Admission: $8/day p., $12 weekend pass pp, $40 family weekend pass, children 12 & under free.$6/night for camping RECORD -( ¦ ¦ Page 2 May 20 - May 26, 201 1 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com TALK A taste of New Orleans - Treme Going Viral Ellen Goldfinch At the risk of being repetitious.I’ll rail against HBO again.Trying to follow a series on HBO is a frustrating experience.I never know when it’s on, because it’s either on almost every night (which means that HBO is replaying the same episode several times) or it’s not on at all.So imagine my TV columnist joy when I found out that Treme is on Sunday nights at 10:00.Now I can program the machine to record it.Treme is a series that is in its second season and has gathered itself a following of loyal fans.By the way, Treme (pronounced tre-may) is a neighbourhood of New Orleans that is close to Bourbon Street and is the home of many musicians.The show’s first season starts off just after Hurricane Katrina decimated the homes and lives of the people of New Orleans and with the lead-up to its first post-Katrina Mardi Gras.David Simon and Eric Overmyer, who created The Wire, brought onboard writers who are familiar with the New Orleans scene including Tom Piazza who wrote Why New Orleans Matters, as well as a journalist from New Orleans’ Times-Picayune, and one of the writers for the documentary.Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Musicians in Black New Orleans.I believe that this crew of writers has done a wonderful job in giving the series a gritty realism.Since food is a major part of New Orleans culture, we get to watch restaurateurs trying to keep their businesses alive and entrepreneurs who use the influx of federal money to make their fortunes.There is La Donna (Khandi Williams) who is a bar owner looking for her brother who disappeared during the hurricane.She is helped by Toni, (Melissa Leo), a civil rights lawyer.Toni has problems of her own.Her husband, Creighton (played by the always wonderful John Goodman) is a failed novelist who is on the verge of mental collapse and her teenaged daughter, Sophia (India Ennenga) is doing what all teenagers do - drive their parents crazy.Yet it’s the music of New Orleans that separates this series from all others.Real musicians are used, such as Annie the street violinist (played by real life musician, Lucia Micarelli).Her trials and tribulations as a professional make for interesting watching and her problems are complicated by her relationship with DJ.Davis McAlary (Steve Zahn) who provides a lot of comic relief to the show as a the kind of guy that everything happens to.Another music plot focuses on Antoine Batiste (Wendell Pierce), a trombonist who is desperately trying to get in with a band again.The show brings us into the music of the streets and clubs of New Orleans and we get to hear everything from Dixie Land to a sort of club music called Bounce.Treme is one of those shows, like The Sopranos, that brings you into a world and culture that you would never be exposed to otherwise.The musical scenes are well filmed and don’t have the choreographed preciousness of Glee, but then again, this show is targeted towards an adult audience.If you enjoy good music and good drama, give Treme a try.Upcoming highlights: Next up on Treme - Annie starts composing, Davis discovers a new talent and Sophia gets an internship.Sunday night, 10:00, HBO.Happy watching! Ellen Goldfinch may be reached at radiomother@yahoo.ca.Outside the Box Kelly McDevitt I try not to strictly review or recommend web series with this column, partly because I doubt how many of you actually watch web television, and partly because I tend never to listen to reviewers when it comes to the things I watch.And I hate to be hypocritical.So every once in a while 1 try to preview a series I’ve heard about, let you know what to expect, usually with the intention of going back to it later for a review.And then I forget all about it because I have the memory of a turnip.Last February, I wrote about an upcoming web series based on Mortal Kom-lat, the iconic fighting videogame.The web series grew from a short film.Mortal Kombat Rebirth.Released last year and starring Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager, Boston Public) and Michael Jai White (Spawn, Dark Knight), Rebirth was designed by director and choreographer Kevin Tancharoen as a pitch for a feature-length R-rated Mortal Kombat movie.That idea didn’t fly, bilt the short was so popular online that it was picked up and retooled as an original series called Mortal Kombat Legacy.Things I meant to do Well the series is now six