Bishop’s gallery show collection LENNOXVILLE (RC) - Chris Ljungkull is so proud of the Bishop’s University art gallery’s latest exhibition, she can’t stop talking about it.Titled “Bishop’s Collects”, this exhibit is the first to formally present selected works from the gallery’s art collection for public viewing.Ljungkull, the gallery's co-coordinator is beaming. The exhibit is made up of early acquisitions, portraits of chancellors and principals, some of them made famous by the well-known Canadian artist that painted them. But another aspect of the exhibit is the collection of works representing the scenery of the Townships by landscape artists of the 19th century, including some local artists.“Considering the history of Bis- hop’s and the history of the Townships, the exhibit incorporates all original Townships artists and well known Canadian artists,” Ljungkull said.Among the works on display is a sculpture by architect Frank Hall, who is a well-known alumni of Bishop’s and now teaches the history of architecture at Concordia University. There is also a mildly controversial painting by a W.Milroy, called “View of the St.Francis River” painted in 1897.Ljungkull says the controversy surroun ding this piece is that visitors of the gallery often try to figure out exactly the spot the artist had painted, but everyone thinks it is a different place. Also part of the exhibit are 14 original prints by W.F.Hunter, done in 1850.One in particular has a view of Bishop’s, Ljungkull said. The university set up an art collection committee in 1979 to make recommendations on the purchase and maintenance of works of art.The collection’s purchase program concentrates on finding works related to the Townships, contemporary Canadian art.and original prints.“The show is a celebration of the collection and of the generosity of the alumni and friends of the university who helped financially so that the show could be possible,” Ljungkull explained “And we’ve had an excellent response from the university community and the surrounding community," she added.China Beach the Vietnam women LOS ANGELES (CP) — Bloodstained rags dumped in a trash can, corpses shipped through the “checkout counter,” a nurse howling with anguish .For those who say TV is just escapist mush, welcome to China Beach.Set in a medical facility during the Vietnam War, the new ABC series is a hard, dirty, grimly inspired look at the war through the eyes of a nurse, a Red Cross worker and a volunteer entertainer.Around these three women, in the Hill Street Blues style of crisscrossing story lines, swirls a large cast of other characters — some as familiar as a devoted doctor-type but others as strange as a burned-out “doughnut dolly" turned prostitute. The series begins April 26 with a two-hour movie, then appears again the next night with the first of five weekly episodes. It replaces Heartbeat, another test-flight series that began after Dynasty finished for the season.China Beach obviously comes late in the Vietnam drama wave, but there are some new and interesting twists. The setting, for one, is rife with possibilities.Instead of the usual mix of tents, choppers and foxholes, this series takes place at a rest and-evacuation centre, based on one that actually existed near the U.S.military base at Da Nang.Soldiers recently out of combat were brought to such centres to unwind and sleep, but the dead and wounded were also brought in for shipment home. The result — men laughing and playing ping-pong near a row of body bags — is an atmosphere of madness. On top of this, China Beach is a war story seen through the eyes of women, and their prominence is what makes this Vietnam drama different and worth following.WENT TO HELP “This is not about GIs and guys walking around in the jungle,” says series co-creator William Broyles.“The war is on the other side of the hill.“This is about the effects. It’s about the women — women who went there to help, not kill.” Broyles has certainly chosen three appealing women to play the lead roles. The premiere is mainly concerned with McMurphy’s psychological struggle, but it also introduces Nan Woods, who plays Red Cross worker Cherry White, an innocent small-town type who has come to Vietnam in search of her missing brother Woods is suitably doe-eyed and vulnerable, but the real winner in the cast is Chloe Webb.Co-star of the acclaimed punk movie Sid and Nancy, Webb plays Laurette Barber, a resilient barroom singer with a clumsy, innate intelligence and a gift for opening hearts.AT THE CENTRE “It’s a remarkable crucible for characters,” Broyles says of the setting, “especialy women.