AUGUST 25 - 26 - 27 - 28 75 cents + taxes PM#0040007682 Tuesday, August 23, 201 1 Townshippers react to Layton’s passing By Evan LePage The death of NDP leader Jack Layton had a dear and profound impact on individuals across Canada yesterday, and the Eastern Townships was no exception.Local political figures expressed their sorrow at the loss of a truly dedicated and passionate politician.“I was definitely saddened to hear the news this morning,” said Sherbrooke’s NDP Member of Parliament Pierre-Luc Dusseault.“But I was also surprised, like all Canadians.I wasn’t expecting this, it was really a shock.” Dusseault said that Layton kept his condition private within the party as well, and that he found out the news via both email and television around the same time as the general public this morning. The sadness expressed by Dusseault could also be heard clearly in the voice of Compton-Stanstead MP Jean Rousseau who said he was “completely devastated,” upon hearing of Layton’s passing.“Mr.Layton is the reason why I joined the NDP in 2004 and why I began to actively participate in the campaign,” he said.Rousseau told the story of meeting Mr.Layton after he won his riding in last spring’s elections.“Mr.Layton had his cane and I had my leg in a cast because I broke it during the election period. He thought it was absolutely comical” Rousseau said.“He hugged me and said welcome to the family.I will always remember this; he was so proud of me.” Local citizens of the Sherbrooke area also participated in the flood of social media posts commenting on Layton’s CONT’D ON PAGE 5 c’.’/'-v u.m THE CANADIAN PRESS/ADRIAN WYLD.P Leader JacKFLayton dies of cancer Tells New Democrats to carry on NDP leader Jack Layton puts away his notes after speaking to reporters following a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa, Tuesday August 25,2009.Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton died Monday, just months after leading his party to unprecedented success in the federal election campaign. He was 61.The Canadian Press Ottawa J-ack Layton’s untimely death from cancer has left a gaping hole in Canada’s political landscape. But he ntinues to try, from beyond the grave, to ensure that his cherished NDP will thrive without his familiar, cheerful, mustachoied presence at the helm.In a letter to Canadians penned just hours before his death from cancer early Monday, Layton professed optimism that the NDP can build on its historic success in last May’s election and actually grab the brass ring next time.“We've done remarkable things together in the past eight years,” Layton wrote, addressing New Democrats.“There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader.Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work .“Let’s continue to move forward.Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.” To Canadians in general, Layton promised that his 102 MPs many of CONT’D ON PAGE 5 Lennoxville robber uses garbage bags Page 3 Page 2 Tuesday, August 23, 2011 newsroom@sherbrookerecord.com The Record The Record e-edition There for you 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week Wherever you are Access the full edition of The Sherbrooke Record as well as special editions and archives.Add an online subscription to your print subscription for less than $2 a month, or purchase the online edition only for $55.Record e-subscription ra tes 1 year print $120 plus tax 1 year print and web $140 plus tax 6 month print $ 63 plus tax 6 month print & web $ 75 plus tax 3 month print $ 32 plus tax 3 month print & web $40 plus tax 12 month web only $55 plus tax 1 month web only $4.99 plus tax Web subscribers have access to the daily Record as well as archives and special editions.Subscribing is as easy as 1,2,3 when you go to www.awsom.ca Qick Subscribe.Choose newspaper.Complete form and wait for an email activating your online subscription.Weather TODAY: A MIX OF SUN AND CLOUD HIGH OF 19 LOW OF 11 WEDNESDAY: CLOUDY HIGH OF 25 LOW OF 10 J.) Some nifty program had “strong-armed” my password, a password that actually was a conglomeration of letters and not a real word and then went into my contact list on Hotmail, and sent out an advertisement with a link to everybody that I know. Some people got an email with a link to some sort of TV-related web site and my friend in England got an email from me with an ad for Viagra with prices in British pounds! Ah, what an evil and wise program that spam-bot is.My reaction was instantaneous anger at having my privacy breached and my friends bothered. In addition, I was really worried that they were going to be spam-botted as well.So far ten days later, that hasn’t happened, but I did some research by Googling the terms email hacked and spam bot.I also consulted some techno-sawy friends and got advice as well. One friend told me that many of her own friends have