ironworks feature old stamps Canada Post issued a stamp on August 19 commemorating Les Forges du Saint-Maurice.The unveiling of the stamp took place in Trois Rivieres at the site of Canada’s first industrial complex. The Saint-Maurice Ironworks began operations in 1738 through the efforts of Gilles Hocquart, who served as Intendant of New France from 1729 to 1748.The Industrial complex, which at its height had a population of 425, was situated in a location that provided an abundance of natural resources to operate an industry of this scale. The energy needed to drive the overshot wheels, which in turn powered the bellows and hammers, was provided by the Lavoir Creek.Local iron was melted down with the charcoal made from wood that was in abundance around the forge.MADE AT THE FORGE The forge was forced to close down in 1883 when the use of coke in other smelters made the charcoal smelter obsolete. In 1973 the government made the site a National Historic park. While attending the ceremonies, one was reminded of some of the objects produced by such a forge that appears on other Canadian stamps. The Heritage series, which first made its appearance in 1986, features three stamps with | articles which were more than likely made at this forge at one time. They are the 37-cent plow with an iron tip, the 55-cent iron kettle and the 64-cent wood burning stove.Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Les Forges du Saint-Maurice.You will find it most interesting.*** PRAGA ’88, a Fédération Internationale de Philatelie-sponsored international stamp exhibition, Stamp corner By is shocked by dishonesty and goes his own way.In maintaining his freelance status, he sometimes gets stuck but figures that’s all part of the game. That’s how he came by the tombstone and coffin. His mother-in-law was rushed to hospital at 84, deathly ill, and Chickenfat saw an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.He won’t talk about the details but she’ll be 92 on Halloween and both the undertaker and monument-maker refused to take their merchandise back. After barking his shins on the stone over the years, he finally moved it and the coffin to the center of his showroom as a conversation piece.Actually, it isn’t really a showroom.More of a shed. But he plans to letter a big sign on one end of it as soon as he can promote some paint.“CHICKEN-FAT’S ANTIQUES”, it will say.“Bought, Sold or vigor of English lies in its bald-faced piracy from almost every language on the globe and outright defiance of all rules and regulations.Certain four-letter words, for example, have been vigorously suppressed for hundreds of years but are as boisterous today as ever they were because language belongs to the people, not the authorities.French has other problems. It is not long ago that the word ‘Office’ was ta ken to court and declared acceptably French and not long before that when ‘Stop’ was officially ejected as too English. Now Malcolm Stone, who writes a fine column in the Stanstead Journal, has recorded the birth of a brand new threat to French purity that appeared in the August 20th La Presse.“Vous me connaissez,” said Jean Perron of the Nordiques, “Je ne boulechite pas.” Words have a life all their own and the verb ‘boulechiter’ is so expressive and forceful it should have a long and happy career ahead.*** Last week, a wire service announcement struck our editor’s fancy and he passed it on.The Montreal Opera opens its season tomorrow with Madame Butterfly and featuring subtitles in both official languages. That means Cio-Cio-San, a Japanese geisha in love with an American lieutenant, will sing in Italian with simultaneous translations into English and French. For those of us more familiar with horse opera than Grand Opera, a word of explanation. Both are dedicated to sex and violence but horses when people get shot in a horse opera, they bleed. When they get stabbed in Grand Opera — a not uncommon occurrence — they sing. The art, in short, requires a certain suspension of disbelief and Beverly Sills’ lead in making opera more accessible to New Yorkers with subittles was a mixed blessing. You can get away with things in passionate Italian that just won’t do in everyday English or French and things that wow ’em in New York may not play at all in Quebec.NOT PROFOUND IN QUEBEC For a convenient example, take Puccini’s La Bohème, another Montreal offering this season. That opens on a freezing Paris garret with a poet and a painter bemoaning their poverty.Rudolfo, the tenor poet, stares out the window and sings that all the chimneys in the city are dutifully smoking but theirs.Baritone Marcello replies from his easel that their stove hasn’t had wages in a long time.Well, sighs Rudolfo, “forests are of little use under