“To the soldiers who had been in combat — I mean, a woman may have felt she didn’t dress well or something — but to the soldiers they were Miss America. They were everything they had been, they were home, and they could become the centre of these guys’ universe.” ^BISHOP’S UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC INTENSIVE an exhibition has opened at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as a prelude to the summer season. It’s small because it takes up only one hall, but it's large in scope because it features more than 100 17th-century landscape drawings by Rembrandt and his Dutch contemporaries. The drawings — many of them quick sketches, a few as elaborate as a finished painting — are of the countryside or village, real or mythological, mainly Dutch but some European. Many are no lar- ger than a greeting card and most require the viewer to stand up close to see the details.Frederik Duparc, the museum’s chief curator who is Dutch himself, amassed the collection, which was on view earlier this year at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.Although most artists of the time drew their sketches as aids to memory for eventual paintings, Duparc says most of the drawings in this exhibition were intended to be sold as independent works. To explain what inspired the artists, Duparc quotes a poem published in 1604 called Song of the Land- scape Painter by P.C.Ketel, one of the founders of the Haarlem Academy.GIVES ADVICE The poem gives the following advice: ‘Wake, young painters, to see how the sun breaks through the mist revealing the beauty of the earth.“Take charcoal and chalk, pen, ink, paper and draw whatever catches your eye — a town, a castle, a manor, a farm house, a cottage or sty, floods, rivers, running streams, women milking cows and singing, hunters and their dogs.“Observe and draw, then return ckt* am COUNT DOWN SHERBROOKE THIS WEEK # TITLE LAST WEEK # 1- GET 0UTTA MY DREAMS Billy of the 57 artists in the exhibition are little known outside the Netherlands.Three familiar names are: Rembrandt van Rijn, Jacob van Ruisdael and Meyndert Hobbema.Duparc remarks that, with the exception of Hercules Seghers, who concentrated on fantastic mountain landscapes, the artists mainly produced ordinary Dutch scenes. The 100 or so drawings in the exhibition are a scant few of the total number sketched in the 17th century.“One must realize,” Duparc says, “that hundreds, probably thousands, of drawings have disappeared, as once their usefulness as aides-memoire to the artist had been served they were often no longer considered valuable.” The exhibition was formally opened last Friday by Princess Christina of the Netherlands.Landscape in Perspective: Drawings by Rembrandt and His Contemporaries continues until May 29.Croc is guide to the 80s that makes Quebec laugh By Victor Dabby MONTREAL (CP) — Jacques Hurtubise interrupts a reporter in mid-interview, and with a mischievous grin asks: “ Do you know what you call a Quebec Tory MP looking for a second term in office?” Pause.“A repeat offender,” he blurts out, convulsed with laughter.Whether it’s the province’s hapless Tories or Montreal’s homosexual population, no one is spared the biting sarcasm of Hurtubise and his crew at Croc, the bestselling Quebec humor magazine. Some people may find Croc's humor offensive, like the “ad” from Dr.Henry Morgentaler’s abortion clinic announcing “a two-for-one sale for women expecting twins.” But Hurtubise, 36, a stocky, six-foot-four former engineering student, must be tickling a lot of fun-nybones out there. The French-language monthly — its name means fang and is pronounced crow — is now in its 10th year of publication and paid circulation is rapidly approaching the 100,000 mark.BEGAN ON GRANT First established with an $80,000 cultural grant from the Quebec government, Croc is now financially self-sufficient and employs more than 80 writers, editors and cartoonists. The original grant setting up the magazine, says Hurtubise, “is probably the best investment the Quebec government ever made.” Explaining the magazine’s success, Patrick Beaudin, Croc’s 37-year-old special projects director and a former theology student, puts it this way: “We (Quebecers) live in a time when there is no sacred cow.“Ever since Brian Mulroney savaged John Turner for patronage, then turned around and helped himself to the bacon, people stopped believing in institutions.