gla- morous than it was.Mostly it entailed sitting on a factory bench for four years and was at times about as thrilling as selling light bulbs over the phone, which I also did for a spell.” As things turned out, a Ne w York film-maker heard about him and put together a 30-minute documentary on his life.It won the grand prize in an American Film Institute competition and left Anderson yearning for the bright lights. On impulse, he quit the job in Denver and moved to New York.“I had fantastic luck.No sooner did I arrive, I got jobs to appear in Yoko Ono’s first rock video and an Andy Warhol short.” Anderson has since appeared in rock videos by Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger and was centre stage himself in a cabaret revue in which he mimicked the music of everyone from Cat Stevens to Willie Nelson.“The thing I had to be careful about in New York was preserving my dignity,” he says.“I would get all sorts of bizarre offers there — from appearing in porno movies to carnival side shows.” He believes that the best way to deal with his height, when talking to others, is to poke fun at it.Happy New Year! Just a few cork-popping hints for the coming festivités and some possible alternatives to keep the celebration light-hearted, bubbly and easy on the post Christmas pocket-book.If you find Champagne tasty but a trifle expensive, be of good cheer.France does produce a variety of perfectly acceptable sparkling wines from other regions. Some of these are actually made by the same painstaking ‘méthode champenoise’ with its secondary bottle fermentation.Others are made from the cuvée close or Charmant method which involves the use of airtight vats and produces sound, if not exciting, bubbly. The region of Anjou located along the Loire River valley has long been a maker of sparkling wines.Until the recent escalation in Champagne prices, however, it was virtually ignored by North Americans.A good example — under $10 — is the Remy-Pannier sparkling white. From the region of Burgundy comes Kriter.A non appellation wine, it is nevertheless consistent, dry, smooth and bubbly. It is also under $10.The Spanish are also major producers and consumers of sparkling wine.Probably the most familiar are those produced under the Codor-nui label. There is also Frexit. Both are made by the méthode champenoise and both have a distinctive Spanish taste to them that many sparkling wine enthusiasts find quite acceptable. The firm of René Barbier also produces an inexpensive bubbly that is, if not on the same quality level as the previous two, at least a little cheaper.Probably the biggest consumer of sparkling wine in the world is Italy and although Italians buy much of their bubbly from France they als produce many of their own.The most famous of these is Asti Spumante.Made from the moscato grape, Asti Spumante is invariably semi—sweet to sweet and is, in my opinion, better used as a dessert wine than an aperitif. Finally, and closer to home, Canada’s own Podamer is a delicious, dry sparkling wine although unfortunately available only in Ontario.Along with Podamer, we have Bright’s resident — the least expensive of those mentioned — and, despite our native inferiority complex, a perfectly acceptable sparkling wine for the price. The President is also available here in Quebec.A third North American sparkling wine available is the Chandon Brut from California. At around $17 a bottle it is expensive but still much cheaper than genuine Champagne. It is also every bit as good as standard non-vintage Champagne which is not surprising since it is produced by a partnership which includes the Moët Chandon company of France. No matter what your choice, and there are many others, a word of caution.Don’t pop the cork like a shotgun.Letting the stopper bounce off the ceiling or one of your guest’s heads is impressive but does nothing for the wine.As a matter of fact you will probably find it foaming over and at today’s prices that kind of waste is sinful. After removing the tinfoil cover and the wire retaining device, take the cork in one hand and gently turn the bottle with the other. As the bottle turns, slowly draw upward on the cork until it leaves the bottle with a gentle hiss of escaping gas. This way you don’t lose any wine nor waste any bubbles. After all that’s what you’ve paying for.Cheers! TOWNSHIPS WEEK-THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1987—3 Dedicated philatelic researchers commit life to stamps I’m trying to decide what it is I enjoy more in connection with stamp collecting.Researching, or writing about what I have researched.I know that I do enjoy reading what other philatelic writers research. It has never ceased to amaze me how some philatelic writers are able to read a page from a stamp text book and produce an article that is so full of interesting information, that the text book becomes secondary. There are several writers that come to mind when speaking of interesting articles.Ernest Kehr — who died last year — was extremely opionated. He didn’t pull any punches in letting you know what was good and what was no good. His knowledge of stamps was second to none.He dedicated his life to philately and philatelic writing. No one has come forward to take his place as yet.Closer to home, we have Larry Mclnnis of the Gazette. If there is someone in the stamp world not behaving as he should, Larry will tell you about it.His research into different stamps, people involved in stamps and philaelic events are thorough. His stories are light, easy to follow with a nice touch of humor.Much may be learned by reading his articles on a regular basis.Outside of winning several awards for his articles, Larry is also syndicated to more than two hundred newspapers across Canada. There are many others columnists that are worthwhile reading, Ian Robertson, Ken Rose, the tagging expert, John M.Hotchner of the New York Times and many other publications, and Bill Jory of the London Free Press. All of these people write very interesting stamp articles. However, the title of patriarch of philatelic writers, in my opinion, goes to Herman Herst Jr.Degrassi Junior High Finally, a show that By Bill Anderson The Canadian Press Degrassi Junior High is fast becoming the darling of Canadian TV, having that rare ability to attract large audiences and yet still meet the demands of TV critics and cultural nationalists. The frank, liberal-minded drama series about young adolescents begins 13 new episodes Monday on CBC.The Degrassi story got rolling in 1984 with The Kids of Degrassi Street, a critically praised Sunday afternoon TV series about a fictional public school. As the young actors and the Toronto production company grew older, a new series was created, set in a junior high school where the more sensitive and engrossing issues of adolescence could be dealt with.Last season, Degrassi Junior High replaced its predecessor on Sunday afternoons on CBC, and it quickly drew acclaim and won such key awards as an international Emmy for children’s programming.MOVED TO MONDAY This season — prodded by a budget squeeze that left little room to produce new programming — CBC decided to promote Degrassi Junior High to Monday nights at 7:30 p.m., just before peak viewing hours begin at 8 o’clock. Then the real master stroke was made by Ivan Fecan, who had taken over as CBC programming chief in August after a stint with NBC in Los Angeles.Fecan moved Degrassi to 8:30 p.m., where it would be “ham-mocked” between Kate and Allie and Newhart, two popular U.S.series.With its compassionate, humanist, feminist