».adbois imeon oto: 2—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 1989 Down the Pike is Up Ashley Sheltus of ‘Down the Pike’ is up the creek. He wrote in the Record last week that he could not favor the Meech Lake Accord “while it does not recognize that it is the mil of English and French in Canada that makes us special.” That leaves poor Ashley on record as favoring the Accord because it does exactly that.It proposes to amend the 1867 Constitution Act (once known as the British North America Act) by adding: “(1) The Constitution of Canada shall be interpreted in a manner consistent with: (a) The recognition that the existence of French-speaking Canadians, centred in Quebec but also present elsewhere in Canada, and English-speaking Canadians, concentrated outside Quebec but also present in Quebec, constitutes a fundamental characteristic of Canada; and (b) The recognition that Quebec constitutes within Canada a distinct society.” Fair enough — the bicultural and bilingual character of the country is to become embedded in the constitution for the very first time — just as Ashley would like — but here’s the rub: “(2) The role of the Parliament of Canada and the provincial legislatures to preserve the fundamental characteristics of Canada referred to in paragraph (l)(a) is affirmed; (3) The role of the Legislature and Government of Quebec to preserve and promote the distinct identity of Quebec referred to in paragraph (l)(b) is affirmed." That appears to say that if a fundamental characteristic of Canadian society is the mix of English and French, and Quebec is “distinct”, then perhaps the mix is not a fundamental aspect of Quebec society.AND FURTHERMORE And what can we make of the role of the federal government to ‘preserve’ that mix while it is the role of Quebec to ‘preserve and promote’ its distinction? One seems to say the fundamental characteristic will be maintained while the other proposes to change it.And what of the difference between ‘centred’ and ‘concentrated’ in (l)(a)?Does that imply Quebec is the ‘homeland’ of French-Canadians as the Parti Québécois argues? And can the Parliament of Canada pass laws to preserve the presence of English-speaking Canadians within Quebec only to have Quebec override those laws to promote its ‘distinct society’?That was what happened with Bill 178 and the Meech Lake Accord seems to sanction the practice.BUT, HOWSOME-EVER Recognizing that Quebec is somehow different from the other provinces (even though Newfoundland has a ‘distinct society’, the Yukon and Alberta have a ‘distinct society', the Inuit and the Menno-nites and the Caughnawaga Iroquois all have ‘distinct societies’ within Canada), seems to have won for Bourassa what the 1980 Referendum lost for Levesque — a separation of this province from the rest of the country.Whether that separation is a ‘distinct society or ‘sovereignty-association’ is a matter of semantic nit-picking and grist for the legal mills. The separation of Quebec becomes part of the Constitution of Canada.BUT THERE’S LOTS MORE There is lots of other stuff in the Meech Lake Accord — stuff about immigration, the Supreme Court, federal-provincial conferences, amendments to the 1982 Constitution Act.Its flaws are generally re- The Creek keeping company Who’s who By TADEUSZ LETARTE cognized but most politicians plan to go ahead with it anyway as the best they can patch up at the moment hoping to fix it later. After all, that’s the way the country began in the first place and we haven’t done too badly.Deadline for approving that Accord is June 1990.Before that date, Quebec has to go to the polls.IN THE MEANTIME Bourassa says the election will not be called until the fall which makes Parizeau suspicious that it will be in the spring. You never know, you know.Sugaring season is upon us.The anglos are in disarray, victory for the Parti Québécois will be a mandate for total separation and a French-only Quebec and events might run us over before we’ve put away our galoshes. All of this causes friend Birdsong to come over strange and burst into poetry again — or at least nursery rhymes : “Little Bobby Boo-Boo Promised English signs — Til he got elected — Then he changed his mind.“Now little Bobby Boo-Boo Is going to the polls And all the English voters Will rake him through the coals.“He has to call a 'lection No matter how he feels — And Blacque Jacques Parizeau Is snapping at his heels.“He has to call a 'lection Before the winter snows And how it’s going to turn out Heaven only knows.” And as for that Third Party of genuine Quebec lovers, the Anglo-Franco Accord, “Better keep your eye on That Heather Keith Ryan.” @1® © The Hon.little Bobby Boo Boo riding to the polls.Cat Steven’s music banned at Sam the Record Man OTTAWA (CP) - An Ottawa record store has removed Cat Stevens albums from its shelves to protest the retired singer’s support for a call for the death of British author Salman Rushdie.Ian McLeish, owner of Sam the Record Man in suburban Merivale Mall, said he decided to stop selling records by Stevens, a folk singer whose popularity flourished in the 1960s and early 1970s.Stevens, now a Muslim, said at a meeting of Muslim students in London last week that he supports Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini’s call for the death of Rushdie, author of The Satanic Verses.Muslims around the world have condemned the book as blasphemous.McLeish said he could not sell Stevens’s music in good conscience after the singer voiced his support for the murder of an author in a Western country.Stevens has not recorded an album since the late 1970s when he converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusef Islam.MOBILE, Ala.