snow.” Now that might sound very profound in New York or Milan where they know little of forests and less of snow, but Quebecers know all too much about both. Then Marcello says his fingers are so cold they feel as if they’ve been touching the icy heart of the Beautiful Musetta and both fall to comparing love to a furnace in which men are cosumed while women, who lit the fires, stand idly by.As Anna Russell used to say, “I’m not making this up, you know.” Quilt Week to begin Quiltmakers and quilt lovers take note.To celebrate Asbestos Quilt Week which will be held from Sept.18 to Sept.25 to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the art of quiltmaking, the members of the Asbestos quil-ters guild invite you to their quilt exhibit ’88, Saturday, Sept.24 from 1 to 10 p.m and Sunday, Sept.25 from 10 a.m.to 7 the game.Szathmary is the president of the International Astronomical Artists Association, a group of artists around the world that paint accurate pictures of space. His work with the association has introduced him to several astronauts and people that work on the ground in space centers. And because of that, Quantum Baseball may soon be played in space.“The astronauts needed leisure activities in space. We’ve sent games to Ames Research and they’re now testing it,” Szathmary said.As well, the U.S.Naval Office may soon begin testing the game to use on submarines. And some of Szathmary s astronomical artist friends who work on the Star Trek series may implement the game on the show this fall.“Some of the artists were trying to fit baseball into the script. They may use this and adapt it for the 24th century. After all, that’s how the west was won — by card games,” says Gail. But there’s just one small dispute to be ironed out.Szathmary calls Quantum Baseball a baseball game.Gail says it’s a card game.“A good card player can beat a baseball player,” Gail says. You don’t have to know anything about baseball to play the game, Szathmary says, but a few ideas about odds in card games helps.Szathmary says the game is just like real baseball, without the physical activity.Because of it’s mathematical basis, you can generate statistics from the game.Players can hit runs, hit to the outfield and even steal bases. The Szathmarys hope the game will be popular with college and university students so leagues can be set up and winners will get their names on the No Ball Prize Trophy. The sculptured trophy was designed by a Townships artist and sits in the Szathmary’s living room, waiting for the first winner Now that the game is on the market the two will be busy discovery SAN SALVADOR, The Bahamas — On Oct.12,1992, Christopher Columbus will step ashore on the Bahamian island ol San Salvador. That moment will be the high point of a dramatic re-creation of the discovery of the New World 500 years earlier. The Christopher Columbus who arrives in 1992 is now a captain in the Spanish navy and a descendant of the famous explorer His lineage was authenticated before he was picked to lead the voyage that will mark the 500th anniversary of the day in 1492 when, according to the schoolboy rhyme, "Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” The modern-day Columbus will sail here from Spain on one of three ships that will be replicas of the ones the explorer used — the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. The Spanish government is building them from wood taken from the same forest that provided timber for the originals.Accompanying Captain Columbus will be a crew composed at least in part of sailors descended from the explorer s crew. The only major difference will be that the 1992 voyage will be tracked by satellite.MET BY VISITORS When the Spaniards stepped ashore here in 1492 they were greeted by Arawak Indians, gentle people who had fled to The Bahamas to escape the Caribs — warlike cannibals who lived further south in what we now call the Caribbean. When the modern-day Spaniards come ashore in 1992, they will be met by excited Bahamians and visitors from all over the world who will be participating in an event 10 years in the preparation. The job of planning locally for the 500th anniversary — the Quin-centennial — rests with a commission The Bahamas government es- tablished in 1982.Its chairman is Philip Smith, a member of Parliament whose constituency includes San Salvador, an island 200 miles south and east of Nassau. The commission is sifting through a number of proposals — some simple, others grandiose — for marking the Quincentennial.Although the event is still a few years off, here are some of the projects that are most likely to be undertaken: *An international Christian service at the site of Columbus’s landfall.Smith notes that Columbus’s arrival marked the introduction of Christianity to the Western world.