sensibilities, Degrassi was a splendid match with the female-oriented Kate and Allie, and ratings for Degrassi were impressive — averaging about one million viewers even in repeats.SHOWN ON PBS Meanwhile, PBS began carrying the series on weekends this fall, and American critics seeing it for the first time added to the momentum. The Miami Herald, for example, called it “rare, good children’s television” and New York’s Village Voice said it was “ an a mbi-tious weekly show that transcends the pitfalls of the genre.” Indeed, the series is perfectly suited to the standards' of TV critics on both sides of the border: it’s innovative, entertaining, morally sound and doesn’t condescend to the viewer. The series has also managed to develop a reputation for openness without becoming embroiled in serious controversy — a balancing act done under the liberal ethic of “providing information.” In a storyline involving a pregnant teenager, for example, abortion was presented only as a possible way of dealing with the situation. As the new group of episodes begins, the teenager has rejected an abortion but is still unsure whether to keep the infant or give it up for adoption.OFFER OPTIONS “We feel our mandate is to present as many options as possible to our viewers,” says executive producer Linda Schuyler.“It’s up to our audience to decide what they would do in that situation.” The producers of the show, in other words, do not have a death wish. They know that a teenager on a prime-time TV series — especially one on publicly funded networks — could not have an abortion without sparking an off-screen uproar. To present the option of abortion is enough — and as far as television Stamp corner By Peter McCarthy WRITTEN BOOKS There’s no one around today who can tell a story quite like Herman Herst.Being a dealer for a number of years, Herst actually handled many of the history making items that he writes about.A columnist since 1933, Herst has travelled the world buying and selling stamps, or attending philatelic exhibitions.Herman Herst Jr.has written twelve philatelic books and is a stamp correspondent to magazines and periodicals in five countries around the world. It wasn’t be dealing with the rich that Herst aquired his knowledge, but rather, by associating himself with known postal historians, the average collector and, children. His stories are filled with humanism. He was a way of making the reader feel as though he were a part of the story. The best way to get to know Herman Herst Jr.is to read what he writes.Look for Pat ’s Paragraphs.FORENSIC PHILATELY There was a time when Herst would answer every letter received. However, due to failing health, he has asked people to refrain from writing in order to allow him to put out as much as he can before his health forces him to stop.Herst’s latest book entitled “Forensic Philately” deals with one of the most famous philatelic trails in history almost a century ago in London’s Old Bailey. The book is priced at $11 U.S.and is available from the Book Depot, Suite 157,153 East Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33432 U.S.A.Reading what these people have to write about can only improve your stamp collecting.I should be careful about the advise I give you or, this column could become a thing of the past.* * * Well, the post office has wished us a Happy New Year in advance. As of January 1, the postage rate goes by one cent.It seems to be like this could be a yearly event.Just when 1 was telling all you good people what the various clubs were doing for October, stamp collecting month, the post office decided to change stamp collecting month from October to February. One of these days we’U be told what is going on, maybe.Your letters are appreciated and may be sent to P.O.Box 688, Richmond, Que., JOB 2H0.satisfies critics and nationalists usually goes. This is understandable, but Degrassi also has a tendency to shy away from the unpleasant details of the issues it raises. On the cultural front, Degrassi has also cut a clever path and managed to escape the kind of sniping endured by other high-rated Canadian shows done with U.S.production partners.CTV’s Night Heat, for example, is often criticized for being a violent, fast-paced clone of American cop shows, and for deliberately omitting Toronto landmarks that would identify the show as being filmed in Canada. But since the show is slow-paced, intelligent and more than just simple escapist entertainment, it is thought to represent the kind of television Canadians do best. And for this reason, its shortcomings are usually overlooked or forgiven.Canada’s own grand old man of poetry publishes new anthology By Richard Abbott MONTREAL (CP) — Call him a sage or a seer, humanist or prophet, but above all call him a poet — a Canadian poet. Some have called Irving Layton other things, like naughty or mischievous or a dirty old man — of letters, of course. But that was when he was younger. Now, at 75, Layton is considered the grand old man of Canadian poetry and spends much of his time reading his works to audiences all over North America. But writing poetry, he admits, is no way to make a living. So Layton supported himself by teaching — first high school, then at universities in Montreal.Nonetheless, he says poets are essential to Canada’s spiritual well-being, and he wouldn’t be anything else.JEWISH AND JEWS Layton’s new anthology, Fortunate Exile, is a selection of poems written over the last 42 years on the theme of being Jewish and what happened to the Jews in the Second World War.Or to use his description: “It’s a book that is a many-faceted probing of the problem of the disease called anti-Semitism.“1 had no reason to believe when I started writing poetry that this theme would assume the significance or the importance that it has.“But with the revelations of the terrible brutalities, the terrible atrocities, the deaths of over six million men, women and children, one would have to be peculiarly insensitive not to be troubled.” There is anger in the poems, he says, but not hate.PITY, SADNESS “There is also tremendous pity and profound sadness for the human race, for the atrocious things that human beings have done,” says Layton.“How was it that in Christianized Europe this abomination — to give it its right name — could happen?“It’s not a matter simply of apportioning blame. It’s a matter of trying to understand why, so that we don’t do these horrible things to one another (again).” The poems in Fortunate Exile focus not only on the persecution of Jews “but on what it means to be a human being.” Not enough attention, Layton feels, has been paid by Christianity to what happened during the Holocaust. The churches have not called on the guilty to repent and have tried to hush up what was done to the Jews.NOT FOR HIM Though he is sharply critical of Christianity, some of his lines seem to show a degree of respect for it.Might he have thought once of becoming a Christian?“I can’t say I have.I’ve always accepted Jesus as a great Hebrew prophet, along with Amos and Mi-cah and Isaiah and Jeremiah.“There’s no reason why any Jew should convert to Christianity. Why should I take on the burden of what Christianity has done to the Jews?“At the same time,” he adds, “Christian ethics are Jewish ethics. There’s nothing in Christianity that the Jews hadn’t been saying for hundreds of years before Jesus came along.