episodes into its first season (turnip memory), and there is some serious money and talent behind it.Produced by Warner Brothers, the show was able to retain White as Jackson Briggs and Ryan as Sonya Blade in the leading roles.It also picked up Canadian Tamoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse) as Kur-tis Stryker.If you’re going to make a show based on a hand-to-hand combat game, you should do it with people who know how to fight.What I find most impressive about the cast of this series is the slew of talented stunt actors and martial artists - five-time martial arts world champion Matt Mullins, stuntman Darreb Shahlavi (300, Chronicles of Riddick, Night at the Museum) to name a few - playing characters in their own right rather than filling in for celebrities.I guess this is what happens when you get a choreographer behind the camera.The series is incredibly gory, but well filmed and stays true to the characters it’s based on.The fight scenes are clever and well choreographed.Fans of the video game, martial arts and action films alike will be impressed.Mortal Kombat Legacy is being hosted on YouTube by the gaming website Ma-chinima.com, a web site focused on producing content for gamers.The word machinima, a combination of “machine” and “cinema,” generally refers to film projects shot using gameplay footage, the best of which is the Halo machinima series Red vs.Blue.Machinima.com produces an incredible number of machinima series for various purposes.Some are stories filmed for entertainment, much in the same line as Red vs.Blue; others are informa- tive and historical series geared towards hardcore gamers - for example an entire series dedicated to exploring the maps of Halo 3.(The website’s “About Us” section claims to provide “comprehensive gaming-focused editorial and community programming to the hard-to-reach core 18- to 34-year-old male demographic." Good thing too, because nobody’s making content for 18- to-34-year-old males these days.Snort.) Adam Budd It’s possible that in choosing “Priest” over “Thor” last weekend, I made a mistake.It is also possible that given the choice between two comic book adaptations again, I may just stay home (unless it happens to be Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated new “Batman.” - every rule has exceptions).Based on a South Korean graphic novel, “Priest” centers on a secret cadre of religious warriors.The priests protect the human race in an ongoing war with vampires, who are more like blind mad dogs rather than the archetypical Dracula we’ve come to know.The film begins with a violent animated exposition which explains how the priests defeated the rival race of vampires and attained complete control of humanity.From there, we follow a young priest (Paul Bettany), now cast aside after the victory, as he rebels against the religious rulers who are trying to cover-up the fact that the blood- sucking beasts have somehow reemerged.He suspects the vampires have murdered his brother’s family so he leaves the church to fight the “vampire menace.” 1 have a slight bias against comic book genre films and “Priest” is no exception.It takes a rich premise of heresy, loyalty and blood and turns it into a rather run-of-the-mill adaptation.The heresy is a given: we know our protagonist, predictably named Priest, will go against the church in order to avenge his brother’s death.His loyalty to his family acts only as a thinly veiled excuse for the spectacle of violence.As a result the blood flows easily and with no sense of justice.A loud yawn a few rows behind me solidified the feeling in the cinema -“Priest” is flat and generic, and even un- bearably boring.However there is one saving grace, as the visuals are incredible.The city that the priests protect is straight out of “Blade Runner” with jaw-dropping detail and scale.The choking dark atmosphere of the fascist religious state is contrasted with the sun bleached wide-open plains of the desert.The setting is evocative and the visual world of “Priest” is intriguing in its anachronisms.One thing’s for sure: it's not “Batman,” which has set the standard for comic book adaptations .For take-your-breath-away action, leather cat suits and villains that are truly evil, we’ll have to wait until 2012.Rating: 2 deadly heretical priests out of 5.Sherbrooke singer Vincent Vallières’ latest release goes Gold Coming to Cowansville this summer Jesse Feith It has been well documented that in today’s music industry, album sales are at an all-time low as artists struggle to sell their music to the masses that can easily access it for free from illegal downloads online.Record sales