“Muslims have Mecca as a focal point of Islam, so why not have San Salvador as a focal point for Christianity?,” Smith explains.*A landfall park incorporating a chapel, museum and the recreation of an Arawak village.Smith says the park will definitely be established, but what form it will take has not been decided It might contain commemorative monuments from various countries, it might be something as elaborate as a theme park."The long-term maintenance and practical utilization will be major factors,” says Smith."Resort facilities — something San Salvador lacks — are being studied, as is a centre to which young Bahamians, and perhaps young people from around the world, could come to study the cause of peace.Other ideas include cultural and sporting events, creation of a national museum and library and international regattas to expose the sailing world to the 100,000 square miles of beautiful Bahamian waters.Between now and 1992 the world A simple white cross marks the spot where Columbus’ known as Long Bay, the Great Discoverer became first landfall in the New World is believed to have The Bahamas’ first tourist, taken place.Somewhere on this white sand beach ‘‘MM ’-A- will hear a lot more about the Quincentennial.Spain, which is playing host in 1992 to both a world’s fair and the summer Olympics, is showing a great interest in the Bahamian ceremonies.Smith says.INTEREST AT HOME The Quincentennial commission’s biggest task is igniting interest at home. One way of arousing interest is printing colorful posters about Bahamian heroes, many of whom are virtually unknown in The Bahamas. One is Joseph Spence, a folk guitarist who, Smith says, was well known in the United States.Another is Paul Meer, an interpretive dancer who performed before every crowned head in Europe.Smith says there are many Bahamians living today who don’t realize that their ancestors were heroes for fighting against slavery 150 years ago.Smith also speaks passionately about another aspect of Columbus’s arrival. He believes that it was on that historic day in 1492 that a white man, a black man and an indigenous Indian met for the first time. The black man.Smith says, was a member of Columbus’s crew. Some historians argue this point, just as they do about the precise location of Columbus’s landfall in The Bahamas. There’s no argument about one thing : Oct.12,1992, will be a date to remember in the country where Columbus first set foot in the New World.Antigua Large enough to have variety for tourists ST.JOHN’S, Antigua — In an article published by Gourmet Magazine in November, 1981, Doone Beal had nothing but praise for this little Eastern Caribbean island.“Digging one’s toes into the warm, white sand," he began, “a rum punch at one’s elbow, palm trees rustling overhead, and a pea cock-blue ocean lapping nearby, epitomizes the Caribbean dream It can be a triumph of hope over experience, of travel brochure over reality, but Antigua, one of the Leeward Islands, fulfills that dream in handsome profusion.” Although it embraces an area of only 280 square kilometers, well under half the size of Metropolitan Toronto, Antigua is still large enough to offer the hohdayer much variety, and with a good range of hotels ringing the island (almost all of them facing onto a white sand beach), there are many bases from which to engage in exploration. Not all visitors here arrive by plane, although most of them do.Yachtsmen from around the world target the island, especially during the annual Sailing Week in late April, and every year thousands of visitors drop by for a day as passengers aboard the rising tide of cruise ships that abound in the Caribbean.NAMED AFTER HIM Antigua has been a sailor’s island ever since the English naval hero, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, arrived at the age of 26 a bit more than 100 years ago to take charge of Britain’s main Caribbean naval base at English harbor. It was part of Nelson’s assignment to complete the Dockyard that has been named after him and is now, with some surrounding territory, a national park. The Dockyard fell into ruin when the British Navy abandoned it around the beginning of this century, but it has been restored, with the help of funds raised, particularly in the U.S., Canada and Britain, by the Friends of English Harbor. So masterfully was the restoration done that you get the feeling that this is what it looked like in Nelson’s day.High above, overlooking the Dockyard, is Shirley Heights where the British Army was stationed when Nelson was the naval commander. It offers some magnificent views of the island and is frequented by visitors from the world over, among them young lovers who find it a romantic place to pledge