“They believe in themselves and little else.Croc is a good guide to the ’80s.Everyone is walking a thin line .and no one knows what is going to happen next. It’s good to be able to laugh about it.” HIT POLITICIANS Politicians usually provide Croc with its easiest targets. The April issue has Kurt Waldheim announcing he was joining Amnesia International, while former Parti Québécois leader “Peter Mark Johnson” apologized from Toronto (where he’s teaching law) that his French was getting rusty. And yet politicians themselves aren’t above using Croc to reach its all-important young (mainly in the 18-to-35 bracket) readership. In 1985, both Pierre-Marc Johnson and the Liberals' Robert Bou-rassa allowed themselves to be interviewed for a special issue just before the provincial election.Hurtubise says Prime Minister Mulroney has also agreed to be interviewed “just before the next federal election.” In fact, interjects Beaudin, “politicians often contact us to be interviewed and we turn them down.” UNLIKELY TOPIC When not aiming at politicians, Croc turns its guns elsewhere. The main topic of the April issue is the handicapped, and on the magazine’s cover is a takeoff of Kenny Easterday, the legless boy who starred in the hit Quebec movie The Kid Brother. The cover shows a kid who’s all legs and nothing else, standing on a skateboard. So how do you even start to make jokes about the handicapped?“This issue was prepared with the help of handicapped people,” says Hurtubise.“We went to a centre for the handicapped and asked some of the people there to tell us some jokes.“There are some we cannot publish but we found out that handicapped people can tell some very mean jokes about each other.Only among themselves, of course.” The illustration for the section shows a demented-looking Mulroney standing on a podium with even more demented-looking Tories behind him.Inside, Mulroney is described as “Canada's handicap, (with) nothing in his head, everything in his chin.” TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.APRIL 22.1988—5 Ladd makes living painting Townships landscapes By Rossana Coriandoli KNOWLTON — Gordon and Phyllis Ladd found a formula that really works for them; he paints the pictures; she sells them.Gordon Ladd is a local landscape artist who has managed to make a living from his art for almost all of the 21 years he has been painting.Born in Bonneville, the 58-year-old artist has also lived in St.Jean and Granby. For the last 11 years he and his wife have been living in Knowlton, where their home also serves as a gallery for Ladd’s works.Ladd says he restricts himself almost exclusively to painting landscapes of the Townships and almost never paints portraits of any kind.“It doesn’t suit what I do best or my interets.I have no intention of painting people.I paint nature with an emphasis on individual subjects," he explained.Ladd attributes his successful career to his friends support, who bought his paintings when he first started. He also attributes it to a natural ability.“I was born with a choice of colors that a large percentage of the population likes, and people like to know where the place was,” he said.“I paint actual locations and interpret them to suit myself, and often it’s closer to what you see than what a photograph would capture.” VERY SERIOUS Ladd also said many of his paintings are bought by people who want specific landscapes on commission.Out of the 132 paintings he sold last year.25 were sold on commission. Many artists don't like working on commissioned pieces because they prefer to paint what they like, he said. But added he doesn’t feel any pressure from that kind of work.It is obvious before even entering their home that the couple takes Ladd’s art very seriously.Hanging over the front porch is an old fashioned sign saying the gallery is open. And the gallery is in the first room near the front door, available to anyone wanting to browse. The walls are covered with burlap, and sprinkled with framed Ladd pieces, titled and priced. The pricing is a joint effort, depending on how much Gordon likes each individual painting when it is finished, and on Phyllis’ opinion of how much it can sell for.But as the manager of the whole affair, Phyllis usually has the last word on that matter. She is in charge of pricing, cataloguing, keeping track of the paintings that are out on exhibit, keeping track of the places he paints and of promoting “her husband, the artist”.She quit her job as a statistician for a Burlington firm several years ago to take on the the business of selling her husband’s works, and she takes her job very seriously.COLLECTOR PLATE Ladd says he only began painting “for fun”, eight years before he retired from Bell Canada, where he worked for 37 years. The Ladds moved to Knowlton where they had decided they would put money back into the business.