have been plummeting since the early 2000s and music certifications such as Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond are being handed out less and less frequently as they are based on total units sold or shipped by an artist.In Canada, an album is certified Gold once it ships 40,000 copies, Platinum as of 80,000 and Diamond after shipping 800,000.As of last week, Sherbrooke’s own singer-song-writer Vincent Vallières’ latest album, “Le Monde Tourne Fort,” has officially sold 40,000 copies, making it certified Gold in Canada.Born in Sherbrooke back in 1978, Vallières learned to play guitar as a young teenager and quickly began singing songs from his idols such as Robert Charlesbois and Paul Piché before starting to write his own music and lyrics around the age of 15, at which point he won second place at the Cégeps en Spectacle event in 1996, backed by his band Trente Arpents.Vallières put the money to good use as he and his band recorded a demo CD titled “Le Vent Du Nord,” which would lead them to signing a record deal with producer Bernard Y.Caza the following year.The band would finally release their self-titled debut in 1999, yet despite mostly positive reviews and even two minor radio hits, the band found themselves unable to pierce into the always stubborn Montreal music scene, a must for Quebec artist trying to make it.The band stuck together throughout the difficult times, yet after extensive touring through Quebec and trips out East, Vallières was evolving as an artist, finding himself going in a different direction than his band mates, turning towards more rock-style songs and shedding the nice boy image that his then record label had him marketed as.The next couple of years would be Vallières’ evolving period and would see the release of three albums:” Bordel Ambiant” (2001), “Chacun Dans Son Espace” (2003) and "Le Repere Tranquille”-(2006).By 2009, Vallières had settled into his role as a Quebec artist and was growing more and more comfortable with his musical style as he began the recording process for “Le Monde Tourne Fort,” his latest and most successful release.Layered in personal lyrics and simple, to the point music, the Sherbrooke native’s talent comes through on each and every track.Ac- Scott Woods Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods and his band are making a stop in Richmond as part of their cross country tour to deliver a live performance of an all-new 2011 show called “All Aboard!” This two-hour live variety show brings to life the old-time music of years gone by and can be enjoyed by those from 2 years old to 102 years old.There are plenty of popular old-time tunes, traditional country favourites, wholesome family humour, trick fiddling and even some great Canadian step dancing.Scott Woods and his band perform with zeal and appeal that leaves audiences wanting more.Scott Woods hails from Fergus, Ontario and is a Canadian Open and Grand is ‘All Aboard’ Masters fiddle champion.For seven years, he was the musical director and played the part of Don Messer in “Memories of Don Messer’s Jubilee.” Performing a limited number of concerts across the country each year, all of which are benefit concerts, Scott Woods has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities, churches and community All Welcome Free Will Donations Page 4 May 20 - May 26, 201 1 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com TALK How to (ribbit) draw the perfect frog (ribbit) Good Reads ¦ Eleanor Brown Kids know that drawing is more about capturing movement and feeling than it is about getting the nose right.But there comes a time for some when a perfect nose begins to matter.Or at least, when the proper shape of a frog begins to matter.The Magic Pear, by Morgan J.Sweeney, was first published in 1887, and uses the shape of a pear to create the likeness of a frog, a rabbit, a cat, and other critters.“My little dears," it begins, “this pear is a Magic Pear.It has an elephant in it.” This how-to reprint appeared in 1977, with 12 different possible drawings made out of a fruit, and ends with drawing a man.(With a reader’s imagination, a woman’s not far behind.) From there, try 1-2-3 Draw People: A Step By Step Guide, by Freddie Levin (2007).Its tips begin with more shapes — squares, rectangles, ovals — all of them useful when drawing a kid playing soccer or dancing ballet.A body or a face is made up of many smaller parts, all of them coming together to create the whole.The author explains proportion and how to plan a picture so that it’s perfect.This is much harder than when using just pears, and will take more time to get right.But it’s a lot of fun to work it all out and draw you, your family or your friends.Freddie Levin uses the same ideas in another book, 1-2-3 Draw Mythical Creatures (2003).