eternal troth.Today, the Dockyard is not only the major single lure of Antigua, but the top attraction of the entire eastern Caribbean.Three places are particularly worth taking in — the Admiral’s Inn, which operates one of the best restaurants on the island; the Copper and Lumber Store, now embracing a small number of fine apartments (excellent place to stay, but you must book well in advance), and the Admiral’s House which has been turned into a museum centered around Nelson’s days on the island. But Antigua, sunnier and drier than most islands of the Caribbean, has more than Nelson’s Dockyard to attract holidayers to its shores and keep them active. For Canadians, northern Europeans, and visitors from the northern U.S., the most popular time of year is from just before Christmas until the end of March, a period the island hoteliers call the high season.Hotel rates are higher then, up to twice as high as those prevailing during the rest of the year, the so-called off-season which stretches from mid-April to mid-December.Winter visitors miss the abundance of flowers that are abloom in summer and the great variety of fruit that is available then. But if you want to escape from northern snow and cold temperatures, you have to give up something. The average daily high temperature in December through March is around 27.7 Celsuis (82 Fahrenheit) and the average mid-night low a pleasant 21 (70).The Trade Winds assure cooling breezes, making activities like golf, tennis, hiking and horseback riding very pleasant.Water sports of every kind abound, and because the island is blessed with far more than a fair share of fine beaches (365 of them, the Tourism Board says), there is no end to the opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FKIDAY.SEPTEMBER 9, 1988-7 Currey Vietnam novel a facet of complex puzzle Kaleidoscope Dw mr*LJ a on i By RICHARD LONEY Fatal Light by Richard Currey (DUTTON-LAWRENCE — FITZHENRY & WHITESIDE): $23.95, 195 pp.To date, most of the literature and films inspired by the Vietnam War have been either reportorial in nature (Michael Herr’s Dispatches) or based on pure narrative (Oliver Stone’s Platoon). Many of the books follow the basic pattern familiar to students of other war stories: a narrator, journalist, observer of some kind depicts the war’s impact on a small number of men, usually a platoon, following them into action and chronicling their reaction to the hell of battle. The Vietnam conflict had such a homogeneous impact on the men that suffered through it that their stories usually carry the familiar baggage of cliches, with the emphasis on the combat footage, when the story made it onto the page or screen.Richard Currey’s book is another telling of the Vietnam story, with the slight twist being that its author was a four year combat medic who concentrates not on pure narrative but on an almost poetic interpretation of the events he saw.Currey’s book is a spare, lean narrative told by a young American who is as revealing about his growing up in the United States as he is about the culture shock that jungle warfare represents for him.In addition to the stock fare such as the old woman being gunned down, or having her dog’s head shot off, the narrator who makes the fateful error of shooting an unarmed Vietnamese man who had been skulking in a darkened doorway of a hootch, or the seasoned combat veteran who goes berserk and begins killing indiscrimi-nantly, Currey’s book looks at the sentimental side of war.The narrator carries on a running series of letters and cards with his beloved grandfather and girlfriend Mary, indicating that he comes from a rural setting on the Ohio River, where West Virginia and the state of Ohio meet. His interchanges with his grandfather reveal a typically middle American background, something right out of an old Norman Rockwell painting of barber shops and rustic farm settings. It is the juxtaposition of this type of familiar American background with the horrors of combat that plunges the poetically rendered, but stunningly gruesome, scenes of carnage into stark contrast.Just after Currey describes the army’s induction process and the family background of his narrator, we come upon this scene from a chapter titled “In-Country”.An MP has just announced that the medic unit must check out a jeep that has detonated a land mine.“I climbed into the van: shoveled bodies like piles of old hose. One Vietnamese man, a prisoner, had lost his right arm and his pants.A sergeant looked like he was sleeping.A decapitated lieutenant’s head had rolled to the front of the van where it stuck, looking at me.