been hacked into on Hotmail, but a friend of Spam-botted mine with a Gmail account just re ported that she’d been hacked and that we should ignore her emails, so apparently no one email service is safer than others.but I can’t swear to that.Luckily for me, I use different email addresses for different purposes and my Hotmail account is not one that I use for regular correspondence. Many of the email addresses in the contacts were defunct, but my determined spam-bot hacker targeted friends who’ve kept the same address for several years. One of the first things that I did was to move my iTunes account away from Hotmail to another account.I did this by going into my iTunes settings and changing my user name.I did the same thing with my Linkedln account.in fact, I’m a little suspicious of Linkedln, and indeed, I am also suspicious that there were times that I logged into my Hotmail from a hotel where there is less protection.I may change my password more frequently if 1 must do that.My next step was to change my email password and a friend offered the suggestion of using a longer password that includes upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers. You have to create your own mnemonic or memory aid in order to remember the thing and that’s not easy with an aging brain.Doing this makes it harder for someone to crack your password. Finally, I deleted all the email addresses in my contact list. The idea is that if the spam- bot gets into the contaminated list, there are no addresses to harass.I was not sure about this because I figured that the damage had been done, but I think it worked, as my other email addresses have received no spam from my Hotmail account.I’m curious to add one of my email addresses to see if it will happen now.If I was using a PC, I would have run a virus check but since I’m now a Mac user, a friend suggested that my computer was probably all right and I needn’t worry that something was living in the hard drive causing evil.I also emailed abuse@hotmail.com, which is the address that Microsoft gives for Hotmail problems.I still haven’t heard back from them and it’s my assumption that they receive emails like this all the time, so much for their good intentions.Another thing that I could have done is simply shut down the account, and I’m tempted to do just that.At the moment, that account is just used for signing on to a service that doesn’t require any payment. The maddening thing was the amount of time that I spent trying to learn how to resolve the problem and resolving it on my own.It put me in a bad temper and came at a time when my elderly father had taken a turn for the worse.Email was essential to me to keep in touch with some of the professionals who were working with him. There are worse things that can happen in life but I’d just like five minutes with the human being who set that evil spam-bot on me.just five minutes.Grrr.Ellen Goldfinch may still be reached at radiomother@yahoo.ca Saint-Vincent residents get own 'oasis By Evan LePage TJie Saint-Vincent long-term care facility got a little greener on Monday with the unveiling of their brand new “Garden Oasis.” The green space, complete with wheelchair accessible gazebos, benches, gardens and a fountain, will offer residents of the facility, many of whom are restricted in their movements, the opportunity and freedom to enjoy the outdoors in a beautiful and accommodating area.“All of us need to immerse ourselves in nature sometimes, to breath freslv air” said Stéphane Thibault, worker in charge of the facility’s beneficiaries.“Our residents are no exception to that rule, they need that as well.” Previously residents of the centre had only the parking lot as an outdoor space. The garden is an initiative of the health and social services centre of the Geriatric Institute of Sherbrooke (CSSS-IUGS).The Saint-Vincent garden was the fourth and final garden project undertaken by the Institute at long-term care facilities in the region, which cater to a total of 755 residents.“For residents in the center, who for the better part of their life probably had access to a garden or to a park, the (lack of access to these spaces) is significant when they arrive,” said Diane Gingras, chairman of the board of directors of the CSSS-IUGS.“So we try as much as possible to present the living conditions that they previously enjoyed, to make them feel like they were still at home.” Speaking at the Monday unveiling, an elderly resident of the Saint-Vincent cen- tre, Ms.Daigle, told those in attendance how thankful she and all the other residents were to have such a beautiful space at their disposal.