there’s humour and character development from week to week. The characters have changed and grown from the first year to this, their sixth season. Will Bones and Booth ever get together?I think that they will when the show has a series finale.Meanwhile the writers will do everything that they can to stretch out that romantic tension for as long as they can to keep Bones going into as many seasons as they can manage.WIKIMEDIA Emily Deschanel Upcoming Highlights: Saturday Night Live Back-stage.A behind-the-scenes tour of the show's history includes previously unseen interviews and memorable sketches, Sunday night, 9 p.m., NBC.Happy Watching.Love these days Outside the Box Kelly McDevitt f-|~|he following column was intended I for last Friday, before the holiday in JL question.Alas, a few doctor’s appointments and family obligations Diabetes Québec Information and donations: (514) 259.3422 or 1.800.361.3504 www.diabete.qc.ca The New caused me some confusion and prevented me from submitting it on time. With my sincerest apologies, dear readers, I present you with your intended Valentine’s Day gift: Pink.I really, really hate pink.Anyone who knows me can guess why.You see the colour pink and you think of things that are fluffy and sweet, like cotton candy, bubblegum, flamingos.I’m neither fluffy nor sweet, and I have a hard time dealing with things that are. That, more than anything, is what 1 hate about Saint Valentine's Day.Every window in every store is bedecked with god-awful pink till someone breaks out the St.Patty’s gear.Forget all the sociopolitical nonsense - blah blah consumerism, blah blah pagan origins, blah blah.Singles Awareness Day (S.A.D.-geddit?Really, it exists). What peeves me isn’t being single or having half-price chocolates shoved in my face (those two things work quite well together, actually) but the damnable, omnipresent pink.Gah! Dear Internet, this year for Valentine’s Day I would like an array of perspectives on modern love, preferably showcasing as little pink as possible.Love, Kelly.Vamlmmtimes Dayl - The good people over at Homestar Runner really are comical geniuses.Their quirky little cartoon characters can seem silly at first, but amid all that silliness is some pretty hilarious writing. The Vamlumtimes Day cartoon from the website’s Teen Girl Squad series is no exception. If you aren’t familiar with the website (and you should be possums, I wrote about it many moons ago), this is a good introduction to their style and humour.Visit www.homestarrunner.com/tgsl2.html and get some tech-no-logical ro-mance.Cat Food & Bean Dip - Probably the most unromantic title for a Valentine’s-themed story ever, but it’s a cute little film.Jason, a downtrodden, single grocery clerk, ponders the holiday of love while selling flowers, wine and chocolates all day for couples everywhere to enjoy. It’s not the most positive perspective on V day, but I think it ends on a heart-warming note.To watch visit www.youtube.com/user/thedusty.Do Not Disconnect - Ever walk down the street or get onto a bus and notice that everyone around you is plugged into their own personal bubble?Eyes fixed blankly ahead and ears firmly corked with a white wire or a blue tooth, many of us make our way through the streets utterly disconnected from those in our surroundings. This wonderful little short film explores simple human connection - one could call it love, or compassion, or even awareness.Check it out at www.youtube.com/DoNotDisconnectFil m.In a bit of irony, the film’s concept was recently adapted (read stolen) for a Motorola Super Bowl ad.Eyeroll.Awkward Embraces - Dating can be tough, mostly because it’s a really embarrassing exercise. The forced manners and chivalry, the tricky balance between eating/drinking, talking and smiling simultaneously, the strange ritual of synthesizing all your defining quirks, habits and interests into one hour of exhibitionism - none of this is fun. This web series finds out those awkward moments and gets them right on, each episode as painful, embarrassing, and giggle-inducing as a hit to the funny bone.Follow the nerdy Jessica as she stumbles through what seem to be all my personal nightmare dating scenarios (seriously, the date in the Mexican restaurant.uncanny) at www.awlcwardembraces.com. TALK t newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com February 18 - February 24, 201 1 Page 3 Ladies of the Canyon A band perhaps on the edge of their big break Jesse Feith f I jhis Saturday, February 19 Montreal quartet Ladies of the Canyon will be .1.making their way through Sherbrooke to play at popular microbrewery/bar Boquébière.Billed as “four friends who got together to write songs,” it doesn’t take long to notice that the band is much, much more than that.Although truly friends first, composed of Jasmine Bleile, Maia Davies, Anna Ruddick and Senja Sargent, LOTC represent a unique situation in which all four members not only share the songwriting load, but also take turns on vocals throughout their range of songs.Still touring off the strength of their last release, their debut album Haunted Woman, the band will be finishing off their week in Sherbrooke after playing shows both Thursday in Toronto and Friday night at Montreal’s Highlights Festival. The album itself is a mix of sounds difficult to pin a genre on, as producer Collin Crips explored the band’s different possible arrangements and songwriting styles from all four members, eventually creating an album that could as easily be called country as it could rock as it could pop.Early singles “Follow Me Down.” “Maybe Baby” and “Give it Again” are arguably the most upbeat on the entire album, and when asked why they were chosen as singles, vocals/guitarist Senja Sargent agrees.