“It was planned all along,” he explained.“But very soon I knew where I wanted to go,” he added.Right now Ladd is very busy. The Lennoxville gift shop The Homestead is using one of his paintings, “The Round Bam”, on a collector plate; the first plate in the series titled “Quebec Art”.He will be going with The Homestead to the 3rd annual collectibles show in Kingston, Ont., where he will autograph his plates and also exhibit some of his other paintings.Ladd is the first Quebec artist to have his art on a collector plate, and will be among 12 artists at the show. But Ladd says the plate itself is not all that important to him.“It’s not just the plate, it’s the publicity from the Canada-wide circulation of the plate that counts,” he said.USES PHOTOGRAPHS Ladd has also done work for Graphics I’Estrie, a Sherbrooke firm that has used his landscapes on the playing cards it sells in Canada and the U.S.Ladd has also received a commission from Hyundai Ladd also said many of his paintings are bought by people who want specific landscapes on commission.Auto of Canada for a painted Christmas card the company plans to send to its dealers. His technique for painting his landscapes is to go on photography trips around the Townships. He then choses a photograph of a particular spot or subject he liked and paints it.He also sometimes allows himself some artistic licence, takes out a bush here, adds another one there. His next trip will be to Lennoxville, where he plans to do some photography to prepare himself for his annual exhibit at The Homestead in the fall. But before that he will be the first artist to exhibit his work at the brand new Auberge Le Viking in Knowlton next month.“/ was born with a choice of scandal sheets By Jerry Schwartz NEW YORK (API — The gullible among us believed that actor James Dean died in the wreckage of his Porsche Spyder on a California highway 33 years ago, but readers of Private Lives magazine weren’t fooled.“He didn’t die.He lives on, maybe right next door to YOU.And someday soon perhaps Jimmy, in his own way and in his own good time, will once more come back and face the world that waits for him,” the magazine reported at the time.Private Lives was not the only exploitation magazine thatsugges-ted in the weeks and months after Dean’s accident on Sept.30, 1955 that the 24-year-old actor was alive.“People wanted to believe that Dean was alive,” said Alan Be-trock, editor of The Best of James Dean in the Scandal Magazines 1955-58, a collection of Dean-mania from such magazines as Whisper, On the QT.Anything Goes, Hush-Hush and Uncensored.INEVITABLE?“I think this happens whenever someone with a fairly rabid follo- wing dies at an early age,” Betrock said.“Remember, after the assassination, there were those who believed John F.Kennedy was braindamaged and living in the Bahamas, something that wasn’t supported by facts.” Betrock has reproduced the pages of the scandal magazines in full, along with ads for shrunken heads “molded of virgin rubber” and photographs of a woman named Lolita: “If you like 'em BUXOM, maybe you’ll like my photos.” The articles are also accompanied by many pictures of Dean, the wreck and shapely starlets such as Pier Angeli, Ursula Andress and Terry Moore, all of whom were linked romantically with the star of Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden. The actor’s death in the crash transformed him from a movie actor on the brink of stardom to the patron saint of young American rebels. His portrayals of vulnerable and moody young men who openly-expressed fear and pain became standards for a generation.GOES ON His mystique has endured.Rock songs such as the Eagle’s James Dean and David Essex’s Rock On evoke his name. The movie 9-30-55 studied the reactions of contemporary fans to Dean’s death.A Broadway play and later a film, Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, took aim at the hopeless nostalgia created by some fans. Some magazines knocked the “Dean is not dead” stories.Lowdown magazine reported that the deceased Dean received 8,000 love letters a month.