“What I really love is the fountain, which reminds me of good times past,” she said, adding that she hoped for a long, warm fall. The “Garden Oasis” cost $400,000 to create, a quarter of which came from a donation from les caisses Desjardins de Sherbrooke. The rest of the money was provided by the CSSS-IUGS and the Vitae Foundation, a charitable organization with the goal of improving the services and living conditions at the CSSS-IUGS facilities. The Saint-Vincent long-term care facility is home to 205 regular residents.Visit www.sherbrookerecord.com to see a photo of the garden. Declarer ducked the first trick (to supply another communication line to his hand via a club ruff), won the next trick with dummy’s club ace, cashed the spade ace, and played a heart to his ace. What did he do next?If the spades were 5-1, South had no chance.Alternatively, if they were 3-3, West 4 K 5 V 10 8 7 2 ?Q 6 4 3 ?K Q 10 North 08-23-u 4 A V Q J 4 3 ?A K 8 5 4 A 8 6 3 East 4 Q 9 7 2 ¥ 9 6 likely, declarer now led a low spade, bringing down West’s king.West returned a heart, but South won in his hand and played the spade jack to drive out East’s queen.A moment later declarer got back into his hand, drew the missing trump, and claimed.CROSSWORD Across 1 Close-up lens 6Jazzjobs 10 Con game 14 The American dream, e.g.15 Colosseo city 16 “_, Can You Hear Me?”: song from “Yentl” 17 relationship, but I had blinders on.Dear Annie: My husband (probably soon-to-be ex) and I read your column with our morning coffee. We’ve been married 43 years and have two married children and five beautiful grandchildren.I felt very blessed, loved and cherished.“Bill” retired two years ago.Obviously, I wasn’t paying enough attention to notice the red flags.I trusted my husband completely, but he developed a relationship with one of his co-workers.I’d met her at the company Christmas party, but failed to notice how much she and Bill seemed to enjoy being together.I’m sure he had no clue that all his other co-work-ers were gossiping about him and this gal. They tried to warn me about the relationship, but I had blinders on.I couldn’t believe my Bill would be interested in another woman.1 found a card from her saying she’d be “seeing him soon” and signed “with love.” He had hidden it in his desk. When I confronted him, he said he planned to see her about once a month, just to keep in touch. He made it clear that I was not included in these meetings. When I realized what a fool I’d been to trust him all this time, I decided to file for divorce. In spite of that.Bill refuses to stop seeing this woman. My daughter says I’m doing the right thing, but my son fears I’m rushing into something both of us will regret.I want to warn other couples to pay attention to those red flags.Don’t blithely disregard what others are saying. Those same co-workers now tell me that they stopped warning me because I refused to listen. This experience destroyed my world.Annie, if you have any advice for me.I’m listening now.— A Formerly Trusting Wife Dear Trusting: Spouses often ignore warning signs because they can’t fathom being betrayed by someone they trust, and facing their worst fear is too painful to bear.Your son doesn’t want you to have any regrets. Please ask your husband to come with you for counseling before making your decision permanent. If he refuses, go without him, and make sure your choice is the right one.Dear Annie: Several times a year, our relatives get together for family dinners. When my husband’s married cousin arrives, he pulls me into his body, wraps his arms around me and blows kisses in my ear. When we are in the same room, he sometimes walks up behind me and hugs me tightly. My husband says to ignore him because he is simply being a jerk.I spend the entire time trying to avoid him.I Annie’s Mailbox have asked him to stop, to no avail.Am I wrong for feeling this uncomfortable?— Creep Factor Dear Creep Factor Hardly. This cousin is a world-class stinker who will keep groping you until there are consequences for him.The next time he does it, shriek loudly in surprise, and then tell his wife that her husband can’t seem to keep his hands off of you. That ought to take care of it, since your husband won’t.Dear Annie: “Inger from N.H.” expressed a pet peeve about the way change is returned to the shopper in retail establishments.Instead of sympathizing, you simply said that the column was available for letting off steam. My father was a former A&P manager.before the era of supermarkets, when clerks still waited on customers.I learned how to say “yes, ma’am” and “no, sir.” And we had one of those cash registers that didn’t tell you how much change to give, so I had to learn how to make change and count it out in the customer’s hand. When you have experienced this kind of treatment, you never forget that we once lived in a civilized society.I, for one, fully empathize with “Inger” and lament the loss of a kinder past. Please let her know there are still some of us left.— Thomasville, Pa.Annie's Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.!#?II'; Svï- ' v V You can now