“My complaint is that the Christians aren’t living up to their Jewish ethics.” Fortunate Exile, by Irving Lay-ton.Published by McClelland and Stewart; 168 pages; $19.95.Tender So Juicy Steak.La Place du Steak 4—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1987 Lucy Doheny still Lennoxville’s first lady of pottery Chess pieces.RECORD/PHRRY BEATON By Gracie MacDonald LENNOXVILLE — Lucy Doheny still gets those pre-show jitters.“Everytime I get this feeling and think ‘they’re going to hate it,’” she laughs, safe now in the studio she calls her refuge. The nervousness about friends and neighbors judging her work isn’t surprising.Lennoxville’s self-effacing potter-in-residence isn’t the prima donna type. The critical eyes belong to the same people who watched Doheny turn from dabbling in pottery six years ago to running her own little cottage industry in 1988.It is these people who keep Doheny on her toes.“They know my work.they’ve seen it all.Every year (for summer exhibits) I try to make something different, to add something.” RECORD/PERRY BEATON Right to left: a cranberry blossom casserole dish and an iris pattern coffee mug.She can hardly keep up with the demand.“They keep selling out and / keep getting these calls to send more pots down.” Doheny has nothing to worry about. What was once a one-woman show has become a mini business.People certainly don’t ‘hate it’, and her china-like clay dishes, lamp bases and chess sets have proven more than just a fad.It now takes two extra people to get everything boxed and off to its destination, often via the jam-packed backseat of a Hyundai Pony.“An engineering feat of genius,” says Doheny.Much of the reason for this up- Rl A relatively empty studio—Most of Doheny’s workis off at McRatts’s bookstore on Queen St.RECORD/PERRY BEATON Doheny shelves at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto. Now half of her work goes to the museum, and at higher prices than at home.A $10 mug now on sale at McRatt’s costs $15 in the city.Doheny says she can hardly keep up with the demand.“They keep selling out and I keep getting these calls to send more pots down.” There are limits, however.“I’m selling to a functional market but I still do what I want to do.I don’t want to sit down and make 7,000 mugs.” “I expected her to take about 12.They took them all and asked me when 1 could bring them more.” The deal with the Gardiner came almost by accident.I was in Toronto to see an analyst about my glazes, and all I had “For a long time popular pottery was heavy and brown and not nice to the touch.you should want to kiss it.” with me was a broken pot and my portfolio. They said to come back with a cross section of what you do.Three weeks later I came back with 78 pots.I expected her to take about 12.They took them all and asked me when I cluttered room that was once the living room of her family’s rambling house. Her mother still turns the kilns on early in the morning. The three dogs still play in the pots waiting glaze on the coolers and assorted other pieces. She gets a kick out of out-of-town guests admiring her work.“I’ve always grown up with old porcelain.I think you could have a set of Crown Derby on the table, and put a piece of mine on the table and it wouldn’t offend.” Although her work goes through ‘periods’ of sorts — the dragon, the gold on brown and the latest fish pattern — the style stays the same. Her two most popular lines, the iris “I’m selling to a functional market but I still do what I want to do.I don’t want to sit down and make 7,000 mugs.” and cranberry blossom patterns on white glaze — are light in style, shape and color.“For a long time popular pottery was heavy and brown and not nice to the touch.Dean (Mullavey, a potter and teacher who first gave her the clay bug) always said you should want to kiss it.” Doheny isn’t quite sure why she does what she does.“But I’ve always grown up with old porcelain.I think you could have a set of Crown Derby on the table, and put a piece of mine on the table and it wouldn’t offend.Maybe we should call it Crown Lennoxville,” she kids. She says the essence of her pottery is simple: “Don’t treat it like china. It should be used.Beauty without purpose is futile.” Doheny’s work can be bought at the Essaim drugstore or McRatts, both on Queen St, in Lennoxville.Doheny is fascinated by dragons.fis» * tpt- \ ’ 'The public doesn’t get a chance to know what’s going on’ Buffy Sainte-Marie learning to bridge the differences By Sean Condon Niagara Falls Review NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont.(CP) — Buffy Sainte-Marie is learning to raise her own consciousness. After 25 years of performing, the Cree songwriter and poet still deals with issues affecting North American native people.Since retiring from the recording studio 11 years ago, Sainte-Marie’s focus has shifted.“Right now, I’m really interested in the problem of polarity in the world,” said Sainte-Marie, 47.“People are so polarized — them and us, rich and poor — as though nobody’s talking to each other.” The Saskatchewan native brims with the optimism that filled such 1960s hits as Indian Cowboy in a Rodeo, Now That the Buffalo’s Gone and Universal Soldier — a Sainte-Marie composition British folkie Donovan rode up the charts.Taking a more universal approach has shifted Sainte-Marie's perspective on native issues, including oil drilling near native settlements.SEES HUMANITY “At one time, I would have just thought people at the head of oil companies were just inhuman,’’ she explained.“But now I’ve thought it over, I know they are not.“I’ve become more interested than I was before in just closing the gap between those polarities,” said Sainte-Marie, who recently played a show at the Niagara Region Native Centre with her husband JackNitzche, a record producer and composer. While Sainte-Marie has an optimistic outlook, Nitzsche is the pessimistic side of the family, now living in Hawaii.“I don’t think anything matters,” grumbled Nitzsche, half-asleep from travel-weariness.“You never could change anything with music.” “Things aren’t as bad as he says,” said Sainte-Marie, laughing.“There’s always hope — except for the record business.” Known for producing albums by Neil Young and Graham Parker, Nitzsche has turned to film soundtracks. He composed the instrumental track — “there was only about 12 minutes of it,” he joked — for the box-office hit Stand By Me.WRITES THEME As a team, the couple wrote Up Where We Belong, the main theme for An Officer and a Gentleman, which won an Academy Award in 1982.Nitzsche said there’s more money in sound-track work than in record producing, which he has dropped almost totally except for the occasional project with Young. But Nitzsche said he can’t afford to wait for the right films to drop in his lap.“I did that last year .I was waiting, but nothing came along.” Sainte-Marie also finds herself getting restless. She said it has “always hurt me” that the public hasn’t paid attention to the growing number of native Canadian politicians, lawyers, writers and artists “who are superb — much further ahead of the United States.” Her goal now, with a planned return to the studio, is to make people more informed and help bring them together.“I feel the general public doesn’t get a lot of chance to know what’s going on,” she said.“You see a lot of toothpaste commercials, but when it Wow, no contest! Long after the rumours subside about Michael Jackson (Robin Williams is right, did you ever see Michael and Janet together?), George’s album will be played and played and played. The reasons are all very evidently within the grooves of this obvious work of love by the shy Beatle and all of his cohorts.