“This is gruesome mental illness of the unheal-thiest order,” wrote the editor. The Area's Dining Guide Jinc Vi uismc 70 Main St., North Hatley (819) 842-4246 PIZZAVILLE LENN0XVILLE 4 Breakfast specials *169 t(J Sr Seafood - about the manner of their transcription be it longhand, typescript or computer-assisted word processing; about their regular discipline as a writer, whether they are night writers or day writers ; whether they keep notebooks from which they work; and about stylistic tricks or mannerisms in their work and the kinds of voices that their narrators take on.The answers Hancock receives are as interesting as their speakers, and a complete novice in Canadian fiction would be drawn to certain writers (Leon Rooke, Robert Kroetsch or Alice Munro) just by virtue of their interview “voice”.By the same token, certain authors come across as pom- mmm WRITERS Interviews Hancock a Kaleidoscope D., Ann i s'M.iex/ By RICHARD LONEY pous, self-centered and needlessly pedantic, and the substance of their interview apears to speak against their even being considered “Canadian” writers — such as the husband-wife team of Clark Blaise and Bharati Mukherjee. For instance, how does growing up in Florida make Blaise a distinctly Canadian writer?Other writers, such as Mavis Gallant and Jack Hodgins, while they may not command the popular idolatry of a Robertson Davies or a Margaret Atwood, catch the reader up in their enthusiams and act as unpretentious, accidental promoters of their own writing. There are expected topical excursions during Writers At Work.Jane Rule is drawn to discuss the manifestations of lesbianism that pervade her work.Jack Hodgins reveals that the groundwork for his novel The Invention of the World led him to do a great deal of reading of Irish literature.Josef Skvorecky is eloquent about the state of exiled Czechs and their vision of literature, shaped as it was by the Nazi and subsequent Soviet invasions of their homeland. And Mavis Gallant is able to articulate her position as a writer-in-exile, and the peculiarities of her compositions such as Paris Notebooks (1986) and The Pegnitz Junction (1973), as she attempts to maintain her Canadia-nism in the City of Light. These interviews share nothing of the wide-eyed, empty-minded queries that are so maddening when early morning News program interviewers encounter a major writing “personality” only to ask the most boring, obvious, and uninformed questions.Hancock has done his homework on each writer he interviews, often perplexing even the subject of the interview with his total recall of obscure characters and events that even their creators have temporarily forgotten. His ability to bring out these often reticent, publicity-shy types (such as Alice Munro.who is the diametrical opposite of showboat Margaret Atwood) is a credit to Geoff Hancock’s abilities as an interviewer.Canadian Writers At Work is a valuable resource work to be consulted when readers are anxious to learn more about some of our natural resources in the business of creating fiction.RECORD REVIEWS Feargal Sharkey Wish (VIRGIN-A&M) It’s been an eventful three years since Derry, Ireland-native Feargal Sharkey put himself under the tutelage of The Eurythmies’ Dave Stewart for the recording of his first album, an eponymous effort that hit big in November of 1985.Now, Sharkey’s committment to making it big in America is confir- med by the release of Wish, on which he joins forces with Danny Kortchmar, a veteran of countless sessions with everyone from James Taylor to Linda Ronstadt.Danny Kootch plays guitars, saxes, slides, acoustics, keys, and chimes in on vocals, all while he is the session producer for Sharkey’s second.Able to recruit the elusive Keith Richards for a guitar solo on “More Love” (what else does an idle Stone do for kicks?), Kortchmar changes Sharkey’s sound a tad, filling it out with an American R&B edge that wasn’t as discernible on his first outing. The tune “More Love”, written by Benmont Tench of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, has lots of Richards’s raw hammering on the guitar, as well as additional string work from L.A.session regular Waddy Wachtel.who shows up on several other tracks as well.Steve Jordan lays down some metrono-mically-regular drum work, while David Lasley and Arnold McCuller add backing vox over Kootch’s surprisingly solid sax wailing.