‘Let’s move this inside’, I called out, my voice clouding in front of me, and I lea- ned for support and my hand went through the sergeant’s shirt into his gut that was still warm and the darkness of him froze around my hand, jerking awake from a nightmare, pushing my arm out, into the night, folding back a sleeve to reach blind into black, acidic water, his body talking between my fingers, sending one short gut moan for the bad light the explosion let in, and I lifted my hand out covered with his blood and shit.I looked at How’ard. It was raining into his coffee cup, coffee splashing to his thumb and wrist.‘ Man, ’ the MP said, ‘you shouda seen that jeep.’” Fatal Light takes us into the same territory as Stone’s “Platoon”, but with the difference that Currey’s eye for the poetic image and his ability to find beauty in the midst of inhuman slaughter never falters.Lying in hospital after being wounded, Currey’s narrator reflects on the jungle beauty he has seen: “The blush of frangipani blossoms and heliotrope wheels of inch-high asters.Green, depths of green, iridescent an diffuse, the skin of canopied light all around us.There are one thousand four hundred and thirty-six distinct shades of green in the typical rain forest, an instructor told us at Jungle Warfare School.White people can discern only twenty-eight of these shadings, he added after a moment.” Another element of Currey’s book is that he manages to take his soldier home where he experiences the strange dichotomy that America suffered during the Vietnam War.His grandfather provides him with solace and an easing back into civilian life amid a nation that neither welcomes him home as hero, nor appears to understand the tremendous hardship he and his mates have endured for flag and country.Richard Currey’s Fatal Light may not be the definitive book about the Vietnam War— if it ever could be written — but it is another facet of a complex composite puzzle that is slowly being put together by writers and film-makers.RECORD REVIEWS Little Feat Let It Roll (WARNER BROS.— WEA) Legendary band matched the hype and publicity generated about them, Little Feat faded from sight when George died in 1979, much lamented and symbolizing the end of the era.A decade later Little Feat is back on the scene with a dynamite album and some solid personnel additions.Joining the Feat are Craig Fuller, a guitarist/songwriter who toiled with a two-album outfit known as American Flyer which produced great music but slender sales and Freddy Tackett, whose name many album owners will recognize as being credited for guitar embellishments on a host of rock and country/rock albums over the past 15 years or more.Aboard from the original roster are Paul Barrere on guitars and vocals, Sam Clayton and Kenny Gradney providing percussion and bass, Bill Payne the original keyboardist, and Richie Hayward the wildman drummer of the Feat.If you can honestly listen to “Hate To Lose” and still be seated, well you just aren’t alive.Tackett lays down the slide guitar that George used to provide and Payne’s frantic piano pounding keeps this one jumping from the first bite of the needle on these tasty grooves.Fuller provides the lead vocals on “One Clear Moment”, sounding as good as he did with American Flyer, and “Cajun Girl” gives BiU Payne the spotlight for a piece of rollicking gumbo rock, New Orleans style.Impressive studio help on this welcome return by Little Feat came from Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Seger and Shaun Murphy, whose vocal additions make this a strong album from a vocal point of view.Hearing Little Feat pumping out great music again is a small pleasure ; to have the band sounding so first rate with the new line-up and performing fresh material with the old verve is just an unexpected bonus.Little Feat rides again! Kenny Loggins Back To Avalon (COLUMBIA) Even as Kenny Loggins perfects his movie soundtrack singing — “Footloose”, and now the theme to Caddyshack II, “Nobody’s Fool” — he may just be setting himself up to be called the white version of whatever it is that Prince has become in rock.Loggins, who was half of one of the most memorable duos in seventies rock as Loggins & Messina (“Your Mama Don’t Dance”, “The House At Pooh Corner”), can’t seem to figure out what brand of rock he wants to sing next.On “Tell Her” he does a tribute to Brian and The Boys de la Beach” which 3» turns out to be what the Beachies would have sounded like had they ever embraced disco. On various other tracks Loggins appears to favour some speeded up Hall and Oates vehicles, sprinkled with various guest artists.Part of the uneven nature of Log-gins’s latest album product must be laid at the feet of the array of producers that toil on the record.Their multitude means that the record has nothing of the even texture that album fans expect—Dennis Lambert, Peter Wolf, Richie Zi-to, Richard Page (of Mr.Mister), Patrick