“Got My Mind Set On You”, George’s version of the song from early sixties R&B artist Rudy Clark, is gobbling up the charts and probably even now inspiring Paul McCartney to cook up his most ambitious album project in half a decade or so.But the other songs on Harrison’s album are equally exquisite. There’s “That’s What It Takes”, a moody, guitar rich song that has some tasty Harrison or Clapton licks on it, which should have the keen-eared trying to decide whether it’s Slowhand or George bending the strings, as they do on almost every cut here. One of the simplest but most moving of the songs on the record is the ballad “Just For Today ”, which has soft keyboards courtesy of George himself, or guest Elton, or perhaps even Gary Wright, who was aboard for the AH Things Must Pass sessions 17 years back. The background vocal fiUs on this track are layered with the kind of attention to detail that marked the middle period of George’s house band in the sixties, “Fish On The Sand”, or “This Is Love” aren’t exactly chopped liver on side one, the latter filled with the message of love and understanding that used to be George’s exclusive territory, but there are a lot of Beatlenostal-gics who will lift the needle or fast forward the cassette over to “When We Was Fab”, George’s loving touch that calls up so much of the Beatles’ heritage with fond feelings. With “Fab” and “Gear” resounding throughout the track, vying with the chillingly eerie cello riffs from Bobby Kok, George takes us back to the “I Am The Walrus” days of experimentation, and the sitar licks at the end of the song seem lifted from “Within You, Without You”, as the song evokes an era.“Devil’s Radio” is George’s answer to Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry”, with Harrison speaking out about the gossip mongers who use the devil’s radio to transmit their psychobabble.“The chorus is “gossip, gossip, oh yeah, gossip”, as George declaims against this “pollution of the highest degree” with the social satire of the “Piggies” ilk.“Someplace Else” is a medium-slow ballad, “Wreck of the Hesperus” turns up the rock ‘n’ roll button with some fine piano work and brass backing, and “Breath Away From Heaven” is an oriental-sounding, atmospheric ditty leading to the album’s rockin’ closer, “Got My Mind Set On You”.It’s fitting that the Beatles’ lead Postman” or “Devil In Her Heart”.If everyone who finds himself humming along with this one on the radio, thanks to its reverberating, rollicking chorus, picks up a copy of this album, watch Cloud Nine make a lot of people forget all about Thriller.VIDEO SCREENINGS EXTREME PREJUDICE (I.V.E.VIDEO) Nick Nolle plays the Gary Cooper/John Wayne role in this violent but mesmerizing film about drugs, corruption and law & order along the Texas-Mexico border.Nolte is rigid-jawed, usmiling Jack Ben-teen, a Texas Ranger who is incorruptible whose simple job of keeping the cocaine and heroin on the south side of Rio Grande is suddenly made very complicated.Complications come in the form of the knowledge that the main man running the coke into his territory is Cash Bailey, Jack’s boyhood bosom pal, who is also an ex-suitor of Jack’s Mexican-American lady friend. While the drug plot steams along everything is thrown into stark perspective by the arrival of a crack team of military types (all of whom have been presumed killed as a clever CIA coverup) who appear to be casing out the local bank in Nolte’s town for some kind of massive heist.Director Walter Hill obviously trained at the “Wild Bunch” academy of cinematic techniques, because his mastery of Peckinpah shock-action is evident.Nolte and his unsophisticated police force are oblivious to the fact that the CIA team of agents has learned that Cash Bailey ’s money from the drug traffic is being laundered at a number of local banks until a tractor-trailer load of hydrogen is exploded as a diversionary tactic. At this point the movie moves into high gear as the blood and bullets are expended at a mind-boggling rate.In fact, surely the Uzi machine gun company should have received credits at the end of the film the way the soft-drink and car companies are acknowledged. When Nolte goes into the Mexican den of Cash Bailey to bring the drug-runner back to justice he must also win back his senorita, who is torn between Bailey and Nolte. The CIA skullduggery in the background heats up and the movie finishes with a bold depiction of gore and mayhem which should keep viewers poised on the edges of their couches or chesterfields. The action is slick, some of the dialogue is witty (Rip Torn drawls that “the only thing worse than a politician is a child molester”), and Nolte plays his role as tight-lipped lawman to the very end in this violent but remarkable shoot-em-up.(VIDEO AVAILABLE AT LE CLUB VIDEO, QUEEN STREET, LEN-NOXVILLE ; AND AT TREIZIEME Loisir Chasse et Pèche l9î Québec Greed makes for great plots TOWNSHIPS WEEK-THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1987-7 Wall Street crash has artistic wheels turning again By Rick Gladstone NEW YORK (AP) — Sherman McCoy is a Park Avenue snob who makes a fortune selling bonds and calls himself a Master of the Universe.Gordon Gekko is a ruthless speculator who wrecks companies in takeover battles and profits on illegal insider stock-trading tips.Billy Corman is an obsessed British investor trying to enrich himself in London’s deregulated securities markets. They are fictional characters starring in the latest theme to grab the imagination of the entertainment world: greed and corruption in financial markets. The October stock market crash sharpened public hunger for financial news and created a demand for stories about the wheeling and dealing that preceded — some say caused — the collapse.“This is a fascinating period,” says Robert Kavesh, professor of finance and economics at the New York University graduate school of business.“We’ve come through the ascendancy of the yuppie. We’ve seen millions made just by changes in pieces of paper.” The vilification of business is not unprecedented in the arts, but business scholars say the latest variation on the theme of money for money’s sake reflects the widely reported ethical breakdown afflicting financial markets in the 1980s.ACCOMPANIES EXCESS Kavesh said the creative world’s latest fixation on business corruption was predictable, considering the critical literature and drama that accompanied the robber-baron era of the 19th century, the excesses of the 1920s and the Great Depression.“Making money the old-fashioned way, which is stealing it, has always intrigued people,” Ka- “We’ve come through the ascendancy of the yuppie. We’ve seen millions made just by changes in pieces of paper.” vesh said.Sherman McCoy is the key character in Bonfire of the Vanities, a sprawling novel by Tom Wolfe that portrays Wall Street as a dream- land of paper wealth in the midst of poverty, homelessness and racial tension.Wolfe writes of the i(sound of well-educated young white men baying for money in the bond market.” Pierce and Pierce is the fictional investment giant where McCoy is a star bond trader at age 38, pulling in nearly $1 million annually but spending most of it to finance his 14-room Park Avenue apartment, send his daughter to private school and placate his high-living mistress.Wolfe writes of the “sound of well-educated young white men baying for money in the bond market.” Gordon Gekko, a sleaze-oozing scoundrel portrayed by actor Michael Douglas, is the hate object of Oliver Stone’s new film.Wall Street, which borrows liberally from the Ivan Boesky insider trading scandal.ESSENCE OF GREED Wall Street professionals gave the film a mixed review, with some complaining that it was simplistic and would reinforce prejudices. Some non-Wall Street reviewers agreed, but others said the movie captures the essence of speculative greed.British playwright Caryl Churchill has contributed Serious Money, a hit in London earlier this year which won rave reviews when it opened at New York’s off-Broadway Public Theatre last month. It will move to Broadway in February. The script, with a cast of venal characters featuring a corporate marauder named Billy Corman, is written entirely in verse.