“Full Confession” sneaks over into Commodore’s territory, thanks to the vocal answering gimmick; “Please Don’t Believe In Me” features David Paich of Toto on piano & synths, with Leland Sklar’s bass rounding out the West Coast mafia of session folk.Additional tracks add an oop-shoop doo-wop sound to Sharkey’s album, seemingly fulfilling the desired objective of having this Irish singer take on an American identity — now the American cash registers will decide if this is the Feargal Sharkey they prefer.AC/DC Blow Up Your Video (ATLANTIC-WEA) It’s difficult to do a comparative rating of the heaviest of the metal bands because their output is so formulaic and stereotyped, but if one act raises its fearsome head above the rest of the motley crew it has to be AC/DC, Australia’s contribution to decibel rock.Their latest is laden with Brian Johnson’s growling lead vocals and the songs of the Young brothers, Malcolm and Angus.“That’s The Way I Wanna Rock N Roll” is an example of the anthem-style rock ditties that AC/DC specializes in.“Meanstreak” is a string-bender of a tune that wanders all across the keyboard, with the bass guitar laying down a steady lead line that all the other instruments follow.Who cares if the vocals on “Go Zone” are so strangled and forced that Johnson's lyrics are incomprehensible, these guys really know how to rock! There’s certainly a major irony at work here : how is it that most of the metallic battalions have such wimpy-voiced singers doing their vocal lines? But then again, if AC/ DC possessed a wonderful vocalist they wouldn’t have to turn the gui- tars up so loud, would they?VIDEO SCREENINGS Innerspace (WARNER HOME VIDEO) George Lucas, having conquered outer space to the delight of kids who couldn't get enough of his Star Wars concept, filmmaker Steven Spielberg makes a natural progression as he moves into the complexities of inner space. His latest production, directed by Joe Dante, is a high-tech thriller which flirts with some of the concepts that particle physics folk are even now fiddling with in their laboratories.Lt.Tuck Pendleton (Dennis Quaid) is a reckless astronaut type who volunteers to have himself and his inner space capsule miniaturized and inserted into the blood stream and the rest of the body of a rabbit, under controlled conditions. The Silicon Valley wars lead to some mayhem in which the experiment goes very much awry, only to have the capsule and the unknowing pilot injected into the buttock of unsuspecting Safeway cashier Jack Putter (Martin Short).Herein lies the film’s strength, and its weakness.Short’s performance is admirable, but a pastiche of most of the caricatures he has retailed extensively on the Saturday Night Live teeveer. There are a few hilarious scenes in which Short starts to hear Quaid making contact with him through his inner ear, and his response to the thought that he may be possessed offers [Ft A It NORD-SUD 9:00 a MOVIE Sharing Richard (1988.Comedy) Ed Marinaro.Eileen Davidson.Premiere.Three women devise a plan to share the affections of the recently divorced plastic surgeon they ve all been dating, g O IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (In Stereo) a © CHINA BEACH (Premiere) Drama focusing on three women (Dana Delany, Chloe Webb.Nan Woods) whose lives are drastically altered by their experiences in Vietnam g B MOONLIGHTING g © MOVIE "Une Chambre en ville" (1982) Dominique Sanda, Richard Berry.L’idylle dramatique entre un ouvrier et la jeune femme d'un commercant B FRONTLINE Examines the differences between American and Japanese cultures, using the game of baseball to illustrate each country’s approach to business practices, g (TSN) DAVIS CUP TENNIS France vs.Switzerland.Highlights of first round play between France and Switzerland (T aped) 9:15 (FC) MOVIE * "Meatballs III" (1967, Comedy) Sally Kellerman, Patrick Dempsey. After dying while in the throes of sexual ecstacy, a porn star is returned to Earth to help a bumbling teen-ager lose his virginity and gain some self-esteem.R 10:00 a a LE TELEJOURNAL g a CRIME STORY Torello and the Strike Force travel to Latin America to bring Luca back to the United States.(In Stereo) g a a ad lib a MOUNT ROYAL g a VOICES & VISIONS Excerpts from Hart Crane's epic poem “The Bridge" highlight this portrait of a jxret fascinated by technology and its impact on humanity. The Gay Divorcee (1934.Musical) Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers A case of mistaken identity results in romance for an American dancer and a young woman seeking a divorce."The Continental won the first Best Song Oscar (FC) MOVIE *'/!