(AP) — For the fifth year running, a Texan has walked down the runway as the winner of the Miss USA contest.“They called my name and I was shocked,” Gretchen Polhemus said after she won the pageant Tuesday night. The 23-year-old cattle broker and real estate agent from Fort Worth said she thought her runner-up, Jill Scheffert of Oklahoma City, was the winner Richard Guy, director of the Texas USA pageant, said the state’s fifth winning entry in the Miss USA Pageant just showed that “classy, elegant, today women" are victorious.Guy and his partner Rex Holt have coached the last five Texas contestants, as well as the 1977 Texas entry, to victory through their agency Guy rex Associates, Polhemus was crowned at the conclusion of an internationally televised two-hour production on CBS from the Mobile Civic Centre-Dick Clark and Angie Dickinson served as masters of ceremonies.Prizes and gifts amounting to $200,000 US goes with the title. The other finalists, besides Miss Oklahoma, were Miss New Jersey-Deborah Lee Husti Miss Louisiana Elizabeth Primm ; and Miss Geor-giaMichele Nemeth.LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aspiring actor Rob Camilletti has pleaded no contest to two counts of vandalism for smashing a photographer's camera equipment outside the home of his girlfriend Cher, a prosecutor said. His lawyer entered the plea Tuesday.Camilletti, a former New York bagel maker, pizza chef and bartender, faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 US fine when he is sentenced March 14.Camilletti's run-in with freelance photographers who were staking out Cher’s home occurred last July.He was accused of trying to run down photographer Peter Brandt in a Ferrari and damaging his camera equipment.A prosecutor said she will move to dismiss a reckless driving charge.Cher, 42, and Camilletti, 24, have been companions since meeting at a New York nightclub on her 40th birthday.NEW YORK (AP) — No more just the Material Girl, Madonna is the Collector. The singer-actress has joined Bill Cosby, Barbra Streisand and other celebrities on a list of the top 100 collectors in the United States, Art and Antiques magazine said Tuesday.Madonna, who earned $46 million in 1988, is a newcomer to the annual list — cited for her “top-notch collection of vintage photographs, particularly female nudes and boxers, and paintings by European masters.” ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.(AP) -Cast member Sinbad of the critically praised television situation comedy A Different World says the show's shortcomings are tempting him to leave.“Sometimes my role gets expanded but sometimes they don’t use me for two or three weeks,” said Sinbad.“I have to be all the way in or all the way out.I can’t straddle the fence. It’s hard for me emotionally because I want to give something to the show.” The comedian plays dormitory director and gym coach Waltei Oakes at fictional Hillman Collegf on the NBC show, a spin-off of Th< Cosby Show, This season the sit com has held the No.2 spot on th( A.C.Nielsen Co.ratings and sonn critics have called it television’ most improved show.LOS ANGELES (AP) — A loca record producer and a songwrite are deluging the United States’ ra dio stations with a pop-funk sing! calling for the release of soul sir ger James Brown from prison.Brown, 55, the self-proclaime Godfather of Soul, is serving a sis year sentence in a South Carolin prison on an array of charge stemming from a two-state chas Sept.24.THE KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CANADA We’re out to make kidney disease obsolete. TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FRIDAY.MARCH 3, 1989-3 Heroes’ Memorial Elementary presents Pinocchio By Sharon McCully COWANSVILLE - The script is only one of the necessary elements needed in a play. The Heroes’ heroes found that out when their teacher Daniel Lapointe and Tony Whittal brought them into the school gymnasium in January to begin work on the children’s favorite, Pinocchio."We began with a huge bolt of white cotton, cut into 18-foot lengths,” says grade five teacher Daniel Lapionte.“The students painted curtain designs for each of the twelve scenes.” The result; colorful backdrops featuring the whale's mouth, the whale’s gullet, a beach scene, a giant fair, the money tree, and the road to the village of Collodi.” The next step called for hammers, nails, saws and paint for the thirty elementary students involved in the play to construct the stage set.“We like the students to be involved with the total production,” Lapointe said. The two teachers share the task of staging the play with Lapointe concentrating on the theatrical aspect while Grade 7 teacher, Mr.Whittal, focuses on production and design.” When students finally reach the stage, it's hours of rehearsal before the curtain rises to a live audience. That moment will arrive March 10 and 11 when the Heroes Players of Heroes Memorial School in Cowansville present John Morley's Pinocchio to theatre-lovers in the region. The curtain rises at 7 pm both nights.Tickets are available at the door for $3.The Warhol art show a blockbuster By Peter Elsworth NEW YORK (Reuter) — The square silver balloons floating above a corridor wallpapered with yellow and blue cows’ heads are an instant introduction to the campy world of the late Andy Warhol’s pop art.Warhol, the cute bad boy who dominated the 1960s New York art scene and introduced the world to the artistic qualities of soup cans and other mundane objects, is having a blockbuster show at the Museum of Modem Art here.Apart from the corridors, the show fills two floors of the museum and features some 300 paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and films by Warhol, who died Feb.22,1987, following gall-bladder surgery in New York. The first floor appropriately displays a number of self-portraits by the man who evolved into a cult hero but who remained aloof and detached.“He was the most deadpan personality I’ve ever met — totally silent, poker-faced, passive, a total sphinx,” says art historian Robert Rosenblum, who wrote an essay in the show’s catalogue."Talking, if you can call it talking, to him was like talking to a brilliant mute,” Rosenblum said in an interview.“I don’t like to touch things, that’s why my work is so distant from myself.” MULTIPLES DOMINATE Typically, the portraits are dominated by multiple images of the same photograph, silkscreened onto canvas and painted in bold, flat colors. The most enigmatic series, a face with Warhol holding two fingers to his lips, dates from 1967.In the most dramatic image, which serves as an introduction to the show, his face is colored by a pink, red and white camouflage design.Warhol, who was bom Andrew Warhola in Forest City, Pa., to Czech immigrant parents on Aug.6, 1928, studied in Pittsburgh and moved to New York in 1949 to work as a commercial artist. He marked his 1961 entry into the world of fine art by using five of his paintings for a department store window display. Many of Warhol’s paintings from this early period are on display at the museum.Warhol’s best work is generally considered to have been done in the mid-1960s, when he worked out of a studio in New York known as The Factory, surrounded by a lively and colorful entourage of helpers and hangers on.There he produced repeated silkscreened images of such everyday objects as dollar bills, Coca-Cola bottles and boxes of Brillo pads. These efforts culminated in the familiar rows of Campbell’s soup cans and portraits of such Telethon proceeds dwindle to $7,504 EDMONTON (CP) — The ly violence.$330,000 pledged on a star-studded Entertainers, including singer telethon in December will net an Debby Boone who charged $25,350 estimated $7,504 in proceeds for a US and expenses to perform six Lions Club campaign against fami- eight-minute segments, contribu- Give.for life! When screenwriter Barry Morrow first met Kim, his original model for the central character in the movie Rain Man, Kim already knew Morrow’s past and present phone numbers and the number of freeway exits to his house. They met in Texas where Kim and his father, Fran, were attending a 1984 meeting of the American Association of Retarded Citizens.Kim, 37, is an extremely rare prodigious savant, capable of recalling virtually anything his senses have ever told him.But while Kim has a seemingly unlimited ability to absorb and recall facts and figures — including numbers in the telephone book — he has limited reasoning power and his IQ is a below-average 88.He always has lived with Fran in the Salt Lake City area, accompanying him on frequent business trips since a 1981 divorce from Kim’s mother “I am Rain Man," Kim said in an interview.“This is an important time for me.I have many talents now.” Morrow, who calls Kim “an island of genius,” believes the movie has changed Kim.“When I first met him, after he talked to me he dashed across the room and made low moaning sounds,” Morrow said.“Now, he would walk into a room and offer you his hand.” Kim’s father, who asked for the sake of privacy that his and Kim’s last name not be used, agrees that his son is changing. After a special screening of Rain Man for the Utah legislature, Kim stood up and stressed the importance of understanding the needs of the handicapped.HE’S LEARNING “I had no idea he could talk to those guys that way,” Fran said.“He is really learning to put his thoughts together.” After meeting father and son, Morrow decided he would pair a savant like Kim — trusting and sometimes childlike — with a greedy, self-centred and impatient brother.“Then I put them in a car and had them drive across the country together,” said Morrow, nominated for an Oscar for his screenplay. It chronicles the relationship between Raymond Babbit, an autistic savant played by Dustin Hoffman, and his brother, Charlie, played by Tom Cruise.“I don’t want to take away from the other people that helped Dustin create the character,” Morrow said from Claremont, Calif., “but Kim was the first inspiration for the story.” Coincidentally, Fran and Kim were rolling down the freeway when they heard the news last week that Rain Man had been no- Cdn talent By Bill Anderson TORONTO (CP) — Hoping to erase subtle forms of discrimination in the casting of films and TV shows, a leading Canadian talent union has worked out a deal that will see most independent producers keep a demographic score-card of the actors in their projects. The measure is designed to make casting directors “think differently” when they choose who will play a role, members of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists said Friday at a news conference.Instead of seeking a white man in his 60s to play a judge, for example, producers should consi- Mcervy Spring Bonus! the Massey Vanier teaching chef BY SHARON MCCULLY COWANSVILLE - Pierre Trudeau likes to snack on cheese - Russians athletes love blueberries with heavy cream - Prince Philip enjoys simple food, but if you plan to serve world-power brokers, Baron de Rothschild or Lord Carrington, bring out the white gloves and heavy silver.Chef Pierre Gadbois has been bringing a smile to the faces of some of the world’s most discriminating diners for the last thirty years.“At the World Summit at Chateau Montebello in 1981, Mr.Trudeau asked for a second bowl of my cream of asparagus soup”, Gadbois said proudly.“He’s a very witty fellow," Gadbois said of the former Prime Minister.“When one of the dignitaries asked the waiter what kind of cheese he was serving the waiter replied proudly, “They’re all Quebec cheeses.” Mr.Trudeau said, “You are wrong sir. These are Canadian cheeses made in Quebec.” BEGINNING AN ERA Pierre Gadbois began his first tour of kitchen duty at the Far-nham Military camp at age sixteen, emerging from the summer job with hopes for a career in cooking.“The sargent there told me I had a gift for food,” Gadbois recalled.“He gave me a break at a very important time in my life.” But after working weekends as a short-order cook for a local diner, Gadbois was sure he would never leave school to fry hamburgers. He enrolled at the Montreal Institute of Technology, and the formal training he received there propelled him into the kitchen of some of Canada’s finest hotels. After stints at resort hotels in Alberta and British Columbia, Pierre Gadbois returned to the Eastern Townships to operate the dinning room at Auberge de Sutton.THEN CAME TEACHING It was there he captured the attention of the new district of Bedford Director General.“The Director General was staying at the Auberge while his new house was under construction. So he asked me if 1 would like to teach cooking at the new Polyvalent about to open in Cowansville.” Gadbois moved to Massey Vanier High School the same day as the new furniture, and has remained there for the past 20 years.Next to cooking, Pierre loves to impart his knowledge to his students.“One of my students, Luc Montagne, is the executive chef at Chateau Montebello,” Gadbois says with the air of a proud father."It’s a wonderful thing when a student surpasses his mentor.” Gadbois also shares his personal success as a chef with his students.SPECIAL TREATS FOR VIPS In 1976 when Gadbois was placed in charge of feeding 300 equestrian athletes, VIPS, and grooms at the Bromont site of the Olympic equestrian events, half of the 185 kitchen staff were his students. It was there Gadbois met and had frequent conversation with Prince Philip and other members of the royal family.“Prince Philip was there all summer, along with Princess Anne and her husband who were competing in the equestrian event,” recalls Gadbois.“Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and the Queen came later for two days.” Gadbois derivied the most satisfaction cooking for the Russian athletes.“They always appreciated everything, unlike France’s athletes who were snobbish and demanding,” Gadbois said.“One day I gave the Russian team blueberries with heavy cream. It was the first time they had ever eaten blueberries, and afterward, they used sign language for more blueberries." When the contract for the 1981 World Summit was given to the Chateau Montebello, former student Luc Montagne enlisted the help of his former professor.“In one roon.we served President Ronald Reagan, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, French President Francois Mitterand, German Helman Schmidt, Japanese leader Suzuki, the Italian president, Prime Minsiter Trudeau, and the president of the European Community.” “Security was so tight we had to go through three sets of guards just to get into the kitchen,” he recalled. It was the first time Pierre Gad-bois ever made beaver tail consommé.“That was my most important assignmnet but not my best,” Gadbois says with a gleam in his eye.“The best was the Biideburg Convention where the guest list read like a who’s who of the rich and powerful.” “Among those seated at the table were Baron Rothschild, Lord Carrington, Henry Kissinger and others - just known as president of something.” “For every table of eight, there were eight waiters, each wearing white gloves,” Gadbois said describing the scene.“At the center of each table was a large, silver oval platter with eight individual servings. It was magnificent.” “Silverware for the occasion was borrowed from nearly every CP Hotel in the vicinity,” Gadbois said.FOOD FOR EVERYONE Whether cooking for prince or pauper, Gadbois devotes as much attention to pizza as pâté.“I love to cook and I love to see it done properly by my students.” When he began teaching the professional course to adults at Massey Vanier in 1969, he had a class of fifteen.Five years later, the group was so large, four teachers were g hired.^ “But my students are very dis- * couraged,” Gadbois says sadly.| “Their work as a cook in Quebec is ^ not recognized as a professional £ trade so they are forced to work for c the minimum wage.” « “Many students decide to do other, less arduous work even though there is a big demand for cooks," Gadbois says.“Unless the government gives cooks a trade status, this program will flounder and die as more young people opt for higher paying trades.” For the past two decades Gad- bois has kept the program alive by injecting money into the budget through bake sales, gourmet Christmas take-outs and a biweekly restaurant called Chez Pierre.“The largest budget I ever received was $12,000.Our costs run about $85,000 and I’ve never been in the red once in twenty years." Pierre Gadbois has served the rich and powerful, school kids and teachers ; he has sampled the food of some of the great masters of the art and he is adamant when he says: "the greatest cook in the world is my mother.” “She can do absolutely beautiful and magical things with leftovers.^ ^ Chef Gadbois has tickled the palates of the world’s tnost discriminating diners : « TOWNSHIPS WEEK^-FRIDAY, preoccupied and hot under the collar. That restlessness stayed with him through the entire seven weeks he was filming his role as Gen.Leslie R.Groves, the man who spearheaded the Manhattan Project and the making of the atomic bomb.Day One is the powerful account of the race to develop the bomb and the subsequent moral dilemma that its existence—both before the detonation and after—imposed on the world. The three-hour drama airs Sunday, March 5, on CBS.“Groves was not a comfortable man." Dennehy said, “and didn't make people around him comfortable. There was no obfuscation in his character. He was blunt and direct, always in a hurry."He gave the impression that he was just passing through a room or passing through a conversation. There’s always that quality about him—impatience, arrogance, a pushing quality. He was not an easy man to like in real life, I assume, but I’m attracted to him.He was driven, hard-working, ambitious. He was an extraordinary person who knew right away how to get things done.He built both the Pentagon and the atomic bomb.” Groves was assigned to head up the project when the government’s sluggish atomic research became urgent after the United States’ entry in World War II.The best scientists in the country were called in, but only in J.Robert Oppenheimer (David Strath-aim) did he find a man he trusted and liked enough to head up the scientific community.“Oppenheimer was an amazingly complicated man," Strathaim said.“My first reaction to him was of sadness because of what happened to him later when he was denied security clearance to work because the government thought he was a security risk.” “But the challenge here,” he contin- / t ''' ¦ BRIAN DENNEHY plays the military man who spearheaded the Manhattan Project in Day One, Sunday, March 5, on CBS.ued, “is not to consider him sympathetic from the point of view of history , but to try to illuminate his drive, his quick-witted and impulsive nature that got through a lot of red tape and philosophical quandries. Here was a man who knew he could make quite a mark for himself.I think he was egotistical and self-righteous.He had misgivings only after the bomb was dropped.” But there were others who were throroughly opposed to the dropping of the bomb. The military, scientific and political communities were absolutely split on the issue.Said Dennehy, “It was a conflict that existed between the people who wanted to use the bomb to end the war, which at that time was a reasonable objective, and those who said.‘This weapon creates more problems.’ ” Barnard Hughes, who plays Col.Henry L.Slimson.summed up the film.“Should we have dropped the bomb or not dropped it?That’s what Day One is all about,” he said."We’ll leave it up to the audience to decide.Everyone will take sides, and will probably have their minds changed two or three times before the movie is over.” < tv Liniing TOWNSHIPS WEEK-FKIDAY, MARCH 3.19H9-^5 Monday DAYTIME MOVIES 5:00 (PC) MOVIE: LES MODERNES 11988 Drame île Moeurs) Linda Fmentmo.Keith Carradme Un peintre s engage a forger 3 chets-a oeuvres.G 8:00 (FC) MOVIE: **V, FLAME OF THE BARBARY COAST (1945.Adventure) John Wayne.Ann Dvorak A gambling casino crumbles during the great San Francisco earthquake.NR 8:30 (PC) MOVIE: LE VENT DANS LES SAULES (1983, Animation) Aventures de Mole.Rat, Badger et Toad en Angleterre.G' 9:30 (FC) MOVIE: HOUR OF THE STAR (1986 Romance DramafSubtitled)) Mar ceha Cartaxi.Jose Dumont The bittersweet story of Macabea PGIS' 10:00(0 MOVIE: JOYEUSES PAQUES (1984.Comedie) Jean-Paul Belmondo.Mane La/oret Tribulations d un coureur de juponsimpenitent surpris par sa femme.(PC) MOVIE; browse, find examples of the tools and methods used by the first settlers, particualrly the natives of that area.Cases are filled with fishing tackle used to catch, either singly on hooks or later with the gill nets, the plentiful cod fish, their main source of food and revenue. One can, through the careful choice of articles on display, visualize fishing on the high seas, salting and drying the cod and preparing it for commercial uses. The evolution of the Gaspesian into provincial, national and international world markets is also explained, ending with a sobering peek into the future of the fishing industry as it stands today.A quick glance will explain not only the beauty of the area but the difficulties early settlers had in getting established and finding a means of providing a premiere May 1 LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla — The aura of Hollywood and the excitement of moviemaking combine at the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park, the only movie theme park in the world in which visitors truly go behind the scenes to see sound-stage shooting and other production as it is taking place.Motion-picture and television production at the Disney-MGM Studios began in June 1988.The 135-acre gated attraction, located south of Epcot Center, opens to the public May 1,1989 - hours after an April 30 NBC prime-time special gives America an early look at Walt Disney World’s newest addi- tion.Everyone who visits the new theme park will be immersed in the best of Hollywood’s magic.Entering the park’s gates, guests will find themselves embarking on a stroll up a “Golden Age” Hollywood Boulevard - where distinctive architecture, eccentric street cha-ractrs and one-of-a-kind restaurants and shops give the feeling of Hollywood in the ’30s and ’40s.A full-scale re-creation of the famous Chinese Theatre stands at the end of the street, its doors the entrance to “The Great Movie Ride,” a journey through scenes from some of the most popular films ever made.Sets and props that have been carefully remade to resemble the originals and more than 100 “Audio-Animatronics” figures give guests a “point-of-shooting” perspective on “Casablanca”, “The Wizard of Oz,” “Mary Poppins,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and other exciting film favorites.Television’s exciting history gets similar star treatment.Roles from famous television shows are up for grabs in the 1,000-seat Super-star Television theater, where volunteers from the audience and TV’s all-time superstars “appear” together in scenes from famous TV shows.Production skills which help make the magic become featured players in other attractions. The live show in the 2,000-seat stunt theater re-creates the death-defying heroics of classic adventure films through movie stunt demonstrations. In the Monster Sound Show, individual guests are brought on stage to test their skills as film sound-effects technicians -with predictably funny results the audience enjoys during the film’s playback.Ornate studio gates welcome guests to the Backstage Studio Tour, an unparalleled public look at the mechanics of moviemaking.A guided tram tour aboard the Studio Shuttle winds past the working wardrobe and crafts shops, through residential and urban bac-klot street locations and into Ca-tasrophe Canyon, a special-effects adventure with realistic simulation of rainstorms, flash floods, earthquakes and fiery explosions. The guided walking tour begins in a special-effects area in which fascinating demonstrations explain the mechanical and optical tricks that turn the seemingly impossible into on-screen “reality.” Next stop is the soundstages, where specially designed and soundproofed observation corridors give guests as unobstructed -and unobtrusive - bird’s-eye biew of ongoing production.Television’s “Win, Lose or Draw,” “Siskel & Ebert” and a Carol Burnett special for The Disney Channel have shot on the three soundstages, and the syndicated “Superboy” TV series has done interior shooting on Soundstage 1 and done post production at the Studio post facility.“The Mickey Mouse Club,” a new Disney Channel series, begins production on the soundstages in early 1989.In the post-production area, guests see and hear the final phases of production from film editing to audio dubbing.Disney’s animation department plays a starring role in the Backstage Studio Tour. For the first time, the public can see Disney artists at work on the many exacting aspects of the world-renowned Disney animation.Guests watch artists create classic Disney characters, develop illustrated storyboards to plan a film’s story and dialogue and produce the mountain of paintings and drawings needed for animation.A small gallery and theater help to explain the intricate process.Theme park dining choices include The Soundstage Restaurant, filled with sets and props from Touchstome Pictures’ “Big Business” and the Hollywood Brown Derby.Other choices include snacks and sandwiches from Min & Bill’s Dockside Diner, a steamer-styled diner, and ice cream at Di-nosuar Gertie’s Ice Creams of Extinction, a refreshment stand built into the side of a full-sized dinosaur.Hollywood-themed shops feature collectibles from famous motion pictures, movie scripts, props, costume pieces, antiques and animation cels from classic Disney films.Guests also can become recording and music-video stars and land roles in ’40s-style “Grade B” movies. From the creative forces of Disney and George Lucas will come “Star Tours,” a flight simulator-based attraction opening at the theme park in 1990.The classic characters of the “Star Wars” mythology will come to life in this ultimate thrill adventure, which made its debut at Disneyland in 1987.m m § A» -î»*r mm* ¦i - f Y'< It’s Lights, Camera, Action - at new Disney World LAKE action, tour bac-klots and sound stages and enjoy one-of-a-kind Disney shows and adventures based on the glamour of Holywood. The Studios' premiere signals a 1989 vcation season filled with grand openings throughout the 29,000-acre Walt Disney World Resort complex, including Typhoon Lagoon, Pleasure Island and Wonders of Life.Coming in June is a new ride-through adventure in the Magic Kingdom salt-water lagoon filled with tropical sea life. The 50-acre park is located between Epcot Center and the Walt Disney World Village, the site of a third exciting summer opening - Pleasure Island. The new Island includes six nightclubs plus restaurants and unique shops built to resemble a restored waterfront area with everything from disco and roller skating to comedy and adventure clubs adjacent to the Disney Village Marketplace.Later in the year, Wonders of Life, presented by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., will provide a major new complex of unusual attractions in Epcot Center’s Future World including an exciting highspeed ride using flight simulators and extraordinary motion picture re-creations to explore the won- ders found within the human body. And there are more resort opportunities than ever before for Vacation Kingdom guests with new lodgings at Disney’s Grand Floridian Beach Resort and Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, two themed hotels with a total of more than 3,000 rooms which have opened near the Magic Kingdom and Epcot Center during the past year. The Disney-MGM Studios combines a motion picture/TV production facility with