“You look at most movies that have accountants in them, and usually the guy’s embezzling money or he’s a total geek.” Longtime adversaries of big business are delighted with the Wall Street-bashing, calling it the appropriate response to years of corporate excess inspired by Reagan administration tolerance.“I think it’s a good thing,” says J ay Power, a lobbyist for the AFL-CIO.“Despite the ongoing charges that labor unions are run by organized crime, the real fact is that the big crimes are those on Wall Street and elsewhere, in the most unprecedented proportion since the robber barons.” Power hopes for “a trend away from the whole Reagan attitude that anything in the name of capitalism is OK, and (to) restore some sense of social consciousness and responsibility.” Amid the generally negative image of corporate personalities in the media, there are efforts to portray at least some business people as ethically upstanding. The ABC television network plans an as-yet-unnamed pilot series next year in which a main character is a virtuous certified public accountant. You look at most movies that have accountants in them, and usually the guy ’s embezzling money or he’s a total geek,” says Jerry Walsh, a spokesman for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.“It’s really not accurate.” Cleese’s Fawlty logic: Laughter that wounds and heals By Robert Barr NEW YORK (AP) —John Cleese, the tallest and loudest of Britain’s now-disbanded Monty Python comedy troupe, likes his humor just a mite short of lethal.Sharp enough to wound, and speed the victims on their way to healing.“There is something gorgeous about real embarrassment,” says Cleese, who revels in the notion that Basil Fawlty, the bigoted, bullying innkeeper he played in the TV series Fawlty Towers, sometimes made viewers cringe. He treasures one episode in which Basil heaped insults on German guests, reminding them of the Hitler years and their defeat in the Second World War.“One man told me — he was in my therapy group; he was a senior lawyer who later became a judge — he became so embarrassed with that episode, watching on his own, that he left the room. Can you believe that?“And he stood in the corridor outside his own living room, and he was so tortured and so embarrassed, but he wanted so much to know what was going to happen, that he watched the rest of the episode from the door.” Cleese is laughing so hard he is barely able to wheeze out the last few words of the story.“Isn’t that wonderful?” DID NEW FILM Cleese has just finished A Fish Called Wanda, co-starring Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis in what Cleese proudly calls “a very nasty film.“I’ve always thought the best comedy was the most mean-spirited, which is why I think I always enjoyed W.C.Fields more than anyone else.” Because of the film, which will be released next summer, Cleese is shorn of the beard and mustache he grew for the 1980 BBC production of The Taming of the Shrew. He would have cut it earlier except for pressure from his wife, Barbara.“She’s American,” he explained.“You know what dominating creatures they are.” Cleese was in New York promoting his film company, Video Arts, which uses comedy to teach management skills.A lot of what he learned about bad management went into Fawlty Towers, and Prunella Scales (Sybil Fawlty), Andrew Sacks (Manuel) and Connie Booth (Polly and a former Mrs.Cleese) all have appeared in the Video Arts series.LAUGH AT ABUSES It’s almost a subversive notion, that the button-down set has something to learn from a man who has mercilessly ridiculed the nin- compoops, bullies, twits and bores who occupy the thrones of power.Authority, Cleese said, is only funny if it is abused. If he can make people laugh at ridiculous, pompous abuses of authority, he thinks he can shame bad managers into mending their ways.“The moment you get into solemnity you lose everything; you lose creativity, you lose perspective, but above all I think you become more stressful.” In psychotherapy, he said, the moment a patient begins to laugh at himself is the moment he begins to heal — “because you give them distance between their behavior and what is essentially themselves.“Without that gap, you can’t really start changing people’s behavior,” said Cleese.HUMOR DEFINED “The best definition of humor that I ever came across was (Henri) Bergson’s, who said that it is the social sanction against inflexible behavior.Inflexible behavior, I think, is just egotistical behavior.People who are always angry, are always sad, always envious, always competitive — the typical American — they’re inflexible.“I think humor is a kind of touchstone to recognize the excesses of egotism. That’s why you couldn’t do a comedy about Christ, because he would have been totally flexible. He would never have been stuck in an emotion.” The church, however, strikes Cleese as fair game. The best line he ever wrote, he said, was in a Python book for “Vice-pope Eric,” who was asked whether there was any conflict between Christ’s teaching and the Roman Catholic Church.“Vice-pope Eric said: ‘Look, when you’re propagating a creed of tolerance, poverty and humility, you need a very rich, powerful.authoritarian organization to do it.’” Despite reaching the advanced age of 46 and laboring in the corridors of capitalism, Cleese said he still tends to distrust authority.“I’m not sure that that isn’t slightly rational, because when you see the people who do get to the top, particularly in politics, they 're not people who impress you as human beings, are they?” He is emphatically not impressed by Britain’s woman-at-the-lop, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. His loathing for the prime minister goes way back, at least to the time when she was minister of education.Cleese recalled his appearance years ago on a BBC music program called Desert Island Discs, in which celebrities picked a few records they consider essential.Guests were also asked what special thing they would want to have along on their desert island.“They always said Shakespeare or a copy of the Bible.I said I would like to take a papier mache model of Margaret Thatcher and a baseball bat,” Cleese said, laughing wickedly.