“Those three songs just seemed like the most attractive, straightforward and catchy on the album.” You can’t let the catchiness and poppy country vibe of the singles fool you however as the rest of the album leans more Willie’s Throwdown Tour set for Champlain Valley Country Connection Jessie Aulis jr-|-jhe Willie Nelson’s Country Throw- 1 down Tour will stop in Essex Junc-.X.tion, Vermont, on the fairgrounds, on Sunday, May 29.This will be memorable because it has so much to offer. The event will feature a lengthy list of outstanding artists on three different stages. It will be set up in a festival style, and you can take your lawn chairs, blankets, there’s no assigned seating. The gates will open at 3 p.m.and the shows will continue throughout the day until 11 p.m.The second annual edition of the Throwdown Tour is the only tour of its kind in the world of country music.Willie Nelson’s Country Throwdown Tour mixes top country music artists with emerging singer-songwriters and all that at an affordable ticket price. The festival event offers a great atmosphere where fans enjoy a constant stream of music on multiple stages all day long.It will feature a diverse lineup that brings together iconic and emerging artists in the country music scene as well as a full gathering of lifestyle attractions.Jamey Johnson, Randy Houser, Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, Craig Campbell and Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real will be joining Willie Nelson on stage. This nationwide country music tour is kicking off in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 27 and runs through July 4, where the tour will end with a big Fourth of July bang.In addition to the seven main artists performing on two stages (a main stage and one side stage), the Bluebird Café Stage will feature six extraordinary singer-songwriters.Fans will get to see these artists perform intimate ‘in the round’ sets on the Bluebird Café stage throughout the day, as well as nightly performances on a specially designed stage during the main stage set changes. The Bluebird Cafe performers will include: Brent Cobb, Dani Flowers, Austin Lucas, Adam Hood, Erin Enderlin and Caitlin Smith. With a career that has been lasting for 60 years and 200-plus albums, headliner Willie Nelson has earned every possible award as a musician and received accolades as an author, actor and activist. This past April, Willie Nelson’s Country Music, produced by Grammy- and Cont’d on page 5 towards old-fashioned 70s rock and roll ballads.Fittingly, as the band not only claims their main influences are The Eagles, The Band and Fleetwood Mac, but they also take their name from Joni Mitchell’s third album.Songs such as “Lonely Town” and title track “Haunted Woman” show the bands ability to slow it down and write stretched out ballads that rely on not much more than simple acoustics and chilling vocals to get their message across. When asked to choose a personal favourite off the album, Sargent singles out one of the songs on the album she wrote herself; “Poet.” Inspired by Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel # 2" and a past relationship, the song lyrically evokes thoughts of holding on to a fleeting relationship and musically offers one of the most intimate moments on the album. The band is currently on the Quebec leg of their tour.Excluding their gig at The Dakota Tavern in Toronto, their next shows will bring them across our province stopping at places such as St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, St-Therese, Rimouski and finally Sorel on March 24.“We always enjoy playing shows in Quebec, it just seems like there is a much more loyal fan base here, and a unique crowd that comes out to our shows,” adds Sargent.Letting the simple country image that surrounds this girl band define them simply isn’t enough as LOTC pack more than a little punch once on stage.Known to give away ex-boyfriends’ numbers on stage while encouraging the crowd to call them and for the occasional slip of the tongue vulgarity, the four “ladies” of the canyon have been known to cause a raucous onstage that may catch certain casual country fans off-guard.Seemingly layered in more rock than they are in pop, at times LOTC would seem to be more at ease living in the freewheeling 60s and 70s than in today’s era in which every album needs to have a genre embedded on it, and every band a scene to fall in to.Although all songs on the album may have a similar sound, they all simultaneously