a theme park in a 135-acre complex located a mile southwest of Epcot Center (as Dumbo flies).Production began in 1988 with “Splash, Too,” “Ernest Saves Christmas” and television segments of “Win, Lose or Draw," “Siskel & Ebert” and a Carol Burnett special.MTV’s “Remote Control” game show and the syndicated “Superboy" TV series also have used the three state-of-the-art sound stages.Studio visitors will see the making of the new “Mickey Mouse Club," a daily feature on the Disney Channel, plus Disney animations at work, creative-costuming department, the giant New York City baeklot, special-effects and post-produciton facilities. It’s showtime on the theme-park side of the Studios, where a Hollywood Boulevard of the '30s and '40s sets the stage for an array of adventure: The Great Movie Ride into the greatest moments in movie history; Superstar Television, in which guests participate in making a TV show; Monster Sound Show, a participatory sound-effects show; a stunt theater; and street theater around every art-deco corner. ice rink was transformed into a frigid movie set as Maurice (Rocket) Richard made his feature film debut in Edmonton.“I’ll be glad when it’s over,” the former hockey superstar said Wednesday as he prepared to brave a -30-degree night for the filming of Life After Hockey Richard, 67, plays an anonymous rink attendant who eventually reveals his true “Rocket” self at the end of the movie. The made-for-television movie is based on the smash hit play that premiered three years ago at Edmonton’s Fringe Festival. The first NHL player to score 50 goals, Richard remains fit and says he still gets a lot of fun out of hockey. He spends most of the winter as a referee for NHL oldti-mers games. The affable Richard said he still enjoys being recognized wherever he goes, even though his hockey career screenplay and stars in both, the chance to work with Richard is an unforgettable experience.“I had no idea we could coax him to come out here, but I’m thrilled he’s here,” Brown said.He was looking forward to the last scene in the movie, when he gets to skate and pass the puck around with Richard.Andy Thomson, the producer of the movie for Great North Productions, used to watch the Rocket perform his magic at the Montreal Forum while growing up.“I saw the Rocket at least two or three times a year,” Thomson recalled.T remember him well, very well.“This is worth making the movie, just having lunch with the Rocket.” TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY.MARCH 3.1989^7 Frank Clemons is back in new Cook murder novel Kaleidoscope By RICHARD LONEY Flesh and Blood by Thomas H.Cook (PUTNAM): $24.95, 302 pp Mystery writer Thomas H Cook performs a bit of geographical legerdemain in transporting his Atlanta, Georgia cop Frank Clemons to the seedy area of Hell’s Kitchen in the Big Bad Apple, N.Y.C.Clemons, when last seen in 1988’s praiseworthy novel Sacrificial Ground, was an Atlanta cop, who suffered the loss of his daughter Angelica, who was murdered by a psychopath. His marriage to his glamour-conscious wife Karen on the wane, the taciturn, enigmatic Clemons has set up shop as a private investigator in a dingy office near Eighth Avenue and 49th Street.Clemens, as brooding and sulky as Holmes ever was, can see his marriage disintegrating — wife Karen doats on the high life, the art gallery she has bought on Madison Avenue, and gravitates toward smoothie types like Jeffrey Lancaster.Clemens, on the other hand, habituates the Hell’s Kitchen area of the city, encountering fascinating characters like the hulking Fa-rouk, who he meets at an after-hours, atmospheric little bar on Tenth Avenue.Frank Clemons manages to drum up a case through his wife’s social contacts, and is soon working for Imalla Covallo, a purveyor of elegant clothing for the ultra chic set in New York.CLEMENS GETS A START Hired by the sleek Miss Covallo to investigate the murder of Hannah Karlsberg, Clemons soon finds himself dredging through the behind-the-scenes squalor of the garment trade which is such a vital part of New York’s economic and social fabric.Hannah Karlsberg was found in her swank apartment bludgeoned and slashed to death by numerous knife wounds, with the blood spattered all over the walls.Even more horrible than the brutal fact of her savage killing, Karlsberg had one of her hands severed from her body and the police search of the crime scene revealed that the hand was missing.Robbery had not been a motive, as the jewels and money in the apartment were still intact.Frank Clemons, with Farouk as his silent, menacing side-kick, begins to investigate the climb up the corporate ladder of Hannah Karlsberg, finding a trail of union activity, labour activism and an immigrant scenario so typical of many garment trade workers. He finds that Hannah Kovatnik was the murdered woman’s real name, and that she and her two sisters lived in a tenement flat with their rabbi father in conditions of appalling poverty.Hannah's fervent idealism and devoted work on behalf of the garment workers union is at odds with her later role as an executive in the upper spheres of the fashion trade. There are many other odd findings that Clemons and Farouk stumble upon, as Thomas H.Cook weaves this study of character and morality with unobtrusive deftness.Flesh and Blood develops as a mystery novel in a quiet, surehanded manner, with Cook delving into the psychology of his characters while he is spiriting his readers around the darker comers of New York City.Clemons is such an emotionally taut character that the reader is continually surprised at his reactions to events. This is truly a novel in which the reader is as perplexed about the next action of the protagonist as he is about the usually baffling actions of the criminal elements.Frank Clemons as a detective is that rare bird in mystery fiction who tells us as much about the human condition through his own attempts to deal with life, as he does in his crime-solving.RECORD REVIEWS Elvis Costello Spike (WARNER BROS.