Weather, page 2 Sherbrooke Wednesday, January 18,1989 40 cents NDP’s Langdon considering run against Broadbent?" Take it from me, let him speak and by tomorrow he'll be yesterday's news." OTTAWA (CP) — Steven Langdon is interested in running for the New Democratic Party leadership — and maybe even running against current leader Ed Broadbent.Langdon, MP for the southern Ontario riding of Essex-Windsor, said Tuesday he may consider running for the leadership if Broadbent steps down. But in a telephone interview he would not back up a CBC report he is considering running against Broadbent.Langdon didn’t deny it either but only said it was a CBC reporter’s conclusion.Meanwhile, Langdon and Derek Blackburn, MP for Brant, another Ontario riding, both said Tuesday the party must change direction.Blackburn told the Brampton Expositor the party needs new policies not a new leader."I’m convinced that it’s policy,” Blackburn said.“People just don’t trust us with the levers of power.” The party has faced criticism from within since it won 43 seats in the Nov.21 election.Although the election produced the party's largest caucus ever, members are disappointed with the third-place finish one year after the party topped national opinion polls.Broadbent said at a weekend policy meeting he will decide in early March whether he will step down NO COMMITMENT Langdon did not commit himself to running for the leadership.First, he said, he would have to examine a number of matters, such as whether he could assemble the campaign organization. He listed other NDP members as also being interested in the leadership and weighing similar options : MPs Lome Nystrom, Nelson Ms, Jim Fulton, David Barrett, party president Johanna den Hertog, Canadian Auto Workers union presi- To catch a smugg Fat angles want just deserts By Donald McKenzie MONTREAL (CP) - A group of women calling themselves ‘ ‘big fat damned English ladies” called on the Quebec Liberal caucus Tuesday to publicly apologize for remarks they say insult all women in the province.Industry Minister Pierre MacDonald was quoted last week as saying that one of his caucus colleagues complains frequently of ‘‘fat damned English” women sales clerks at the downtown Eaton department store.‘‘This is an outrageous insult to the women of Eaton and to all women of Quebec,” Greta Nemiroff, a college administrator, told reporters.“Apart from being a blatant untruth, this statement is sexist, racist and prejudicial. It is a harassment of front-line workers in the service sector.” MacDonald said Monday he regrets speaking “with such candor,” and that the remark is mild compared with others he has heard.Asked what will happen if there is no apology, the hefty Nemiroff laughed and said, “I will throw my lovely body to the ground and kick and scream.“You don’t tell people what your encore will be.” But Ruth Pelletier, a welfare and consumer advocate, said at the news conference the “fat damned English” tag is an indication that the Quebec government has “gone totally morally bankrupt.” Nemiroff said she also would like the four women members of Premier Robert Bourassa’s cabinet to stand up and be heard.“I think remaining silent would raise very many questions about whether they are able to represent the interests of women,” Nemiroff said after the news conference, which was attended by about 30 women professionals of various sizes.Customs officer Gabriel Duteau shows off the new, Canadian-made contraband detector, ' Can-X-Scan at the Stanhope Canada Customs office. He said the new, state-of-the-art detector may just RKCORD/GRANT SIMEON be the perfect way to catch big-time drug smuggling. To see what Duteau found inside the briefcase, turn to page 3.Senator Lowell Murray: Premiers haven’t closed doors on Meech Lake By Peter Lowrey QUEBEC (CP) — If Manitoba and New Brunswick have problems with the Meech Lake constitutional accord, let them discuss it with the other signatories at next month’s meeting of first ministers, Senator Lowell Murray, the federal minister for federal-provincial relations, said Tuesday.Murray said he felt the eight other provinces will be able to per- suade premiers Gary Filmon of Manitoba and Frank McKenna of New Brunswick they should ratify the accord before moving to the second round of constitutional reforms on such issues as Senate reform and minority rights.“I’m not under the impression that Manitoba and New Brunswick have closed the door on Meech Lake,” Murray told reporters.Prime Minister Brian Mulroney has suggested he and the premiers attend an informal dinner to discuss where Meech Lake is headed Gil Remillard, Quebec’s intergovernmental affairs minister, who met with M urray to discuss Senate reform, told reporters later there was no question of reopening the accord or of opening a second round of constitutional talks before Meech Lake is ratified Filmon and McKenna told repor- Ex-Tory Desrosiers to face fraud rap MONTREAL „ 1.29 FLORIDA PINK GRAPEFRUIT size ab 5 lor .95 PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND POTATOES 10 Al ( app ARLO & JAN1S® by Jimmy Johnson ?- NO' IS ME-BUT AH IS CARRNIN A .SHMOO -