Leonard and Georgio Mo-roder alternately produce the ten tracks, making for an ever-shifting approach to the sound of this record that does not enhance it measurably.A duet with ex-Dobbie, supersuccessful solo artist Michael McDonald, titled “She’s Dangerous” could be culled from this set and thrust into prominence, but the balance of the tracks, with the exception of a Martin Briley song, are forgettable filler.VIDEO SCREENINGS Suspect (RCA/COLUMBIA VIDEO) In classic courtroom drama movies like Witness For The Prosecution (1957) with Charles Laughton as the defense attorney, or Anatomy Of A Murder (1959), with James Stewart for the defense, the emphasis was on the characterizations developed by the film. When much of the focus of a film is relegated to argumentative lawyers plying their trade in front of a judge and jury it is imperative that the lead roles be assigned to believable, convincing actors. In Suspect, a better than average court flick, the defense attorney is played by Cher.Throughout the film it is almost unavoidable for the viewer to not keep repeating, “this is Cher playing a defense attorney , and she’s not too bad ! ”, But even as you say that the whole concept breaks down.Suspect is about a deaf and dum war war veteran accused of murdering a young Washington secretary, who finds Cher the only human being to come to his rescue Cher’s character, Kathleen Riley, has a rough road to hoe as a feminist attorney in a male-dominated bastion of privilege, but she doggedly stays on to defend Carl Wayne Anderson, the mute played with haunting and brooding sullenness by Liam Neeson. One of the jurors on this grisly case turns out to be Randy Quaid, who had better choose his next few roles with care, before he becomes completely stereotyped as a grinning one-dimensional hunk.Quaid plays Eddie Sanger, Washington lobbyist without a single scruple, who strangely enough becomes convinced of accused suspect Anderson’s innocence.Quaid and Cher become romantically involved, in spite of the stringent pressures for attorneys and jurists to avoid any personal contact. The secretary’s murder leads to an involved Washington scandal, and Cher’s defence of the social pa riah uncovers some irregularities in the legal structure even as she wages a tough fight in the courtroom.Sigourney Weaver, Kathleen Turner or Debra Winger could have pulled off Cher’s role without a moment’s hesitation, but Cher as the defense attorney requires extraordinary acting ability (VIDEO AVAILABLE AT LE CLUB VIDEO, QUEEN STREET.LENNOXVILLE; AND AT TREI-ZIEME AVENUE, SHER BROOKE.) married. If so, what is her name—when and where was he born and how tall is he?Is there a Randy Travis fan club?If so how would l go about joining?—Patty Daniels, Florahome, Fla.A: No, handsome Randy has not married yet, however, there is a lady in his life.Hailing from the little town of Marsh-ville, N.C., 29- year-old Travis began singing and playing guitar at age 8.Talent shows, and years as both semi-pro and pro eventually led him to Nashville where he now makes his home. You may write his fan club for more information: Randy Travis International Fan Club, 1601 Alienbrook Drive, Charlotte, N.C., 28208.Q: Whatever happened to Gardner McKay, who played Adam Troy in the TV series Adventures in Paradise?I have never seen his face nor the series again.1 even fell in love with the schooner Tiki—and I can’t swim.' —Gail Kesler.Kingman, Aril.A: Handsome, square-jawed Gardner McKay was a minor supporting player before he sailed the South Seas as Capt.Adam Troy in Adventures in Paradise. The romantic free-lance skipper became so thoroughly stereotyped that when the series ended he could hardly find any work.He later became a moderately successful TV writer. As for the Tiki, it was probably scuttled with the series.Q: Is Art Carney offhe Honeymooners still alive? If he is.Is he married? Please tell me all about him.—Holly Oberhausen, Russellville, Ky.A: Art Carney was born in Mt.Vernon, N.Y.Nov.4, 1918.He began his career as a comedian with a danceband and developed his comic skills as a second banana to such funnymen as Fred Allen.Edgar Bergen and Bert Lahr.He won instant fame when he appeared as Ed Norton in The Honeymooners. He is still active in the profession he loves so well.Yes, he is married and when not filming in Hollywood, he and his family reside in Connecticut.Q: Please tell us who plays the part of Ray Luca and Pauly on Crime Story. The list of the other cast members would be nice too.—Elva Price.Big Spring.Tesas A: Crime Story starred Anthony Denison as Ray Luca; John Santucci as Pauli Taglia, Dennis Farina as Det.Lt.Mike Torello; Stephen Lang as Ally.David Abrams; Bill Smitrovich as Det.Danny Krychek; Steve Ryan as Det.Nate Grossman:
