Turner is in terrible trouble.But the biggest change since Tadeusz departed is in his favorite paper’s subsidizing of the new Montreal Daily News — not only with publisher George MacLaren — but with ex-editor Jim Duff, photographer Perry Beaton, wine-bibber Tim Belford.reporters Bill Harris.Laurel Sheerer, Gracie MacDonald and even Bernie St.Laurent (great-nephew of the great Louis St.Laurent) who used to share office space with the Record.And the Record’s been turned upside down so the printers work nights, Smiling Velmore Smith and all the other carriers have to get up early while the scribblers sleep in.Since they no longer have that 3-hour sprint to the old 9 a m.deadline, the writing is more polished, editorials more thoughtful and coverage of the Townships more thorough.The Townships page is now a page-and-a-half — and expanding.Lately, a hot news flash.The rumor mill has it that Gary ‘The Demographer’ Caldwell — despite the continued decline of English-speaking Townshippers — no longer believes we are doomed to total assimilation.We can all sleep easier now.Moose Jaw to be the next Hollywood?By Bob Cox REGINA (CP) — Move over.Areola.Moose Jaw is vying to become Saskatchewan’s new movie city.Areola, a tiny hamlet in southeastern Saskatchewan, has laid claim to being the province’s Hollywood for a decade since the last time the government helped finance a film — the production of W.O.Mitchell’s classic Who Has Seen The Wind.But now that the province has decided to put money into movies again, the central city of Moose Jaw has been chosen as the location of the first production.“It has to look cold and threatening,” said writer Ken Mitchell, explaining why cameras will be on Moose Jaw streets next January to film an adaptation of his short story The Great Electrical Revolution.Set in the 1930s, the story tells of an Irish immigrant family which steals electricity from the power company in retaliation for having its electricity cut off in the middle of a favorite radio program.The first part of the film will be set in the CP Rail station in Moose Jaw.The half-hour show is expected to be ready for broadcast on Saskatchewan’s STV stations next spring.Mitchell, a Regina writer whose works include the screenplay for The Hounds of Notre Dame, spent almost two years converting his story for the screen and said he’ll ha ve to do more work to get it down to a half-hour, made-for-TV production.“In many ways it’s a keystone,” Mitchell said of the script.“Having this script in place helped attract the project around it.” PLAN SERIES The Great Electrical Revolution will be the first of seven half-hour TV productions financed in part by the Saskatchewan government and the National Film Board.“What it’s meant to be is 100-per-cent Saskatchewan,” said Barbara Stewart, a regional producer for the board in Saskatchewan.Colin Maxwell, Saskatchewan’s minister of recreation and culture, said last week the province will pay $600,000 over three years to be matched by $600,000 from the NFB.Telefilm Canada is also expected to contribute up to 49 per cent of production costs, but no definite amount of money has been agreed to.SaskWest Television Inc., part of Winnipeg entrepreneur Izzy As-per’s Canwest group of companies, has agreed to buy the broadcast rights for the productions for about $300,000. new organization, the Quebec Society for the Promotion of English Language Literature (QSPELL) has just announced the creation of annual literary awards for the province’s English language writers.QSPELL plans to give three prizes in its first year to writers of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.QSPELL was created last fall by Montreal “literati” as a voluntary By Thomas Goldsmith NASHVILLE (CP) — When K.D.Lang started having trouble during a recent recording session in Nashville, she took her problems to a higher power — Patsy Cline.Never mind that country super-star Cline, who sang hits like I Fall to Pieces, died in 1963.Cline’s influence on Lang’s career has been so strong that the native of Consort, Alta., (pop.650), named her band the Reclines.Lang also chose Cline’s producer, Owen Bradley, to oversee her new album Shadowland.Bradley, 73, called upon three of country music's best known female vocalists — Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn and Brenda Lee — to add a unique touch to Lang’s new record.The three women eventually appeared on a medley on the album and in a new video, but not until Lang and Bradley had a brief wrangle over details of the project.“Actually we had a big fight about it,” Lang said during a recent video shoot at Bradley’s country studio.“I stomped out to the lake and had a talk with Patsy to find out why he was so on the Tonight Show TV program, and she put on an exciting performance during the closing cermonies at the Winter Olympics.Lang proved her mettle at last year’s Canadian music awards, the Junos, when she defeated perennial winner Anne Murray as best female country vocalist.Lang and Bradley had originally planned to record only six songs for a mini-album but it fast became a full-scale project.The record, made with Nashville session musicians instead of the Reclines, has been critically acclaimed as one of the most dazzling vocal performances of 1988.Some critics have asserted that Shadowland is her real debut, instead of last year’s muddled effort, Angel With a Lariat, which sold 50,000 copies in Canada but was not the hit that had been predicted.FINDS NEW HERO “Working with Owen, I realized that I was as big a Bradley fan as I was a Cline fan,” Lang said.“It some lesser-known writers as well as people within the province’s literary community such as publishers and university professors.Among the more recognized members of QSPELL are such biggies of Canadian letters as poet Ralph Gustafson, Hugh MacLennan.Irving Layton.Mavis Gallant and Mordecai Richler.“The hard part was the fundraising," King said.But the funds were raised, enough money for three $2,000 prizes, and even some left over for administrative costs, “As long as we had enough for the prizes, we don’t mind if we have with idols was a good experience.It just went so easily.” Filled with tunes by country stalwarts such as Roger Miller, Bob Wills and Harlan Howard, Shadowland combines Bradley’s classic Brothers’ Blues Stay Away from Me.“I think it was one of the easiest sessions I’ve ever had,” Lee said.“K.D.can sing any part.And Loretta has a great range, as does Kitty, so it wasn’t hard to find our parts at all.” During a news conference that preceded the video shoot, Lang was asked whether she felt intimidated working with the country legends.“I think that intimidated is the wrong word,” she said.“I think I felt honored and blessed.” Added Lee, “If you’ve ever seen K.D.work live, you’ll know that not much intimidates her.” instruments felt ready to return to Ontario.Six months ago he enter the contest will have to lived in Quebec three out of the last five years.The works must have been written originally in English, no translations are accepted, although the writers' mother McConville shaves fine slivers of wood from a Celtic harp frame in his workshop.McConville, 33, is a luthier — a builder of stringed instruments — and one of the few in North America to construct the Celtic harp.Once completed, the instrument will look identical to those played by McConville’s Irish forefathers 12 centuries ago, but thanks to modern technology will sound far superior.Born in Ireland, McConville came to Canada with his parents as a baby.He became interested in the luthier craft at age 12, when his father bought him his first guitar — an electric one — from a part-time luthier.McConville went along “and parts lying around, it did something to me.“1 took the guitar home, took the neck off, and designed and built one of my own I liked better.” He’s been working with instruments ever since, often using tools he has designed and built himself.HE’S A MUSICIAN A musician as well as luthier, McConville has travelled with a number of bands, plays half a dozen instruments and sings.While performing in northern Quebec, he discovered a shortage of stringed-instrument repair facilities and decided to move there and capitalize on the void.After he’d seemingly