“I don’t think my attitude has changed a great deal.” Go for it! 8—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1987 WHAT’S ON New Year’s This being the end of the year and the weekend for good cheer here’s a round up of some of the New Year’s entertainment possibilities in the Townships. What follows is by no means a complete list, this week being long on work and short on time.Only those of the amibitious folks who called, wrote or stopped me on the street—yes, they recognized me from the photograph — get their two cents in this week. Here goes, in no particular order: Rob Bray and the Countrymen will be playing at the Domaine RSVP in Sawyerville.Upbeat as always, Rob promises a “rip roaring party.” The night is organized by the Veilleux family and there’ll be a hot and cold buffet with all the fixings.DJ’s Bar at Burrough’s Falls will have a band from Montreal called FM.If my memory serves me well, they play good dance tunes. The Maples in Stanstead, as for the last few weeks, will have Big Foot. The Bretagne Bar in Waterville will feature Tom McKel-vy’s Long Shot Country. The Lenn Pub in Lennoxville will have a dinner dance with a band called the Fixx.Tickets are $15 and I hear through the grapevine there may be a few left.Blue Fuse and some special guests will be rocking the F.L.Hideaway, also in Lennoxville.Anyone who saw them partying it up at the Georgian last weekend knows why they’re becoming the band to see in the burg.Peggy K.Peggy called to remind everybody that Country Fever will be at the North Hatley Legion, and Country Express will play the Brome Hotel.Stay with me now, and don't get confused.Weekend Express will play the Richmond Community Centre on the big night.Tickets are $10 and available through the Quebec By Grade MacDonald Farmer’s Association.I hear there’ll be square dancing. The Chartier Hotel will have Herbie Sharman.Club Aramis will have the Melody Mountain Boys. And the Fin Guelle restaurant in Lennoxville will have live music by Gerald Chartier.Of course, you can always save your money, stay home and get teary-eyed over the show from Times Square in New York and watch the apple drop.Check Tim Belford's column on page 2 for beverage suggestions.Last but not least, I’m going to give another plug for the taxi business.Taxis here are cheap, cheap, cheap, but drunk driving fines are not.Nez Rouge is finished for the year but that’s no reason to be foolish.Don’t drink and drive.RECORWPERRY BEATON Potter Lucy Doheny in her studio with three of her friends. You can read about her on page four.Movies Oh where oh where have the English movies gone?Oh where oh where can they be?Not in this city, that’s for sure. But if you’re into being bilingual and you love English movies dubbed into French Ted Hall of Blue f use will be at the F.L.Hideaway in Lennoxville on New Year’s Eve.For more party ideas, see this page.RECORD/PERRY BEATON there’s certainly something to look forward to.The Capitol in Sherbrooke has the French version of Nuts with Barbara Streisand and Richard Dreyfuss.I don’t think either actor speaks French like a true Quebecer but there are voice-overs to cure this ailment.La Streisand plays a hooker who slits one of her clients’ throats. She ends up in court defending her honor. There are added viewing times over the weekend for some cinemas, this being the holiday season and all, so you may want to call first just to be sure.Toquée plays daily at 12:40, 2:55, 5:10, 7:25 and 9:40.If your little ones are bilingual too then they might enjoy a trip to the movies.Sherbrooke’s Cinema Carrefour has Cinderella and The Princess Bride in French. You may remember Cinderella — the girl who went to the ball and left her shoe behind? This Walt Disney classic shows at 1 p.m.and 2:40 p.m.Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride has also been highly recommended for kids. The film is a mixture of romance, comedy and fantasy. It stars none other than wrestling great André the Giant (ask the kids, they’ll probably know who he is).Bride plays at 4:30, 7 and 9 p.m.If you’re not into taking the kids to the movies then go yourself. The Carrefour has the French version (did I need to say it?) of a French movie remade in English : Three Men and a Baby. This one sounds so ridiculous it should have been called Three meatheads and an unfortunate child who has to be near them.So-called hunks Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg are the bachelor meatheads who suddenly find themselves saddled with a baby. They learn to take care of it and keep it from peeing on their silk sheets.Three Men earned $10 million US during the three-day Christmas holiday weekend.Sound good?Sounds more like amazing to me.But if you insist, Three Men and a Baby plays at 1:30,3:30,5:30, 7:30 and 9:30.Yuck.The other film at the Carrefour is Kenny, the French version of The Kid Brother. This one is made right here in River City (Quebec) and has won the top awards.Kenny tells the heartwarming story of how a boy born without a lower body learns to cope.Movie times for Kenny are 1:15, 3:15, 5:15, 7:15 and 9:15.Over at Sherbrooke’s version of a repertory theatre — Maison du Cinema — you can catch one great English movie, Hope and Glory at 9:15 on New Year’s Eve.The British-made movie about a family during WW I has received rave reviews from Bishop’s University theatre prof Greg Tuck If you truly insist on being unilingual then go to Merrill's in beautiful downtown Newport (are there suburbs outside of Newport?).Steven Speilberg’s latest heartwrencher Batteries Not Included would be a good family-viewing flic. The film tells the story of some old folks (Hume Cronyn and TOWNSHIPS WEEK—THURSDAY.DECEMBER 31, 1987—9 WHAT’S ON Jessica Tandy) who live in an apartment building that the owners are threatening to tear down. One night, the folks go to sleep, leave their window open and in come some UFOs to save the day.If you liked Cocoon you’ll love this one.Showtimes are 1:40,3:35,7 and 9:15 p.m.Also at Merrill’s is that comic offender Eddie Murphy in his latest horrifying epic Raw.Murphy, who can talk dirty with the best of them, is known for his off-ensive, off-color, off-the-wall humor. In his short career he has managed to offend everyone from gays to white people. If you like Eddie, showtimes for this comedy routine on film are 1:55, 4, 7:20 and 9:35.The film includes a fantasy trip to the Murphy home of 1968.Barfly is also at Merrill’s.This is one I have been impatiently waiting to see.Barfly stars none other than best bum in Hollywood Mickey Rourke and the ever-steamy Faye Dunaway. It seems Rourke plays a bum in every movie (The Pope of Greenwich Village, Angel Heart and 9Vi Weeks) and in every movie he just keeps getting more sexy (I could go on but this is a family column).Rourke plays an unrepentent Los Angeles drunk who is offered literary respectability.Dunaway plays his equally down and out girlfriend.Showtimes are 2, 3:55,7:10 and 9:30.My Life as a Dog is a Canadian film that has been around for a few years. The film was originally made in French right here in River City (see above) and is doing well with its Hollywood remake. Can’t tell you much about this one I’m afraid since I don’t know that much about it.Showtimes are 3:20, 7:05 and 9:25.And finally Bill Cosby’s prolonged Coca-Cola commercial is at Merrill’s for another week.Leonard Part 6 was made by Columbia pictures, which is owned by the soft drink company. In the past Coke has had no qualms about sticking Coke bottles into Columbia movies. This time, it seems, they’ve gone one step further.Watch for Leonard driving a Coke car, drinking out of a Coke cup, etc.Eventually the movie props will become some of those valuable prizes you've always wanted to win.Watch for an upcoming contest.Shame on you Mr.Hux-table.Leonard Part 6 plays at 1:50, 7:35 and 9:20.Cinema Princess in Cowansville was not available for comment before this reviewer’s deadline.Give them a call at (514) 263-1933.Here’s a bit of movie trivia for you before I go.There are 15,022 movie screens south of the border in 4,517 movie houses.I’ll bet they even show English movies.Let’s hope the new year brings us health, happiness and more English movies.Despite Lise Bacon.'When I look at a rock I see personality, character.’ Bringing images of the Arctic to southern doorsteps By Laura Eggertson TORONTO (CP) — With a hammer, a chisel and a big block of stone David Ruben Piqtoukun brings images of the Arctic to southern Canada’s doorstep.Attacking a stone slab is one way Piqtoukun copes with living in Toronto, about 6,500 kilometres southeast of Paulatuk, his hometown on the northwestern coastline of the Northwest Territories.“Most people look at a rock and it looks like a rock,” the moustached artist admits.“Myself, when I look at a rock I see it has personality, character — there’s something in the stone that’s breathing.“It’s like one of those horror flicks, The Rock That Breathes,” he jokes.Piqtoukun’s jade, soapstone, alabaster and marble sculptures range in size from a palm-sized bear to a three-tonne Inukshuk landmark. He’s particularly fond of creating angry bears — he identifies the bear as his animal spirit — when city tensions get to him. What is an Inuk from Paulatuk who got lost in Edmonton — where “all the tall buildings looked alike’’ — doing in Toronto?Maintaining the Inuit culture — from a distance, says Piqtoukun (pronounced Pick-tow-kun).GOES NORTH A Toronto resident for the past six years, Piqtoukun makes regular pilgrimages to the Arctic to collect materials — both physical and inspirational — for his sculptures, and to “calm out” from life in the big city.“For the last five years I’ve been collecting oral mythology from the old people in my hometown — sto- ries that have never been documented,” Piqtoukun says.“From a story you see all this imagery in your head and you can pick and choose.” The stories give him enough inspiration that Piqtoukun no longer fears sculptor’s block — like the time about eight years ago when “a rock was starting to look like a rock again.” In Paulatuk, Piqtoukun acts as a bridge to the outside world, bringing home news of his travels and gaining experience of Inuit traditions, such as polar bear and seal hunts. But he’s hasn’t yet killed his own polar bear, the traditional Inuit test of manhood.“So I’m still a boy at 37,” he says.Although his original motivation for sculpting was earning a living, Piqtoukun says that changed when he listened to the old people.“I realized I was learning about my background through listening to the stories, carving and creating all the imagery,” he says.He has since adopted the beliefs he illustrates.“I believe that the shamans had the power to transform. If a guy wanted to be a bear or an owl or a caribou, he could be.” RETAINS FLAVOR Piqtoukun is one of a “new generation” of Inuit artists, says Jean Blodgett, the Art Gallery of Ontario’s adjunct curator of Inuit art, because he has made the transition south without losing the northern flavor of his work.“I consider him a major figure in the contemporary field,” she says. One of the reasons Piqtoukun, a powerful man used to wrestling with his inner conflicts as well as stone, says he’s based in Toronto is access to a variety of materials and markets.Another reason is his wife Esther, whom he met when they argued over buying the same stone sculpture of an avocado.Surrounded by a varied collection of native art and with the company of his Siberian husky Si-koo, which means ice, the sculptor is never far from reminders of his roots.A commercially successful artist since 1969, when he began making $4 pendants for flower children in Vancouver, Piqtoukun has become so sought-after he sells sculptures for between $2,500 and, for a major work, $6,000.As well as carving with everything from woodworking to power tools, Piqtoukun paints and makes screened serigraphs, where every one of 18 colors has to be separately printed.‘Pm more approachable now and I mix more with people.’ Killer Karl Krupp trades the wrestling ring for trucking HALIFAX (CP) — Killer Karl Krupp was in a familiar position — flat on his back, wrestling with an opponent. But this time the enemy wasn’t the Beast or the Cuban Assassin. It was a frozen brake line, buried under a big chunk of rock-hard ice on the axle of Krupp’s semi trailer truck.Once one of the most dreaded bad guys in Atlantic Canadian wrestling, Krupp has become a driver for the Day and Ross Ltd.trucking company. But he used the same tool to fix the brakes as he used to fix wrestlers in the ring — his beefy hands. They are the same hands which formed Krupp’s infamous claw. His most feared wrestling move rendered foes unconscious in a matter of seconds. With one huge paw wrapped around an opponent’s face, Krupp would sneer mercilessly as consciousness seeped out of his enemy. As Krupp crawls out from under the truck in the freezing early morning of a Canadian winter, those hands are stiff from the cold and two decades of pounding in the ring.“If you took a blueprint of my body, you’d see nothing but dislocations and breaks,” he says.“That’s what comes with the type of business and the type of sport I was into.” Krupp, 53, earned a living for 20 years with Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling, travelling from town to town throughout the region. In the ring, he fell naturally into the role of the villain.PEOPLE BOO “People take one look at me and boo,” says the bald man who used to sport a monocle and wore a German eagle on his belt buckle.Karl Krupp — his real name — came by his German accent honestly, even if he did spruce it up a bit for the Grand Prix commentators. He was bom in Mannheim, West Germany, and as a youth was involved with Olympic-style wrestling. He came to Canada at age 19 and became a professional wrestler in the mid-1960s.The fans ate up his villainous image and made Krupp a top draw.“The bad guys tend to be a little more colorful because it’s easier,” says Krupp.“And what it is, too, in my case, is that the crowd picks its own favorites and I could step in the ring and automatically I was the villain.” Krupp won’t say how much he made at the sport, but insists he is driving a truck because he wants to drive a truck.LOVES DRIVING “I loved to drive before I got into wrestling and I love it now,” he says.“Somewhere down the line I’ll probably get one or two trucks of my own.” Krupp says he retired in June because of his battle scars and his age.Asked about the injuries, Krupp sighs and says, “Oh hell, if I list them all we’ll be at it all night.“My ankles were bad, but I’ve been lucky with my knees.I had this (right) leg dislocated at the groin one time, it popped right out.The Beast body-slammed me in North Sydney and the leg popped right out of the socket. It was very, very painful.“My neck has been partially out of joint for years but it is getting better. My collarbone is still out of place, but it has formed its own natural cup — I’ve never had it operated on." Being away from the ring has mellowed the father of three daughters. He has bought a house in Moncton, N.B., and says he tends to be more sociable.“Before, I was travelling all the time and who do you run into?Your average wrestling fan, and all they want to do is throw rocks at you,” he said.“I’m more approachable now and I mix more with people because I’m more or less in one area all the time.I can’t be fighting with my next-door neighbor.” FOR BETTER NUTRITION, PLEASE GIVE TO CARE CANADA CARE Canada 1312 Bank.Ottawa- K1S 5H7 10—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1987 Travel __ isecora Rugs mean economic survival Ethiopian weaving, Kenyan patterns make a thriving business Traditional carpet weaving is the sole means of survival for the women who run Kufuma Carpets in Kenya. The Christian Science Monitor NDARAGWA, Kenya — In a shed adjacent to Joy Mayers’s home, carpets at various stages of creation stretch across large cedar looms.A group of Kikuyu women quietly sing songs as ancient as the gray-green peaks of the nearby Aberdare Mountains.Their fingers move gracefully among the strands of earth-tone wools, knotting then pulling, knotting then pulling. The quiet color and design of the carpets are in sharp contrast to the neon colors the Kikuyu women wear. The hot wind puffs through gaps in the shed walis.Sleeping babies are nestled in colorful kangas tied to their mothers’ backs.Older children play among the fluffy wools piled outside the shed or among the hanks of wool drying in the sun. This is Kufuma Carpets, a cottage industry in the tiny village of Ndaragwa near Nyahururu, or Thompson’s Falls, in central Kenya.Kufuma means weaving in Swahili. But to the women who create the beautiful carpets and to Joy Mayers, the founder of the business, Kufuma means survival.Kufuma is an oasis in the midst of this desolare sweep of land.Mrs.Mayers and her husband, Roy,’ have worked hard to coax the nearby Pesi River through a network of pipes to irrigate the plot of land surrounding their home and business. The lush area stands out vivi- dly against the dry, rutted countryside. The Mayerses' home is situated on a cooperative in which the local Kikuyu inhabitants are shareholders. They receive small plots to farm. But even if the rainfall were sufficient, many of these plots are too small to provide an adequate living. So for these people Kufuma Carpets is also an oasis, a place to earn enough money to buy food and clothing. There is no other employment in the area.About six years ago, Mrs.Mayers, now in her mid-60s, realized she and her husband, Roy, needed some way to support themselves.Previously, the two of them had done just about anything that life in rural Kenya could provide.“There is never a dull moment in Kenya and I am used to this way of life,” says the small, almost fragile, white-haired woman. From farming cattle and sheep to managing large coffee and tea plantations to fashioning furniture from old packing crates, the Mayerses managed to survive in the harsh land where their British parents brought them as babies. At an age when most people are contemplating their retirement, Mrs.Mayers, in her quiet, matter of fact way, decided it was time to get back to work.About this time, Felicity Cos-sins, the Mayerses’ daughter, returned to Kenya after many years in Ethiopia, where she and her husband worked with the Internatio- nal Livestock Commission for Africa.Mrs.Cossins learned the traditional weaving techniques used by tribesmen in Ethiopia to produce carpets.Upon her return to Kenya, Mrs.Cossins taught the Ethiopian weaving technique, an ancient style known for its extreme strength and durability, to some of the women at the cooperative.Previously, the only weaving known to the Kikuyu women was used for creating their colorful carrying baskets, or kiondos. As her daughter started working with variations and innovations on weaving themes established over centuries by the Ethiopians, Mrs.Mayers wondered about ways to make the trade uniquely Kenyan.Together, Mrs.Mayers and her daughter worked with the women on the cooperative to develop a high-quality wool.By combining the strong hair from the Dorper sheep with the refined quality of the Corriedale or Merino sheep, they developed an ideal weaving wool in an assortment of natural grays, browns, and cream colors. The wool is subjected to a series of washings and combings until it is ready to be spun into two-ply or three-ply strands.Working with the Kikuyu women, Mrs.Mayers, whom they affectionately call “shoo-shoo,” or grandmother, designed carpets that incorporated the kiondo basket designs. The result: strong, flat-woven carpets proudly displaying traditional Kenyan designs. The first few carpets were sold to friends.Gradually, their market expanded until now, almost six years later, Kufuma Carpets has customers all over the world as well as in Kenya. They recently completed an order for the Mount Kenya Safari Club.“But they have a problem because the management says it is too nice to walk on,” Mrs.Mayers says. The woman who six years ago wondered if she could ever make enough to support herself has developed some impressive business acumen. Each of her carpets, she stresses, are personally designed.Every one of the thousands of knots that go into each carpet are hand- tied by the weavers. The company now offers a line of plush-pile carpets as well as the flat-weave kiondo carpets, all in a range of sizes.“This,” says Mrs.Mayers, waving an arm at the nearby sheds, “was a challenge and a struggle. Now it is satisfying — but a great deal of work.” In a world where there are no deadlines and time is measured by the coming rains, Mrs.Mayers and the weavers must concentrate on keeping a schedule.“I admire the women workers,” she says.“These women have never had an opportunity to earn their own money before. They enjoy their work, keeping a high standard and teaching and helping each other.” JCappij Mm 9/lw Travel his head after a car accident Saturday, police said.Jason Mizell, 22, was driving north in the West Village with two friends when the vehicle was struck head-on by a car going in the wrong direction at about 3 a.m., police Sgt.John Venetucci said.Mizell and his friends were trapped in their Jeep and were removed by an emergency rescue crew.In addition to head cuts, Mizell complained of chest and leg pains but was in stable condition with minor injuries at St.Vincent’s Hospital, Venetucci said. The driver of the other car, Andreas Lardou, 20, was taken to St.Vincent’s with head cuts.He was issued a summons for driving on the wrong side of the road.Mizell, known as Jam Master Jay, is the disc jockey who provides the backup sounds, including scratched records, for vocalists Joe Simmons and Darryl McDaniels.MONROE, Mich.(AP) — Kaye Lani Rae Rafko says friends in her hometown don’t treat her differently now that she’s Miss America, but there are signs things have changed.City officials earlier this month voted to take down signs referring to Monroe as the home of General George Armstrong Custer and replace them with six signs saying, Home of Kaye Lani Rae Rafko, Miss America 1988.“I think we could probably sell those signs and make a profit at the end of the year,” Mayor Kirk McMullen said. The 24-year-old beauty queen turned down a chance to travel to the Persian Gulf with Bob Hope over the holidays because he could not guarantee she would be home by Jan.3, when she has bookings scheduled. After being crowned Miss America, she says her thoughts immediately turned to her nursing education and the prize-money.“All I kept thinking was, ‘Now my college loan is paid off.Now I can go back to school,”’ she said.PASADENA, Calif.(AP)-Actor Gregory Peck, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin and boxer Muhammad Ali will join floral replicas of space aliens, squawking parrots and Garfield the Cat during the 99th Rose Parade on New Year’s Day.Peck will serve as parade grand marshal this year, despite the protests of some conservative groups angered by the actor’s public opposition to President Ronald Reagan’s unsuccessful effort to put Robert Bork on the U.S.Supreme Court.“As an actor, he has reached across continents, social classes and racial barriers to convey messages of profound importance,” said Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association president Harri-man Cronk in defending Peck’s parade appearance.Peck, known for such films as To Kill a Mockingbird, 12 O’clock High, Moby Dick, and The Yearling, recently appeared in a nationally broadcast television commercial opposing the Bork nomination.