“This book is designed to help the young artist break down com- r- ; •: j 12-3 Draw Mythical Creatures A step-by-step sMdo Freddie «J1 • ' ' "J •• Amman KmoYe plicated images into simple shapes and see the relationship between the shapes.To encourage young children with little confidence or children with poorly developed motor control, cut circles, eggs and ovals out of tag board.Have the child move these basic shapes into position on drawing paper and trace around the shapes, to get the first step of each drawing.” Plus there’s the sphinx, pixies, trolls and dragons.Harry Potter fans will love the three-headed dog and the hippogriff, all borrowed from ancient mythology.Once kids have the basics down, they can try out other projects.How about creating a flipbook?Flipbook Animation And Other Ways To Make Cartoons Move, by Patrick Jenkins (1991) shows the way.Old-style cartoons were made by hand, with dozens of pictures filmed one after another to create one minute’s worth of moving picture.It takes time and planning to do, but you can create a flipbook using the same idea.Does that seem too hard?It’s not.Jenkins shows how to make a fish swim.Draw little fish lips at the far left of a piece of paper.Then draw a little more of the fish on each sheet, and presto! Soon you can collect all the pictures, flip them, and watch a fish zooming about.Jenkins gives great instructions and makes the complex easy.He shows how to connect the paper, how to organize each drawing, and even how to make the fish do a loop-the-loop.There are all kinds of steadily harder projects here, from a fly buzzing about your nose to a rocketship landing.And because Jenkins is a movie lover, so there’s also cool info on how films used to be put together, and even how to create old movie devices with stiff paper, pencils and light bulbs.It’s a lot of ftm.So far, these books have been stuck on pencils (and erasers!).The Children’s Book of Painting, by Lothar Kampmann (1972) features two children who play with paint and crayons and will give your children lots of ideas on an otherwise wet afternoon.Splotches can become trees and fireworks, thanks to blowing at paint with a straw.Or remember painting one side of a paper and folding it over?Or how about stencils?Remember to put old newspapers down.painting is fun, and kids should be encouraged to be a little messy (Good Reads repeats: a little!).Older kids can use these same techniques to create ever more sophisticated artworks.Some kids want to create cartoon strips and comics.These next books are for them! Begin with How to Draw Cartoons and Caricatures, written by Judy Tatchell (1987).“Cartoons look quick and easy to draw,” begins this manual.“You may have found that they are not as easy as they look, though.This book is full of simple ways to do good cartoons.” There’s a quick review of some of the techniques discussed in previous books in this column, as well as ideas on how to exaggerate eyes or mouth to create a true caricature.Plus templates for happy, sad, mad and funny expressions.And don’t forget that your comic strip will need narrative, maybe a joke, perhaps scenery and sound effects! This book will help you plan it all out, in addition to helping with drawing technique.Finally, Scott McCloud has written and drawn Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art (1994).It’s an inventive 215-.page work of philosophy, psychology and* art history for serious students of what the French call le neuvième art, and what the great Will Eisner, creator of the masked adventurer who starred in the famed Sprit series of the 1940s, called sequential art.The history of comics can be traced in the Americas to pre-Columbian times, with ancient picture manuscripts.Over in Europe, the Bayeux Tapestry, which tells of the 1066 Norman Conquest, is a comic — a group of sequential images telling a story.There are even sections on conveying sound in print, and on how realism and colour impacts the brain.Understanding Comics is for those who take the form seriously and want to read up on art theory, and more — in pictures and words.All these books can be found in nonfiction with a green dot, and are numbered from 709 to 743 (the books are filed by number under the decimal system founded by librarian and educator Melvil Dewey in 1876; he divided books up into subjects so they’d be easy to find, but if you’re having trouble, just ask).Book Ends for Children The theme for the TD Children’s Reading Program this year is Splash!