explore different corners of the country genre and when harmonized together live on stage the end result is something not to be missed. The smaller stage on hand at Boquébière seems hardly enough to contain the four personalities of the band. With their broad stage presence and array of attitudes, LOTC are sure to deliver a well worthwhile show this Saturday night that most likely won’t leave anyone on hand disappointed. All things seem to be looking up when it comes to Ladies of the Canyon, currently already working on new songs to follow up the understated success of Haunted Woman, about six songs completed they say.Saturday night may very well represent one of those rare chances when you get to witness a great band playing smaller gigs right before their big break.Catch Ladies of the Canyon this Saturday Februaiy 19, 9p.m.at Boquébière.Tickets available at the door for $12.THÉÂTRE CENTENNIAL THEATRE DISCOVER CENTENNIAL THEATRE See: Saturday, February 19th, 8pm; Last summer we initiated the first annual RCM Radio Drama Writing awards competition and today are pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 contest. The distinguished panel of judges for the competition - Alex Paterson, Frances Gallagher and Jefferson Lewis - have completed their review of the entries. They met recently to select the winners and reached a unanimous decision that the prizes should be awarded as follows: First Prize - $500 - Colin McGregor for “A Student Summer Abroad;” Second Prize - $350 - Roger de la Mare for “Enjoy the Dance;” Joint Third Prize - $150 -Pauline Clift for “Alice in Winterland;" and Joint Third Prize - $150 - Denise Crawford for “A Death by the Pike.” It's hard to explain the joy one gets out of developing and producing an event whereby people are honoured and supported for their creative works.RCM’s Radio Drama Writing awards is the brainchild of David Grenville; COMICS With the library welcoming older teens and adults last week to a special graphic novel event in conjunction with the Community Art Lab, Good Reads played in the comics section, located in a back corner.Joss Whedon created the critically acclaimed TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a musical, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.Although Whedon’s lawless-cowboys-of-the-future TV show.Firefly, did not survive for long, he did manage a movie, released after the show’s cancellation. The graphic novel Serenity: COON F1HETT MATTHEWS VVIIL CONRAO LSERENJ^TY Those Left Behind (2006) is a prequel to the film.Starship captain/actor Nathan Pillion tips his hat to Canadian readers in the introduction.Craig Thompson’s graphic novel Blankets (2006) doesn’t offer much comfort at first: “As a child, I thought that life was the most horrible anyone could ever live in.” He’s also haunted by his youthful inability to protect his younger brother. As a teen, Craig is an artist who considers the ministry, although his talents are not valued. One teacher laughs at him for his vision of Heaven, where he imagines an eternity spent with paper and pencils: “I mean come on, Craig, how can you praise God with drawings?” Perhaps a different career would be best.Eventually, he falls in love, with Raina, who makes him a quilt. This is a beautifully illustrated coming of age story, and a reminder that first love does not last.Skim is written by Torontonian Mariko Tamaki, and drawn by Jillian Tamaki (a New Yorker).“Skim” is a young goth at an urban private school, collecting up stuff for her wiccan altar. She gets dragged into counselling when a boy she doesn’t even know dies — apparently, goths are prone to depression. The cynical Skim rolls her eyes (“my school=goldfish tank of stupid”).She also tries to cast a love spell. There’s lots of Manga Shakespeare, and for younger readers, there’s Jeff Smith’s multiple-volume Bone series.Oldsters will smile at the homage to older TV toons and Dr.Seuss.Everyone else will just love it, period.Good guy Fone Bone is helping out two rather ethically iffy cousins who’ve been run out of Boneville. But the three end up lost in a strange land beyond the desert, stalked by a hooded figure carrying a scythe and protected by a dragon. It’s a lot of fun.You can also find some graphic novels filed in the Young Adult section.BOOK ENDS Preschool Story Time, for ages 0 to 5, is every second Tuesday. The next Story Time is March 8, starting at 10:30 a.m.The Children’s Saturday Activity for March 3 has been rescheduled for March 12 at 1:30 p.m.to 3:30 p.m.BOOK ENDS FOR ADULTS Books and Brown Bags: Come have your lunch and discuss a book you’ve read and enjoyed.Every second Wednesday, from noon until 1 p.m.— please come by on March 9 for the next Books and Brown Bags. For information on all Lennoxville Library events, call us at 819-562-4949 or visit us at our website www.bibliolennoxvillelibrary.ca or email: bibliolen@gmail.com.¦osm WCAX Q .News The Early Show Rachael Ray Dr.Phil The Price Is Right WPTZ O .Newschannei 5 Today at 6AM Today Live With Regis and Kelly Today Today CBMT Q 206 301 CBC News Now Artzooka Anima| [ Bo on the Go! | Busytown Super Why!