—WEA) It is doubtful that the same contingent of rock’s faithful that find Tiffany and Michael Jackson’s music satisfying will ever find anything from Britain’s Elvis Costello either accessible or edifying.Particularly Elvis’s latest album, the long-awaited Spike, which to Costello’s oeuvre is undoubtedly his Sgt.Pepper.The trend toward instant gratification and throwaway lyrics in today’s pop — “Don’t worry, be happy” — will unfortunately tend to discourage the rock multitudes from poring over Elvis’s convoluted, poetic lyrics, text in hand as Elvis strings out his layers of Dylanes-que ambiguity.Costello certainly has Dylan’s dexterity with words — their sound, their flow and their ability to build complex structures without having a solid underpinning of sense or meaning.A case in point is Elvis’s perplexing tune “God’s Comic", one typical verse of which runs as follows: “So there he was on a water-bed / Drinking a cola of a mystery brand / Reading an airport novelette, listening to Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Requiem’ / He said, before it had really begun, T prefer the one about my son’ / ‘I’ve been wading through all this unbelievable junk and wondering if I should have given the world to the monkeys’”.Able assistance from some rock dignitaries such as Paul McCartney, who plays Rickenbacker and Hofner basses on a couple of compositions.Roger McGuinn on a Rickie 12-string, Jim Keltner and Jerry Marotta on drums, and Chrissie Hynde laying down a harmony vocal on “Satellite”, adds a sophisticated edge to Costello’s magnum opus. The album is magnum in another sense as well, with seven tunes per side, many having running lengths of three and four minutes. From love ballads like the tender “Baby Plays Around”, sung against an acoustic guitar backing, to the bitterly satirical diatribe that appears to be directed squarely at Marga ret Thatcher, this is quintessential Costello. The latter track, “Tramp The Dirt Down” goes for the jugular: “I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign I A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain / She spills with compassion, as that young child’s face in her hands she grips / Can you imagine all that greed and avarice coming down on that child's lips”.Not an easy album to "get into” by any stretch of the imagination, Elvis's Spike is one that demands full attention and liner notes in hand while he spins out his poetic, compelling word pictures that have to be peeled back like onion skins to get to the true meaning.Hearing Elvis’s latest and knowing that Paul McCartney has been working with him conjures up visions of Paulie bouncing song ideas off of an alter-ego who has the same delight in the sounds of words and their subtleties of meaning as had his earlier partner from Liverpool.VIDEO SCREENINGS Midnight Run (MCA VIDEO) An unlikely pairing of performers lends the aura of complete success to what could have been just another “buddy” movie with a twist in Midnight Run The oddma-kers wouldn’t have given you much of a chance in the casting of Robert DeNiro and Charles Grondin as a bailbondsman’s posse and a mild-mannered accountant as his reward-fetching baggage, respectively.DeNiro, an ex-cop from Chicago, takes on an impossible mission when he contracts to have Grodin returned to Los Angeles from his New York hideaway.Grodin, it seems, has pulled off a humanitarian type of crime, by embezzling 15 million dollars from his gang-boss in Chicago, funneling the money off to needy charities in a Robin Hood-like scam. When DeNi-ro’s character, Jack Walsh, attempts to get Jonathan Mardukas (Grodin) back to the sleezy bondsman (Joe Pantoliano), there are a few irksome details he must deal with First, the F B I.is eagerly pursuing “the Duke”.led by a bum bling agent who has some great sight gags as part of his comic arsenal — DeNiro chides him about his sunglasses, and the agent keeps swiping the cigarettes from the other freelancer who is also after DeNiro’s bond-dodger.John Ashton plays a bargain rate bounty hunter whose methods are far more brutal than DeNiro s, but all three of the principals chasing "the Duke” are rivalled by the Chicago mobster's pair of dopey hit-men who attempt to rub out their prey on various modes of transportation Midnight Run, directed by Mar tin Brest, becomes a road show, a character study of the foul-mouthed DeNiro and his taciturn, philosophizing captive, and in its last half hour an action-flick with zooming helicopters, daring gun battles, and bumbled chase se quences With a running time of over two hours, the best recommendation for this fun movie would be to say that it zips along much faster than any one hour television action show' you’d care to name.DeNiro’s comic turn just re affirms the notion that he is one of the leading figures in American cinema; Grodin is restrained in his role and keeps the wise-cracking to a minimum in this likeable portrait of “the Duke”.(VIDEO AVAILABLE AT LE CLUB VIDEO, QUEEN STREET, LENNOXVIL-LE; AND AT TREIZIEME AVE NUE, SHERBROOKE.) yÉ—TOWNSHIPS WEEK—FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 1989 T uesday DAYTIME MOVIES 5:00 (PC) MOVIE: DELIRE SUR
